ゴールドフィグ Golden Fig

 今年の４月に買ったゴールドフィグは、このように節の間が詰まった樹姿でした。

This is the golden fig plant that I bought in April this year.  It had a compact growth habit with short distances between nodes.

それが今もこのように寸詰まりのままです。スペース難のうちでは、できればコンパクトに維持できる果樹が理想なので、これは嬉しいことです。実生りも良くて、初年度から収穫できています。８月上旬に一部が熟したあと一旦休止していたのが、最近の乾燥した暖かい気候が合っているのか、また動きが見えてきました。苗の３か所に幼果が集中しています。

This is how it looks today, still with short distances between branches.  Since I am desperately short of space in my garden, a fruit tree with such a compact growth habit is most welcome.  Moreover, this tree is prolific, producing young fruits in its initial year of growth.  Some of the young fruits matured in early August, before the long rainy period that followed.  We have enjoyed a dry and sunny spell recently, and some of the young fruits have started to mature.  There are 3 branches with young fruits, as below.

これはＡの枝。実の口は開いていないけど、触るとポタポタです。この苗の実は赤実でないからか、野鳥の被害にあったことはありません。

This is branch A.  The 'mouth' of the fruit is closed, but when I touch the fruit, it is soft like a water balloon.  Since the fruits do not turn red, it seems that wild birds have not discovered this tree yet.

これはＢの枝。実はボケボケに写っていますが、柔らかいです。

This is branch B.  Although not a clear picture, it feels soft enough when I touch it.

これはＣの枝。まだまだ硬いです。

This is branch C - a long way to go yet.

糖度計のサイズとの比較で想像つくと思いますが、実が小粒の品種です。

Ａの実は糖度22.0度。とっても美味しいジャム状態でした。ここまで熟しても口が開かないのは虫の侵入を防げて嬉しいです。

Comparing the relative sizes against that of the Brix meter, you can see how tiny the fruits are.  The one on the left is from branch A.  Its sugar content, according to the gadget, was 22.0%, and it tasted like a very sweet jam.  Since the mouth of the fruit stayed closed, I found no insects inside.

Ｂの実は糖度19.1度。Ａを食べた後ではさすがにマイルドな味に思えてしまいました。でも、スモモで18度を宣伝している品種があることを思うと、19.1度でも悪くないのでは。

The fruit B's sugar content was 19.1%.  After tasting fruit A, fruit B tasted somewhat mild.  However, considering that some plum varieties are proudly advertised for their sugar content of 18%, this fruit B's sweetness is nothing to be ashamed of.

朝散歩 Morning walk

今朝は早朝から良く晴れて、またしても秋らしい清々しい天気でした。公園へ向かう石神井川沿いの歩道を歩いていたら、植樹帯に一株だけあるクコの株に花が咲き始めているのに気づきました。 

The typhoons No. 28 and 29 were thought to be heading towards Honshu until a few days ago but now seem steering away from us.  So, we had a clear sky starting early today.  Along the Shakujii River, there is a tree planting zone, and I noticed this morning that flower buds of a goji berry bush were starting to open.

この場所は、早朝は歩道横の建物の陰に入りますが、基本的に陽当たり良好、おまけに川風が吹くので通気性バツグンです。ただ、普通の花壇とは異なり土はカツカツです。それでも時々、草木がこっそり植え付けられて遺棄されているのを見かけます。このクコの草姿からして、子供の頃に見た野生のクコとは似ていないので、たぶん園芸種だと思います。

This walkway is in the shade of nearby buildings in very early morning, but otherwise it gets a lot of sun throughout the day.  Also, being on the riverbank, it gets breezes coming up from the river.  However, unlike a normal flower bed, the quality of soil in the tree planting zone is poor and hard.  Even so, I have noticed plants having been quietly put in the ground (abandoned) - perhaps the owner got bored with it or had to move away but could not take it with him/her.  This goji berry bush might be one of such plants, since judging by the appearance of the plant, it does not look like the wild goji berry that I used to see when I was a child living at the foot of a mountain.

