ナツメ Jujube trees

 月末恒例のナツメ成長記録です。今日も雨でしたが、ほんの一時止んだので急いで写真を撮りました。手前から、品種不明の新入り、無核金絲、蟠棗、早脆王、皇帝（下半分しか写っていない）。

This is the month end recording of jujube trees' progress.  It rained today again, but I managed to take photos when it stopped raining for about 10 minutes.  Starting with the nearest tree in the photo, the unknown cultivar that I bought on 23rd May, Seedless Gold Thread, Early Crisp King, Emperor (only the bottom half in the picture).

5月23日に渋谷園芸で購入した品種不明の新入り。以前の小さすぎる鉢から鉢増しされて肥料ももらえているので、全体的にとても元気そうになりました。葉色が薄かったのも、だんだんと濃い緑色になってきました。

The unknown cultivar, that I bought on 23rd May:  After replanting the tree in a much larger pot, and with fertiliser, the plant is looking increasingly robust.  The colour of the leaves used to be paler, but now it is turning into darker green.

この苗の葉っぱに特徴があり、葉の両側が波打っています。また、葉の先端もかなり鋭く尖っている。

The shape of this tree's leaves is unique in that the edges are wavy.  Also, the tip of the leaf is very pointed.

買ったときに既に出ていた蕾がぽちぽち開き始めています。

The plant already had flower buds when I bought it and a few of them are now flowering.

昨日気づいたのはこれ↓。緑色の枝の後ろにあるコブがほころび始めて、そのうち芽吹きそうです。

I noticed this change yesterday - the node behind the green branch is starting to move.  I think it will be budding soon.

こちらは無核金絲棗。４月末からほとんど変化が見られず一時は枯れるのかと思ったくらいでしたが、ここ10日間ほどで急に成長を再開しました。枝ぶりは蟠棗に追いついて、葉っぱの拡大はこちらの方が上なので、蟠棗よりも充実した外観です。

Seedless Gold Thread Jujube:  It hardly grew since the end of April, and I was worried that the plant might die.  However, in the last 10 days, it started to change rapidly.  The growth of branches has almost caught up with Panzao.  With this tree, the leaves are actually getting larger, unlike Pnazao.  As a result, this tree looks fuller than Panzao.

蟠棗は、なかなか葉っぱの拡大がみられません。そのため無核よりも貧相に見えますが、新梢が出ているので育つ意欲はあるようです。
Panzao: The leaves remain so tiny, and this plant looks almost unhealthy.  However, new branches are growing, so it wants to live.

蟠棗が梨棗の枝替わりというなら、もっと大きな葉っぱになるはず。

If this cultivar is a bud mutation of Li jujube, then the leaves should be much larger.

早脆王。勢いよく伸びた２本の枝が主幹にぴったり沿って垂直になったままだったので、支柱で引き離しました。これで、将来枝が分岐して増えても風通しが確保されます。

Early Crisp King: The two branches that shot up in spring remained almost stuck to the tree trunk.  I pulled them apart and tied to props, in order to make it airy when these branches become fuller in the future.

皇帝。順調に育っています。３本の枝のうち２本は目標の高さになりました。あとの１本も追いついてきたら、全部同じ高さで揃える予定。去年の状態と比べて大きく成長しました。

Emperor:  This tree is doing well.  Of the 3 branches, two of them have reached their target.  When the last one grows, all 3 of them will be kept at the same height.

最近 次々と花が咲いていますが、この涼しい時期にはムダ花になるだけです。７-８月の本格的な暑さの中で開花したものが着果につながります。

There have been a lot of flowers opening recently, but in this cool weather, none of them will set.  For fruit setting, we need the high temperature of July-August.

一日中、雨 Raining all day

 今日は梅雨寒のような一日でした。早朝から雨合羽を来て、タイガと私はのらりくらり。

Today was quite chilly as if cold days of the plum rain period have started.  Wearing raincoats in the early morning, Taiga and I walked through the neighbourhood at a snail's pace.

とにかくタイガが もよおしてくれるのを待つばかり。

Just waiting for Taiga to do her business, then we can go home.

いつもは散歩からの帰り道はゆっくり歩くタイガも、今朝は抵抗なく速足で帰宅しました。

Normally, she walks deliberately slowly when we head home after a walk in the park.  This morning, she was very cooperative.

