It was another hot and humid day starting from the morning. We walked in the neighbouring district (6-chome), where we saw my favourite zelkova tree on top of a hill. It belongs to a farmhouse - one of the few farmers still surviving in our area. An old tree standing alone on top of a hill, it looks majestic. If this were in England, there would be a Tree Preservation Order placed by the local government, and not even the owner of the house would be allowed to fell it without permission. Sadly, in the 29 years of my living in this area, I have seen many such ancient trees cut down for the sake of redevelopment. I hope this tree will be protected by the owner for many years to come.
In the same 6-chome, there was an apple tree that I wanted to check. There used to be a house in this plot of land but, after the previous owner passed away, the house was demolished, and the land is now being used as a parking lot. Where it used to be the back of the house, there are several trees squeezed in a tiny space. One of them is an apple tree.
The apple tree stands in the shade of the neighbouring house and sandwiched by two evergreens. Only the top half of the tree is visible.
In spite of growing in such an unenviable environment, none of the leaves show the signs of red rust spots that you often see in apples and pears. Indeed, my red-flesh cooking apple suffers from this. Also, both of my apple trees are infested with spider mites, but no such problem can be spotted on this tree.
I think this tree is a cooking apple - probably Bramley. When I came to see this tree in August last year, most of the fruits had fallen as over-ripe apples, and the air smelt like cider. This tree gets no fertiliser, not even watering, and yet it produces steadily every year.

For our evening walk, we went to the Johoku Central Park. We were exhausted from heat of the day, and Taiga stopped walking the moment we arrived. So, we had a break in the woods near the entrance of the park.

After the break, I thought we were going further, but Taiga refused. Instead, she pulled me back to the field near the entrance, where she settled down.
From this spot, we could watch other dogs passing by in the distance, so Taiga was content to stay here enjoying the evening breeze.
