ナツメ新苗など Jujube new plant etc

 新疆棗王の苗が春になっても芽吹かなかったので、４月下旬に先端20cmほどを徐々に切ってみたら、芯まで乾燥していました。そこで写真とともに販売元へ事情を説明して替わりの苗を送ってもらえることになりました。その苗が今日届きました。

The Xinjiang jujube tree that I bought in November last year never budded.  So, in late April, I made cuts to see if the tree was alive or not.  After cutting about 20cm from the top little by little, I saw that the trunk was completely dry.  I contacted the seller immediately to explain what was happening.  Having seen the photos I sent them, they agreed that the plant was not viable and offered that they would send me a replacement tree with new buds actually growing.  The promised replacement arrived today.

今日は朝から雨で涼しく高湿度なので、苗への負担を考えると植え付けに最適な天気です。ビニールポットを切るのはもったいないですが、根っこを痛めないように犠牲にしました。

Today was a rainy day all day.  Being cool with high humidity, it was an ideal weather for the plant to be potted, in order to minimise the burden on the young plant.  I cut open the plastic pot so as not to damage the roots.

継ぎ目がスムーズなので分かりづらいですが、たぶん、このあたり？

直径30cmの鉢に植え付け。元肥には牛糞と鶏糞を少し入れました。枝葉の成長具合を見ながら、そのうち配合有機肥料も入れたいです。

I used a 30cm diameter pot.  I mixed cow manure as well as chicken manure into the soil.  As the branches grow further, I will be adding organic mixed fertiliser, too.

継ぎ目は、たぶんこれで地上に出ていると思います。

I hope I got the fusion point above the ground.

よーく見ると、既に恒常的な枝が全部で３本出ています。

On closer inspection, I realised that the plant already had 3 permanent branches growing.

こちらは春になっても芽吹かなかったほうの新疆棗王苗。念のため今日まで水やりしてきましたが、もう代替苗が来たので、思い切って根元付近で切ってみることにしました。

This is the Xinjiang jujube plant that never budded.  Just in case it had some hope, I have been watering this like other jujube plants.  Since a replacement has come, however, I decided to make a bold cut to learn what was happening.

これがその結果。形成層に水分が無いだけでなく、芯が古木のように空洞になっています。

I cut the trunk close to the fusion point.  Not only was the cambium layer dry, but the core of the trunk was hollow like an old tree.

雨のなか、フェイジョアが咲いています。昔はフェイジョアに力を入れていたけど、実の品質にバラツキがあり過ぎるので今では隣家との目隠しにしています。今日は一日中雨なのでヒヨドリが来ていませんが、つがいで毎年やってきます。

The feijoa trees are in bloom.  I used to be passionate about these fruit trees.  However, the quality of fruits was not consistent, both in texture and taste.  These days, I use them as the shield between my neighbours' gardens and mine.  Normally, Japanese bulbuls come in pairs to pick the petals, but not today due to the rain.

ここは陽当たりが悪いので、「オニヒカゲワラビ」を根元に植えています。うちに来てもう15年くらい経ちますが、深山の植物なので暑い練馬の住宅街では増えません。でも、タイミングよく新芽を摘むことができれば、非常に美味しいワラビです。アクが無いのでまるでコゴミのような食感の一方で、風味はしっかりワラビです。

This spot is in the shade of my neighbour's house, and I keep a rare variety of edible fern.  I have had it for about 15 years, but it does not multiply.  Its natural habitat is deep in mountains and, even there, this fern is considered a rare find if you ever come across it.  With edible wild ferns, normally you have to remove the harsh taste before cooking, but that is not necessary with this variety.

フェイジョアなど Feijoa etc

 フェイジョアの開花季節になりました。狭いスペースで次から次へと様々な果樹に関心をもつうちに、フェイジョアの植わっている場所が今ではリビングの横になってしまってしまっています。

Feijoa has started to flower.  Growing many different kinds of fruit trees in a very limited space has forced me to shuffle some of them from one place to another, as my passion shifts.  As a result, feijoa trees (3 varieties) are now growing at the back of the house and next to my living room.

