防蝶ネットのケージ Buidling a vegetable cage, etc

家の北側通路に何年も前に自然発生したピンクのヒメオウギが、今年も少しずつ開花しています。 

Freesia laxa flowers are starting to open on the northside footpath.  It started many years ago with a single seed that might have attached itself on my clothes after I visited my neighbour's garden.

去年から１輪だけ朱色のも咲き始めました。これから増えて欲しいです。

Among the pink flowers, I noticed a red one last year.  I hope this will multiply in the future.

矮性ラズベリーのルビービューティが順次 熟しています。風味はジョーンスクワイアと比べれば少し劣るけど、地上部の扱いやすさも踏まえると十分魅力的な品種です。また、早生でJSやブラックベリーの前、しかもカメムシが登場する前に収穫できるのも有難い。
The dwarf raspberry, Ruby Beauty (or, Raspberry Shortcake) is doing well in the current spot (it was not happy in a pot).  This variety's berries may not be as good as Joan Squire's, but when I take into account the ease of managing the canes, this is an excellent variety to have.  Also, its berries mature before Joan Squire or Navaho blackberry, and before the stink bugs start to appear.

ケールがモンシロチョウの害に会っています。青虫と競争するかのように葉っぱを収穫するのに疲れ気味。下の写真では、左の２鉢がポルトガルケール、右の１鉢は先日バルコニーから下してきた普通のケール。写真奥のポルトガルケールは今朝も蝶々を追い払ったあと、使えそうな葉っぱを収穫しました。手前のは救いようがない状態です。

バルコニーに置いてあった普通のケールは、庭に下したついでに10号鉢へと鉢増ししたら急激に育ち始めました。

Cabbage butterflies have been raiding my kales.  As a result, I have been forced to pick leaves in competition with green bugs, and I am getting tired of it.  In the photo below, the two plants on the left are Portuguese kale, and the one on the right is a regular kale which I brought down from the balcony the other day.  The Portuguese kale in the back is looking bald, because I picked the salvageable leaves after chasing away a few butterflies this morning.  The one in front is beyond hope.

これがダメージが大きすぎるポルトガルケール。青虫が株の芯の最も新鮮な新芽に集中してウヨウヨしていました。芯が食べ尽くされたのではポルトガルケールの長所が生かされません。よって、この株はボツ。

The green bugs were concentrated on the core of the plant, where the leaves were the tenderest.  Once the core is eaten up, the advantage of Portuguese kale is gone.  So, I decided to get rid of it.

ということで、バルコニーにあった新たなポルトガルケールを10号鉢に鉢増しして置き換えました。
Instead, I brought down a Portuguese kale from the balcony and repotted it in a 30cm diameter pot, as a replacement.

もう毎日モンシロチョウの訪問に目を光らせるのは疲れるので、有り合わせのネットと百均で買って来た支柱とU字型のアーチパイプでケージを組み立てました。慣れない作業で延々と時間がかかりましたが、何とか完成。

To save myself watching out for butterfly visits, I decided to build a vegetable cage.  I built the structure with U-shaped props that I bought from a 100-yen shop, as well as old props and nets at hand.  I had never done it before, and it took me a long time to finish.

マス目が大きいですが、飛来する蝶々の侵入は防げると思います。また、後で気づいたことですが、マス目が大きいので網を開けずにホースで水やりできるのは便利です。「扉」の開け閉めは、付属のクリップのような金具を外すだけなので楽。葉っぱを収穫するときと追肥のときだけ開けます。

The nets vary in size - some pieces with 1.5cm squares, and others with 2.0cm squares.  However, they are small enough to prevent butterflies flying in.  A pleasant surprise I noticed later was that due to the large square sizes, I could water the kale plants without opening the cage.  If I wanted to open the cage, I undo the clips that came with the nets.  However, I will be opening the 'door' only to pick the leaves or add fertiliser.

玄関から見るとこんな感じ。ポルトガルケールの数年後の高さを想定して組み立てたので、よい練習になりました。霜が降りる冬には鉢を軒下へ移動させますが、夏にチョウが飛んでいるうちはこのままで行きます。

View of the cage from the front door.  When I built it, I assumed the height of Portuguese kales in a few years' time, so this has been a useful trial.  I will be moving the pots under the balcony in winter, but as long as butterflies keep coming during summer, the cage will stay.

