ベリーの初物 Berries ripening

ブラックベリーのナバホが熟し始めました。今日も終日雨の天気だったので、一部が地面に落ちて潰れていました。そこまで熟したのが一番甘くて美味しいのですが。

The Japanese rainy season has started and it has been raining all day today, as it did these last few days.  The blackberry Navaho berries are ripening in the rain with some of them dropping on the road.

来年用のケインを２本だけ残して、他は見つけ次第　排除しています。その２本が、連日の恵みの雨のおかげでもう２ｍを優に超えています。雨がやみ次第、摘心して脇枝が伸び出すよう誘導します。

Canes for next year are coming out one after another.  I am keeping just two of them and these have grown to above 2 meters already.

今日の収穫。ナバホはブラックベリー特有の種ゴロゴロですが、とっても甘い品種。昔、トリプルクラウンを初めて食べたとき「巨砲のよう」と思いましたが、ナバホはそれ以上に甘くて酸味とのバランスが絶妙です。写真右下の赤いのは、ジョーン・スクワイアの初物。上品な風味でとても気に入っています。

ブラックベリーが色づき Blackberry fruits' progress

 ブラックベリーのナバホがだんだんと色づいてきました。たった１本のケインの枝とは思えないくらい繁茂している。緑の葉っぱを背景に赤い実は、道行く人の目を引きます。

Blackberry "Navaho" is growing very vigorously.  Last summer, only one cane came out of the soil and I spread the branches left and right in order to maximise the exposure to the sun.

今、来年用に選んで残してある2本の太いケインが高さ1.5mくらいになっています。つい最近、地面から顔を出したばかりだったのに、タケノコの勢いです。

The cane is facing the road.  The red berries against the background of green leaves look very ornamental.  A lot of passersby have asked me what it was.

For next year, I have selected 2 canes and they are already taller than 1.5 meters.

Taiga is absorbed in watching the world go by.

しょうがないので前へ回ってカメラの方を向かせようと、「おやつ」とウソをついてみました。

I wanted her to pose for the camera, which she does not like.  So I uttered the word "treat".

一瞬チラ見、でも

She looked at me but realised I was tricking her.

すぐにウソがばれてしまいました。まーったく協調性がないというか。。。。

Japanese dogs are more like cats - they live to please themselves.

２年前の夏にオクで買った無点の鬼百合にもう蕾が見えてきました。届いたときはムカゴ？と思うくらいの極小の球根だったので、今年の展開にびっくり。去年は草丈20ｃｍくらいまでしか育たなかったけど、ムカゴがたくさん出て、それが鉢の土におちて自分からもぐりこんだので、５個くらいの球根でスタートして今は１0本以上この鉢に押し合いへし合いで育っています。その10本くらいの苗に今年のムカゴがわんさか付いているので、増え方は倍々ゲームどころではない。

"Oniyuri" (Tiger lilies) have grown well from tiny bulbs of 2 years ago.  This is a rare variety of Oniyuri since it does not get the spots on the orange petals.

これがその蕾。素芯でオレンジ色の花が咲くはずです。同じ時期に１個だけ買った無点黄花鬼百合は、「開花済み球根」だったので去年さっそく咲きましたが弱弱しい苗です。対してこの赤花のは生命力が強すぎ。

I am looking forward to seeing the flowers.  The spotless Oniyuri is so rare that I have never seen it, except the yellow flower variety I have which flowered last summer.

ベリーなど Berries etc

 ラズのルビービューティに続いてローガンベリーのワイマテも熟し始めました。タイガにお供え。タイガを最後に洗ったのは手術の前で、まだ２週間は経っていないのに、雨のせいか獣臭がきつくなっていたので昨日の雨の合間にシャンプーしました。換毛期真っ最中なので、もう、毛が抜ける抜ける。写真は、不要なものを脱ぎ捨ててちょっとだけスリムに見えるタイガです。

Taiga is in the middle of moulting.  It has been less than 2 weeks since the last shampoo but she was already smelling like a wild beast.  So I washed her yesterday and, since then, she has not stopped shedding profusely.

左がワイマテ、右はルビービューティ。ワイマテは多少早めの収穫でも、室内に２，３時間置いておくだけで急激に追熟して真っ黒になります。ラズと同様、貯蔵性ゼロの果物。

ルビービューティに関しては、数年前に買ったものと現在ある株は本当に同じ品種か、と思うほど今の株の実は美味しい。甘味が強く、香もある。しかも種が柔らかい。最初の株は木酢液を掛けすぎで枯らしてしまいましたが、ずっとあの株だとこの品種がこんなに美味しいとは知らずにいたかも。トゲなし、矮性、丈夫。直径30ｃｍ鉢でも立派な株になる。しかも観賞価値あり（’ornamental’ は「観賞用」ではない）。

Waimate loganberry (left) has started to ripen.  Even if I pick the berries a little too early, they will ripen off the tree in the room temperature within a few hours.  Ruby Beauty raspberry (right) is producing very delicious fruits - they are sweet with some aroma.

去年の夏にシンクイムシによってボロボロにされた紅玉に３個の実がついています。木自体はボロボロのままなので、葉っぱが小さい。対して、今年の春に届いた紅の夢とグラニースミスは順調で、巨大な葉っぱを展開しています。スピンドルの樹形にするために現在、訓練中。

This Kogyoku apple tree nearly died last year having been ravaged by stem borers.  The damage is permanent and the leaves are very small.  I am hoping to graft some scions onto the new apple trees I got this spring, once the winter starts.

