リンゴに害虫 Apple with insect attack

 リンゴの袋を外して1週間ほど経ちました。袋なしの状態だと、毎日の水やりで少しずつ肥大しているのを実感できます。

It has been a week since I removed the bags from the apples.  Without the bags, I can watch the fruits growing, albeit slowly, when I water the trees every day.

右側のまん丸の実はグラニースミス、向こうの扁平な実が「紅の夢」です。

The round fruits on the right are Granny Smith, and the flat fruits on the left are the red-fleshed variety called 'Kurenai-no-Yume'.

これは紅の夢の中で一番大きいもの。

This is the largest of Kurenai-no-Yume.

手に取るとズシリときます。

It weighs heavy in my hand.

これはグラニースミスの最も大きいもの。まだまだ小さいけれど、この品種独特の緑に白い斑点や丸い形をみると、生食用にスーパーなどに並んでいたのを思い出します。生食用のは、外観の良いうちに早採りして出荷されるのでやや小粒。そのまま木に生らせておくと、普通サイズのリンゴに育つけど、形が若干ゴツゴツしてくるのと、果皮が黄色っぽくなります。

This is the largest of Granny Smith.  It is still tiny, but it shows the white spots against the backdrop of green, and the shape of the fruit is roundish.  It reminds me of the Granny Smith apples I used to buy in supermarkets when I was a student in England.  Granny Smith apples sold for fresh eating are harvested before they are fully ripe.  As a result, they are small in size but have the beautiful appearance.  When fully ripe, those apples are as large as any other varieties, but the shape is not as smooth, and the skin colour becomes pale.

ここへ来て問題発生。これ↓は１週間前に袋を外した直後のきれいな実。

A few days ago, I spotted a problem in Kurenai-no-Yume.  This photo is from 1 week ago, when I removed the bags, and the fruits are perfectly clean.

それが現在はこのように、何かに齧られたような跡があります。２,３日前に傷を発見したときはコガネムシか何かが齧ったあと放置されたのだろうと思っていました。それが日に日に穴が広く且つ深くなってきました。虫が果実の中へ入り込んだのかもしれません。

１週間前の予定では、これから着色のために日光に当てていくつもりでしたが、やはり再度袋を掛けて保護したほうが良さそうな気がしてきました。

This is how the same fruits look now.  The one on the right has a bite mark.  When I noticed it a few days ago, I thought it had been bitten by a scarab beetle.  I hoped that would be the end of it.  However, the damage has been getting larger and deeper every day, and I fear that an insect larva has burrowed into the fruit.

When I removed the bag, I was hoping that the fruits will get plenty of sun and become red as they should.  Now, I am thinking of bagging the fruits again.

上の同じ実を違う角度から見ると、陽光面がほんのり色づき始めているようなので、本当は袋を掛けたくないところですが、袋ならいくらでも余っているので、明日にでも実行します。

This is the same fruit, looked at from a different angle, showing that the skin is slightly turning yellow.  Ideally, I would like to leave them exposed to the sun.  However, I have many more bags left, so why not use them?

今の気候はローゼルの苗にとって最適なので、ぐんぐん育っています。次々と枝が分岐して、かなりの場所をとっています。現在の草丈は150cmくらい。開花時期は９月以降らしいので、それまでに枝が分岐するほど花着きも良くなるはずです。
The current hot and humid weather provides an ideal environment for the roselle plant, and mine has been growing rapidly with new branches coming out one after another.  Currently, the plant is about 150 cm tall.  It is expected to flower from September onwards.  As far as I am concerned, there is no need for hurry.  The more the plant grows new branches, the more flowers can be expected, and our hot weather lasts up to the end of September.

毎日の水やりのときに枝を凝視していますが、まだ蕾らしきものは見当たりません。

Every day when I water the plant, I stare at each branch, but I have not spotted anything resembling flower buds yet.

バラ苗おこし等 Re-shaping Hansa bushes etc

 バラのハンザがジャバラの間から道路側に伸びていたので、庭の内側へ引っ張り込もうと最近思い始めました。試しに2本地植えになっているうちの左側の苗を引き込みました。ハンザは狂暴なトゲにびっしり覆われているので、ステンレス製のトングとベルトを使って引っ張りました。結果は、ずいぶんスッキリした感じです。

It has been on my mind recently to pull the Hansa bushes towards the inside of the garden, instead of allowing them to hang through the accordion fence.  I first tried it with the bush on the left and liked the result - it looked neat.  With Hansa, the whole tree is covered with vicious thorns, and I had to use a metal tongue and a belt to pull the branches in.

左側の苗はスカスカの育成不良だったので、引き込みは簡単でした。

The growth habit of the bush on the left was not vigorous, so it was easy to do the job as a starter.