作業が終わったときは夕方近くで、タイガは退屈して門のそばで寝入っていました。ここなら顔なじみの人たちが通りすがりに声を掛けてくれます。

When I finally completed the cage, it was already nearing dusk.  Taiga was bored and placed herself in front of the gate.  Here, her fans would call her name as they passed by.

イチジクの蕾など Flower buds on new fig plant etc

 4月27日に買ったイチジクのゴールドフィグに蕾が出て来ました。元々太い木だったので運良ければ今年から実が生るかも、と期待してはいましたが嬉しいです。

The gold fig plant that I bought on 27th April this year has flower buds already.  Given the stout tree trunk, I was hoping to see some fruits sometime this year, so I am quite pleased.

葉腋ごとに蕾が出ている。

Every leaf axil has a flower bud.

種から育てたボリジ（写真手前）が育っています。大きくなる植物のようで、スペース難から門の外に出してあります。ここに鉢を置いた当初 庭仕事をしていたら、通りがかった年輩ご夫婦の男性のほうの「何だ、この菜っ葉は！」と、まるで気分を害したような声が聞こえました。それくらい異様な雰囲気があります。

I grew these borage plants (the pot in front) from seeds.  Since they are large plants and I am severely short of space in my garden, I placed the pot outside of the gate.  Soon after, when I was working among the plants in the garden, an elderly couple passed by.  The husband, when he saw the borage plants, uttered 'What on earth are these leaves!', as if he was morally offended, and I agreed in my heart that they were not the most beautiful looking plants.

Same blue flowers as I have seen in photos.  These plants have been disappointing to me in many respects, so they may not stay here for long.

その背後に置いてあるトゲ無しノイバラは、今年の春に買って以来よく育っています。来年の開花は間違いなさそう。今のところ本当にトゲ無しなので満足です。

In the back is the thornless multiflora wild roses that I bought in early spring.  It has grown a lot, and I am expecting to see flowers next year.  So far, this plant has lived up to its reputation of being 'thornless'.

矮性ラズベリーのルビービューティの第一果が色づいていました。葉っぱの陰でベリーが隠れているので今朝まで気づきませんでした。

Berries on the dwarf raspberry, Ruby Beauty (Raspberry Shortcake in the US) are growing well.  Since the berries are hidden underneath the leaves, I did not notice a red berry until this morning.

これです。こうやって枝をはぐると、意外と沢山の実がなっている。地植えパワーのようです。

This is the one ready to be picked.  When I lifted the branches, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many young berries there were.  Perhaps this is the benefit of growing in the ground, rather in a pot.

開花中の植物 What's in bloom

 冬の間に買った原種系デイジー「アルムの空」が鉢植えで弱り始めていました。この株を買った当時に見たYouTube動画では、育て方の注意点として「鉢植えで管理する」と、ある園芸店の店長が話していましたが、失うものはないと思い試しに地植えにしてみたら（写真左）復活してきました。対して、写真右のタラゴンは相変わらず成長の兆しが見えません。

The wild daisy that I bought during winter was losing its vigour.  When I first bought this plant, I checked on the YouTube how to look after it.  A plant shop owner was saying that we should keep it in the pot so as to move it to a shade during summer.  However, seeing the plant getting weaker by the day, I felt I had little to lose and planted it in the ground (left).  It has rebounded and the plant itself is almost double its original size.  

株が太ったので花数も増えています。毎日新しい蕾が上がってきて翌日には開花するので、花が絶えることはありません。ラベルの通りこれで秋まで咲くのなら非常に有難い植物です。

As the whole plant grew larger, I got more flowers.  Every day, I see new flower buds coming up and opening the following day.  This plant has been blooming constantly since I bought it a few months ago.  According to the label, the flowering season lasts up to the start of autumn.  If true, what a valuable plant to have.

The dwarf raspberry, Ruby Beauty, has started flowering.

どの株にもこの開花状態です。花数は極めて少ないので豊産性とは言えないけど、場所を取らないし樹形が乱れないので気に入っています。

On each stem, a few flowers are open like these.  You do not get many flowers on this variety, therefore not exactly a prolific producer, but they take up little space and there is no need to trim them to keep them in shape.

