ブラッドオレンジ Blood oranges

 ブラッドオレンジのモロを２月に収穫しましたが、その前にビデオを撮っておいたのを今日になってやっと編集しました。

I harvested the Moro blood oranges in February this year.  Just before that, I took some videos but did nothing about them until today, when I finally edited and uploaded a video on YouTube.

モロの完熟は2月下旬ですが、その以前からヒヨドリが突き始めるので、2月上旬に一気に収穫して毎日ジュースを飲んでいます。オレンジジュースはモロ以外では物足りなくなるほど気に入っています。

今日、一部を使ってジャムを作ることにしました。皮は内側のワタ等を取り除いてから2度湯がいて、細切りにして、柔らかくなるまで煮ます。

My Moro oranges mature in late February.  However, wild birds (especially Japanese bulbuls) start pecking them well before that.  So, I picked all the fruits in early February and have been enjoying juices every day.  Having got used to the rich taste and flavour of Moro, I cannot enjoy other types of oranges as much.  

Today, I used some of the fruits to make jam.  I removed the inner soft skins from the peel, before blanching them twice and cutting them into thin strips.

ハイビスカスローゼルの種はペクチンが豊富なので、小分けして冷凍保存してありました。オレンジの皮の下処理をしている間、同時にローゼルの種をグツグツ煮てペクチンを抽出。濾した汁とジュースで、細切りにした皮を煮ます。皮と搾り汁の合計に対して砂糖50%。

Last autumn, I found out that the hibiscus roselle seeds contained a lot of pectin, and I preserved them in small packets in the freezer.  I cooked the roselle seeds to extract pectin, while I was working on the orange peels.  Together with the sliced peels and the orange juice, the total weight came to 1.3kg and I used 50% sugar.

ローゼルのペクチンのおかげで、今までにない短時間でジャムが出来上がりました。しかも、量が多い。いつもはこの半分まで煮詰めないと固まりません。

Thanks to the roselle pectin, the jam was ready in much less time than normal.  Moreover, the quantity was almost twice the normal amount.

ドイツ産のガーキンが入っていた大瓶に詰めました。左の瓶はこのあと煮沸消毒して保存。右のはすぐに使い始めるので煮沸消毒なし。

I used the large jars which used to contain gherkins from Germany.  The jar on the left was boiled after this, while the jar on the right was left as it was since I would be using it immediately.

とても美味しいジャムです。

グラグラの熱湯で30分以上 煮沸消毒した直後。フタの内側が膨らんでいます。

I boiled the full jar for more than 30 minutes, right after which the inner part of the lid was looking bulging.

冷めると「ペコンッ」という音がして、フタの内側が凹みます。これが、きちんと煮沸消毒ができた証拠です。

When the jar cooled down, I heard the sound which told me that the sterilisation had been done properly - the inner part of the lid now looks caved in.

オレンジ落果 Orange fallen off

ここ数日よく雨が降りました。昨夜は強風もあったので、今朝の散歩で外に出るとオレンジが1個落ちていました。大実柚子苗に高接ぎしてあるセミノールとモロの根元です。

We had several days' rainy weather up until last night, with winds getting stronger.  When I stepped out of the porch this morning for Taiga's morning walk, I saw an orange among the grass.  It was at the foot of a small Yuzu tree on which Seminole and Moro branches are grafted and growing well.

果皮のようすから判断して、セミノール。

Judging by the outer skin, it looks like a Seminole.

たぶんこの枝のあたりから落果。セミノールの果皮は濃い朱色でツヤがあります。ただし、うちのはヘソが着きません。昔ググったネット情報によると、ヘソなしの個体もあるそうで。個人的にはこのスムーズな形のほうが気に入っています。

It probably fell off this branch.  The skin of Seminole is a deep orange colour, and it has a shine as if just polished.  However, my Seminole does not get a belly button.  According to the information I saw a few years ago, some Seminole oranges come without belly buttons.  I personally prefer mine which are smooth and almost spherical.  