残る右側の苗には４個のローズヒップが生っています。かなり色づいたので、１個味見してみることに。

The bush on the right has 4 rose hips growing.  One of them looks red and inviting, so I thought I would try the taste.

食べ物を齧ったあとを人に見せるのは大変失礼なことは承知で、果肉はこのように分厚いです。味はというと、昔あるブログ記事で読んだように、本当にリンゴのような風味でした。ただし、店で売られるリンゴの品質ではありません。でも、たくさん生ったら甘酸っぱいローズヒップティーにしたいです。今は閉店で無くなったスーパーで以前、チリ産の乾燥ローズヒップが売られていて、お茶にするととても美味しかったです。

It is considered very rude and uncouth to show the bite mark in Japan.  However, I wanted to show the thickness of the flesh, so I excuse myself.  As to the taste, just as it was described in a blog article I saw many years ago, it tasted like an apple - but not a high end apple in the shop.  If I can grow a lot of these fruits in the future, I would love to dry them and make rose hip tea.  A shop in the neighbourhood used to sell dried rose hips imported from Chile, which made beautiful tea.

右側の苗は枝がよく分岐していたので、ジャバラの後ろへ引っ張り込む際、２本の大枝を失いました。作業が終わったときは一安心。

The bush on the right had many branches and, as I was pulling them in, I lost two large branches.  I was so relieved when the job was finally done.

これまでジャバラの上は、最初はキウイ、次にブラックベリーのナバホを絡ませていたので、ハンザにとって陽当たりも風通しもあまり良くなかったです。先日２本のハンザの間に植えたローガンベリーのワイマテが根付かない場合、スペアを植えるのではなく、門の横に鉢植えになっている３本目のハンザを真ん中に植えるかもしれません。

In the past, I used to grow Kiwi, followed by Navaho blackberry, taking up the space above the Hansa roses.  As a result, the growing environment for Hansa was not very airy or sunny.  If the Loganberry that I planted recently between the two roses does not survive, then I might plant the 3rd Hansa that is currently growing in a pot next to the gate.

７月12日に、冬からの挿し木が成功したナツメを鉢上げしました。これ↓はそのときのようす。

The jujube cutting from last winter had enough roots, which I planted in a pot on July 12th.  This was how it looked then.

ひと月の間に、ここまで育ちました。

It has grown to this in a month.

鉢上げした当時は伸び出したばかりの恒常的な枝がすっかり木質化して、将来の主幹になりそうです。

When it was potted, a permanent branch had just grown out of the cutting.  It has turned wooden since, and it looks like a future trunk.

上の写真では大した成長でないように見えるかもしれませんが、根っこは活発に育っていて、既に地面とつながっていました。鉢を持ち上げようとしたら、ブチブチ音を立てて根っこがちぎれていました。

The plant in the photo above may not look like having grown a lot, but its roots have been very active.  Already, the roots were growing into the ground and, when I tried to lift the pot. they made tearing sounds.

モミジ盆栽 Maple tree bonsai

 赤葉モミジの盆栽が今日やっとできました。

A bonsai with red leaf maple seedlings has been set up, at last.

3日ほど前に足をつけて日光干しにして乾燥させました。

I attached the legs to the pot 3 days ago and left it on the upstairs balcony so that it would dry fast in the full sun every day.

乾燥させたあとでも、この材質には弾力性があり、粘土というよりは樹脂製の素材です。手にとると全然重みがなくて、本当にこれで役割を果たせるのか不安になるほどです。

Even after getting dry, the pot is somewhat soft and resilient - it feels more like resin, rather than clay.  When I hold it in my hand, it feels light as tissue paper, and it makes me worry if this is really going to do the job as a bonsai pot.

植え付け作業を外でやると蚊の大群に襲われるので、部屋の中で行います。軽石を発芽苗が植わっていた土と混ぜて用土にします。仕上げは水で湿らせておいたコケ。

I gathered all I needed in a room upstairs, since doing it outside would attract a swarm of mosquitoes.  I mixed the pumice with the soil of the seedlings.  The moss is for the finishing touch.

初めての試みにしては、いとも簡単に作業を終了。この器を作り終えた時点では「大き過ぎ！」と思って絶望していましたが、実際に苗を植えてみると、たぶんコケが体裁を整えてくれたおかげで、大失敗というほどには感じていません。でも、いつかお店でまともな鉢を見かけたら、それに植え替えます。

Even though I had never set up a bonsai before, the work was done in no time.  When I made the pot several days ago, I was dismayed to see how large it was relative to the sizes of the seedlings.  However, after actually planting the seedlings, I thought they looked not too bad, probably thanks to the effect of the moss.

