また雨 Rain again

 昨日の夕方から降り出した雨は、今日の昼過ぎまでジトジト続いていました。よって、今朝の散歩は雨合羽着用です。近所の家の花壇では、もうニオイバンマツリが満開になっていました。

The rain that started yesterday evening lasted until after midday today.  For this morning's walk, Taiga had to put on the raincoat.  In the flower bed of our neighbour's house, the Brunfelsia latifolia was in full bloom already.

咲き始めは濃い紫で、咲き進むにつれ白く変化します。名前のとおり強香を放ちますが、今朝は雨のせいか臭いませんでした。以前、自分でも育てていましたが、神経毒を持っていると知ってからは処分しました。

The flower is in deep purple to start, then the colour turns to white in a few days.  It has a very strong sweet scent normally, but due to the rain this morning, I did not notice the scent.  I used to grow this plant myself but got rid of it when I learned that it had a potent toxin.

３月末に星タンゴールをダウンサイズした際、全ての小枝を除去しました。

In late March this year, I downsized Hoshi Tangor orange tree, by cutting down the branches and reducing the roots.

最近の恵みの雨を受けて新芽が元気に出ています。栄養を分散させたくないので、

Thanks to the nurturing rain of recent weeks, new branches are coming out.  Since I do not want nutrition to be spread unnecessarily,

将来的に育てたい枝だけ残してスッキリさせました。これをもとに、夏の間にグングン成長するでしょう。

I removed a lot of the new shoots, leaving only those I want to encourage growing in the future.  I am sure these will grow fast during the summer months.

もうひと品種 回復中の「日南の姫」は、順調に葉っぱが増えています。

Another citrus tree on the mend is an early maturing tangerine.  New leaves are growing nicely.

いかにも「生命の危機」を感じたかのような、おびただしい数の蕾の開花が終わって、今は幼果がたくさん着いています。

The countless flower buds have finished blooming and now the plant has countless young fruits.

山椒の実が良い具合に肥大しています。何年も前に30cmほどの小苗を買って、同じ鉢に植えっぱなし。しかも果樹の間に置いてあるので日陰ですが、意外と丈夫です。私は刺激の強いものはダメなので、実のほうはいつも放置です。

The Japanese pepper's fruits are ready for use - they are used while green and soft.  However, the fruits are too spicy for me, so I use only the leaves.

オレンジの開花など Orange flowers etc

 地植えの柚子に高接ぎしたセミノールが開花しました。オレンジの花の香りは柑橘類のなかでも最高です。

Seminole orange flowers are open.  These are branches grafted onto the Yuzu tree growing in the ground.  I love the scent of orange flowers more than any other scent of citrus flowers.

セミノールを接いで３年くらい経っているので、白かった接ぎ木テープが真っ黒になって自然に剥がれてきました。

I grafted these branches about 3 years ago, and the grafting tape has turned from white to black and coming off naturally.

こちら↓はブラッドオレンジのモロ。今度どうしようか、今考えあぐねているところ。狭いスペースで木が大きくなってしまったので、手に負えない状態です。他の果樹の採光への影響や、この木の枝ぶりの管理など、迷っています。一つ言えることは、こんな状態でも沢山の実を提供してくれて、冬の間のビタミンＣ摂取に役立ちました。

This is blood orange, Moro.  The tree has grown out of control, and I have not made up my mind what to do with it.  It is growing in a tiny space, and I have to think of other plants getting enough sunlight.  However, even in this sorry state, the tree provided me with a lot of fruits and vitamin C last winter.  I loved looking at the red fruits on the branches during winter when there were no flowers in the garden.

上のほうの枝がこんなに密集状態ですが、高枝ハサミで間引くのが困難になっています。多分、テレビＣＭで見た電動高枝ノコギリが必要な段階。

The branches at the top have become too dense, but I can hardly reach them with my long pruning shears.  Maybe it is time for me to get the electric pruning saw with which I can reach nearly 3 meters (according to the TV commercial).

タイガが、玄関前の座布団ではなく前に出てきて寝そべっています。散歩の催促をしているよう。

Taiga was lying on the ground, instead of the cushion in front of the door.  I think she was asking for a walk.