こちらは同じ木に接いであるモロ。ここまで色づくと果皮は甘い花のような香りがします。

These are Moro fruits of branches grafted on the same Yuzu tree.  When the skin becomes this red, it gives off a sweet, flower-like scent.

こちらはモロの親木。モロもセミノールも２月頃から収穫しています。地元スーパーや池袋のデパ地下の輸入果物コーナーには４月頃に並ぶようです。単価は高いのに小粒で貧相。

This is the original Moro tree, standing nearby.  I start harvesting both Moro and Seminole in February.  I see imported Moro and Seminole in our local supermarkets and the fruit shelves in department stores in Ikebukuro.  They are priced high, and, yet the fruits are small and not looking fresh.

半割りにしてみると、種が入っている。１本の小さな木にモロと一緒に接がれているので、開花期が重なると種が入ってしまいます。

恒例の糖度計。実の軸が着いていた半分は14.8%。

I cut the fruit into halves to find it had several seeds.  This is not surprising, since Seminole and Moro are grafted on the small Yuzu tree and, if their flowering coincides, there will be cross-pollination resulting in seeds.

According to the Brix meter, the sugar content was 14.8%, with the top half closest to the branch.

果頂部は16.9%でした。先日のサンシュユが40%台で、糖度計が壊れているのかと怪しみましたが、今日の数値を見て安心しました。ただし、実際に実を食べてみると、サンシュユよりもこのセミノールのほうが比較にならないほど甘くて美味しかったです。

The other half showed 16.9%.  When I saw the sugar content exceeding 40% with the Japanese cornel the other day, I thought that the gadget was broken.  Today, seeing these figures, I am assured that it is working.  However, when I actually tasted the orange, this was far sweeter and more delicious than the cornel fruit.

菊の季節 Chrysanthemum season

 庭の菊が満開に近くなりました。これは玄関前の食用菊「松風」。食用菊とはいっても、せっかく咲いた花がもったいなくて毎年ほとんど利用せずに眺めて終わります。

The chrysanthemums are almost in full bloom.  This bunch in the photo below is an edible variety called Matsukaze.  Although an edible variety, I love them too much to actually pick and eat them.  So, I end up just admiring them every year.

今年はピンクの食用菊がほぼ全滅状態なので、道路側から見ると黄色の花しか目にはいりません。

I also try to grow pink edible chrysanthemums, but they are too delicate and not doing well this year.  As a result, when looked at from the street, only the yellow flowers are visible.

門の外に置いてあるのは2,3年前に買った厚物の菊。草丈30cmくらいの茎に１輪だけの見事な花が咲いていました。それ以降はこのように自然体。年々 株が大きくなっています。

The plant placed outside of the gate is the one I bought a few years ago, as a large, single flower variety.  It had a huge flower at the top of a 30cm stem.  Since then, the plant has been growing in a natural way with multiple flowers.

自然体だと花の形は崩れるけど、花数が多いほうが賑やかで好みです。

When left in a natural state, the shape of the flowers becomes disorderly, but I find them lively and happy with many flowers.

The nearest plant on the left of the photo is the one I bought last year, as 'dahlia' chrysanthemum.  However,

どう見てもダリア咲きではありません。

they do not look like dahlias at all.

その背後に置いてある懸崖鉢の株は食用菊の「阿房宮」。

The plant behind the 'dahlia' chrysanthemum is a famous edible variety that is from Aomori Prefecture.

中輪咲きで観賞用にも適していると思います（やはり勿体なくて眺めるだけ）。

The flowers are medium-sized, and they are good as ornamental variety, too.

