 城北公園にはアジサイが沢山植えられている箇所があります。梅雨入りしたので、そのアジサイが開花しているか見に行きました。実際に着いてみると、まだ咲き始めたばかりのようです。

There is a place in Johoku Park where they have a lot of hydrangeas growing.  Since the rainy season has started, I wondered if they are in bloom now.  When we arrived, I found that they have just started flowering and nowhere near in full force.

アジサイが植わっている斜面には通路があるので歩いてみます。

There is a narrow foot path through the hydrangeas.

少数派のピンク系のが綺麗に見えます。

I find the pink ones pretty, although there are not many of them.

木によってはこのように濃いピンクの花もあります。花の塊の形状から、上のとは品種が異なるようです。上の写真のはガクアジサイ寄りで扁平なのに対し、下の写真のはこんもりした形。

Some of them are in deep pink like these.  Judging by the shape of the flower bunch, this tree seems to be of a different variety from that of the photo above.  The flower bunch in the above photo looks flat with a gap in the middle, whereas the bunch in the photo below is solid and globular.  

これは青が綺麗に出ています。葉がしっかり厚めでつややかなので、ガクアジサイでしょうか。

This one is in beautiful deep blue.  I think this is a lace cap hydrangea rather than the Japanese wild hydrangea - the leaves of lace cap hydrangeas are thick with smooth surface, whereas the leaves of the wild variety is flimsy with miniscule hair.

これは「墨田の花火」の2年目以降のものに見えます。アジサイは育苗業者が集荷に向けて創り出した最高に立派な状態と、翌年以降の咲き方とでは、大きなギャップのあるものが多いと個人的に思っています（一度も苗を買ったことありませんが）。

This one looks like the cultivar called 'Sumida-no-Hanabi', but in the 2nd year onwards.  I find that some hydrangea cultivars look alarmingly different from second year onwards - almost like a fraud (says I, who has never bought a hydrangea in her life).  It goes to show the skill of commercial growers who can create such a miracle that lasts only for the initial season.

墨田の花火は10年以上前、このあたりで大ヒットして、民家の軒先に地植えや鉢植えでよく見かけました。

Sumida-no-Hanabi was all the rage in Tokyo more than 10 years ago.  I used to see this in so many private gardens anywhere I went.  The name means 'Sumida River Fireworks' which is a famous annual event in Tokyo at the height of summer (the bits hanging look like the embers of a firework after the explosion).  The name also evokes an Edo period nostalgia.

その次に流行ったのが「ダンスパーティ」で、墨田の花火のピンクバージョンといった外観でした。この↓株は、もしかしてダンスパーティの翌年以降？草丈が高すぎて花序の形が見えません。

The next sensation was a cultivar called 'Dance Party' which looked like a pink version of Sumida-no-Hanabi.  I think this tree is the seasoned version of Dance Party, although I cannot see the shape of the flower bunch well since the tree is too tall.

これはカシワバアジサイでしょうか。

This seems to be Hydrangea quercifolia from North America.  We call it 'Kashiwaba Ajisai' which means 'oak-leaf hydrangea'.

the flower bunch looks unusual.

アジサイはまだこれから開花ピークに向かうようなのでまた来てみることにして、今日はこれで帰ることにしました。

The hydrangeas have only started to flower, so we will come back in a few days.  For now, we go home.

途中、甲斐犬のヒナとセナに会えました。

On our way home, we ran into the Kaiken duo, Hina and Sena.

タイガとヒナは会うたびに大喜びです。

Taiga and Hina (the dark one) are always excited to see each other.

こうしてヒナを見ると、本当に黒い。目もツメも黒い。タイガの目はこげ茶色、爪はクリーム色に近い薄茶色です。

Hina is a black brindle, and she indeed is dark - her eyes and nails are also black.  Taiga's eyes are brown, whereas her toenails are creamy light brown.

帰宅途中の民家の庭のアンズはもう終わっていて、道路にこぼれ落ちた実が雨で草っていました。うちのは？と気になり早速チェック。実が生らなくなったスモモに高接ぎして今年が初めての開花・結実で、数個しか生っていませんが楽しみです。

On our way home, we passed by a house where the apricot tree had finished its season for this year, with a few overripe fruits having fallen on the road.  It made me wonder if my apricots were ready yet.  I grafted two apricot scions on a plum tree, and this is the first year of flowering and fruit setting - although there are only a few of them.

