イチジクの蕾など Flower buds on new fig plant etc

 4月27日に買ったイチジクのゴールドフィグに蕾が出て来ました。元々太い木だったので運良ければ今年から実が生るかも、と期待してはいましたが嬉しいです。

The gold fig plant that I bought on 27th April this year has flower buds already.  Given the stout tree trunk, I was hoping to see some fruits sometime this year, so I am quite pleased.

葉腋ごとに蕾が出ている。

種から育てたボリジ（写真手前）が育っています。大きくなる植物のようで、スペース難から門の外に出してあります。ここに鉢を置いた当初 庭仕事をしていたら、通りがかった年輩ご夫婦の男性のほうの「何だ、この菜っ葉は！」と、まるで気分を害したような声が聞こえました。それくらい異様な雰囲気があります。

I grew these borage plants (the pot in front) from seeds.  Since they are large plants and I am severely short of space in my garden, I placed the pot outside of the gate.  Soon after, when I was working among the plants in the garden, an elderly couple passed by.  The husband, when he saw the borage plants, uttered 'What on earth are these leaves!', as if he was morally offended, and I agreed in my heart that they were not the most beautiful looking plants.

Same blue flowers as I have seen in photos.  These plants have been disappointing to me in many respects, so they may not stay here for long.

その背後に置いてあるトゲ無しノイバラは、今年の春に買って以来よく育っています。来年の開花は間違いなさそう。今のところ本当にトゲ無しなので満足です。

In the back is the thornless multiflora wild roses that I bought in early spring.  It has grown a lot, and I am expecting to see flowers next year.  So far, this plant has lived up to its reputation of being 'thornless'.

矮性ラズベリーのルビービューティの第一果が色づいていました。葉っぱの陰でベリーが隠れているので今朝まで気づきませんでした。

Berries on the dwarf raspberry, Ruby Beauty (Raspberry Shortcake in the US) are growing well.  Since the berries are hidden underneath the leaves, I did not notice a red berry until this morning.

これです。こうやって枝をはぐると、意外と沢山の実がなっている。地植えパワーのようです。

This is the one ready to be picked.  When I lifted the branches, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many young berries there were.  Perhaps this is the benefit of growing in the ground, rather in a pot.

赤葉山椒 Copper leaf Japanese pepper

 スーパーからの帰りに近所のJAを覗いたが最後、またしても苗を買ってしまいました。うちは極端なスペース難で鉢の置き場にも困るほど混雑しているのに、つい。右の緑色の葉が元気に展開しているのは、イチジクのゴールドフィグで、主幹はかなり太いです。左の小さな苗は赤葉山椒です。

On my way home from the supermarket, I made a mistake of dropping into the nearby JA, where I saw these young plants.  I am so short of space that finding space to squeeze these would be difficult.  The green plant on the right with vigorous leaves coming out is a golden fig.  Its tree trunk is quite large.  The small plant on the left is a Japanese pepper with copper leaves - a very rare variety.

雨上がりの湿度の高い高温のなかでイチジクの葉が匂っていたので、タイガが気になるようです。私はあの独特の匂いが結構好きです。イチジク葉のお茶が売られているようなので、そのうち自分でも作ってみようと思っています。

The rain had just stopped, and what with the high temperature, a strong scent was wafting from the fig leaves, which caught Taiga's nostrils.  In Japan, they sell tea leaves made of fig leaves, so I might try making fig tea myself in the future.

もう夕方近くなので、植え付けは明日にします。

It is already near dusk, so I will plant them in larger pots tomorrow.

３年ほど前に買ったルージュドボルドーが未だに蕾の気配さえないので、この黄肉イチジクが一足先に実をつけることを期待しています。

The variety called 'Rouge de Bordeaux' that I bought 3 years ago has not produced anything yet, and I am hoping that this golden fig would do better.

赤葉山椒のほうは、タイガ色。

The copper leaf Japanese pepper's colour is similar to Taiga's coat.

苗が幼いうちはこのように黒味を帯びた赤銅色で葉っぱがツヤツヤ。成長するとマットな葉になり、色も落ち着くようです。実際に育てている方のブログ記事では、赤い花、赤い実が育っていました。私は稲荷寿司の寿司飯に刻んだ山椒の葉を少し混ぜ込むのが好きなので、赤葉のは目立ちそう。

While the plant is young, the leaves are red like this with a shine.  As it grows older, the leaves will become brownish red and mat, instead of shiny red.  According to an article by a person actually growing this plant for a few years, it produces red flowers and red fruits.  I love adding leaves of Japanese pepper to the sushi rice when I make sushi with soy pouches (Inari Sushi) and I am going to make some with these leaves in the future.

