ダークチェリーのショートケーキ Dark Cherry Shortcake

 缶詰のダークチェリーをフィリングにしたショートケーキです。トップの飾り用には自家栽培のラズベリーを使っています。ジョーン・スクワイアは、今年は秋果のほうが実生りが良くて、今も幼果が順次色づいています。11月末まで日中の気温が20度前後だったことが貢献しているような気がします。

ラズベリー Raspberry

 ラズベリーのジョーン・スクワイアが毎日細々と熟しています。固まって熟していると、そこだけ明りがついたようで綺麗です。

Raspberry 'Joan Squire' is continuing to ripen.  A cluster like this looks like little lanterns.

Joan Squire's fruits are large but the flowers are inconspicuous.

今日味見した中で、これが一番美味しかった。甘味、酸味ともに濃厚で秋果ならではの食味。

Of all the berries I ate today, this one was the best - strong sweetness matched by tart taste.

タイガはオヤツとお肉にしか興味なし。

Taiga is only interested in treats and meat.

地植えにした大実柚子に、２年前にモロを、去年はミネオラを、それぞれ２か所ずつ高接ぎしました。今年はこれらの各枝に１個ずつ実が生っています。

I grafted 2 twigs each of Moro and Mineora on Yuzu over the last 2 years.  Now they are starting to fruit.

で、これが大実柚子苗で実は２個。地元JAで30cmほどの挿し木苗が実着きで売られていたのを育てたものです。柑橘類のジャムは柚子が一番好きなので、これからもっと沢山生って欲しいです。

And, this is the Yuzu plant, barely 1 meter tall as yet.  Yuzu has so many uses - for savoury and sweets, as well as for fragrant bath.

ベークウェルタルト Bakewell Tart

 ローガンベリーのワイマテが収穫時期に入っているので、タルトに活用しました。タルトの底にワイマテで作ったジャムを敷いて、飾りには新鮮なベリーを使ってあります。

Loganberry, "Waimate", is in season right now, so I made a bakewell tart.  The berries are used in the jam and for garnish.

パッションフルーツ棚の延長 Extension to passion fruit scaffolding

 パッションフルーツの生育が良すぎてキウイ棚だけでは足りない状況です。そこで、園芸用の2.1mの支柱を使って物干し竿に橋掛けしました。これで面積が激増です。その影響で真下に置いてある大雪棗が半日陰になる予定ですが、大実系のナツメは鉢植えではどうも実が着きにくいので大したロスにはならないでしょう。

The existing structure for the passion fruit plant is fast becoming too small.  So, I made a bridge between the passion fruit scaffolding and the gate-looking structure beyond (it is a part of the structure for hanging out laundry).  As a result, the passion fruit scaffolding has expanded significantly.

この写真の右の実は今年の第一花からのもの。すでにL卵よりも大きいです。もう少ししたら実の形状が三角っぽく突っ張って、その後に果皮が黒く色づくでしょう。

The fruit on the right is from the first flower of this year.  It is already much larger than an L-sized chicken egg.

蕾の出方は節の間が詰まっていて、その分豊作になりそう。

The distance between flowers is very short, which means that a vine is packed with flowers.

毎日の授粉作業が大変です。最近までの猛暑のような日光のなかでの作業は、手の甲がヤケドしそうなほどでした。かといって、試しに一輪の花を授粉しないでその後の様子を見たら翌日には干からびたので、人口授粉は必須です。

We had a spell of very hot weather recently and it was hard work to pollinate - the back of my hands felt burning under the intense sun.

家の北側で、決して日光に恵まれていませんが良く育ちます。ツルは数メートルに伸びて、一株からとは思えないくらい繁茂しています。

It is hard to believe that all this is from just one cluster/stock - the canes simply kept growing.  Even though this is on the northside of my house, the plant does not seem to suffer from the lack of direct sun.

