ナツメひこばえ等 Jujube sucker etc

 2, 3日前に気付いたのですが、今年の冬に買った大雪棗にヒコバエが出てきました。この苗は大雪棗 No. 2です。去年の暮に届いた大雪棗の苗があまりにも貧相だったので、今年になって他のお店から注文したものです。期待に反してエンピツ程度のヒョロ苗がきました（最初の苗はエンピツより細かったので、改善）。その台木からのヒコバエなので、栄養をそちらに持っていかれたくないし、そもそもヒコバエはほぼ例外なく勢いが強い。ということで、大きなほうを取り出してみることにしました。小さいほうは本体に近すぎるので、そのうちむしり取ります。

A few days ago, I noticed a sucker coming out of the root stock of Big Snow Jujube.  This tree is the second Big Snow Jujube, and I bought it early this year from another shop, having been hugely disappointed with the first one that I got late last year.  This second one was again a disappointment - the tree trunk being barely bigger than a pencil (however, the first one was way thinner than a pencil, so this one WAS an improvement on the other one).  

Back to this sucker, it would be unfair to leave it as it is.  The grafted tree is already fragile, and this sucker will become a huge competition.  So, I decided to dig it out.  I was curious to see the state of the sucker.  (The smaller one will be simply removed later, since it is too close to the parent.)

ヒコバエは浅いところの根っこから出るイメージを持っていましたが、かなり掘り下げてやっと根元にたどり着きました。

I had imagined that the sucker came out of a root close to the surface of the soil.  In fact, I had to keep digging to get to the bottom.

元の状態と比べてだいぶ浅植えにしました。地上に露出した白っぽい部分が、日に当たるうちに茎として育ち始めるかどうか、実験です。

I replanted it at a shallow level compared to the original depth.  I am experimenting to see if the pale part of the stem now exposed above the soil would turn into a part of the trunk.

今年もトマトを育てています。今まではミニトマトばかりでしたが、今年初めて「中粒」品種の苗を買ってみました。しかも、完熟でオレンジ色になるというのも初めてです。

The tomato plant that I bought in spring is growing vigorously.  This year, I am growing 'medium-sized' tomatoes for the first time, instead of cherry tomatoes.  Also, this is the first tomato variety with orange fruits.

去年のミニトマトは自家製液肥だけで良く育ったので、今年も同じことをやっています。液肥は、草むしりで出た屑と台所の生ごみが原料ですが、良く育つし、猛暑の間 毎日与えても根腐れしませんでした。植わっている鉢は10号ロングスリット鉢で、朝・夕の水やりでも直ぐに受け皿が空になります。

The cherry tomato plant that I had last year grew well by home-made liquid fertiliser only, so I am doing the same this year.  The raw material for the liquid fertiliser consists of garden weeds and kitchen garbage.  The tomato plant last year thrived on this fertiliser.  Moreover, I kept giving the fertiliser every day even through the hottest months of the summer, but the roots showed no sign of damage.  The pot I use is 30cm diameter and I have to water the plant twice a day.  Even then, the saucer under the pot dries up quickly.

I decided to pick the most orange-looking fruit to see the state of maturity.

連日の雨で裂果が見られます。２日ほど追熟させてから味見することにしました。

We are in the middle of the rainy season and the fruit shows a crack.  I will leave it for a few days to let it ripen off the tree before tasting.

紅筋山百合は４輪とも開花して、花の香りが強烈です。その背後にあるのは素芯オニユリ。

All the four flowers on the Red Yamayuri have opened, and the perfume is really powerful.  The pot behind the Yamayuri contains a rare variety of Tiger Lily - its flowers are without dark spots.