オレンジも色づき始めています。玄関に向かって通路の右側に植わっているのは、大実柚子を中間台にしたミネオラとモロのオレンジ。まだ実の数が少ないので、個々の実のサイズは左側に植わっているモロ+ミネオラの実よりも大きくて立派です。

The oranges are getting colourful.  The small tree in front of the porch, on the right, is a Yuzu tree with Moro and Mineola grafted on it.  Since there are not many fruits on this tree, the sizes of the fruits are larger than those on the mature Moro tree which is located on the left.

こちらは左側のモロと、高接ぎしてあるミネオラ。色づき始めたばかりなので、区別がつきにくいですが、年を越す頃にはモロの果皮が真っ赤になるので分かります。

This is the Moro tree on the left, with Mineola branches grafted on it.  As they have just started to turn orange, the difference between the two varieties is not obvious.  However, from January onwards, Moro will start to turn dark red.

天気が良いので明るいうちに公園へ行きました。びっこをひくほど足が痛い日は目立たないように暗くなってから午後の散歩に出ていますが、今日は調子がよかったです。坐骨神経痛が始まってもう一月以上ストレッチ運動をしています。全身が温まっている状態なら痛みなしで歩けるけど、寒さが大敵で外に出たとたん逆戻りです。なので、開き直って今年の冬は痛みと付き合う覚悟です。初夏の暑い気候になれば、きっと治ると楽観しています。

As it was a relatively warm day today, we went to the park while it was light.  When the pain in my leg is too much and I walk with a limp, we go out after dark for our afternoon walk.  Today was a good day.  My sciatica started more than a month ago and I have been doing exercises.  When my whole body is warm staying indoors, I can walk without pain, but the moment I go out into the cold, the pain comes back.  So, I am resigned to the idea that I have to live with this for the whole of this winter.  I feel optimistic that once the weather turns warm next year, I will be all right.

気づけばタイガの口の周りが随分と白くなっていました。現在12歳半です。

Taiga is getting white around her mouth - she is 12 1/2 years old now.

全体的な毛ヅヤは良いし、散歩中に知り合いのワンコに出会うと自分から遊びに誘うので、気持ちは若いようです。

Nevertheless, she has a shiny coat, and she is young in her heart and invites other dogs to play when she meets familiar faces.

オレンジ類 Orange trees

 2013年11月9日に、それまで鉢植えで実着きだったブラッドオレンジのモロを現在の場所に植え付けました。その後ふたたび実が着き始めるには時間がかかりましたが、一旦樹勢が落ち着くと非常に豊産性でした。モロは果皮が濃い赤色になるので、色彩に乏しい冬の間、観賞価値もある果樹です。また、この木にはセミノールを高接ぎしてあり、同様に豊産性です。

問題は、10年以上も経つうちに木が年々大きくなり、剪定が追い付かないことです。今は木の下のほうだけ枝を整理している状態。

I planted this blood orange, Moro, in this spot, on 9th November 2013.  It had been growing in a 30 cm diameter pot, with a few fruits on it.  It took some years before the tree started growing fruits again, but once it did, the tree has been extremely prolific.  Moreover, the fruits with dark red colour were conspicuous as well as ornamental, in winter when there were hardly any cheerful colours.  This tree also has Seminole grafted on it, which is also prolific.

However, after over 10 years, during which time the tree has grown steadily, pruning the branches is getting extremely difficult.  I now tidy up only the lower part of the tree.

The tree has a lot of young fruits again.

この木を他のものに置き換える可能性も考えて、モロとセミノールはすでに他の地植え苗に高接ぎしてあり、既に実がつくようになりました。

A few years ago, I started thinking about replacing this tree with something else.  In preparation for that, I have been grafting Moro and Seminole on other citrus trees, and they are already starting to fruit.

これは玄関から見て左側の花壇に植えた大実柚子で、モロ、セミノール、そして一箇所には金柑のプチマルの小枝が実をつけています。木の下のほうだけ大実柚子の枝を残してあります。

This is Yuzu growing in the ground, on the left to the porch door and opposite to the old Moro tree across the path leading to the gate.  I have grafted Moro, Seminole, as well as a tiny scion of seedless kumquat which already has fruits on it.  The lower part of the tree is left as Yuzu.