この実が最も色づいています。

早すぎたようで、実をもぎ取るのに力が要りました。実は硬いし、まだ香りもありません。台所で追熟させてから試食してみます。（将来、これくらいの大きさのナツメが生ったら嬉しいな、と関係ないことを考えてしまいました。）

Actually, it was a little too early.  I had to apply a bit of force to pluck it.  The fruit is still hard and there is no scent.  Hopefully, it will ripen off the tree in the kitchen.  Commercial growers probably pick the fruits at this stage, so that they would ripen in the course of distribution.  (I could not help thinking how happy I would be if I could grow jujube fruits of this size in the future.)

アンズのサニーコットがだいぶ大きくなってきました。スモモに高接ぎしてあるので沢山はとれませんが、季節のものとして有難く頂いています。

The young apricot fruits are growing nicely.  I grafted apricot scions on a plum tree a few years ago.  Although the fruits are not many, I appreciate them as a seasonal thing.

本当は上向きの実は幼果のうちに取り除くべきですが、あまりに数が少ないのでそのままにしておきました。枝の上で葉っぱの陰にならないぶん、一番早く熟しそうです。

Normally, you are supposed to remove young fruits that are growing upright.  However, I do not get many fruits on these grafted branches as yet, so I left this one untouched.  Growing on the upside of a branch and getting direct sunlight, this fruit will ripen ahead of others.

５月に発芽していたモミジの苗のうち、１個だけ赤葉でないものが混じっていました。その苗が一番元気がよく、他のは２枚のままなのに、この苗は葉が増えてきました。出始めは赤いので、これはこれで綺麗です。４個のそれぞれ葉っぱが個性的なので、このまま世話していたら１個だけに絞れなくなってしまいそうです。４個全部を平皿に植えて盆栽仕立てにすればよいかも。

Of the maple tree seedlings that germinated this spring, one was not a red-leaf variety, but that one is growing better than the others.  The red-leaf seedlings still have only two leaves, while this one is growing like a little tree.  It may be a green variety, but the new leaves are orange while they are new, and this tree is pretty in its own way.  If I get too attached to them, I might plant them all on a flat plate and treat them like a bonsai.

私が植物を眺めている間、玄関前で散歩を待っているタイガ。静かに圧をかけてきます。

While I was looking at the plants, Taiga was waiting for me.  I felt her silent pressure.

夕方、少し涼しくなった頃に散歩に出てすぐに、同じ地区に住むクレオ君に久しぶりに会えました。数年前に保護され迎えられた子で、元は野犬の群れにいたそうです。極端なビビリで、よその人やワンコが全くダメです。でも、亡くなった先代の子と同様、だんだんと私の接近には慣れてきました。

We went out for an evening walk, and soon, we met a dog who lives in our district, named Cleo.  We had not seen each other for some time.  He grew up in a pack of wild dogs in the countryside and was rescued and adopted by the current owners several years ago.  He is extremely skittish and wants to avoid people and dogs outside of his home.  His predecessor was also the same and, like his predecessor, Cleo is slowly warming up to me.

タイガとの距離はまだまだで、視線を合わせるのも拒否。尻尾がまるまっています。

With Taiga, it is going to take much longer.  Cleo refuses to meet Taiga's eyes, and his tail is down.

ゆっくり慣れてくれればよいです。

He can take it slowly - Taiga will be patient.

公園に着いて会った初対面の懐こい子。シーズーとトイプードルのミックスで、ウニちゃん、６歳だそうです。目がマルチーズっぽい可愛い子。

At the park, we met a new face.  A female Shih Tzu-Toy Poodle mix, named Uni.  Her eyes look like those of a Maltese, and she is so pretty.

常にニコニコして、飼い主さんによると人が大好きな子だそうです。

She is all smiles, and her mom tells me that Uni loves meeting people.

タイガを怖がる様子はありません。

She is not afraid of Taiga.

飼い主さんがタイガを撫でてもヤキモチを焼かない。

Nor does she get jealous when her mom strokes Taiga.

タイガには興味がなさそうで、私に寄ってきました。

Uni was more interested in me.