蕾が徐々に色づいてきました。

日本ナツメ Japanese jujube

今日は曇りの予報とは異なり一日中雨で、草木の世話をすることなし。２階バルコニーの日本ナツメのうち１本の幼果が雨水を吸収してよく育っています。これは24年の夏に買った日本ナツメの大苗からのヒコバエで、初年度の去年 たくさんの実を着けたので動画まで撮った個体です。今年も豊産性を発揮しています。

It rained all day today, although the forecast had been a 'cloudy day'.  The rain seems to be good for the young fruits of a Japanese jujube plant.  This is one of the 3 suckers that came out of the pot when I bought a large Japanese jujube tree in summer 2024.  In its initial year of growth in 2025, it produced a lot of fruits.  So much so that I made a video to show the ripe fruits on this plant.  This year again, the tree is proving to be prolific.

地上60cmくらいのところで摘心してありますが、そこから枝垂れた樹形で幼果が数珠状。

In spring last year, cut the tree trunk at about 60cm above ground.  Branches (mostly annual branches) are hanging from the top like a weeping tree.  Young fruits are lined up like a string of beads.

うちにある８本の品種ものの幼果はまだまだ小さいのに、この苗のは成長が早いです。完熟すると、しっかりと酸味もあるし果汁も十分でとても美味しい。唯一の難点は、実のサイズが小さい。

I have 8 known varieties of jujube, but their fruit setting is far behind, in contrast to this tree's progress.  This tree produces sweet and juicy fruits with some tartness (I value acidity in jujube fruits).  They are almost perfect fruits, except the small size.

紅筋山百合（続） Red Yamayuri cont.

 紅筋山百合の2本植わっているうち、草丈が短いほうの２輪目の花が今朝咲き始めました。昨夜は雨の予報だったので、花が痛まないよう昨日の夕方のうちに軒下に鉢を移動させておきました。

Of the two Red Yamayuri lilies in a pot, the shorter plant's second flower started opening this morning.  As it was forecast to rain last night, I moved the pot to under the balcony so that the flowers would not get damaged by rain.

夕方散歩から帰った７時過ぎのようす。向こう一週間のあいだ、一日のうち何時間かは雨が降る予報なので、２本とも開花が終わるまでこの場所に置きます。

This is how they looked when we came home from our evening walk, after 7 p.m.  

According to the forecast, it will rain for several hours every day next week.  So, this pot will stay here until all the 4 flowers are gone.

紅筋ヤマユリ Red Yamayuri

 去年買った紅筋山百合2本のうち、もう一本も今朝開花しました。こちらは最初に開花したものより背が低いです。花が、鉢の向こうにある他の植物の枝に埋まっているので、

Of the two Red Yamayuri plants that I bought last summer, the other one started blooming this morning.  This plant is much shorter in height than the other one.  Its flower was buried among the branches of another plant behind, so I turned the pot around

この個体の花の筋は、文句なしの紅筋です。

The red streaks of this plant are much darker than those of the other one.

これは昨日開花した、紅筋の薄いほう。２輪咲くと香りが強烈で、家の一番奥の部屋にいても開いた窓から匂いが入ってきます。

This is the other one which opened yesterday.  With two flowers open, the perfume is really powerful, and I can smell it through the window, even sitting in the room farthest from the plants.

昨日届いた静浜クコを植え付け。買った用土ではなく、庭土100%です。

I potted the goji berry plants that arrived yesterday, using only the garden soil rather than purchased soil mixture.

今日のルビービューティの収穫。今年はこれでほぼ終わりです。あとはジョーン・スクワイアを順次摘み取ります。

静浜クコ苗 Goji berry plants

 先週の金曜日に注文した静浜クコの苗が今朝到着しました。箱を受け取った瞬間、あまりの軽さに不安を覚えたのですが、

I ordered goji berry plants last Friday and they arrived this morning.  The moment I received and held the box in my hands, I felt uneasy.

まさか、こんなに小さい苗とは。。。。

Even then, I never expected such miniscule plants!