花も葉っぱも大きくしっかりしていて、うちの「静浜クコ」より遥かに立派です。蕾が沢山ついているので、まだまだ開花を眺められそう。

These flowers and leaves are large and sturdy, unlike my named variety that I bought this summer.  The bush has a lot of flower buds, so I will be able to watch the flowers for some time.

石神井川沿いの歩道は主にソメイヨシノの並木道ですが、ここは例外的にハナミズキが植わってます。

Somei Yoshino cherry trees line the bank of the Shakujii River, with the exception of this section where flowering dogwood trees stand.  

ハナミズキの実が真っ赤に色づいて目を引きますが、このあと葉っぱが紅葉するので、２度楽しめます。

The berries have turned red and they are eye-catching.  After the berries are gone, we will be able to enjoy the red leaves when the weather turns colder.  Thus, we can enjoy these flowering dogwood trees twice in an autumn.

いつもの草地。２箇所ある築山のうち、西洋トチノキが植わっているこちらの方がタイガのオヤツスポットになっています。

We arrived at the familiar field.  Of the two mounds in this field, we come to this one where a horse chestnut tree stands, for Taiga's treat.

西洋トチノキはすっかり葉を落としてしまいました。

The horse chestnut tree has lost all its leaves.

最近、この築山のベンチが新調されて清潔感があります。

They recently replaced the crumbling old benches with new ones. They now look clean and tidy.

タイガは座り込んで「オヤツ」。

Taiga reminding me of her treat time.

先日、甲斐犬ヒナ・セナの飼い主さんからいただいた手作り名札です。道で初めて会う人には口頭でタイガの名前を伝えたあと、この名札を見せて漢字も披露しています。

The handmade name plate given by Hina/Sena's dad a few days ago looks really nice on Taiga.  When I meet someone for the first time while walking, I verbally tell Taiga's name and then show this plate.

日本ナツメなど Japanese jujube etc

この苗は、2024年夏に日本ナツメの大苗を買ったあと、その秋に出てきたヒコバエを鉢上げしたものです。高さ60cmくらいのところで摘心しましたが、去年・今年と樹高は基本的に同じです。 上に伸びられないので、毎年 一年限りの結果枝がたくさん出てきて、しだれた樹姿になります。

今年は夏の長雨で、実が小さいうちの落果が多かったですが、ここ２，３日の晴天で色づいてきました。

This jujube plant was one of the suckers that appeared a few months after I got the Japanese jujube tree in summer 2024.  In winter that year, I cut the trunk at about 60 cm high, and the tree's height has remained the same ever since.  As it was stunted upwards, the tree produces a lot of little limbs with fruits, with the result that the tree looks weeping.

This year, a lot of young fruits dropped off the tree due to the long rainy months caused by passing typhoons.  The weather has been dry and warm for the last few days, and the fruits started to turn red at last.

ほぼ全部収穫しました。実は小さいけど、甘酸っぱくて美味しいです。

I picked most of the fruits.  These fruits are tiny, but they are delicious with sweet and sour taste.

その日本ナツメの横に置いてある大雪棗は、この１個に赤味がさしてきました。この品種は晩成なので収穫はまだまだ先のことです。

Standing next to the Japanese jujube is this Big Snow Jujube.  One of the young fruits seems to be turning red.  This variety is late ripening, so real harvesting is away weeks in the future.

７月中旬の開花からこの２個だけが着果して、現在着いている他の幼果は全て８月の開花からのものです。実のサイズはこの２個が最大です。

From the first flowering in mid-July this year, these two were the only fruit setting.  All the other young fruits are from August flowering.  These two fruits stand out in size.

ただし実の形は多少いびつで、カタログ写真のリンゴ型ではありません。これら２個は少し扁平で、むしろ蟠棗のような形をしています。蟠棗は梨棗の枝替わりで、あの扁平な形を固定させたものですが、他に冬棗の枝替わりから油蟠脆棗も開発されていて、こちらは更に極端な扁平です。もしかしたら、この大雪棗からも平べったい品種が生まれる可能性があるのでは？

However, the shapes of these two fruits do not conform to the catalogue picture which shows apple-like fruits.  Instead, these are looking a little flat, rather like the fruits of Panzao.  Now, the Panzao was developed from a bud mutation found on Li Jujube.  Likewise, Yupancui was developed from a bud mutation found on Winter Jujube.  The shape of Yupancui is even flatter than that of Panzao.  