こうやってみると、赤葉モミジって結構カワイイですね。たくさん種を蒔いたうちの４個だけ発芽して、うち１個は緑色の葉。そして赤葉のうちの１本は、最近近所へ嫁に行きました。当初考えていた「３本仕立て」よりは、この２本のほうが余裕があって良かったです。ちなみに、緑色のを使わなかった理由は、成長スピードが赤葉とは全然異なり、今では30cm近くに伸びているので、一緒の鉢に盆栽として植えるには適していないからです。

Seeing the seedlings in the pot, I am amazed how pretty they look.  I sowed many seeds in autumn last year, but only 4 of them germinated.  One of them was a normal, green leaf maple.  Of the 3 red leaf maples, one was given away to my neighbour recently.  Although, originally, I was thinking of a bonsai with 3 red leaf maples, I think that would have been too crowded.  As to the green leaf seedling, its growth habit is too different - it is now as tall as 30 cm, and not suitable for use with the red seedlings in the same bonsai pot.

コケはいくらでもあったので、気前よく使いました。

I used the moss generously to cover the surface of the soil.

鉢に足が着いていると水はけに関して安心です。

It was worth adding the legs to the pot for better drainage.

今日も発狂しそうなほどの蒸し暑さでした。今の時期、毎日は買い物に出なくて良いよう、まとめ買いしていますが、今日はその食料補充の日で、八百屋さんとスーパーをハシゴしました。帰宅すると、即、冷水シャワーです。

夕方散歩ではタイガも疲れていて、草地に着くと座り込みです。

It was another maddeningly hot and humid day today.  In this weather, I try to buy foodstuff enough for 2-3 days.  Today was one of those days when I had to replenish the fridge.  After visiting a greengrocer and a supermarket, it was lifesaving to get into a cold shower.  

During our evening walk, Taiga was also exhausted from the heat and sat down on the grass as soon as we reached the nearest field.

そのうち、いつもの草風呂。

Soon, she started her 'grass bath'.

私はセミの声を聴きながら、呼吸するのにもエネルギー節約しながらじっとしています。こんな暑さでも、真冬の惨めなほど寒い日には懐かしく思いだすのでしょうか。

As to myself, listening to the deafening sounds of cicadas, I tried to save my energy even when breathing.  Will I ever miss these hot and humid summer days, on a miserably cold winter day?

モミジの盆栽鉢作り Bonsai pot for maple seedlings

今年の春に発芽した赤葉モミジの苗を植え付けるための浅皿を探していましたが、浅いタイプのものはなかなかお店では見つかりません。唯一、イメージ通りのを見かけたのは、散歩中に通りがかった空き家の庭に放置された大小様々な鉢の山の天辺に乗っていたものでした。それを思い浮かべながら自分で作ろうと思い、粘土を通販でゲット。手にとって「あれっ」と思ったのは、粘土とは思えない軽さ。

I have been looking for a shallow bonsai pot for my red-leaf Japanese maple seedlings.  However, deep, modern looking pots are in vogue, and I could not find anything of the shape I needed.  The only one that fit the image I had in mind was lying on top of a heap of abandoned pots in the garden of an uninhabited house that I passed by when walking with Taiga.  So, I decided to make one myself and got a packet of clay that is said to be water resistant - i.e., it does not melt in water.  When I held it in my hand, I was surprised to see how light it was - nothing like the weight of natural clay.

水彩絵の具を練り込んでカラー粘土にすることも可能だそうです。絵具を持ち合わせないので、そのまま使います。将来、好みが変わったら新たに粘土を買って、色付けや形などで工夫してみようと思います。

According to the instruction, you can mix water-colour paint to make the clay colourful.  I did not have any painting colours, so I decided to keep it simple for my first pot.  This material is very cheap and, if I change my mind in the future, I will try using the colour or come up with a different shape.

袋を開けてみると、今まで見たことない材質です。しかも泡っぽくて柔らかいプラスチックのような感覚。練っていても全く手が汚れません。

When I opened the packet, it was something totally unfamiliar.  It was foamy, and it was more like soft plastic material rather than 'clay'.  Moreover, my hands remained clean whatever I did with the material.

まずは、土の水はけをよくするために、鉢底用の足を作っておきます。長さを同じに切ったら、本体が乾燥してからつけるために数日保管。それまでにはこれらの足も硬く乾燥しているはずなので、余った粘土は密封しておいて接着剤として使う予定。材質がゴムのようにぐねぐねして変形するので、いま本体にとりつけようとすると長さも形もバラバラになってしまいます。

I first made legs for the pot to increase drainage.  Having ensured that they were of the same size and length, I decided to leave them for several days until when the pot would be dry and hard enough to attach these.  The leftover clay will be kept wrapped until when I use it as glue for the legs and the pot.  The material is too rubber-like and unstable, and if I try to attach them to the pot today, the shape and length will be all different.