来年用の新芽が出ています。

去年、春ジオンのピンクの花が咲くのが可愛いので自分で育てようと空き地のを拉致してきたら、家の前で出くわした近所の娘さんがそれを見たとたんに「貧乏草」と呼んだのでショックを受けました。それでも個人的に好きな花なので、道からは見えない玄関近くの一角で育てています。

Last year, I brought home some daisy fleabane (Erigeron philadelphicus) from a field.  The flowers were in deep pink and I wanted to grow them at home, so I plucked a few of them before the Ward Office people came to get rid of weeds.  When I came home, a neighbour's daughter called it 'poor man's flower' (apparently, it means that the flowers can be found even in a poor person's garden).  I was shocked, but I still love them.  So, I keep them away from the eyes of passersby, at the deep end of my garden.

この赤味の強いのが好みです。

I particularly like these deep pink ones.

この株の花は変わっていて、青味がかった薄紫色です（写真では変わりづらいかも）。

This one is unusual in that the flowers are blueish lilac colour. (my camera does not do justice).

春ジオンは野草なので、うちでも自然発生はするのですが、白っぽい花ばかりです。

Since daisy fleabanes are 'weeds', they do grow naturally in my place, too.  However, they are white flowers.

家の北側通路で今年も何本か出ていますが、夕方にしか日が当たらないので開花にはまだ時間がかかりそうです。

There are quite a few coming out on the North side of my house.  Since this foot path gets direct sunlight only in the late afternoon, the fleabanes are still too young and flowering will be delayed until May.

ブルーベリー入りのヨーグルトケーキを焼きました。ブルーベリーはカナダ産の冷凍ものですが、大粒で香りが良いので気に入っていて、年に何回かジャムをつくるのにも利用しています。

I made a yogurt cake with frozen blueberries this afternoon.  The blueberries are frozen, from Canada, and I make jam with them several times every year.  They are quite large and have really nice scent.  

アイシング用にブルーベリーの果肉を濾したものを粉砂糖に混ぜました。見かけがグロい？

I added sieved blueberries into powder sugar to make icing - a bit startling appearance.

重たい果物をケーキに混ぜ込むときは、薄力粉ではなく強力粉をつかうと果物が沈まずに済みます。

Since the berries are heavy, I used plain flower so that the berries would not sink to the bottom of the baking tin.

見かけはどうとして、味はとても美味しかったです。

It may not look very inviting, but it tasted delicious.

また雨 Another rainy day

 今日また一日中雨の天気。最近 庭仕事をまめにやったのですが、実生のクリスマスローズが開花していたのを見逃していました。これは何年も前にこぼれ種から育った苗で、親は数株あったゴールド苗の一つと思われます。他品種との交配があまり進んでいなかった昔のゴールド苗は脆弱で、うちでは１-2シーズンで姿を消してしまいましたが、この実生だけは生き続けています。ただし株が増えずにずっとこのサイズのままです。

It rained all day today again.  After doing various work with my herbs recently, I realised that I had overlooked the flowering of the golden Christmas Rose.  This is a seedling from one of the several golden Christmas roses that I used to have many years ago.  Golden Christmas roses in those days were new and had not been crossbred with other varieties and they were delicate.  My golden Christmas roses lasted only for one or two seasons.  After they all disappeared, I noticed a tiny bud coming out of the ground which grew up to be this plant.  It has not grown much over the years, but at least it does not die.

もう種のさやができています（中はいつも空っぽ）。写真では明るい色の花ですが実物は濃い黄色で、とても気に入っています。

After the peak of flowering, seed pods are already forming (they are always empty).  The flower looks a little on the light side in the photo, but the actual colour is in deep yellow.  This plant is my treasure.

先日 近所のJAで買ったフレンチラベンダーが順調に育っていて、茎の一つひとつに蕾が出てきました。苗全体が満開になるのが楽しみです。

The French lavender that I got a few days ago is growing.  Now each of the stems has flower buds at the top, and it will be very pretty when in full bloom.