Looking at these two young fruits, it might be able to develop a flat fruit variety from the Big Snow Jujube, too.

公園で At the park

今朝はこのシーズン初めての秋らしい乾燥した清々しい朝でした。公園に着くとタイガは早速

It was a cool and dry morning with perfect blue sky - what we normally regard as a typical autumnal morning in Japan.  New typhoons are expected to approach the mainland but, for now, the weather is fine.

いつもの草風呂。刈られた草が固く乾燥してブラシのような感覚が良いのか、嬉しそうにスリゴロしていました。

As soon as we arrived at the nearest field, Taiga started rolling over the grass.  They cut the grass recently, and Taiga enjoyed the feel of the hardened leftover dry grass.

公園内を川沿いに歩いていると、なつかしい顔がやって来ました。私が勝手に「えりまき貴婦人」と呼んでいるジャックラッセルの女の子、こむぎちゃん、現在６歳です。

As we were walking along the Shakujii River that runs through the Johoku Park, we met a familiar face.  I call her 'The Lady with A Fur Shawl'.  She is a Jack Russell named Komugi, now aged 6.

コロナを境にいろんな子たちと会えなくなってしまいましたが、こむぎちゃんと最後に会ったのは思い出せないくらい前です。でも、ワンコ同士は覚えているので嬉しそうです。

After the Covid scare, many dog owners started to walk at different times of the day, instead of meeting up during regular time zones.  As a result, I cannot remember when we last met.  However, the pooches recognised each other right away.  

えりまき貴婦人の由来は、こむぎちゃんの肩、背中、胸を長い毛が覆っていることからです。まるで重い毛皮のショールをしょっているかのように見えます。

This↓ is why I call her 'The Lady with A Fur Shawl'.  The base of her head is covered with longer fur, while she is basically a smooth coated Jack Russell.  It looks as though her little body is shouldering a heavy fur shawl.

いつも笑ってしまうのは、こむぎちゃんは嬉しいと背中を丸めてお尻を地面にこすりつけるようにして歩き回ることです。こうやってクルクル私たちの周りを歩き回っていました。

Komugi has a quirky way of showing happiness.  When she meets her favourite persons/pooches, she starts circling around her friends with her back stooping and dragging her rear end on the ground.

さらに歩いていると、ヒナとセナがやってきました。年長のヒナは黒虎、セナは甲斐犬に稀に生まれるクリーム色の子です。

After parting with Komugi, we met our Kaiken friends, Hina (black brindle) and Sena (cream coloured).

ヒナは子犬で公園デビューした頃、４歳のタイガと毎日一緒に遊んでいたので今もお互いを見つけると急ぎ足になります。跡から迎えられたセナはタイガとは世代が離れていて、一緒に遊んだ経験がないのでクールです。

When Hina started coming to the park as a puppy, she played with Taiga, then 4 years old, every afternoon, so they rush to greet each other even now.  However, when Sena joined her family, Taiga was too old for her, and she made friends with others of her own age.

たいてい、こうやって一歩引いてヒナとタイがの再会を眺めるだけ。

So, Sena usually stands back like this and watches her sister and Taiga.

セナがヒナに「何やってんの？」と近づいてきました。

その隙にタイガがヒナの臭いチェック。

Taiga saw the chance to take a sniff at Hina.

ヒナ・セナの飼い主さんからのいただきもの。タイガの名札です。あまりに良くできているので、私はてっきり神社で売られているお守りのようなものかと思いましたが、何と、飼い主さんの手作りだそうです。着色された漆絵具が売られているそうで、この小さな木の板に絵や文字を書くのだそうです。

表面は、タイガの血統書に載っている正式な名前。

Their dad gave me a surprise present - a little wooden tablet with Taiga's name painted on it.  It was so well made that I thought it was a sort of amulet that they sell at shrines or temples.  In fact, it was handmade by Hina/Sena's dad, using coloured lacquer paints.