本体用の粘土は十分あります。適当な厚みに延ばしたら、コッペパン用の型を利用して形作りすることにしました。

There is enough clay to make a pot.  After rolling the clay out to a suitable thickness, I used the mould for a bun.

Having removed the bread mould, I started to shape the pot.

水はけ用の穴を3か所に開けました。手作り感満載。イメージトレーニングしていたより遥かに難しくて苦戦しました。手触りがゴムのような材質で、つかみどころがない。従来の天然の粘土とは違い、手を離したとたんに形が崩れて勝手に変形してしまいます。結局、グラタン皿のような出来上がり。

I made 3 punctures to ensure good drainage.  The pot looks very unsophisticated - this is very different from the image I had at the start.  In my defense, I can only say that this material is a shape shifter.  Unlike the natural clay, it changes its shape the moment I take my hands off.  It ended up looking like a gratin dish.

最後には、半分投げやりで終了。

Well, this will have to do for now.

粘土の厚みによって３～７日かけて完全に乾燥するそうなので、すぐには使えません。苗と並べてみると、大きすぎました。でも、そのうち苗が育つでしょう。

The instruction says that, depending on the thickness of the clay, it will take 3-7 days to get completely dry.  So, I cannot use it yet.  Looking at the pot and the seedlings, I think the pot was too large - the seedlings will have to grow to fit the pot.

タイガの換毛期はまだ終わっていなかったのか、最近 抜け毛が激しかったので午後にシャンプーしました。毎日ファーミネーターをかけているより、洗ったほうが手っ取り早いです。シャンプーのあとは自然乾燥の旅で公園へ。

It seems that Taiga's moulting was not done yet.  She has been shedding heavily again recently, so I shampooed her this afternoon.  Rather than brushing her with the Furminator every day, it is a lot quicker to wash her.  After the shampoo, we headed for the park to dry her in the sun.

歩いているうちに、白っぽいアンダーコートの抜け毛が浮き上がってきます。これを指でつまんで引っ張ろうものなら、ゴソッと抜けてくる短い毛のやり場が無くなるのと終わりがないので、引っ張りたい誘惑に耐えながら歩きます。

As Taiga was walking, the loose fur from the pale undercoat started surfacing.  If I ever pulled some of it out with my fingers, a huge chunk would come out and I would not be able to stop doing it.  So, I had to resist the temptation and kept walking.

城北中央公園に来たついでに、この公園に１本だけあるノムラもみじを見に行きました。

Since we were at the Johoku Central Park, we went to the spot where the only Nomura maple tree grows in this park.

今は夏葉の色で、薄茶色です。うちの発芽苗もノムラの種からですが、先の写真のとおり春からずっと真っ赤です。樹齢が関係してくるのでしょうか。

As it is summer, the leaves are light brown.  My red-leaf seedlings are also Nomura variety, but their leaves are as red as they were in spring - perhaps due to the seedlings' age?

秋になると再び赤葉になるので、紅一点で目立ちます。

In autumn, this tree will stand out since it will be the only red tree against the background of green and yellow.

タイガが地面の臭い嗅ぎに夢中。ワンコはなぜかミミズの臭いが大好きで、地表に出たミミズを見つけると地面に肩をこすりつけてスリゴロすることが良くあります。今その気配があったので、広場の先のほうへ移動しました。

Taiga was occupied with sniffing the ground.  Dogs love the smell of ground worms and, if they find one on the surface, they will rub their shoulders against the worm.  Right now, Taiga looked about to do that, so we moved to the other side of the field.

台風８号の影響で今朝も早い時間には小雨が降っていました。日光でその水分が蒸発してくると、もう蒸し暑いのなんの。

The effect of the typhoon No. 8 was lingering this morning with light rain in the early hours.  The sun came out after that, and the ground moisture has been rising all day.  It was very muggy.

帰ろう、ね、ね？　帰宅後には玄関内で、ドライヤー掛けの作業が待っています。ドライヤーで毛が舞い上がると、汗だくの顔にもろに引っ付きます。かといって、この時期、玄関の外でこれをやろうものなら、蚊の餌食になります。

I coaxed Taiga to start heading home.  I had to save my energy to finish her drying process with a dryer at home.  In this weather with lots of mosquitoes outside, I have to use the dryer in the porch.  The dryer blows the undercoat hair into the air, and it sticks to my sweaty face.  I have to conserve my strength for all that.

帰りはミンミンゼミの声に急かされるように、公園の出口を目指しました。

We headed for the exit of the park amid the ringing sounds of cicadas.
