ドルゴクラブアップル Dolgo crabapple tree

 普通のリンゴは毎年夏に葉ダニがついて大変だったので諦めました。葉ダニで木全体の葉っぱが銀色になると光合成ができないので、幼果は成長がストップしてしまいます。リンゴが熟すのは10-11月なので、これでは絶対的にムリ。対して、知り合いの梅の木の場合、梅は６月で収穫してしまうので、その後で葉ダニが発生して毎夏に銀色の葉になるけど実への実害は無いようです。

それならなるべく早生のリンゴの品種であれば大丈夫かもしれませんが、本物のリンゴの場合、暖地ではとにかく虫がつきやすい。ということで、カイドウのように丈夫なクラブアップルに興味を持ちました。そこで調べてみたら、８月に収穫できる「ドルゴ」という品種に行きつきました。検索していて安い苗がオクに出ていることを知り、その業者がちょうどサマーセールを行っていたので落札しました。

I have given up growing regular apples due to recurring spider mites' damages.  When the leaves turn silver, photosynthesis is severely limited and the young fruits stop growing.  Since apples normally mature in October-November, continued growth for the fruits was impossible.  Interestingly, my friend's Ume tree also gets spider mites in summer but, due to the fact that Ume plums are harvested before the end of June, her Ume production is virtually unaffected.

In that case, an early fruiting apple variety may be an idea.  However, in a hot climate that we have in Tokyo, spider mites are just one of many problems.  So, I became interested in crabapples that are as tough as flowering crabapples and came across 'Dolgo'.  I also noticed that an online plant shop was having a summer sale on the Yahoo auction site and managed to get one.

米国の動画を見ると、ドルゴはクラブの中でも大き目の実がなり、しかも酸っぱいもの好きな人なら生食もできるそうです。私はたぶんジャムやコンポートに利用すると思います。

ドルゴはカザフスタンの原産で、ロシア経由で北米に導入されたそうで、ロシア語で「ドルゴ」は「長い」という意味だそうです。YouTubeの動画の一つには本当に細長い実が紹介されているのがありますが、他の動画の実はまん丸の実だったので、個体差があるようです。

According to US videos on YouTube, Dolgo produces fruits of a good size for a crabapple, and you can eat the fruits as fresh if you can tolerate tart fruits.  In my case, I will be using the fruits for making jam and comports.  Dolgo originates from Kazakhstan and was introduced to North American via Russia, thus the word 'Dolgo' meaning 'long' in Russian.  One of the videos showed elongated fruits, but most others were very round shaped.  So, there seems to be variation among 'Dolgo'.

The plant has a thick trunk and seems to be robust.

10号鉢に植え付け。土が粘土の塊だったので根洗いして植え付けしました。真夏にこんな荒いことをした後、暫くは半日陰に置きます。

I replanted it in a 30 cm diameter pot.  The soil around the roots was hard clay, so I washed it off, although it is a risky thing to do in the middle of summer.  After such a rough treatment, the plant will stay in half shade for some time.

The young fruits are growing every day, and it is such a pity to have them spoiled by beetles.  So, I decided to forget about 'appearances'.

防虫ネットを購入して網掛けしました。道から丸見えです。

I bought a net with fine mesh.  The tree now stands conspicuous when looked at from the public road.

でも、これで安心。網目のサイズは１ミリ角で、雨も日光も通します。

The net's mesh is 1 mm squares.  It allows rain and sunshine pass through.

今年は日本棗の種類がひとつ増えました。２年前からある日本棗は完熟時に俵型の実になるものですが、新たに加わったこの個体のは細長い実です。

This year, I have a new Japanese jujube.  (Jujube was introduced to Japan more than a thousand years ago but no-one bothered to cultivate improved varieties.  Over the centuries, natural variation occurred, but we simply bundle them as 'Japanese jujubes' and no specific variety names exist.)  The type I got 2 years ago produces squarish fruits.  This new type produces elongated teardrop shaped fruits.

子供の頃、近所の家の庭にあった成木の実とそっくり。その木の実は早生で夏の間に色づいて落ちていたような記憶です。この木のもだんだんと色が黄色くなってきています。

This looks exactly like the fruits of a tree that was growing in our neighbour's garden when I was a child.  The fruits on that tree matured quite early - during our summer holiday.  The fruits on this tree seem to be turning light-coloured already, and I am looking forward to comparing the taste.