On one side of the tablet, there is Taiga's formal name as appears on her pedigree certificate.

裏面はタイガのシルエット。タイガは赤虎なので、ちゃんと赤いワンコになっています。また、タイガは甲斐犬に典型的な差し尾なので、よーく特徴が表現されています。

On the other side, Taiga's silhouette.  Since Taiga is a red brindle, the silhouette is dark red.  Also, it shows Taiga's tail bending forward, which is very typical of a Kaiken.  I am thrilled with this present.

さっそく着けてみました。材質の木製というところが甲斐犬の渋い雰囲気に合って、なかなか似合っています。

I put it on her when we were alone.  The wooden material gives it a very simple air which is suitable to Kaiken's image.  I think the name tag looks great on her.

センニチコウの花をお茶にするとポリフェノールを摂取できると聞いて、今年の夏に一株買いました。小学校の花壇で咲いていた記憶はあるけど、ジミな花なので今まで全く注目していませんでしたが、健康オタクになっていろんなハーブを試しているうちにセンニチコウにも当たったのです。

本当に名前のとおりいつまでも咲いています。百日草のジニアの花より更に長持ちする印象。嬉しいのは、花がなかなか劣化しないので、収穫を急ぐ必要がないことです。。

I got this pot of globe amaranth in early summer, having learned that the flowers were rich in polyphenol when used as tea.  I remember seeing these flowers in the flower bed when I was an elementary school girl, but I have never taken much interest in them because they were so plain.  However, as a health fanatic now, I regard this as one of the easiest-to-grow and beneficial herbs.  

True to the name in Japanese which means 'thousand days red flower', they do not wilt.  They seem to last much longer than zinnia flowers, which in Japanese means 'hundred days flower'.  Since the flowers stay fresh for weeks, if not months, I do not have to worry about the timing of harvest.

左は今朝摘んだ新鮮な花、右は夏の間に乾燥させて保存したもの。両方を同時に試飲して、来年以降の利用法を決めます。

On the left, the fresh flowers I picked this morning, and on the right, the flowers I dried a few months ago.  I am going to taste both so as to compare and decide which I prefer.

新鮮なほうは熱湯を注いで成分を抽出するので、花びらをほぐしました。右の乾燥花は煮だします。

The fresh flowers will be steeped in boiled water, so I pulled them off from the core.  The dried flowers will be boiled.

左の生の花びらは、熱湯を注いだあとフタをして数分間蒸らしました。右の乾燥花は数分間煎じたもの。

After pouring boiled water over the petals on the left, I left it under a cover for several minutes.  As to the dried flowers, I boiled them for several minutes.

いずれも茶こしを通してカップに注ぐと綺麗な赤系の色になりました。左が生の花から、右が乾燥した花からのもの。味見をするとあまり特徴が感じられないので、自家栽培の種無しスダチの汁を小さじ１杯加えることにしました。

After straining the liquid into cups, they tuned into lovely colours.  The pink one on the left is from fresh flowers, while the other is from dried flowers.  When I tasted them, it was rather bland, so I decided to add juice from my Seedless Sudachi that I harvested recently - one tea spoonful each.

柑橘果汁が加わってアクセントのある飲み物になりましたが、さらに砂糖小さじ１杯を足したらとても美味しくなりました。違いを上げるなら、右の乾燥花のは若干 干し草っぽい香りがありますが、これは乾燥ハーブにつきものです。

園芸店でいろんな種類のセンニチコウを見比べたところ、この赤紫の昔ながらの品種がもっとも枝の分岐が良さそうなので、来年からこれを中心に育てます。ただし、もう一品種をと思い、「クイズカーマイン」の種を既にネットで注文してあります。

With the citrus juice, the tea improved somewhat.  However, when I added a tea spoonful of sugar, it became really delicious.  They both tasted similar, but with the dried flowers, there was a hint of dry hay, which is unavoidable with dried herbs.

Having compared different varieties of this family, I like this purple variety best for its tendency to branch out.  I will be adding another variety to grow next year, QIS Carmine, whose seeds I have already ordered online.