今朝リビングでテレビを見ていたら、ヒヨドリのつがいがやって来てフェイジョアの花びらを盛んに突き始めました。急いでカメラをとって戻ると１羽が飛び去ってしまいましたが、もう１羽はこちらをチラ見しながらも食べ続けていました。原産地の南米では、花びらを食べに訪れる野鳥の胸などに着いた花粉で受粉するそうです。フェイジョアを育て始めた十数年前には見られなかった光景ですが、今では日本でも野鳥が学んでいるようです。

今朝の散歩からの光景。元は野菜や花苗が育てられていた私有地で、今は練馬区の管理で一般に提供されている草地です。その隅っこに咲き始めた黄色い花、オオキンケイギクのようです。北アメリカ原産の植物ですが増えすぎるので、今は栽培禁止になっているそうです。
Lovely flowers in the field we visited this morning.  The yellow flowers are from North America.  They have such an ability to spread, to the detriment of indigenous plants.  It is now illegal to grow this plant but, this field having belonged to an old farm, the plant probably dates back beyond the time of prohibition.

この畑は古い農家のものだったので、禁止になる以前の昔から育てていたのかも。

タイガは減量中です。お肉のトッピングと脂肪腫との直接的な関係はどうあれ、とにかく食事内容を改善する決意をしました。

Taiga is on a diet.  Regardless of the causality of lipoma which was removed a few days ago, she needs to slim down.  Therefore, no more meat toppings.

ただし、急にドライフードのみ、というのは極端なので、これまでご飯のあとのデザートとして与えていた牛乳（最初のご飯のあと）や手作りヨーグルト（２度目のご飯のあと）をトッピング替わりにして、フードと一緒に一気に食べさせています。

先日の脂肪腫の手術のときに計った体重は 22.75 kg。一年前の５月に他の手術をしたときは25 kg でした。根気よく続けて、最終的には 20 kg にまで減らしたいです。

However, changing to just dry food would be too drastic.  So, instead of meet, she gets milk or yogurt with her dry food.  These dairy products used to be given as a dessert - a bowl of milk after the first meal with meat topping, and a bowl of home-made yogurt after the second meal with meat topping.

When she had an operation on her left ear 12 months ago, she weighed 25 kg, which came down to 22.75 kg a few days ago.  Eventually, I would like her to slim down to 20 kg but taking it slowly.

フェイジョアなど Miscellaneous

 園芸用の支柱を買いに近所のJAへ行ったら、デザートライムの接ぎ木苗が売られていました。立派な苗ですが、買う人いるのでしょうか。

I went to the gardening shop nearby to get some materials this afternoon, when I saw 'desert lime' grafted plants.  Quite healthy-looking, decent plants, but I wonder if there are people interested enough to buy.

値段は結構リーズナブルです。

The price is quite reasonable at 1,800 yen, considering the size of the plants.

フェイジョアがもう咲き始める季節のようです。うちに残っている品種は、アポロ、ニキタ、ウィキトウです。実の形状を見ずに果肉だけをブライドテイスティングしたら、私には違いが分からないほど似ていますが、せめて３品種を保持しているほうが実着きが良いです。

The feijoa (a.k.a. pineapple guava) plants in my garden are starting to flower.  I have 3 varieties: Apollo, Nikita and Wiki Tu.

ローガンベリーのワイマテが去年に増して豊作になりそうです。去年の実が一部まだ冷凍庫に残っているので、そのうち消費しなければ。

The loganberry plant, a variety called Waimate, is doing well.  This variety is so prolific that I still have some of last year's crop in my freezer.

耐寒性・耐暑性はブラックベリー並みに強いので便利な品種です。

Also, this variety is super resistant against both cold and hot weather, like blackberries.  

タイガの換毛期が始まりました。昨日のシャンプーのあと、ちょっと歩いただけで毛が柱のような塊りで浮き上がってきます。

Taiga has started to moult.  I shampooed her yesterday and, since then, lumps of loose hair rise to the surface as she walks and moves about.

玄関の外で延々とブラッシングすると蚊に襲われるので、中へ移動。ファーミネーターは優秀です。これ１本で、背中の長い毛から脚の数ミリの毛までゴッソリ取れます。

We moved inside the porch for brushing, since mosquitos are about outside.  The moulting period has only started and I shall be busy brushing her for the next 2 months.