サイトの表示では「樹高約20cm」という表示でしたが、実物は10cmあるか無いか。あまりのショックで直ぐには植え付けする気にもなれず、明日まで放置することにしました。ちなみに、静浜クコというのは大実・多収品種だそうです。

On the shop's site, it said 'plant height about 20cm', but these are barely 10cm tall.  I was so dismayed that I could not motivate myself to repot them straight away - I am leaving them until tomorrow.  For the record, this is a variety that was selected and improved from wild goji berries growing on the coast of Shizuhama in Shizuoka Prefecture.  It is said to be prolific and produce large fruits.

そんなときに元気付けてくれたのはこれ。去年の夏に練馬の渋谷園芸で買った紅筋山百合。2本のうち、色の薄いほうが今朝 先に開花しました。

At least, I had a nice surprise this morning - one of the two Red Yamayuri that I bought last summer at a shop in Nerima started blooming.  Of the two, this plant's flower has lighter red streaks.

花の香りが強烈で、玄関ドアを開けたとたんに香りが襲ってきます。

The scent is so powerful that it hits my nostrils the moment I open the front door.

もう１本のほうも２-３日中に咲くでしょう。この個体の花は、もっとはっきりした紅筋が入ります。

The other one will start blooming within the next few days.  The flowers of this plant will have darker streaks.

こちらは今年の冬の間にヤフオクで買った紅筋山百合で、ピンクの花びらに赤い筋が入るタイプです。

This is another kind of Red Yamayuri - I bought it during last winter.  The petals are pink, with red streaks running through them.

ブルーベリー苗 Blueberry plants

 朝散歩で公園からの帰り道、地蔵さんの前を通りました。

On our way home from the Johoku Park, we passed by the jizo-san statues.

通るたびに新鮮な花が供えられています。

Every time we walk by, I see fresh flowers.

今朝の花は梅雨の花のアジサイ「墨田の花火」という品種だと思います。

This morning, the flowers were mainly hydrangea.  This one is a variety called 'Sumida no Hanabi' - which evokes the image of a firework flower just opening.

お地蔵さんとは細い道を挟んだ向こうにある屋敷林に映えている株からでしょう。

城北公園は都立の公園であるのに対し、この屋敷林は元は野菜畑だったものが一般に開放されている緑地で、練馬区の管理下にあります。草刈り作業が行われるのは年に数回だけなので、今は夏草がボウボウ。小学生が登校途中にショートカットで通る、獣道のような筋がついています。

The woodland is currently overgrown with weeds.  Whereas Johoku Park is managed by Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this woodland comes under Nerima Ward.  This place used to be a farmland but now made available for the general public.  Elementary school children go through this field as a shortcut on their way to and from school, leaving a narrow trail.

The fruit looks like something out of the Myrtaceae family, like a guava fruit.

今日は過ごしやすい気温だったので、近所のJAを覗いてみました。そこでつい誘惑に負けたのが、これらのブルーベリー苗。ブルーベリーは過去に何度か挫折しているので、もう手を出さないと決めていたのですが、大粒の実が生っているのと値段がまた魅力的でした（税込みで1,070円）。左から、「クーパー」と「ビロキシー」。いずれも初めて聞く名前です。

Today was just the right temperature to spend outside, so I visited the JA nearby where I saw these blueberry plants and could not resist.  Now, I have tried and failed growing blueberries a few times in the past, which made me determined never to try again.  However, the berries on these plants were so large and inviting.  The price was also attractive (1,070 yen each, inclusive of tax).  So, from left to right, 'Cooper' and 'Biloxi'.  Both names are new to me, since I have been out of blueberries for so long.

サザン系の中で「最大級」と聞くと、期待してしまいました。

It says 'One of the largest varieties among Southern Highbush blueberries - I like the sound of it.

今のところ、実の大きさはこちらのほうが上です。

Currently, the berries of this variety are larger than those of Cooper.

素焼き鉢に植えつけました。元の鉢が小さかったので、当分これで大丈夫だと思います。来年の３月に植え替えする予定です。
For now, I am using these clay pots which are large enough for the root system of both plants.  I plan to repot them in larger containers in March next year.