さっそく試食。激スッパでした。去年の実がまだ冷凍庫にあるので早く消費しなければ。

They look tempting, but the taste is quite tart.  This variety is suitable for cooking.

フェイジョアが満開。この写真だけを見ると、まるでのどかな農園で暮らしているかのような景色ですが、夕方の逆光線の関係で背景がボケただけです。

Feijoa plants are in full bloom.  They are such attractive flowers with a hint of tropics.

フェイジョアなど Miscellaneous

 園芸用の支柱を買いに近所のJAへ行ったら、デザートライムの接ぎ木苗が売られていました。立派な苗ですが、買う人いるのでしょうか。

I went to the gardening shop nearby to get some materials this afternoon, when I saw 'desert lime' grafted plants.  Quite healthy-looking, decent plants, but I wonder if there are people interested enough to buy.

値段は結構リーズナブルです。

The price is quite reasonable at 1,800 yen, considering the size of the plants.

フェイジョアがもう咲き始める季節のようです。うちに残っている品種は、アポロ、ニキタ、ウィキトウです。実の形状を見ずに果肉だけをブライドテイスティングしたら、私には違いが分からないほど似ていますが、せめて３品種を保持しているほうが実着きが良いです。

The feijoa (a.k.a. pineapple guava) plants in my garden are starting to flower.  I have 3 varieties: Apollo, Nikita and Wiki Tu.

ローガンベリーのワイマテが去年に増して豊作になりそうです。去年の実が一部まだ冷凍庫に残っているので、そのうち消費しなければ。

The loganberry plant, a variety called Waimate, is doing well.  This variety is so prolific that I still have some of last year's crop in my freezer.

耐寒性・耐暑性はブラックベリー並みに強いので便利な品種です。

Also, this variety is super resistant against both cold and hot weather, like blackberries.  

タイガの換毛期が始まりました。昨日のシャンプーのあと、ちょっと歩いただけで毛が柱のような塊りで浮き上がってきます。

Taiga has started to moult.  I shampooed her yesterday and, since then, lumps of loose hair rise to the surface as she walks and moves about.

玄関の外で延々とブラッシングすると蚊に襲われるので、中へ移動。ファーミネーターは優秀です。これ１本で、背中の長い毛から脚の数ミリの毛までゴッソリ取れます。

We moved inside the porch for brushing, since mosquitos are about outside.  The moulting period has only started and I shall be busy brushing her for the next 2 months.

これから２か月ちかく、抜け毛で廊下がザラザラします。スリッパの足で歩くと、シュルシュル音がするほどです（毎日掃除しても）。

カラカラ、ナバホなど Cara Cara, Navaho etc

 数年前に地植えにして以来、１個しか収穫したことのないカラカラに今年はちゃんと実が生りそうです。普通のネーブルより小ぶりだけど、ピンクの果肉はとても甘かったので楽しみです。

The Cara Cara plant with flowers starting to bloom.  This tree produced one fruit the year I planted it in the garden but, since then, no flowers at all.  So, I am looking forward to picking fruits next spring.

ブラックベリーのナバホが咲き始めました。道路側のフェンスに絡ませてあります。ケインは１本しかありませんが、東向きなので朝一の日光を浴びてよく育っています。YouTubeではスイス人のひとが、ナバホを直立形に仕立てて鈴なりにしていました。このフェンスは来年以降はハンザに利用したいので、他に移して直立式を試す予定です。

Navaho blackberry plant (just one cane) with flowers.  Unfortunately, the Osage plant died out last summer and this is the only blackberry left.

The flowers are pale pink (although they look white in the pictures) and very pretty.

数か月前にスーパーで買った２個入りのユリ根を、１個は食してもう１個は分解して鉢に植えておきました。現在一か所にだけ芽が出ています。まるでミニチュアのパイナップルのクラウン。

I planted one of the edible lily bulbs that I bought in the supermarket some months ago and now a new shoot is coming out.  It is currently looking like a miniature pineapple crown.