ということで、午後の散歩に出ました。今日は城北公園とは反対方向に川沿いを歩きました。

So, we left for an afternoon walk.  This time, we walked along the Shakujii River in the opposite direction to the usual Johoku Park.

２日前の大雨の日は水位がかなり上昇して急流の勢いでしたが、今日はいつもの水準。上から見下ろした印象では水深が20cmも無いのでは、と思うほど浅いです。

Two days ago, we had heavy rain all day, and the water level was really high.  Now, it is the usual, shallow depth of probably less than 20 cm.

洪水のような流れのあとは、まるで川底を掃除したかのように水草さえ無くなっていました。そういえば、この川で魚が泳いでいるのを見たことありません。

After the flood-like flow of 2 days ago, the riverbed was clean as if someone had scraped it, leaving no weeds.  Come to think of it, I have never seen any fish in this stretch of river - too clean for fish to live.

高稲荷神社のふもとにある公園ではノイバラの株が満開でした。昔懐かしい山野草ですが、わざわざ公園に植えてあるのは珍しい。
In the park we passed by, there was a bush of Japanese wild rose in full bloom.  Growing up in the countryside, I used to see this plant in fields and woodlands.  The plant is very tough, and it is used in grafting as the root stock for cultivated rooses in Japan.

しかも大株に育って、１株だけでも存在感があります。

I have never seen such a large bush - in the wild, they are scruffy plants.

近くで見るとけっこう綺麗な花です。

Close up, the blossoms are quite pretty.  They attract honeybees in the wild.

あまり行かない方角の住宅街を歩いていたら、去年の秋に一度だけ会ったワンコと全く同じ場所で会えました。最初、飼い主同士は確信がなかったのですが、ワンコたちはすぐに分かってお互い勢いよく挨拶に近づきました。

When we were walking in a residential area we rarely pass, we saw a dog that we had met once last year.  At first, the humans were not sure, but the dogs recognised each other straightaway and started pulling.  

ポメラニアンミックスの女の子で、ディアリーちゃん、今度の５月８日で４歳になるそうで、12歳になったばかりのタイガとは8歳違いです。

She is a Pomeranian mix, named 'Deary', who was adopted and came with the name.  The owner did not know the meaning in English so, when I explained it to her, she was very pleased.

散歩から帰って満足顔のタイガ。タヌキみたいな顔です。

Back from walk, Taiga was tired but very satisfied.  Her face looks like a racoon's.

柚子など Yuzu etc

 先日いただいた柚子の全部を使ってマーマレードを作りました。20cmルクルーゼ鍋でちょうど加工しやすい量。種は別の鍋で煮て、最大限ペクチンを抽出。甘皮は捨て、外皮を細くスライスし、ひたひたの水で十分柔らかくなるまで煮たら、あらかじめ計っておいた外皮と果汁の合計重量に対して70%の砂糖を加えて煮る。適当なところで、濾したペクチン及び果汁を加えて、ドロっとするまで更に煮ます。空きビンが１個しかなかったので、直ぐに食べる分はコップを利用しました。この寒い季節なら冷蔵庫で腐りません。

I made marmalade with the Yuzu fruits given to me while walking a few days ago.  The 20cm Le Creuset pot was just the right size for the job.  I separated the stones and cooked in another pot in order to extract the natural pectin.  I threw away the inner skin, then sliced the outer skin to cook in water.  I had weighed the total of the juice and the outer skin, so that I could use sugar equivalent to 70% of the fruits.  When the skin was really soft, I added the sugar and cooked some more.  Finally, I added the pectin and the juice of the fruits, then cooked further until the mixture got thick enough to stick to the underside of a wooden spoon.

I had only one empty jar, so I had to use glasses for the remainder which will be eaten immediately.  In this cold weather, it will keep well in the fridge.

完全に冷えるとペクチンの作用で汁がゼリーっぽい。パンに漬けて食べると、柚子の風味が最高でした。

When it was completely cold, the liquid was like a jelly.  It had a wonderful taste and flavour when I ate it with bread.