イチジク苗 New fig plant

 ２日前に注文したイチジク苗が届きました。フランス原産の「ルージュ・ド・ボルドー」です。品種選びで、「ロンド・ド・ボルドー」との間で迷いましたが、スライスしたときの果肉の色が真っ赤なほうが、スイーツに利用したとき見栄えが良いと思って「ルージュ」に決定。ただし、イチジクという果実は、栽培状況やその年によって成果物の状態にバラつきが出やすい性質があると個人的に思っています。なので、下掲の写真はあくまでも目標です。糖度は30度に達するそうなので、天然のジャムを期待しています。

The fig plant that I ordered 2 days ago arrived today - a French variety called "Rouge de Bordeaux".  I nearly chose the other famous variety called "Ronde de Bordeaux" which is also said to be extremely sweet and delicious.  However, the flesh of Rouge de Bordeaux has a clearer red colour and it would look prettier than the other variety when used in cakes and tarts.  Mind you, fig fruits' quality can vary depending on the growing environment and from year to year.  Therefore, the picture below is just an ideal outcome.

On opening, I found a small bouquet of carnations together with the fig plant.  What a surprise!

で、本命の苗のほうはこちら。値段が安かったから注文したのですが、こんなに充実した苗が届いて嬉しいかぎりです。

Now the fig plant.  I ordered it because it was cheap and was not expecting such a decent plant - another surprise.

花はすぐに花瓶へ。それにしても、この気候のなかカーネーションの切り花を送るなんて、勇気あります。
I put the flowers in a vase right away.  I just cannot imagine sending cut flowers in this dreadful heat.  The little note said that it was a token of gratitude for the patronage.

初めて育てる品種なので、来年以降の味見が楽しみです。

比較的コンパクトな樹形に維持できる品種なので、鉢植えで管理可能。収穫は9-10月の一期生り、果重は70-90ｇ、糖度30度、だそうです。

I have never tried this variety before.  According to the readily available information on the internet, the plant can be kept compact, growing in a pot.  Harvest time September to October.  The fruit can weigh between 70-90 g.  Sugar content around 30%, which is extremely sweet.

ポットを切り開いてみると、固い根鉢ができていました。

I cut the plastic pot open with a knife.  The root was growing in circles.

猛暑の時期には絶対したくない事ですが、根っこをほぐしてムダに長い根っこは切り詰めました。その過程で、太い根っこが一旦鉢底を打ったあと地表に向かって垂直に伸びていたので、それを切り離しました。ダメ元で、根伏せにしてみます。自根苗なので、根伏せで苗ができたら本体と同じルージュ・ド・ボルドーになります。

念のため、ひと晩バケツ水につけておいて、明日、10号ロングスリット鉢に植え付ける予定です。
In an extremely hot weather like the one we have now, the last thing I want to do is to untangle the roots, but I did it.  As I did so, I found a large root growing upwards after hitting the bottom of the plastic pot.  I removed a section of it (the one on the left), thinking that perhaps I could grow a new plant out of this piece by burying it in soil.  Since this is not a grafted plant but growing on its own roots, any new plant will be another Rouge de Bordeaux.  

To compensate for the shock caused to the root, I left it in a bucket of water so that I could plant it tomorrow.

イチジク Figs

イチジクのビオレッタの残りの実を収穫しました。連日の雨でふやけて、熟しているのか分からないうちに野鳥に突かれるので無傷のものを全部採りました。

Last of 'Violetta' this year.  Due to the rainy season, the fruits are not getting enough sun.  Nevertheless, birds have been picking, so I decided to harvest what was left.

鉢は日陰に置いてあるせいか或いは雨のせいか、色づきかたがイマイチです。

柿の開花など Persimmon flowers etc

 柿の太秋が咲き始めました。苗を買ってきた初年度は１個だけ蕾が出てそれが収穫まで行ったのに、それ以降ろくに蕾も出ず、かと言って地植えにしたのに樹高がたいして伸びるわけでもなく２年が経ちました。今年は７個の蕾が出たので１個くらいは収穫できるのでは、と期待しています。

ラズベリーのジョーン・スクワイアの花は、いつ咲いたのか気づかないくらい目立たないです。これ↓は、昨日咲いていたところを捉えたものです。

Raspberry 'Joan Squire' flowers are inconspicuous and I rarely notice them.

