公園で At the park

 夕方散歩で城北中央公園へ行きました。土手のように少し盛り上がっているところに座り込んでリラックス。この土手からは、以前は東京スカイツリーが遥かに見えていましたが、現在、石神井川の対岸は地下洪水調整池の建設中で白い壁のよなものが建っていて視界を遮っています。

We went to the Johoku Central Park for our evening walk.  We sat down on the small bank and relaxed.  From this bank, we used to be able to see the Tokyo Sky Tree in the distance.  Now, there is a huge white wall blocking the view.  The wall is there for the construction site on the other side of the Shakujii River, where they are building an underground flood water adjustment reservoir.

As we sat, walkers and joggers passed by on the path in front of us.

場所を移動。タイガは今年で13歳。元気に公園まで来れるうちに沢山の写真を撮っておきたいので、いろんな背景を利用。

We moved to another field.  Taiga is 13 years old now and, while she is able to come to this park on foot, I want to take lots of pictures with different background.

更に別の草地で休んでいると、カンタがやって来ました。

We moved to yet another field, where we saw Kanta.

カンタの飼い主さんと私たちが座り込むと、カンタはいつものように少し離れたところを選びます。雰囲気が渋い。何度も名前を呼んで、やっとこちらを振り向きました。

When we all sat down, Kanta took place a little apart from us, as usual.  It is as if to say 'you chattering women'.  I kept calling his name and he turned his head around at last.

そこへ、夕方散歩で最近見かけるようになったポメラニアンの子がやってきました。生後８か月の「くろ丸」君。小柄のポメですが、怖いもの知らずの性格。しかも、人間や他のワンコの心境を操作する技を備えているよう。カンタの目の前でしつこく飼い主さんに甘えていました。

There came a Pomeranian that we started seeing from time to time during our evening walks.  He is 8 months old, named 'Kuromaru'.  He is a tiny Pomeranian but with a bold heart.  Moreover, he seems to know how to manipulate others, including humans and dogs.  He kept snuggling up to Kanta's mom, all the time with challenging eyes directed at Kanta.

くろ丸君の飼い主さんによると、家ではこの小さな体の中に天使と悪魔がともに存在するような振る舞いだそうです。

According to Kuromaru's dad, his behaviour at home makes you think that both an angel and a devil reside in this tiny body.

くろ丸君はオヤツというものを未だ食べたことがないそうなので（飼い主さんご夫婦に尊敬の念！しかも、ご飯はトッピング無しのドライフードに徹しているそう。うちなんて、ドライフードがトッピングですわ）、くろまる君がいなくなってからオヤツタイム。タイガの目が必死です。

Even more surprising, Kuromaru has never had a 'treat' yet in his life.  Further, his meals strictly consist of dried dog food.  My greatest respect to his owners!  So, we pulled out the treat only after Kuromaru had left us.  Taiga's desperate eyes.

ブルーベリー苗 Blueberry plants

 朝散歩で公園からの帰り道、地蔵さんの前を通りました。

On our way home from the Johoku Park, we passed by the jizo-san statues.

通るたびに新鮮な花が供えられています。

Every time we walk by, I see fresh flowers.

今朝の花は梅雨の花のアジサイ「墨田の花火」という品種だと思います。

This morning, the flowers were mainly hydrangea.  This one is a variety called 'Sumida no Hanabi' - which evokes the image of a firework flower just opening.

お地蔵さんとは細い道を挟んだ向こうにある屋敷林に映えている株からでしょう。

城北公園は都立の公園であるのに対し、この屋敷林は元は野菜畑だったものが一般に開放されている緑地で、練馬区の管理下にあります。草刈り作業が行われるのは年に数回だけなので、今は夏草がボウボウ。小学生が登校途中にショートカットで通る、獣道のような筋がついています。

The woodland is currently overgrown with weeds.  Whereas Johoku Park is managed by Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this woodland comes under Nerima Ward.  This place used to be a farmland but now made available for the general public.  Elementary school children go through this field as a shortcut on their way to and from school, leaving a narrow trail.

屋敷林の一角には野良桑の大木が２本あります。

There are two wild mulberry trees which must have been here for ages.