矮性のラズベリー「ルビービューティ」の葉っぱが展開しています。鉢植えだとコガネの幼虫に根っこが食べられるので地植えにしましたが、成長が緩慢です。写真では３本の茎が写っています。うち左側の２本が一つの株、右側の１本は去年の春にタイガに何度か掘り起こされて根っこが齧られて作落ちした株です。

Leaves on the dwarf raspberry, Ruby Beauty, are expanding.  While it was planted in a pot, the roots were prone to damages by bugs of scarab beetles, so I replanted them in the ground in winter 2025, near the porch door.  However, Taiga kept uprooting these plants and biting the roots.  So, in early spring last year, I relocated them in the current spot where Taiga could not reach.  They are still in the process of recovering from the damage.

今はタイガが踏み込めない場所に植わっているので安心。根元から来年用のシュートが出始めています。この品種は地下茎でどんどん増えるという印象ではありません。

At the root of one of the stems, I found a new shoot.  Unlike other types of raspberries, this variety does not spread fast through the roots.

その１本立ちの株の先っちょには、もう蕾が出ています。

無核金絲棗と早脆王棗 Seedless Silk Thread jujube and Early Crisp King jujube

 最近の寒さでナツメの葉っぱがすっかりボロボロになりました。これ↓は無核金絲棗。全部で5個の実があり、写真では熟しているように見えますが、実際に実に触るとブヨブヨして柔らかいです。まるで寒さで根っこが機能停止したため、水やりをしても果実には水分が送られていないかのよう。これが夏の間なら、炎天下で土がカラカラになり実が柔らかくなっても、水やりすると直ぐに実が石のように硬くなっていました。

Due to the recent cold weather, the leaves of jujube plants have become tattered.  This is Seedless Gold Thread Jujube.  It produced 5 fruits.  Although they may look nearly ripe, the actual fruits are squishy and not promising.  It is as though the roots have stopped functioning, and watering does not lead to supplying moisture to the fruits.  In contrast, during the summer months, even when the soil had become dry and the fruits soft, the moment I watered the plant, the fruits became rock hard.

見かけは美味しそうですが、触るとふにゃふにゃで実に水分が無いことが分かります。

The fruit may look ready for consumption, but it is soft and I can tell that it will not be juicy to eat.

半割りにして糖度を計ると高い数値ですが、実際に食べると、甘くても水分とシャキシャキの食感が無いので不味いです。

I cut the fruit in half to measure the sugar content which was extremely high.  It was indeed sweet but very dry and not nice at all.

味に関しては来年以降に期待できますが、ここで予期せぬ事実を発見。硬い種が有る。

Regarding the taste, I can expect it to improve next year onwards, since the tree will start growing earlier like a regular, established jujube plant.  However, a new finding: the fruit has a seed, although it is called 'seedless'.

どうやら、カタログの「無核」というのは決して一般的な「種無し」の意味ではなく、殻＝シイナは有ります、けど「核＝仁」はありません、という意味のようです。

It seems the definition of 'seedless' in this cultivar means that the fruit does not have the embryo, but it comes with the hard shell.  I think it is misleading to say the least.

カタログ写真を見て、すっかり私は勘違いしたようです。木質の殻ではなく、種子を覆う皮が入っている程度、と思っていましたから。

When you look at this picture saying it is a 'seedless' cultivar, wouldn't you think it comes with a seed coat, not a hard wooden shell?

モサモサの果肉なので残りの味見をする気はありませんでしたが、念のため半割にしてみたら、どれも硬い殻が入っていました。

Since the flesh was very dry, I did not bother to taste the rest.  However, I cut every one of them into halves and confirmed that they contained a hard, wooden core each.

こちらは早脆王。２個の実が生りました。

This is Early Crisp King Jujube which produced two fruits.

実を触ってみると、２個とも石のように硬いので問題ありません。

On feeling the fruits, they were both as hard as a rock, so no problem.

栽培初年度なので実は小さいけれど、ジューシーで美味しかったです。

これでナツメの2025年は終了です。来年以降は通常の芽吹きや開花が期待できるので、実の収穫も気温が高くて苗が活動中にできるでしょう。

Since this is the initial year of growth for the tree, the fruits are small.  However, they were sweet and juicy, and very enjoyable.  

This concludes 2025 for my jujube trees.  These imported first-year trees (Panzao, Seedless Gold Thread, and Early Crisp King) will start growing at a regular timing, and their fruits will ripen while the weather is warm, and their roots are still active.