グラニースミスりんご Granny Smith apple

 グラニースミスは夏の間の摘果後、最終的に20個残してありました。葉っぱがハダニで銀色になってしまったので、実の肥大は期待できないけど念のため果皮が黄色を帯びるまで放置する予定です。

Over the summer, I picked young fruits of Granny Smith leaving just 20 to mature.  The leaves became silver due to spider mites during summer, so the fruits did not become large.  I am leaving them on the tree hoping to see them turn yellow like cooking apples.

でも、１個試し採り。この段階のものがイギリスのスーパーで買える生食用の青リンゴです。今住んでいるところでガーデニングを始めるまで、グラニースミスが料理用品種で、樹上で完熟するとこれの倍くらいの大きなリンゴになるとは知りませんでした。

However, I am tempted to try one now.  This is the size and colour of Granny Smith commonly seen in shops in England for fresh eating.  Indeed, I did not know until I started gardening in my current place that this cultivar is a cooking apple and the fruit becomes much larger if left on the tree to full maturity.

捻りかたが下手だったので、小枝ごともげてしまった。

半割りにしてみると種が見えないので、

When I cut the fruit in half, I could not see the seeds.

更に切ると、種が十分熟しているようでした。味は甘見味が少し乗っていて、かつて食べ慣れていた齧ると目をつぶってしまうほどの酸っぱさではありませんでした。

Cutting further, seeds appeared and they looked mature.  

When I tasted the fruit, it was slightly sweet, unlike the old familiar Granny Smith which was so sour that the moment I took a bite I used to wince.

朝散歩など Morning Walk etc

 隣町の江古田へ行く途中にある調剤薬局の建物にはブドウ棚があり、毎年この時期たわわにブドウの房がぶら下がっています。特に世話をしている様子も見受けられないけど豊作です。

There is a dispensing pharmacy between our district and our neighbouring town, which has scaffolding with grape vines.  Around this time every year, the vines are heavy with grapes nearing maturity.  I have never seen anyone taking care of the plant, but every year is a bumper year.

ここは建物が密集している半商業地区の狭い路地で、風通しは悪いし、陽当たりは周りの建物に遮られて更に良くありません。なのに、葉っぱがハダニで銀色になることはありません。

This is a heavily built semi-commercial area with narrow back streets.  Air movement is poor, and direct sun light is limited.  Yet, the leaves never seem to suffer from spider mites but stay healthy.

こんなに丈夫な品種が何なのか分かりませんが、だんだん皮が透き通った感じになってきているので、そろそろ完熟のようです。

Whatever variety this tough plant is, the skin on the fruits is getting translucent, suggesting that the grapes are getting nearly ripe.

うちの近所の庭で見かけたネコ。タイガは顔にネコパンチを食らっても猫好きなので、目が釘付け。

A cat relaxing in my neighbour's garden.  In spite of several punches Taiga has received in the face, she likes cats and was rivetted on the spot.

綺麗な茶トラ猫。上唇の膨らみからすると、オスでしょう。Youtubeで海外の動画を見ていると、メスの茶トラも結構生まれるようですが、日本では稀なはず。

A beautiful ginger cat.  Judging by the full upper lip, it looks like a male.  In fact, almost all the ginger cats in Japan are male, although I have seen quite a few females in YouTube videos from abroad.

うちの斜め向かいにある小さな公園の栗の木には栗が鈴なり。

A lot of sweet chestnuts growing on the tree in the tiny park almost opposite to my house.

園芸品種ではなく柴栗なので実は小さいです。

This is a wild chestnut tree that you can find in mountains in Japan, and the nuts are small but very sweet.

今朝のローゼル。予想どおり２輪が開花。

As expected, two flowers were open this morning on the roselle plant.

昨日 咲いた花のガクは、これから赤く色づくのを見るのが楽しみです。

It will be interesting to watch the calyx from yesterday's flower turning red soon.

先日２度目のリンゴの袋外しをしたばかりですが、もう汚損果が出始めています。ただし汚損が発生するのはいつも赤肉種の「紅の夢」だけで、グラニースミスや紅玉は今までのところ無傷です。

I bagged the apples twice this summer.  Soon after removing the bags for the second time, dark spots began to appear on some of the red-fleshed apples called 'Kurenai-no-Yume'.  Damages are found only on this cultivar and the fruits of Granny Smith and Kogyoku are so far clean.

