コーネリアンチェリーなど Cornelian cherry etc

 コーネリアンチェリーのパイオニア苗が５月１日に届いてから一月たちました。最近まで変化が無かったのが、やっと枝先が伸び始めました。

It has been one month since Cornus mas 'Pioneer' arrived on 1st May this year.  Since then, there was no growth until a few days ago, but now I can see some new buds.

ほんの２センチほどですが、生きているのを確認できたので嬉しいです。根っこが定着し始めているようです。

They are only a few centimeters long, but at least I can rest assured that the plant wants to live.  Probably, the root system is just getting established.

それにしても、葉っぱの色の違いが気になります。パイオニアの葉は苗が到着したときの色よりも濃くなって、今は黒味を帯びた緑色なのに対し、カザンラク↓は薄い緑です。同じ肥料を与えているのにこの違いが出るのは不思議。過去のカザンラクの写真を見ると、真夏のバルコニーで枯死しそうになる以前は濃い緑色だったので、今は根っこが痛んでいるのかもしれません。今度の落葉期に鉢から出して根の状態を確認するとともに、土を入れ替える予定です。

One thing that does bother me is the difference in the colour of leaves.  The colour of Pioneer's leaves became darker since its arrival.  In contrast, Kazanlak's leaves are looking pale.  They get the same fertiliser.  On checking how Kazanlak looked in the past, I find that the leaves were dark green until it nearly died on the south-facing balcony where it got extremely hot and dry in the summer.  Perhaps the roots have not recovered fully.  I am going to check the roots in the forthcoming winter, and renew the soil, too.

今年の春に長く伸びた枝を５月に切り詰めました。その後、新芽が出始めているので成長する力はあるようです。

The branches grew vigorously in spring this year, and I pruned them last month.  I found a few new growths recently, which indicates that the plant wants to live.

今日は一日曇りで過ごしやすかったです。夕方散歩で通った草地の立派なトネリコの近くで座り込みました。

It was cloudy and cool today.  In the field we passed through during our evening walk, we sat down near a big ash tree to enjoy the pleasant air.

She was getting too comfortable and started the usual rolling.

Suddenly, she got up, and we resumed our walk.

久しぶりに会った懐かしい顔。小型白柴のミルクちゃんです。

We met a familiar face that we had not seen for some time.  A female, small White Shiba Inu, named "Milk".

今年８歳だそうで、１２歳のタイガとは４歳違いです。この子が公園デビューした当時はベビーカーに乗せられた赤ちゃんと一緒に散歩していました。最初はその子が弟だったのに、今は小学校６年生のお兄ちゃんになって、立場が逆転しています。

Milk will be 8 years old this year, 4 years younger than Taiga.  When she started coming to the park as a puppy, her mom was pushing a little boy in a cart.  The boy was then Milk's kid brother, but now aged 11, he is in his final year of elementary school and protects her as a big brother.

「日本昔話」にでも出て来そうな、独特の雰囲気をもった美人です。

She has a mysterious air about her.  In a children's story, she might be a beautiful young woman who was turned into a dog by a witch.

タイガは誰に匂いを嗅がれても平気なので、ミルクちゃんも臭いチェック。

Taiga allows anyone to take a sniff at her, so Milk started checking her scent.

コーネリアンチェリー・パイオニア Cornelian cherry 'Pioneer'

 おととい注文した苗が今日の午後２時-４時の時間帯に配達される予告を受けたので、午前中に鹿沼土と花の用土を買いに近所のJAへ行きました。ついでにミニトマト苗とベゴニアをゲット。

The cornelian cherry plant that I ordered two days ago was expected to arrive between 2-4 o'clock this afternoon.  So, I went to the nearby JA to get the two kinds of soil I always use.  Since I was there, I also got a cherry tomato plant and a pot of begonia.

リーガーベゴニアの仲間で、開花期間がとても長いそうです。

This is one of the Rieger begonias, whose flowering periods are said to be extremely long.

私はベゴニア苗を今まで買ったことが無かったのですが、鉢増しするために元の鉢から出してみてビックリ。苗は数本のプラスチック支柱でサポートされてこぢんまりした外観になっていたことが分かりました。それを鉢から出したとたん、数本の茎があちこちの方角に倒れ始めて収集がつかないほど。何とか大きな鉢に詰め込んだあと、付属の支柱を全部使って茎を支えましたが、だいぶ開帳型に変身しました。急に苗が大きく立派になりました。

I have never had a begonia plant before, not even the primitive type with tiny flowers.  When I took the plant out of the original pot, I was surprised to see that the stems had been supported by several plastic sticks, which made the whole plant look compact.  So, the moment I held the root system in my hand, the large stems began to part from each other.  I somehow managed to repot the plant in a larger pot, with the plant looking much more open.  It looked as if it had grown large in an instant.