見たこと無いような極小の実が生っている。

タイガはサラダバーに夢中。

実の形はフトモモ科のフルーツを連想させます。

The fruit looks like something out of the Myrtaceae family, like a guava fruit.

今日は過ごしやすい気温だったので、近所のJAを覗いてみました。そこでつい誘惑に負けたのが、これらのブルーベリー苗。ブルーベリーは過去に何度か挫折しているので、もう手を出さないと決めていたのですが、大粒の実が生っているのと値段がまた魅力的でした（税込みで1,070円）。左から、「クーパー」と「ビロキシー」。いずれも初めて聞く名前です。

Today was just the right temperature to spend outside, so I visited the JA nearby where I saw these blueberry plants and could not resist.  Now, I have tried and failed growing blueberries a few times in the past, which made me determined never to try again.  However, the berries on these plants were so large and inviting.  The price was also attractive (1,070 yen each, inclusive of tax).  So, from left to right, 'Cooper' and 'Biloxi'.  Both names are new to me, since I have been out of blueberries for so long.

サザン系の中で「最大級」と聞くと、期待してしまいました。

It says 'One of the largest varieties among Southern Highbush blueberries - I like the sound of it.

こちらはビロキシー。

This is Biloxi.

今のところ、実の大きさはこちらのほうが上です。

Currently, the berries of this variety are larger than those of Cooper.

素焼き鉢に植えつけました。元の鉢が小さかったので、当分これで大丈夫だと思います。来年の３月に植え替えする予定です。
For now, I am using these clay pots which are large enough for the root system of both plants.  I plan to repot them in larger containers in March next year.

公園で At the park

 夕方散歩で四中横の草地に着くと、ちょうどカンタも来たところでした。涼しい風が吹いて心地よかったので、一緒に草地を見渡せる築山で座り込みました。カンタは昔から人やワンコにデレデレするタイプではなかったので、おじさんになった今は更に周りとは一線を引いた態度です。

When we arrived at the park, Kanta had also just entered the field.  Taking advantage of the pleasant cool breeze, we sat down on a mound from where we could see the whole of the field.  Kanta sitting a little apart from us, he looks like a solitary old man.  He has never been cuddly either with people or other dogs - the very image of a stoic Kaiken.

私がしつこく名前を呼ぶと、やっとこちらをチラ見。

However, I am not the one to leave him alone, and he turned around momentarily when I called his name.

タイガはカンタの飼い主さんに「撫でて」を要求しています。

再度 私がカンタを呼んでこちらを振り向かせました。

Again, I called Kanta to turn around, and he obliged.

懐かしい顔が登場。超ミニ柴のすずちゃんが興奮して走って来たので、カンタが脅しの「ウオッ！」とともに飛び出しました。これは決して威嚇ではなく、カンタ流の挨拶です。タイガと顔を合わせた瞬間でさえ、毎回唸る習慣がついています。そして私が叱る。

An old friend running towards us with excitement - a female Shiba Inu, Suzu, with the size of a Chihuahua, whom we seldom see after Covid.  Kanta dashed out with a big bark.  However, it is not a threat, but his way of greeting any pooch.  Even when he sees Taiga, he always growls and I scold him - this is our ritual.

Taiga was also excited to see Suzu after a long time.

すずちゃんは「豆柴」の小ささを通り越した極小柴です。10年前、静岡県の有名な犬舎から来ました。その体格にも拘わらず、ありとあらゆるサイズのワンコたちと毎夕方走り回って遊んで育ちました。本人のすずちゃんは天真爛漫な性格で怖い者知らずでしたが、あまりに小さいので、私たち他の飼い主はアクシデントが起きないよう、常にすずちゃんの位置を意識していました。

Suzu is a micro Shiba Inu - far smaller than a miniature Shiba Inu.  10 years ago, she came from a famous kennel in Shizuoka Prefecture which established the concept of micro Shiba Inu.  In spite of her size, she used to play every day with all sizes of dogs.  She was a happy and fearless puppy, but other dog owners were constantly on alert lest an accident should happen.  Miraculously, she was unharmed through the years.