この雨でリンゴが元気です。５月初めの高温乾燥が続いた時期はハダニが少し発生していたけど、最近の頻繁な雨でおとなしくなりました。写真↓は、右がグラニースミス、左が紅の夢。玄関からでも果実がはっきり見えるまでに育っています。

One benefit of the rain is that it gives vigour to the apple trees.  During the hot and dry spell that we had earlier this month, I saw some spider mites on the back of the apple leaves.  Thanks to the frequent rain we have been having, those mites are not visible for now.  In the photo below, on the right is Granny Smith, and on the left, the red-fleshed variety called Kurnai-no-Yume.

紅の夢は幼果のうちから果皮が色づくので、果実を見つけやすい。

With the red colour on the young fruits, Kurenai-no-Yume fruits are easy to spot.

木の天辺のアーチ型になっていたのをバチッと切って、今の主幹は直立性です。仕立ては当分の間スピンドル型を継続していく予定です。

The top of the Kurenai-no-Yume used to form an arch.  I have pruned it and now the tree trunk is straight.  Fow now, I am going to continue with the 'spindle' method that I saw on the Youtube.

夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 夕方散歩に出ようと準備していたら、タイガの気になる人が前を通るのを察知したらしく、その方角を凝視していました。

As I was getting ready to go out for our evening walk, Taiga was fixated on a passerby who was coming up the street.

日頃からタイガに声をかけてくださる人のようで、嬉しそうに尻尾を振って待ち構えていました。タイガには私よりも多くの知り合いがありそうです。

It was one of Taiga's fans who always pay kind attention to her as they pass our house.  Taiga was waiting, wagging her tail.  It seems Taiga knows a lot more people than I do (I am basically a loner).

城北公園に向かって歩いていると、向こうから近所のリアちゃんがやって来ました。散歩からの帰りのようです。久しぶりに会うので、お互い大興奮。

As we were heading for the park, we saw Leah coming towards us.  She was returning home after a walk.  Since we had not seen each other for some time, Leah and Taiga were very excited.

リアちゃんはジャーマンピンシャーで、毛色がブラック・アンド・タンなのでドーベルマンピンシャーを小さくしたような外観です。タイガとじゃれながらも、私の手提げの中身を気にしてツンツンしてきます。あまりにも可愛い仕草なので、私が折れようとしていたら、

Leah is a German Pinscher, and with her black and tan coat, she looks like a miniature Doberman Pinscher.  Although she was playing with Taiga, her mind was on the treat in my bag at the same time.  She kept poking at my bag with her nose.  She looked so cute that I was about to give in, when

向こうから仲良しのジョン君がやって来ました。

John, another friend, was spotted coming in our direction.

リアちゃんはまたしても大興奮で挨拶。ジョン君が斜めに倒れそうです。

Leah got excited again and greeted John with enthusiasm - John was nearly knocked down.

タイガが入り込む隙もなし。

その後、公園に着いてドッグランの方角を目指して草地を歩いていたら、初めてみる子に会いました。ウルフドッグのドン君、１歳３か月だそうです。最近、ドッグランで何頭かウルフドッグを見かけるようになりました。ミステリアスな狼に憧れる私には嬉しいことです。

 Afterwards, we were crossing the field near the dog park, when we met a new face.  He is a wolfdog, named Don, at one year and 3 months old.  Recently, we started seeing a few wolfdogs in the dog park.  Since I like the mysterious wild wolf, I welcome their appearances.

ドン君はとても落ち着いているしフレンドリーなのですが、マズルをしているのは世間一般に安心してもらうためなのかも。

Don is very gentle and friendly.  Nevertheless, the owners put a muzzle on him probably to reassure people in general about their safety.

シェパードなどの大型犬が苦手なタイガですが、ドン君が優しい子なので挨拶に近寄られても逃げ出すことはしませんでした。

Taiga is not keen on large dogs like German Shepherds, but with Don being so gentle, she did not try to run away when Don approached her.

でも、ドン君に対してちょっとそっけない態度だったかも。その代わり私がたっぷり挨拶しました。

However, I must admit that her attitude was not enthusiastic.  Instead, I got a lot of contact with him and enjoyed it.

今日は比較的涼しい日で草が冷たくて気持ち良いのか、腹ばいになって小休止。また会えるといいなぁ。

It was a chilly day and the grass was cool.  So, Don started lying flat on his belly to relax.  I hope we will meet again.

