また雨 Another rainy day

 今日また一日中雨の天気。最近 庭仕事をまめにやったのですが、実生のクリスマスローズが開花していたのを見逃していました。これは何年も前にこぼれ種から育った苗で、親は数株あったゴールド苗の一つと思われます。他品種との交配があまり進んでいなかった昔のゴールド苗は脆弱で、うちでは１-2シーズンで姿を消してしまいましたが、この実生だけは生き続けています。ただし株が増えずにずっとこのサイズのままです。

It rained all day today again.  After doing various work with my herbs recently, I realised that I had overlooked the flowering of the golden Christmas Rose.  This is a seedling from one of the several golden Christmas roses that I used to have many years ago.  Golden Christmas roses in those days were new and had not been crossbred with other varieties and they were delicate.  My golden Christmas roses lasted only for one or two seasons.  After they all disappeared, I noticed a tiny bud coming out of the ground which grew up to be this plant.  It has not grown much over the years, but at least it does not die.

もう種のさやができています（中はいつも空っぽ）。写真では明るい色の花ですが実物は濃い黄色で、とても気に入っています。

After the peak of flowering, seed pods are already forming (they are always empty).  The flower looks a little on the light side in the photo, but the actual colour is in deep yellow.  This plant is my treasure.

先日 近所のJAで買ったフレンチラベンダーが順調に育っていて、茎の一つひとつに蕾が出てきました。苗全体が満開になるのが楽しみです。

The French lavender that I got a few days ago is growing.  Now each of the stems has flower buds at the top, and it will be very pretty when in full bloom.

矮性のラズベリー「ルビービューティ」の葉っぱが展開しています。鉢植えだとコガネの幼虫に根っこが食べられるので地植えにしましたが、成長が緩慢です。写真では３本の茎が写っています。うち左側の２本が一つの株、右側の１本は去年の春にタイガに何度か掘り起こされて根っこが齧られて作落ちした株です。

Leaves on the dwarf raspberry, Ruby Beauty, are expanding.  While it was planted in a pot, the roots were prone to damages by bugs of scarab beetles, so I replanted them in the ground in winter 2025, near the porch door.  However, Taiga kept uprooting these plants and biting the roots.  So, in early spring last year, I relocated them in the current spot where Taiga could not reach.  They are still in the process of recovering from the damage.

今はタイガが踏み込めない場所に植わっているので安心。根元から来年用のシュートが出始めています。この品種は地下茎でどんどん増えるという印象ではありません。

At the root of one of the stems, I found a new shoot.  Unlike other types of raspberries, this variety does not spread fast through the roots.

その１本立ちの株の先っちょには、もう蕾が出ています。

At the top of the same stem, flower buds are already forming.

無核金絲棗と早脆王棗 Seedless Silk Thread jujube and Early Crisp King jujube

 最近の寒さでナツメの葉っぱがすっかりボロボロになりました。これ↓は無核金絲棗。全部で5個の実があり、写真では熟しているように見えますが、実際に実に触るとブヨブヨして柔らかいです。まるで寒さで根っこが機能停止したため、水やりをしても果実には水分が送られていないかのよう。これが夏の間なら、炎天下で土がカラカラになり実が柔らかくなっても、水やりすると直ぐに実が石のように硬くなっていました。

Due to the recent cold weather, the leaves of jujube plants have become tattered.  This is Seedless Gold Thread Jujube.  It produced 5 fruits.  Although they may look nearly ripe, the actual fruits are squishy and not promising.  It is as though the roots have stopped functioning, and watering does not lead to supplying moisture to the fruits.  In contrast, during the summer months, even when the soil had become dry and the fruits soft, the moment I watered the plant, the fruits became rock hard.

見かけは美味しそうですが、触るとふにゃふにゃで実に水分が無いことが分かります。

The fruit may look ready for consumption, but it is soft and I can tell that it will not be juicy to eat.

半割りにして糖度を計ると高い数値ですが、実際に食べると、甘くても水分とシャキシャキの食感が無いので不味いです。

I cut the fruit in half to measure the sugar content which was extremely high.  It was indeed sweet but very dry and not nice at all.

味に関しては来年以降に期待できますが、ここで予期せぬ事実を発見。硬い種が有る。

Regarding the taste, I can expect it to improve next year onwards, since the tree will start growing earlier like a regular, established jujube plant.  However, a new finding: the fruit has a seed, although it is called 'seedless'.

どうやら、カタログの「無核」というのは決して一般的な「種無し」の意味ではなく、殻＝シイナは有ります、けど「核＝仁」はありません、という意味のようです。

It seems the definition of 'seedless' in this cultivar means that the fruit does not have the embryo, but it comes with the hard shell.  I think it is misleading to say the least.