あぁもう、いいや！と思って最初の実を採りました。キズの中心にまるで的のように色の濃い点があるのは、もしかして虫の侵入あと？と思うと気味悪いですが、とにかく確認です。

Feeling helpless, I picked the first fruit shown above.  The dark centre looking like a target bothered me.  Is there a bug inside?  I had to check what it was.

半割りにしてみると、恐れていたイモムシっぽいものはいませんでした。その代わり、キズの部分がゼリー状。まるで人間の場合、外部からのバイ菌などと戦うために白血球が集合してできる膿を連想させました。

To my relief, I did not see any bug wriggling inside.  Instead, the dark spot was filled with jelly-like substance.  If it were a human body, white blood cells would gang up in order to fight against the intruding bacteria etc, with the result you get a pocket of pus.

散歩、リンゴ Walk, Apples

 最近 公園の草が伸び伸びで、タイガのような中型犬でも草地に入りたくありません。歩きにくいだけでなく、もしもマダニがいたら大変なので、皆さん敬遠しています。

The grass in the open fields of the Johoku Park has not been cut for weeks, and it is too long even for medium-sized dogs like Taiga to walk in.  Moreover, there is the risk of getting ticks, so we all avoid walking in the tall grass right now.

それにしても湿度の高い朝です。シャワーに入った後なのに、もう汗で首や二の腕がチクチクするほど。

It was another sticky morning.  I had taken a shower before I came out, but already the sweat was stinging my neck and upper arms.

桜の木の下はオープンスペースほどには草深い状態ではないので、となりの草地へ移動しました。

We moved to the field across the road, where the grass underneath the cherry trees was not dense or too tall.

タイガは冷たい草の上で満足そうな顔をしていますが、顔をみただけで草風呂の開始寸前だと分かります。

帰宅して、昨日のリンゴの続き。右側の汚損果が単なる齧り傷なのか、それともムシが中に入り込んだのか、突き止めたいです。

After getting home, I went back to the business of apples.  I wanted to see whether the damage was done by simply nibbling, or some larva burrowing into the fruit.

これ以上被害のないよう、袋を掛け直しました。100枚入りの商品だったので余裕です。

Having removed the damaged fruit, I bagged the apples once again.  Luckily, the packet I bought contained 100 bags, so I had more than enough left.

台所で半割にしてみると、単純な傷でした。でも、３日間くらい連続で穴が拡大していたので、どんな虫が物好きに通っていたのでしょう。野鳥なら、陽光面を突いたはずなので、鳥ではないと思っています。

I cut the damaged apple into half and found that it was simply a bite damage.  Considering that the damage became larger and deeper over 3 days, I wonder what bug had such tenacity.  The reason why I think it was a bug is because, if it were a bird, it would have pecked on the sunny side where it should have been the sweetest.

念のため糖度をチェック。左のは16.6度でした。

Out of curiosity, I applied the Brix meter, and it indicated 16.6％ with the one on the left.

右の陽光面を含む片割れは、28.9度。これは単に、一定の糖分があったけど、未熟果なので水分が無く、甘さが凝縮されていてこのような高い数値が出たのだと思います。

With the one on the right, which was getting most sun, it showed 28.9%.  However, there is no need to get overexcited.  For a given amount of sugar, the young fruit had little moisture, so the sugar content was highly concentrated, thus the high Brix result.

実がムダにならないよう、紅玉の幼果も１個採って来て、市販のペクチンを加えてジャムにしました。香りがいかにも青リンゴの美味しいジャムです。
In order not to waste the apple, I made jam, by adding another apple and store-bought pectin.  It was delicious with a strong green apple flavour.

今朝もハダニがうようよ動いていました。今のダニは灰色か黒の、肉眼で見える大きさのものです。いつものようにベーキングソーダの溶液を作ってスプレーして、30分放置。その後シャワー水をかけると、このようにオレンジ色の液体が袋についていました。ハダニの死骸からのものだと思います。

I saw a lot of spider mites this morning again.  Unlike those invisible ones that I had in June/July, the current ones are visible with grey or dark colour.  As usual, I made a solution with baking soda, cooked corn starch and water.  After spraying the solution, I left it for half an hour before showering.  After showering the leaves, I saw orange drops on the bags again, which must be from the dead mites.