こちらはいかにもモロの果皮。実がつかないうちは、どの枝がどの品種か分からなくなったときは、葉っぱをクシャクシャにして臭い嗅ぎをすると僅かに違いがあるので判断していました。

These are Moro fruits which is obvious from the skin of the fruit.  I grafted 2 scions each of Moro and Seminole on this tree.  When I got confused which branch was which cultivar, I used to break the leaves and sniff the scent - the difference in scent is subtle but I could tell.

この木はその横、門の近くに植わっている種無しカボスです。こちらは2,3年前から接ぎ始めたばかりなので、高接ぎはまだほんの一部です。

This is Seedless Kabosu and stands next to Yuzu.  I only started grafting on this tree a few years ago, so the tree remains largely Seedless Kabosu.

この苗に接いであるセミノールには、未だ蕾が出たこともありません。

This branch is Seminole, grafted on Seedless Kabosu.  It was still too young last spring to get flower buds.

接木箇所はスムーズで、養分が順調に送られているはずです。

The fusion point is smooth. which ensures that the scion is getting enough supply of nutrition.

ミカンの石地も接いであります。

There is also Ishiji tangerine grafted on Seedless Kabosu.

石地は一箇所に２本の枝を着いであるので、将来的には鉢植えの親木よりも沢山の実がなることを期待しています。

I grafted 2 scions close to each other.  When these grow, I am hoping that these branches will produce more fruits than the parent tree growing in a pot.

また雨 Rain again

 昨日の夕方から降り出した雨は、今日の昼過ぎまでジトジト続いていました。よって、今朝の散歩は雨合羽着用です。近所の家の花壇では、もうニオイバンマツリが満開になっていました。

The rain that started yesterday evening lasted until after midday today.  For this morning's walk, Taiga had to put on the raincoat.  In the flower bed of our neighbour's house, the Brunfelsia latifolia was in full bloom already.

咲き始めは濃い紫で、咲き進むにつれ白く変化します。名前のとおり強香を放ちますが、今朝は雨のせいか臭いませんでした。以前、自分でも育てていましたが、神経毒を持っていると知ってからは処分しました。

The flower is in deep purple to start, then the colour turns to white in a few days.  It has a very strong sweet scent normally, but due to the rain this morning, I did not notice the scent.  I used to grow this plant myself but got rid of it when I learned that it had a potent toxin.

３月末に星タンゴールをダウンサイズした際、全ての小枝を除去しました。

In late March this year, I downsized Hoshi Tangor orange tree, by cutting down the branches and reducing the roots.

最近の恵みの雨を受けて新芽が元気に出ています。栄養を分散させたくないので、

Thanks to the nurturing rain of recent weeks, new branches are coming out.  Since I do not want nutrition to be spread unnecessarily,

将来的に育てたい枝だけ残してスッキリさせました。これをもとに、夏の間にグングン成長するでしょう。

I removed a lot of the new shoots, leaving only those I want to encourage growing in the future.  I am sure these will grow fast during the summer months.

もうひと品種 回復中の「日南の姫」は、順調に葉っぱが増えています。

Another citrus tree on the mend is an early maturing tangerine.  New leaves are growing nicely.

いかにも「生命の危機」を感じたかのような、おびただしい数の蕾の開花が終わって、今は幼果がたくさん着いています。

The countless flower buds have finished blooming and now the plant has countless young fruits.

山椒の実が良い具合に肥大しています。何年も前に30cmほどの小苗を買って、同じ鉢に植えっぱなし。しかも果樹の間に置いてあるので日陰ですが、意外と丈夫です。私は刺激の強いものはダメなので、実のほうはいつも放置です。

The Japanese pepper's fruits are ready for use - they are used while green and soft.  However, the fruits are too spicy for me, so I use only the leaves.
