早脆王ナツメ Jujube plant

去年の12月12日に届いた「七月早脆王」ナツメの苗は、5月に芽吹いた枝が、長いものでも10センチもない状態でずっと来ましたが、最近どんどん枯れてきました。

The jujube plant that arrived in December last year is getting dry every day.

この時期の天候から、水不足が原因ということはなさそうです。また、土は軽石と鹿沼土を多く配合してあるので、水はけはバツグンです。

The new shoots never got longer than 10cm, and the leaves are curling up.

下の方のも例外なくカリカリ寸前です。

もう何か月も眺めてきたので、こうなったら「掘り出してみりゃ分かる！」と決心しました。その結果が、コレ↓。

After months of watching, I decided to pull the plant out of the soil to see the state of the roots.

The result was startling.

生きた細根がありません。ということは、5月に新梢が伸び出したのは、主幹に蓄積されていた栄養を使い果たしながらの動きだったので、それ以降は根っこから栄養を補給されなかったので枯れたのでしょう。

This is really disgusting.

ちなみに、12月12日に苗が届いたときの状態はコレ↓でした。白い毛根は皆無で、そのとき有った細い根は冬の間に分解されたようです。

There was not a single white active root - what there were must have melted during the winter months.

昨夜のうちにメールでお店に状況を説明したところ、今日さっそくの返答があり、今度の秋に代替苗を送っていただけるとのことで、大変安心しました。早脆王ナツメは、海外サイトの写真をいろいろ見ながら、いつか収穫できることをとても楽しみにしていた品種なので、是非育ててみたいです。お店の迅速かつ誠意ある対応に感謝、感謝です。

Follow-up:

I contacted the online shop from whom I bought the above plant last night.  They immediately responded to me today saying that 'This variety is out of stock right now but new plants will be coming in this autumn, at which time they will send me the replacement plant.'  Needless to say, I am relieved and grateful for their sincere response.