こだわりバジルの品種 Novel basil cultivars

 園芸資材を買いに近所のJAへ行ったら、入荷したてのバジル苗が棚いっぱいに並んでいました。今年もバジルを買う季節になったのか、と思って近づいたら、何とも強烈な匂い。マスクをした状態でも棚から香ってきました。「エバーリーフ」のバジル苗です。

When I went to the nearby JA to get some gardening materials, I saw the shelf with newly arrived basil plants.  Looking at the large shelf and thinking that the basil season has arrived again this year, I smelt a strong scent from them.  I could smell it even with a mask on my face.  They were 'Everleaf' basil plants.

セールス文句は、「花が咲きにくいので　たくさん収穫できる」そうです。エバーリーフのシリーズとして他にもうひとつ品種が並んでいましたが、私はこの２種類だけで満足です。

特にこのジェノヴェーゼの香りが強い。ジェノヴェーゼの葉っぱは肉厚で瑞々しいので、これで自家製バジルソースを作ったら美味しそうです。

According to the sales copy, Everleaf basils have delayed flowering, which enables you to harvest more leaves than with other cultivars.  There was another, called Thai, but I prefer broader leaves.  The Genovese variety has large leaves with a substantial feel, so I am looking forward to making basil sauce with this.

こちらはレモンの香り。顔を近づけるとほのかにレモンです。葉っぱを１枚むしって傷つけると、文句なしのレモン強香！ この香りなら用途が広そう。

This is 'Lemon' cultivar.  When I put my face close to the plant, there was a subtle lemon smell.  Then I took a leaf and bruised it, the unmistakable lemon scent hit my nostrils.  I could think of many uses for this variety.

花が咲きにくく長く葉っぱを収穫できるというなら、大きめの鉢で伸び伸び育ってもらおうと思います。

If flowering is delayed and, therefore, I can use the leaves for much longer than standard basil plants, these plants needed large pots so as to keep on growing.

数週間前、コーネリアンチェリーのパイオニア苗が到着した日に買ったリーガーベゴニアは、当初の花が全部終わってからは別ものになってしまいました。作落ちどころではありません。新たに咲く花は小さいし、花が開いて３日目くらいからは花の中心がススが着いたかのように黒っぽくなります。

The Rieger begonia that I bought a few weeks ago, on the day when the Cornus mas Pioneer arrived, has been a disappointment.  After the initial flowers were gone, the subsequent flowers became smaller and smaller.  Moreover, the centre of the flower becomes black, as if it gets soot or black mould, a few days after flower opening.

これが現在の花のようす。大きさは昔からある普通のベゴニアの花と大して違いません。少なくとも、従来品種の花はススっぽくなく清潔感がある。

This is how the flowers look now.  The size of the flower is not much larger than those of the most basic cultivars that have existed for decades.  At least, flowers of the basic cultivars are clean looking, and no soot.

ということで、突然ベゴニアが好きになり、従来品種も買ってきました。何で今まで一度もベゴニアというものを育てたことが無かったのか不思議なくらいです。従来品種は全部で３株ゲット。どれも直径9cmのビニールポットで窮屈そうだったので、買ってすぐにナイフで複数の株に切り分けてから植え付けました。そんな大手術をされた後でも全く衰弱することなく花を次々と咲かせています。

I had never had any begonia in my life before the Rieger begonia.  Since then, I have become quite fond of the basic type and got 3 of them.  They all came in 9cm diameter plastic pots which were too small for them.  As soon as I got home, I divided each of the plant with a knife into a few lumps before planting them in pots.  Even after such a drastic measure, the plants have been robust, which I find endearing.

ネットで調べたら、ベゴニアの花はビタミンCを含むエディブルフラワーだそうです。苗を買ったときに着いていた花や蕾は育苗業者の薬がかかっているかもしれないので３回全て除去し、その後出て来た花を食べてみました。むかーし味わったことのあるような、と思って記憶をたどったら、山ツツジの花の味を思い出しました。酸っぱいなかに、ほんの僅かな苦味もある。この酸っぱさならサラダの色どりに使えそうだし、冷たいスイーツに添えるのもよさそうです。

According to the internet, begonia flowers are edible with lots of Vitamin C.  I removed all the flowers and flower buds 3 times in all, since they might be carrying pesticide from their nurseries.  After that, I felt tempted to try a flower to see how it tasted.  It tasted faintly familiar - something I knew from my childhood days - it was similar to the taste of wild azalea flowers (we have a non-toxic azalea variety growing in mountains).  It was sour, with a very faint bitterness.  I would like to add these flowers in salads.  I may even use them as a garnish for cold sweets.