公園で At the park

 公園で久しぶりに甲斐犬のヒナとセナを見かけたので、声を掛けたらこちらに向かってきました。タイガは座り込んで待ち伏せ。

I spotted Hina and Sena from a distance and called out to them.  As they headed towards us, Taiga sat down getting ready to meet them.

まるで想像上の藪の陰から、獲物が近づいて来るのを狙っているかのよう。こういうときは、猫のようにシッポを振って精神集中です。

Taiga is in an ambush mode hiding herself behind an imaginary bush, with her tail wagging like a cat when concentrating on the prey.

待ちきれずに飛び出しました。

She could wait no longer and dashed out prematurely.  She was in full view anyway.

昔ならこのあと大はしゃぎで追いかけっこでしたが、10歳になったタイガは自分の体力を考えて控えめ。

If it were 3-4 years ago, they would have had a good chase but, with Taiga now being 10 years old, it is a mild, friendly reunion.

ヒナは舌全体が黒い。タイガの舌は口の奥のほうに２か所黒い斑点があるだけ。

Kaiken dogs have dark spots on the tongue.  Hina being a black brindle Kai, the whole tongue is dark.  

タイガは冷たい草の上でくつろぎ始めました。

Suddenly, Taiga started relaxing on the cool grass,

せっかく久しぶりに会えたのに。。。

as if she has already forgotten her company.

帰宅して、道側に植えてあるブラックベリー、ナバホの現在を確認。

２年目の去年、太いケインが１本だけ出たので、扇型に枝を誘引しておきました。

The blackberry "Navaho" is growing well.  Last year, only one cain came out and I spread the branches into a fan shape.

地植えパワーのおかげで、まるで２，３本の株のように繁茂しています。来年用のケインがこれまでのところ５本出てきましたが、２本だけ残して太らせています。

Next year's cains have started to come out.  So far, 5 cains came out but I am keeping just 2 in order to concentrate the energy.

ブラックベリーなど Blackberries etc

 ３年くらい前から、ブラックベリーはナバホのみになりました。今満開です。毎年、翌年用のケインが１本だけ出てきますが、それが年ごとに太くなって、今あるケインは根元で直径４センチ近くあります。枝を扇型に広げて、花つきを最大限にしています。

Blackberry 'Navaho' in full bloom.  All these flowers are from just one cane, whose branches are spread sideways so as to maximise the number of flowers.  The cane seems to become bigger every year and the current cane, which came out last summer, measures almost 4cm in diameter near the ground.

ラズベリーのルビービューティーの花は雨が降っているうちに終わってしまいました。でもしっかり結実するはずです。もう来年用のケインが数本出ているので、来年は今の倍以上に繁茂するはず。

Raspberry Ruby Beauty, or Shortcake.  The flowers are almost gone and fruits are beginning to set.  

先日届いたビルベリーに極小の花が咲いています。通常のビルベリーの花でさえ、ブルーベリーの花の数分の一という小さなものなのに、この実生品種のはさらに小さい。でも耐暑性があるそうなので、この暑い練馬区でどうなるか楽しみです。それにしても清楚な外観で、こちらの心まで洗われるような気分。ムリか。

The bilberry plant that arrived recently is in bloom - tiny flowers.  The flowers are even smaller than regular bilberry flowers.  This is a seedling selected in Germany to increase heat tolerance.  

「ムリだよ」と言わんばかりの笑い顔のタイガ。夕日を背に、なんだかノスタルジックな雰囲気をかもし出しています。タイガはついに10歳になりました。相変わらず朗らかで元気に暮らしています。

Taiga has just become 10 years old - how time flies.  She is just as healthy and easy-going as she was as a puppy.

ハンザが開花 Hansa flowering

朝散歩から帰って水を飲んだあと、オレンジの木陰で休むタイガ。座布団が置いてある場所は午後にならないと日陰にならないので暑すぎるようです。今うちの庭は柑橘類の花の香で圧倒されるくらいです。まさに天国の気分。

２年前に買ったハマナス系のハンザが開花しています。今は株を育てたいので、一日花を眺めたら摘花しています。

Hansa has started to flower.  I bought this plant 2 years ago, and this is the first year of flowering.

世の中にはもっと美形のバラがいくらでも存在しますが、私はこのグシャグシャのハンザが一番好きです。去年もう１本追加で買って、この苗の横に植えてありますが、開花はまだ。

There are a lot of rose varieties in this world with far more beautiful flowers, but I love Hansa the best.

種なしスダチが本格的に開花。

Seedless Sudachi starting to flower.  This is a heavy producer every year.

ミカンの石地フリーも満開。今年はなり年なので花つきも半端ないです。

Ishiji, a mandarin orange, in full bloom.  This year should be a bumper year. after resting last year..

スモモの李王の幼果。去年の春に棒苗で届いたものが、もう鈴なりに実をつけています。李王は贈答品としても使われる品種らしいので、どんな味なのか大変楽しみです。

Riou, the plum tree that I bought in spring last year, is already producing fruits.  Riou is a popular variety used for formal presents.

ブラッドオレンジのモロと、それに高接ぎしてあるミネオラオレンジも満開。