うちの本柚子はというと、今年はたったの1個だけ。地植えの柚子を中間台にしてオレンジを接いであるので、将来 木が充実しても柚子は木の下の部分にしか生らない構造です。

As to my own Yuzu, there is only one fruit this year.  Actually, the Yuzu tree is used like a root stock for oranges.  So, even when the tree grows tall in the future, there will be Yuzu fruits only at the lower parts of the tree.

21日の冬至の日に採って、いろいろな料理に使う予定です。

The winter solstice is related to Yuzu.  They say that if you take a bath with Yuzu fruits, you will not catch a cold during that winter.  Since I have only one fruit, I will use it for cooking on that day.

これは通路で柚子とは反対側に植えてあるブラッドオレンジのモロの木。今年の始めに鬼剪定したので枝数が少ないです。幼い木でそこまで剪定すると、その年は実が生らないかもしれませんが、この木は充実しているので、そこそこ生りました。

Near the Yuzu tree, this is blood orange, Moro.  Since the tree got overwhelmingly large, I trimmed it drastically at the start of this year.  If you do that on a younger tree, you may not see any fruits that year, but this tree is mature. 

まだまだ色づいていませんが、冬の間、眺めていると目の保養にもなります。

The fruits will become dark red on the outside over the next two months.

ブラッドオレンジの根元近く、下の段でスモモ苗が植わっているところへタイガが侵入してきました。

As I was looking at the blood oranges, Taiga crept into the spot at the bottom of the tree.

声を出して何かを要求するようなワンコではないので、こうやってそろ～りと移動して、私の視線の先で注意を引こうとします。

She never utters a voice to make her demands known.  Instead, she moves silently to the spot where she might catch my eyes.

何ともジミなワンコ。

Her quiet ways make me laugh.

接ぎ木など Grafting etc

 昨日届いたナツメ苗は、たっぷり水やりしたあと袋がけにしました。今度の週末は更に寒くなるという予報なので、過保護気味の扱い。来年の春の芽吹きが楽しみです。今度こそ。

After planting the jujube trees in pots yesterday, I heard the weather forecast saying that this coming weekend would be even colder than so far.  It is already freezing now.  So, I covered the plants in plastic bags to be safe.  I am not taking any chances after so many disappointments with rotten jujube plants sent to me.

ご近所のアルプス乙女の枝を早々といただけました。私の中では来年の１-２月頃を想定していたのですが、手に入ったからには枝が新鮮なうちに接ぐことにしました。バラ科の枝の保存で過去に冷蔵庫と地中深くに埋めておく方法を試したことがありますが、どちらも枝の活力が失われてしまっていました。

接いだのは「紅の夢」に。グラニースミスには開花時期がほぼ同じの紅玉が接いであります。今年の初開花では紅の夢はその２品種に遅れて咲きましたが、アルプス乙女となら開花が合っていました。ただし、木が充実して将来 花数が増えれば、開花時期の重なりが期待できます。

My neighbour gave me a branch from her crab apple tree.  It is a Japanese variety called Alps Otome, and its pollen is said to be compatible with any commercial cultivars.  Indeed, my red-flesh apple tree produced a fruit from the pollen of that variety this year. 

I was thinking of getting a scion during Jan-Feb next year but, since it was here, I decided to graft it right away.  In the past, I have tried the methods of preserving scions in the fridge or buried deep in the ground but, by the time I came to use them, they had lost their vitality.

接いだ場所は２本の枝がくっついていて、片方を剪定する予定だった箇所。アルプスが活着すれば横の紅の夢の枝を来年の初夏に除去する予定。

I grafted the scion on one of the two branches growing close to each other.  I was going to prune one of them during this winter but, if the graft goes well, I can afford to get rid of the other branch in summer next year.

リンゴ苗はいずれも幼苗で枝数が少ないので、１ヵ所ずつしか高接ぎできません。でも、頂いた枝が長くて余裕があったので、余った部分を試しにスモモの李王に接いでみました。この李王の枝も剪定予定の箇所でした。バラ科どうしとは言え、活着するかどうか予想もつきません。

Since the apple tree is still young and does not have many branches, I can spare only one branch for grafting.  However, the scion given to me was long and I had some left, so I grafted the leftover onto a plum tree as an experiment.  Both apple trees and plum trees belong to the rose family, and I am curious to see if the graft will be viable.