カタログ写真を見て、すっかり私は勘違いしたようです。木質の殻ではなく、種子を覆う皮が入っている程度、と思っていましたから。

When you look at this picture saying it is a 'seedless' cultivar, wouldn't you think it comes with a seed coat, not a hard wooden shell?

モサモサの果肉なので残りの味見をする気はありませんでしたが、念のため半割にしてみたら、どれも硬い殻が入っていました。

Since the flesh was very dry, I did not bother to taste the rest.  However, I cut every one of them into halves and confirmed that they contained a hard, wooden core each.

こちらは早脆王。２個の実が生りました。

This is Early Crisp King Jujube which produced two fruits.

実を触ってみると、２個とも石のように硬いので問題ありません。

On feeling the fruits, they were both as hard as a rock, so no problem.

栽培初年度なので実は小さいけれど、ジューシーで美味しかったです。

これでナツメの2025年は終了です。来年以降は通常の芽吹きや開花が期待できるので、実の収穫も気温が高くて苗が活動中にできるでしょう。

Since this is the initial year of growth for the tree, the fruits are small.  However, they were sweet and juicy, and very enjoyable.  

This concludes 2025 for my jujube trees.  These imported first-year trees (Panzao, Seedless Gold Thread, and Early Crisp King) will start growing at a regular timing, and their fruits will ripen while the weather is warm, and their roots are still active.

夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 ラズベリーのジョーンスクワイアの秋果が熟し始めました。二季成り品種で、私は夏果のほうが大きくて、風味はふんわりしているので好みです。対して、秋果は酸っぱいです。そのうち野鳥が見つけて食べるでしょう。

Joan Squire raspberry's autumn fruits have started to ripen.  This cultivar produces berries twice a year, and I prefer the summer berries since they are larger and taste mild and sweet.  In contrast, the autumn berries are sour with little flavour, so I leave them for the wild birds.

夕方散歩で公園へ向かう途中、シェルティーのエマちゃんに会えました。数か月前に保護団体を通じて迎えた子で、年齢は４歳。初めて会ったときの不安そうな表情は完全に消えていて、今では家の中で女王様しているようです。

On our way to the Johoku Park for the evening walk, we ran into Emma, a 4 years old, female Shelty who was adopted by the current owners several months ago.  When she first arrived, she looked a little anxious but now there is no such anxiety in her eyes.  Now she behaves like a diva in her new home.

エマちゃんはオッドアイ。この写真では左目がまるでケガでもしているかのようですが、単に写真写りのせいです。

She has odd eyes.  In this photo, her left eye looks injured, but it is only due to photography.

タイガもエマちゃんも未だ「大」の用をたしていないので、気が散らないよう別々の方角に歩き始めました。区民農園の横を通ると、猛暑が落ち着いて作物が元気を取り戻したかのようでした。

Neither Emma nor Taiga had finished the 'big' business.  So that they could concentrate on their needs, we decided to walk in separate directions.  When we passed by the vegetable plot used by Nerima Ward residents, the plants looked recovering from the heat wave.

この青シソの株は、高さ180cmほどに伸びています。うちは毎年 庭のどこかで勝手に青シソが生えてくるのですが、花が咲いてもうとっくに終わっています。

This bush of green 'shiso' (a type of herb) has grown to about 180cm - the leaves must be tough now.  In my place, I get green shiso growing naturally every summer, and it has long finished for this year after flowering.

公園に向かって歩いているうちに偶然またエマちゃんと会ったので、一緒に歩き始めました。公園に着くと、初めて見るペキニーズの男の子がいました。名前はテン君で、１歳７か月。

On our way to the Park, we ran into Emma again, so we started walking together.  On arrival at the Park, we met a new face: a male Pekingese, named Ten, aged one year and 7 months.

とても懐こい子で、初対面のエマちゃんやタイガと落ち着いて挨拶したあとは、私にスリスリ攻撃してきました。

Ten is a very friendly puppy.  After greeting Emma and Taiga, he snuggled up to me and smothered me with kisses.

これがエマちゃんの黒い左目。ブルーの右目がいつも目立っているので、ちゃんと左目が見えるのはまれです。

This is Emma's left eye.  Her blue eye catches onlookers' attention and it is rare to see her dark eye this close.

皆との挨拶が済むと、テン君は冷たい草の上で涼み始めました。

After warmly greeting us, Ten crouched on the cool grass and looked comfortable.