ずっと眺めているうちに愛着がわいてきました。ワクワクしながらこの苗を眺めていると、午後に配達予定のコーネリアンチェリー苗を余裕で待つことができました。

As I kept looking at the plant, I began to like it more and more.  In this happy state, I was able to wait for the arrival of the cornelian cherry plant without getting impatient.

午後になって、その苗が届きました。コーネリアンチェリーの「パイオニア」で、入手できるとは思ってもいなかった品種です。そもそも、20年くらい前にコーネリアンチェリーが巧みなマーケティングで人気になったものの、あっという間に注目されなくなり、苗の販売業者はコーネリアンチェリーから撤退の一途を辿ったという印象です。現在、かろうじて「ショリコ」などを載せているショップはありますが、大実のパイオニアはどこも在庫なしです。それが偶然、セールで販売されているのを見て迷わず注文しました。既に育てている「カザンラク」は自家結実する品種ですが、他品種もあれば安心です。パイオニアはカザンラクほどではないけど大実で、海外のサイトによると、完熟すると種を取り出しやすくなるとのことです。一方、トルコ産のコーネリアンチェリーのジャムは種が入ったままの実だそうで（それではコンポートと言ったほうが正確）、よほど粘核性なのがうかがえます。それが、種を取り出しやすいというなら、本当のジャムを作れるはずです。

In the afternoon, the plant was delivered.  This is 'Pioneer', the variety that seemed impossible to obtain.  More than 15 years ago, plant sellers introduced cornelian cherries into Japan with clever marketing.  A lot of gardeners jumped at the opportunity to get these trees.  However, the popularity disappeared just as quickly as it was created.  Since then, shops have been fast getting out of cornelian cherries, and only one or two varieties such as Jolico are still left in stock.  As to Pioneer, it has completely disappeared, since it was one of the popular varieties for the larger fruits.  However, to my great surprise, I happened to see Pioneer on sale, and I immediately placed an order.  Now, the fruits of Pioneer may not be as large as those of Kazanlak, but, according to an overseas site, the stone comes off easily when the fruit is fully ripe.  This, to me, is a great advantage.  Without stones, I would be able to make really nice jam or smoothy.

これがその苗。小さく見えても、セールで800円だったので、苗の希少性も考慮すると、私にはエクセレントバリューに思えます。

This is the plant.  It may look small but, considering it was priced only 800 yen on sale and the near impossibility to get this variety now, it represents an excellent value to me.

I planted it in a 30cm diameter pot with slits at the bottom for good drainage.

こちら↓は２年前に買ったカザンラク。この秋までに、来年用の蕾を是非見たいものです。

This is Kazanlak that I bought 2 years ago.  I would love to find flower buds for next year, by the end of this summer.

新苗を植え付けてすっかり安心。ジッとガマンで待っていたタイガと公園へ行きました。

Having planted the new tree, I felt relieved and took Taiga to the park, feeling grateful for her patience.

散々歩き回ったあと、公園出口の広場でタイガが座り込み。散歩を待たされた分、ワガママを通せると感知しているようです。

After ambling through the park, we came to the field near the exit.  It seems Taiga had a sense of entitlement for having waited long for the afternoon walk, and she sat down refusing to go home yet.

急にスリゴロまで始めました。

She even started rolling over the grass.

リンゴなど Apple trees etc

 リンゴのグラニースミスが咲いています。昨日、今日と良い天気のおかげです。

Flowers on the Granny Smith tree, thanks to the fine weather yesterday and today.

蕾と花との混合状態が綺麗です。

This is my favourite phase with pink buds and open flowers.

蕾の集合体はたくさんあるので、あと数日は見て楽しめそうです。

There are a lot of flower bud clusters, so I should be able to enjoy watching them develop for several days.

こちらは赤実リンゴの「紅の夢」。天気予報では晴れが続くようなので、今週末までには開花するでしょう。

This is the red-fleshed variety called Kurenai-no-Yume.   According to the forecast, we can expect dry weather for about a week, so these red buds should start opening by the end of this week.