今年の夏に、星タンゴールの枝を地植えのカラカラオレンジに接いで活着したのがこれです。葉っぱの状態は、鉢植えの親木のよりも健康そうなので良かったです。

The Hoshi Tangor scion that I grafted onto Caracara orange in summer this year has been growing well.  The leaves of this scion look a lot healthier than those of the potted parent tree, so I am pleased with the result.

私があちこち移動するたびに影のようについて回るタイガ。視線を合わせずそうっと関心を引こうとするところが笑えます。YouTubeで見る他所のワンコたちは洋犬も和犬も自己主張が強いので面白いですが、タイガは渋いです。

As I was moving about looking at plants, Taiga followed me in silence like a shadow.  I know that she does this to catch my attention, but she does not even look me in the eye.  Those dogs I see on YouTube are a lot more forthcoming, be they Japanese or Western breeds, but Taiga is utterly restrained.

レモン等 Lemon etc

 二階のバルコニーに置いてあるリスボンレモン（左）と星タンゴールに（右）、それぞれ２個ずつ実が生っています。星タンゴールにとってうちのバルコニーの夏は暑すぎるらしく、７月には樹勢が弱って枯れそうになるほどです。なので10月下旬までは部屋の中でガラス戸ごしに光りをとっていました。この苗は植え替えなしの鉢植えで何年も経つので、根っこが弱いのかもしれません。今年の夏に地植えのカラカラオレンジに高接ぎしたのが奇跡的に活着したので、そちらの方に期待です。なぜ奇跡的かというと、私は元々接ぎ木が下手なところへ、この弱った苗には丸枝がほとんど無いからです。それでも何とか数回目でうまくいきました。

On the upstairs balcony, Lisbon lemon (left) and Hoshi Tangor (right) each has two fruits growing.  For Hoshi Tangor, the balcony gets too hot during summer and leaves turn almost yellow.  So, the plant was kept inside the glass doors until late October.  This plant has never been re-potted since I got it many years ago, and the roots are probably in a weakened state.  Luckly, I successfully grafted a scion onto the Caracara orange tree growing in the ground during summer this year.  It took me several times to get it right, since this plant had hardly any round branches - this is probably due to the plant being unhealthy.

リスボンレモンは今年の春におびただしい数の幼果が着いたあと、結局は２個だけが生き残りました。苗の負担を減らすために何度も自分で間引きしましたが、苗は自分で判断したようで、来年からは放置です。でも２個しかない分、非常に大実です。

Lisbon lemon had countless young fruits in spring, but in the end only two of them survived.  I was so worried that too many young fruits might weaken the plant, so I picked many of them.  After all, the plant knew how many fruits it could support.  So, I am going to do nothing from next year.  Still, having only two fruits means that they are huge.

星タンゴールは現在、レモンの実と同じくらいの大きさですが、この品種の収穫期は翌年の４月頃なので、いつもゆっくりと実が肥大を続けます。とても上品な美味しさなのに、この品種が普及していないのが不思議です。

Hoshi Tangor's fruits are about the same size as those of the Lisbon lemon.  However, the harvesting time is April of the following year, and the fruits continue to grow slowly during the winter months.  This variety has a very delicate and beautiful taste.  I cannot understand why it is not distributed in shops.

ナツメの皇帝は、葉っぱも一年限りの枝も落ちて、今は恒常的な枝だけになりました。葉がなくなると、トゲ無しなのが分かり易いです。皇帝という品種がトゲ無しなのか、この個体の性質なのか分かりませんが、トゲ無しは世話しやすいです。

The Emperor jujube has lost all the leaves and non-permanent branches.  Without them, it is easy to see that this tree is thornless.  Since there is little information on the internet, I do not know whether this variety is thornless, or if it is just this particular tree.  Whichever is the case, it is easier to look after the plant without thorns.

散歩から帰って、ホットカーペットの上でお昼ご飯を寝て待つタイガ。本人は玄関外に座っているほうが好みのようですが、ここ２,３日の寒さの中でも外に出しておくのは道行く人に誤解されそうで控えています。
