スーパーからの帰りに近所のJAを覗いてみたら、これ↓が入荷したところでした。ノイバラの苗です。
On my way home from the supermarket, I dropped into the nearby JA plant shop and saw this just arrived - a Rosa multiflora.
New shoots are coming out thick and fast.
根元の太さにびっくり、3年生くらいでしょうか。これが税込みで1,500円。ローズヒップを採るために、適当なノイバラ苗を見かけたら欲しいと以前から思っていたところなので連れ帰りました。
Moreover, I was surprised at the size of the trunk which looked like about 3 years old. I always wanted a Rosa multiflora so that I could harvest rose hips, only if I could find a decent plant. This one at 1,500 yen seemed a good find.
青い矢印で示した箇所以外、トゲに関する言及がないのが不可解。普通はトゲだらけのノイバラ苗にとって、「トゲ無し」の特性は付加価値になります。なのに「トゲナシノイバラ」をうたった表示はありません。３行目の「環境による違いあります」で保険をかけているようなので、実際に育ててみないと断言できないようです。
The line indicated by the blue arrow says, 'no thorns coming out', and yet, the labels do not declare the plant to be a 'thornless' Rosa multiflora. Normally, these are very thorny plants, so if a Rosa multiflora is thornless, that is a value added.
Curiously, the line directly underneath in black says 'it could be affected by the growing environment' - hedging! So, I have to take the chance.
ではその間 現物をよ～く観察してみると、半木質化した茎にはトゲが見当たりません。ちょっと希望が湧いてきます。
At least, looking closely at the half-green stems, I do not see a single thorn. I am feeling a little optimistic.
ポットから出してみると、モミガラ交じりの柔らかい土に、まあまあ満足な量の根っこが出ていました。たぶん、去年の夏までは圃場で伸び伸び育っていたものを、出荷に向けて秋頃に根切りされ今の小さなポットに鉢上げ、地上部は鬼剪定されたものだと思います。
I took the plant out of the plastic pot and saw healthy looking roots. Probably, this plant had been growing freely in a field until last summer. The roots were cut so as to fit into the tiny plastic pot, while the stems were cut down almost to the ground.
苗の状態から、一旦植え付けたあとは勢いよく育ちそうなので10号菊鉢に植えました。中学の頃、学校の近くの河原でノイバラが地下茎を通して群生していたのを思いだして、植え付けの土には軽石を混ぜ込みました。
This plant will likely grow robustly once it is planted, so I used a 30cm diameter pot which might look a little too large for now. As to the soil, I added pumice to make it lean. I used to see a lot of these roses on the riverbank near my junior high school where the soil was very poor, and yet the plants multiplied through underground stems.
先日作ったブラッドオレンジのジャムがとても美味しかったので、第２弾を作りました。前回同様、ローゼルの種を別鍋で煮てペクチンを抽出して加えたら直ぐに固まりました。

もう空き瓶が無くなったので、ジャム作りはこれで最後です。左と中央の瓶詰は煮沸消毒し、右のは冷蔵庫行きです。
I made another batch of blood orange jam today. The jam I made the other day tasted so good that I wanted to preserve them while the oranges were still fresh. As previously, I extracted pectin out of frozen roselle seeds, and the jam thickened in no time. Having run out of empty jam jars, this will be the last of the season.