私の膝に上ってきてスリスリ。

She climbed onto my knees and snuggled up.

何ともカワイイ。カメラとの距離が近すぎてボケ写真しかとれません。

So adorable.  She was too close to the camera for me to take clear pictures.

何だかこのままくつろぎそうです。膝の上で、全く重さがなくて軽いクッションでも乗せている感覚です。

She started relaxing on my knees.  She weighed nothing, and it felt like having a small cushion rather than a dog.

ちょうど通りかかった初めて見る赤柴の子。リンちゃん、３歳。

A red Shiba Inu passing by.  Her name is Lin, 3 years old.

笑顔がとてもカワイイです。

Lin has such a big smile.

リンちゃんは非常に小柄な柴で、シーズーサイズのウニちゃんと同じくらい。鼻と鼻で挨拶できたので相性は良さそうです。

Lin is a small Shiba Inu, and she looks almost the same size as Uni who is Shih Tzu size.  They greeted each other nose to nose.

冬支度と接ぎ木 Getting ready for winter etc

 パッションフルーツの剪定をしました。この↓紫実の品種は２本のツルを残して後は切り捨てました。冬の間、栄養を分散させないためです。

I got rid of most of the new vines of the passion fruit (the purple fruit variety), ahead of cold weather.  They would have to be taken inside by the end of this month.

これら２本のツルに付いている蕾はせいぜい４個咲けばよいので、それに対する葉っぱは十分あります。調べたら、この紫実の品種は自家受粉するそうなので冬の間、屋内で実が育つかの実験です。

I left 2 vines with flower buds growing fast.

まだ白っぽい花びらは見えません。

Hopefully, I will see the flowers soon.  This variety is self-pollinating and most cold-tolerant, so I only need this variety.

こちら↓は黄色い実のなる品種。耐寒性は紫実の品種に劣るそうだし、自家受粉もしないようなので、今テンションさがりっぱなしです。せめて耐寒性の高い品種なら、最近の真っ赤な花の咲く美味しい品種を接ぐことも可能ですが.....前途はかなり厳しいです。

This yellow-fruit variety is neither cold-tolerant nor self-pollinating.  So I cut it down to about 40cm to let it survive the winter.

アンズのサニーコットは４年くらい前に生って以来、高接ぎしたスモモ品種たちがよく実を着ける一方で、本体は一個も生っていませんでした。なので、スモモに高接ぎして処分する予定です。

以下は９月にスモモのマーキュリーに2か所接いだものですが、もう動きだしています。念のため、今日、エレファントハートと彩の姫にも２か所ずつ接いでおきました。

The apricot tree is not producing fruits and I decided to replace it with something else.  Before that, I grafted it onto the Mercury plum tree a few weeks ago, and they have already started growing.  I also grafted 2 scions each to Elephant Heart and Sai-no-hime plums this afternoon.

こちら↓は、おなじくマーキュリーに接いだサマーエンジェル。果実の特性（味だけでなく粘核など）や収穫のタイミング、用途などを考えると、アンズ同様、ほんの少し採れれば満足な品種です。対して、彩の姫は、いくら採れても飽きないです。本当に個人の好み次第。

These are 2 scions of Summer Angel plums, grafted onto Mercury.

昨日買った赤かのこゆりの球根を植えつけました。袋から出すと、球根が2個くっついているように感じていた理由が分かりました。成長してパッカンと分離しようとしています。怖いのでそのまま植えつけましたが、来年の今頃なら安全に2個に分離できるでしょう。

The lily bulb that I bought yesterday.  It is mature enough to have almost split into two bulbs.  These will produce 2 flowering stems next summer.

ますます来年の夏が楽しみになってきました。

今日は蒸し暑くて蚊が沢山出ていたので、蚊取り線香を玄関前に置いて作業をしました。タイガは、家の中が退屈なので外に出たいけど、蚊取り線香の臭いはキライ。なので、家の横で煙から隠れるようにしてうずくまっていました。昨日シャンプーしたばかりなので、あまり土の上には座ってほしくないのですが。

Taiga wanted to come out of the house but hated the anti-mosquito fume (smells nice to humans) which I placed in front of the porch.  So, she found a spot where she could avoid the fume and stay outdoors.  She is like a cat - always thinking of her own comfort instead of being close to me.