公園の上に登る途中の「窪地」と呼ばれる広場では、トウカエデの葉っぱが僅かに黄色くなっていました。もう９月中旬、黄葉の秋はすぐそこまで来ていると思うと、あっという間に今年が過ぎてしまいそうです。

In the field that is close to the top of the park, some of the deciduous trees were starting to turn yellow.  That reminded us about the progress of the season.  Soon, it will be the time for trees to turn into full autumn colours, which will take us closer to the end of this year.  Time flies fast at my age.

うちのすぐ近所まで戻ると、６時２分前で西の空が暗いです。これからは秋雨が頻繁に降る時期のようです。

When we came close to our home, at 5:58 p.m., the sky was dark in the west with heavy clouds.  It seems that we are now entering the season of autumn rains.

ワイマテの移植 Transplanting Waimate

 ブラックベリーのナバホは今年の収穫のあと撤去しました。その前に、収穫した実は順次、両隣の家と、道の向かいの家に配り、あとは冷凍保存してありました（お向かいさんの両隣は？というと、片方は公園、もう一方は現在空き家状態です）。

冷凍してあった実の約半分を出して、ジャムを作ることにしました。まず、水も何も加えずに実が柔らかくなるまで弱火で煮たら、種を取り除くためにザルと木ベラで、少量ずつ根気よく濾します。写真は種を取り除いた果肉を、綺麗に洗った鍋に戻したところ。この状態でかなり濃くなっています。

I removed the Navaho blackberry plant after this year's harvest.  Prior to that, I distributed Navaho berries, as and when harvested, among my immediate neighbours - left and right, as well as the house opposite (what about left and right of the opposite house?  Well, on the right, there is a park, and on the left, the house is uninhabited currently).  I froze the remaining berries.

Of the frozen berries, I took half out of the freezer to make jam.  I simmered the berries without adding anything, not even water.  When the flesh was soft, I sieved it little by little, using a sieve and a wooden spatula.  It was time-consuming but necessary, in order to make it delectable.  I then washed the pot clean, before putting the sieved berries back (photo below).

砂糖を加えて更に煮ると、ほどなくして木ベラの裏に大きな雫が着くほど濃厚になりました。ブラックベリーって、ナチュラルペクチンが豊富なのかも？念のため、市販のペクチンも少量使って仕上げました。あっけなく完成したので、あわててカラス瓶を熱湯消毒。

The sieved flesh was already very thick and, when I added sugar, it did not take long before I got large dews hanging underneath the wooden spatula.  Are blackberries rich in natural pectin?  To make sure, I added a little store-bought natural pectin to finish.  It was done in such a short time that I had to rush to boil the glass jar.

ドイツ産のガーキンが入っていた大瓶にちょうどの量でした。

The amount was just right for the large jar which used to contain gherkins from Germany.

種が一個も入っていないスムーズなブラックベリージャム。冷めたら冷蔵庫で一晩冷やしてから使います。

Smooth blackberry jam without any pits.  When the jar is lukewarm, I will put it in the fridge and cool it overnight.  

直ぐに味見したいので、別に少量を冷蔵庫で冷やします。ジャムの奥の方の盛り上がりから、粘り具合が伺えます。

In the meantime, I want to taste the finished product.  So, I kept a drop in a plate to cool it quickly in the fridge.  You can see the viscosity from the shine at the deep end.

ナバホを掘り上げた跡地は、苦土石灰を漉き込んで準備してあります。最近の大雨でかなり落ち着いたのでは。
After uprooting the Navaho plant, I tilled the spot with magnesium lime.  It should have been mixed enough after the recent rainy days.

移植するワイマテはこれ。ツルの先端が門の近くで着地して、2,３年前から自然に発根していたものです。こんな日陰でも実をつけていました。

The Waimate to be transplanted is this one.  A vine touched down and rooted naturally here a few years ago.  Even in this shade, it has been producing fruits.

細根がほぼゼロ！ かなり心配な状態ですが、もし植え付けに失敗したら、他にも候補者が控えています。

I do not see any fine roots!  It is worrying, but if it fails, there are other, smaller candidates.

植え付け完了。左右にバラのハンザが植わっています。ワイマテのツルはナバホほどには密生しないので、今後ハンザも良く育つはずです。

Transplanting is done.  Hanza rose is on either side of Waimate.  Since Waimate does not branch out like Navaho, Hanza roses should fare better in the future.

ナバホの大株を撤去した日に、来年以降用のシュートを掘り上げておきました。

When I got rid of the large Navaho plant, I dug out young shoots for growth next year onwards.

掘り上げたときは細根がほとんど無かったけど、雨のおかげで元気になりました。秋までには根っこが張っているはずなので、冬の前に大鉢に植え替える予定です。

These did not have fine roots, either, when first dug out.  However, after the recent rain, the shoots have recovered well.  They will have grown vigorously by autumn, and I plan to repot these in a larger container then.