つい先日届いたハマナス系のハンザに蕾が出始めています。この蕾を先頭に、まだ硬い蕾が他に３つあります。

The Rugosa Hansa that arrived recently has been growing new branches and I can count at least 4 flower buds now.  I am so excited and looking forward to seeing the flowers.

私がハンザの蕾で大感激していると、退屈したタイガが寄ってきました。

As I was so absorbed with Hansa, Taiga approached me to get attention.

ワンコはブサイほど可愛い。タイガはいろんな顔で毎日私を笑わせてくれます。でも、もう少し痩せなければ。おととい狂犬病のチックンに連れて行きましたが、体重は24.9kgでした。

Taiga may not be the best looking pooch in the world, but any of her expressions are endearing to me.  However, she must slim down - I took her to the vet 2 days ago for a rabies shot and was told that she weighed 24.9kg.

公園で At the park

 今朝は大幅に寝坊したのでドッグランへは行かずに四中横の草地をブラブラ歩いていました。そこを通りかかった初対面の子。ラブラドゥードルとビションフリーゼのミックスだそうで、名前は「ポンズ」君、もうすぐ１歳になる男の子です。

物怖じしない性格の子で、タイガとプロレスが始まりました。最初はポンズ君ママと一緒に楽しく眺めていたのですが、延々と続きそうなので途中からカメラを出しました。なのでいきなりタイガがアゴでポンズ君を抑えつけているところ。

A new face: Labradoodle and Bichon Frize mix, named 'Ponzu'.  He will be one year old in a few days.  Ponzu and Taiga started wrestling and his mom and I were at first just watching it, encouraging the whole time.  As it seemed to go on forever, I took out my camera and started taking pictures. Thus, they are already in the thick of it.

そこへ近所のコタロウが到着。タイガは急に態度を変えて甘えモードです。

There arrives Kotarou, my neighbour's Labrador-Shiba mix.  Taiga suddenly changes her demeanour and behaves like a young girl.

As a 13-year old male, Kotarou tries to put Ponzu in his position.

ポンズ君は難なくコタと挨拶できました。ポンズ君はドッグランを積極的に利用しているそうなので、犬社会のマナーをしっかり身につけているようです。

Ponzu is a frequent user of the dog park and seems to know how to behave in front of an older, large male dog.

ポンズ君に敬意を表してもらってコタも満足そうです。

帰宅して昼ごはんの後に退屈顔のタイガ。私は甲斐犬のこの光の当たりかたが最も気に入っています。何とはなしに侘しい雰囲気。

去年の暮から庭仕事をさぼっていたので、今日こそはと外に出ました。タイガは家の中がよほど退屈らしく、すっとんで出てきます。私がオレンジの木の剪定や放置してあった切り枝を束ねている間、働きぶりを監督。

I had a lot of unfinished work in my garden since autumn last year and decided to tidy up the cut branches, with Taiga watching my work.

昨日やっと植えつけたラズベリーのルビービューティー苗。新品の９号菊鉢です。

The new raspberry plants (Ruby Beauty, aka, Shortcake) that arrived a few days ago.

作業にかなり時間がかかったので、またしても退屈したタイガは門の手前にうずくまって道行く人たちを眺めていたようです。5時近くにやっと作業を終えて近づくと、このぶりっ子（死語）顔で私を見上げました。私に対するこの表情の効果をよーく知っているタイガです。

When I finally finished my work, I noticed Taiga sitting close to the gate - she was watching the world go by from her position.  Many of my neighbours, when they pass by, talk to Taiga and she enjoys her popularity.  Now she is looking up with a forlorn face - she is well aware of the effect it produces on me.

まるでこの上なく不幸な身の上のワンコを演じています。それにしても、何で地べたにうずくまるのか？

She looks like an abandoned, saddest pooch in this entire world, curled up on the ground.  By the way, ever heard of 'personal hygiene'?
