2年前の５月に買った皇帝棗は、これまで10号ロングスリット鉢に植わっていましたが、根っこがギチギチで限界にきていました。今年からは地植えにします。以前はスモモに力を入れていたけど、冬に石灰硫黄合剤をハケ塗りするのが年齢的にきつくなってきていました。冬に消毒しても、夏には夏の問題であるハダニが発生して葉っぱが銀色になってしまいます。そこで、今後はハダニの心配がない棗に切り替えることにしました。
まずは試しに皇帝だけを地植えにしてみました。他の苗は去年が初年度だったので、今年１年は10号鉢のままでいきます。うちの庭があるのは、片方の隣地とは2m近い段差、もう一方の隣地とは1m以上の段差がある坂です。しかも、棗を地植えにするところはうちの敷地の中でもさらに一段凹んだ状態で、ある人は「プールみたい」と形容したほどです。そのプール内で育てて、かつ、苗の周りを定期的にスコップで掘り起こして、根っこの広がりを抑制するつもりです。
（向こうに見える無数の鉢は、立派に育ったオニユリのムカゴがとてつもなく沢山できて、それらを全部真面目に植えたら鉢だらけになったものです。）
Since I bought this Emperor (I think it is 'Li', outside of Japan) jujube tree in May 2024, it has been growing in a 30cm diameter pot which has become too tight for the roots. So, I decided to plant it in the ground. I used to grow plum trees in my garden but using the lime sulphur mixture during winter was getting too onerous for me. Moreover, the mixture cannot prevent spider mites in the summer, which causes leaves to turn silver. Therefore, I am giving up the plum trees and planning to switch to jujube trees - no more spider mites or the need to use the lime sulphur mixture.
To see how it goes, I am starting with just one tree. The other jujube trees were bought last year, and they can stay in their 30cm pots for one more year. As to the spreading of roots, my garden is in a peculiar position. On one side, there is nearly 2m level difference between the neighbour's ground and mine, and on the other, more than 1m difference (our houses stand on a slope). Moreover, the area I will be growing jujube trees is about 50cm lower than the rest of my garden/ground, so much so that a friend described it as 'looking like a swimming pool'.
(The numerous pots in the background are full of bulbils from the rare spotless Tiger Lilies. I collected all the bulbils last summer and ended up with so many pots.)