こちら↓は今朝の雨の中。ケインが華奢なので、あまり大きな房になると実の重みであっけなく折れます。

イチジクのビオレッタの夏果が育っています。もう何年も植え替えしていないので豊産性ではなくなりました。

ヤフオクを覗いていたら以前から関心のあったイチジクの「ヨルダン」が１円スタートで出ていました。1,000円を予算としてダメ元で入札しておいたら、そのまま時間切れで落札してしまいました。もう、出品者の業者さんには申し訳なくて。。。　　その業者からは過去にミカン苗の田口早生やさせぼ温州、キウイ苗など、複数の苗を入手しているのですが、苗の代金が１円なんて初めてです。


その苗が今日届きました。ネットの情報によると、ヨルダンは赤実系の二季成り、濃厚な味で豊産性だそうで、大いに期待しています。

葉っぱは健康そうな色です。

根っこも十分。根の巻きは表面的なものだったので、軽くほぐしてから切らずに植えつけました。

９号菊鉢でスタートです。イギリスのサイトの記述では、ヨルダンは幼苗のうちから実をつける品種だそうで、この苗の頂点にも１個の「豆電球」が出ていました。来年が楽しみです。

ゴールドフィグがここ２、３日で急激に肥大してきました。触るとポタポタ餅のように柔らかいので、左の実を試し採りすることにしました。この色で完熟なら、あまり野鳥に注目されずに済みそうです。

果重は約８０ｇ。苗が充実してきたので、今年の実は今までになく大きいです。

糖度を測ってみると１７．１度です。夏果なので比較的低いですが、梅雨の雨水をたっぷり吸って極めてジューシー。とても美味しいです。

イチジク Figs

イチジクのビオレッタの第１果が色づいてきました。今年はまだヒヨドリを見ていませんが、網掛けしてないので早めに採ろうと思います。


この苗はもう９号鉢で限界にきているようです。実の数はまあまあ有りますが、葉っぱが私の手の平程度のサイズです。最初はコガネ等を疑いましたが、土質は正常だし鉢から引っこ抜こうにも外れないので、どうやら根詰まりを起こしているようです。なので収穫が終わり次第、挿し穂を採って苗の更新をします。

 ちょっとグロい外見。でも食べてみると十分甘くて美味しかったです。

ロードスは巨大な葉っぱと沢山の実が着いているので、あと２，３年はこの苗で行けそうです。

同様にゴールドフィグも健康そのもの。今年は今までになく沢山の実が着いています。

この実は首が垂れ始めたので、今月中には熟すでしょう。苗が幼いのでゴールドフィグは、今までは貧産、小粒でしたが、今年は豊産で実のサイズもアップです。

今年のイチジクは、例年より小粒ながらもビオレッタとロードスを８月に収穫できましたが、ゴールドフィグは９月になってやっと幼果が出てきました。この寒さではなかなか熟しそうにありません。

 葉も実も綺麗なので、あきらめがつきません。

 そこで、２階の一室に取り込みました。常緑樹のグアバなら、辛抱強く室内で管理していれば冬でもそのうち幼果が熟してきますが、イチジクは落葉樹なので葉っぱが着いている間の勝負です。

グアバは、最低気温 15℃ 以下に当てたくないので、２日前から取り込んであります。小鳥の部屋なので、冬は暖房で寒さをしのげます。ただ、放鳥時は見張っていないと葉っぱを齧られてしまいます。小松菜よりも、たまにしかありつけないグアバの葉のほうが好きなようです。

向かって奥の左端と真ん中が沖縄のシュンさんから幼苗で頂いた黄肉グアバ、右端が知人を介して入手したルビースプリームの種からの苗、さらに、手前の幼苗２鉢は、米国の業者から購入したルビースプリームの種からの苗です。

取り込んだばかりの今は葉っぱが綺麗ですが、そのうち日照不足と根っこへのストレスで苗が弱ってくると、カイガラムシが湧いてきます。そうなると真冬でも外に出してシャワー水で苗全体を洗わなければならないので、管理が大変です。

黄肉グアバの幼果は、まだピンポン玉サイズにもなっていません。