これから２か月ちかく、抜け毛で廊下がザラザラします。スリッパの足で歩くと、シュルシュル音がするほどです（毎日掃除しても）。

フェイジョアが咲き始めました。年々、開花が早くなっています。

 長いシベを見ていると、アフリカの鳥の頭に着いている冠のような羽を想起させます。

 うちにある品種はアポロ、ニキタに加え、いただきもののウィキトウの３種です。

ブラックベリーのトリプルクラウンも、１輪だけですが開花していました。

恨み節：ナメクジか何かに和田棗の新芽が齧られていました。３日前の早朝に発見したときはガクッときましたが、以来、夕方になるとビニール袋をかぶせて紐で縛って保護してきました。羽状複葉の新芽が２本無くなっているだけでなく、真ん中の太いのは恒常的な枝で、これを主幹として育てて行く予定なのに、脇が齧られていました。３日後の今日までには主幹が少し伸びてきて、ダメージの程度が分かるようになりましたが、何とか主幹として育成できそうです。その両側の新芽には小さな蕾が見えています。

I have been protecting it by covering the plant with a plastic bag every night.

今日は暑い日だったので、冷凍ブルーベリーでジェラートを作りました。この↓レシピの真似ですが、イチゴがシーズン終わりに近づいてきたのか値段が上がり始めているので、冷凍庫にあるブルーベリーを使うことにしました。

また、冷凍の果実を使うことでかなりの時間短縮が可能になります。普通にアイスクリームなどを作る場合、夕方に準備して一晩かけて凍らせますが、今日のは夕方に冷凍庫に入れて夜の１０時には使えました。ジェラートらしい柔らかさで完璧なタイミングです。

飾り用に、数個の冷凍ブルーベリーを解凍してあります。

夜遅いので、ほんの少しだけ味見です。このカナダ産ブルーベリーは香り豊かで本当に美味しいです。

残りは明日以降の楽しみ。

キウイの幼果 Young Kiwi fruits

キウイのレインボーレッドが今年、初収穫となりそうです。シマサルナシ台の早雄にレインボーレッドを高接ぎしてあるので、開花のタイミングがぴったり合いました。


初成りということで、早々と幼果をかなり間引きしたので、これ以降は収穫まで放置です。

Kiwi: Rainbow Red (red-flesh variety)

私の人差し指の頭との比較です。レインボーレッドの実はスーパーで売ってるのを何度か食べたことがありますが、甘党の私にとって青系や黄肉系よりもはるかに美味しいキウイです。また、同じ赤肉系でも紅妃のようなクセのある風味がない上に、香りも優れているのが魅力です。

By the end of July, they should reach up to 90% of their ultimate size.

Harvest will be October-November.

矮性ラズのルビービューティーがほんの少し色づいてきました。この当初からあるケインの下のほうには、節のところで最近新芽が展開してきて蕾が出てきました。海外のサイトで「次々と花を咲かせて、同一の株からひと夏で1.5kgの実が収穫できた」というようなセールスピッチが載っていましたが、一季成りなのに「次々と」というのはこのことだったのか、と今は理解しています。

根本には来年用のケインが出てワサワサしています。こんなに密集して育つなら支柱は必要なさそうです。

オセージは細々とながら花が咲き続けています。最初にドッと出た蕾は虫の害でほぼ全滅しましたが、その後で再度チョロチョロと蕾が出てきました。花は濃いピンクで野バラのように可愛いので、私の簡易デジカメでは再現できないのが残念です。

エルダーベリーが生りそうです。普通の西洋ニワトコと先月買ったブラックタワーの花粉を交換してみたら、上手く受粉したようです。実験だったので、それぞれ１房ずつしかありません。

今朝のシャワーの後で窓を開けて気づいたのですが、フェイジョアの開花がもう始まったようです。家の北西コーナーに移動させたので、奥の細道を伝って行きます。

 今朝、咲き始めたばかりのようです。それにしても早い。十数年前に初めてのフェイジョア（マンモス）を育てていたときは、梅雨の真っ最中を開花のめどと考えていたような気がします。

 今年の春先にものすごい嵐が何度も到来して苗が倒れそうになったので、地上部を軽くするために主枝を２本だけ残してあとはバッサリと切りました。その後の回復で新芽に蕾がどっさり出てきたので、剪定は秋以降はダメということは無いようです。