去年、バルコニーが暑すぎて枯れそうになったコーネリアンチェリーのカザンラク。夏の途中から庭に降ろして日陰で養生させたので枯死は回避できました。

This is cornelian cherry, Kazanlak.  The tree nearly died on the balcony last summer because it was too hot.  I brought it down and kept it in half shade ever since.

とても健康そうな葉っぱです。今年は栽培３年目なので、是非この秋までには来年用の蕾が確認できると嬉しいです。

The new leaves look healthy and beautiful.  This is the 3rd year of growing, and I am hoping to see flower buds for next year, by the end of this summer.

これはラズベリーのルビービューティー。種無しスダチの根元に植えたのを、タイガが何度もいたずらして引っこ抜いていました。５本あった地上部のうち１本はタイガに根っこ付近を齧られてアウト。さらに２本はこの場所に植え付けたあと復活することもなく枯れました。残ったのはこの２本。何とか徐々に増やしたいです。

This is raspberry, Ruby Beauty.  I took it out of a pot and planted it under a citrus tree last autumn, hoping to grow the bush bigger.  During winter, Taiga dug it out several times in spite of my replanting it with care.  Of the 5 stems, one was bitten off near the root.  After replanting in this spot, two other stems died and never budded.  These remaining two are precious and I hope there will be new shoots in due course.

西洋サンシュユとフィンガーライム Kazanlak and Finger Lime

 西洋サンシュユのカザンラクは、夏は灼熱の砂漠と化する2階バルコニーで葉っぱが茶色く干からびたので庭に降ろしてありました。一旦、葉が全て無くなったあと、新たな葉が出始めています。うちのバルコニーで元気に生き延びられるのは、ナツメ、オリーブ、パッションフルーツくらいです。地中海・中東などが原産のケイパーでさえ今年は疲労気味で、花のあとの実は生らないほどです。

Kazanlak (cornelian cherry) lost all its leaves due to overheating on the upstairs balcony.  Since then, it has been placed on the ground and new leaves have started to come out.  During the summer, the only plants that can survive on my balcony are the olive, the jujube and the passion fruit plant.  Even the caper is barely surviving this summer, although last year, it produced some fruits after flowering but not this year.

結局、今年は来年用の花芽なしです。ネット上の情報では、７-８月に花芽の分化が起きる、というような情報がありますが、この苗の場合４月の成長以降から葉っぱ芽と決まっていました（ヤケクソ感がにじむ）。

Looking at the new leaves coming out of the buds, it is clear that the plant has no flower buds for next year.  On the internet, you can find articles saying that flower buds start to appear during July and August, but my plant's buds have always been like this after the first growth in April.  So, the fate had been determined no matter how much I gazed at the plant wishing to find potential flower buds.

フィンガーライムは最近の雨で水やりを適当にしていたため、実が熟していることに気付きませんでした。

ダラムズエメラルドには大きな実が１個だけついていましたが、数日見ていないうちに落ちて腐っていた。

We have had a few weeks of sporadic heavy rains and I have enjoyed a break in watering the plants in the garden.  It also meant that I have not observed changes in them.  As a result, some of the fruits had matured and gone rotten.

The only fruit on Daram's Emerald had already fallen off the tree.

ニューイエローも過熟で茶色くなっているのが１個あります。

ミアローズは大小さまざまな実があちこちについています。

I have been picking some of Mia Rose fruits but it still has quite a few left.

適当に数個とってみました。左からニューイエロー、パープルブリス、ミアローズ、実生の白。実生の苗は数年前にオクで「赤実」として買ったものが、実際に実がなってみると白でした。でも、毎年確実に数個の実を提供してくれる有難い苗です。

I picked these to see how they taste.  From left, New Yellow, Purple Bliss, Mia Rose, and white seedling.  I have had the white seedling plant for several years now and it is a very reliable producer.

半割にしてみると、色の違いが分からない。切り口をカメラに向けるために手こずっているうちに、自然に粒があふれ出してきたので、熟してはいるようです。

When I cut them in halves, there was almost no difference in colour.  At least, the fruits appear to be mature, since the flesh oozed out naturally.

ニューイエローは黄色くないし、パープルブリスはピンク系でさえない。

The New Yellow is not yellow, while the Purple Bliss is not even pinkish.

ミアローズが僅かに他の実とは違う色かな、という程度。品種ものは味も香りも特徴がないです。香が一番良いと感じるのは実生のほうです。

Mia Rose looks only slightly coloured but only around the core.  There was no difference in flavour or taste among them, except that the white seedling's flavour was the best.
