小さな友達 Little Friends

 公園に着くと、ちょうど小型黒柴のマル君もやった来たところでした。私がマル君の大ファンなのを知っているので、いつもタイガを素通りして私のところへ走ってきます。そして目の前で興奮ダンスを披露してくれます。タイガはぼーっとして見ているだけ。

When we arrived at the park, Maru, a small Black Shiba Inu, had also arrived.   Maru knows that I am a big fan of his, so he always dashes towards me, ignoring Taiga.  He then displays an enthusiastic welcome dance, with his ears pushed back and jumping like a spring-loaded toy.  Taiga simply stands there as if lost in thoughts.

マル君は柴犬には非常に珍しく、尻尾が巻くことはありません。歩くときはこのようにホウキのような、またはキツネのような尻尾を後ろに伸ばして歩きます。

Maru is unusual in that his tail does not coil like a Shiba Inu.  When he walks, he carries his tail like this - looking like a broom, or a fox tail.

そして、たまに太刀尾になります。

Sometimes, it becomes a sward tail.

柴犬かつ平静な心理状態のときに、このシッポの形は他に見たことありません。

I have never seen a tail like this in a Shiba Inu, when the dog is in a calm state.

今日は曇りで蒸し暑い日だったので、マル君はすっかり伸びてしまいました。

It was a muggy day today, and Maru was exhausted from the heat.

タイガが心配そうに近づいても、動けない。

Taiga approaches Maru to see if he was all right, but he cannot be bothered to respond.

近くに住むチワワのリンちゃんもやって来ました。体重が2kgにも満たない超小型のチワワですが、この犬種によくあるキャンキャン吠えることは全く無く、いつも落ち着いています。家の中では女王様しているそうです。
Lin, a chihuahua who lives near the park also arrives.  She is so tiny that she weighs less than 2kg.  However, she never barks like a chihuahua and stays calm in front of larger dogs.  Her mom tells me that she rules the place at home.

自分のことが話題の中心になっていると悟っているようで、ママに甘えだしました。

She sensed that she was the centre of our conversation and started trying to catch her mom's attention.

だっこして欲しいようですが、カワイイ瞬間を写真に収めるちょうど良い機会です。

She wanted to be picked up and, for me, it was a good photo opportunity as her mom kept her hanging on.

家の北側の通路に毎年勝手に出てくるヒメオウギ。本当は玄関前の陽当たり良好で土がフカフカの場所に生やしたかったのですが、すぐ消滅してしまいました。アヤメの仲間なのに、このカツカツの乾燥した場所が気に入っているようです。北側なので直射日光が当たるのは夕方のほんのわずかな時間だけですが、こぼれ種から増え続けています。

On the north side of my house, Freesia laxa  are in bloom.  Originally, I planted a pot of these in front of my porch, where it faces the east and the soil is moist and soft, but it disappeared after one season.  Instead, flowers started appearing on the north side a few years later, and from then on, they kept multiplying by spreading seeds.  They are supposed to belong to the iris family, yet they choose to live on this side of the house where it hardly gets direct sunlight, and where the soil is dry and tough.

雨水に頼るだけのカラカラの土なので、草丈は10cm未満のものも多いです。

They get only rainwater in this hard soil, so a lot of them are shorter than 10cm.

モミジの発芽苗です。以前拾ってきて忘れていた種を、ダメ元で冬の間にビニールポットに埋めておきました。１個だけ（写真左）普通の青葉のが混じっていたようです。

I found Japanese maple seeds in the cupboard that I had brought home from the park a few years ago.  I put them in pots during the winter, thinking that I had nothing to lose.  To my delight, some of them actually germinated.  One of them turned out to be a green-leaf variety (far left), and the other 3 are what I wanted - red maples.

３個の赤葉のうち、真ん中のこれを最終的に育てるかも。30cmくらいに育って葉っぱの形が安定してきたら決めます。

I only need one and, so far, I like the one in the middle.  However, I will make my choice when the plants are about 30cm tall, when the shape of leaves will be more stable.

フィンガーライムなど Finger lime etc

 数年前に育て始めたフィンガーライムの苗は、今はこの「ミアローズ」１株だけになってしまいました。根詰まりで葉っぱが黄色くなったあと、急速に衰弱するというパターンでした。この株も葉の色がだんだんと薄くなってきています。しかも、４-５月は開花時期のはずなのに、今年は全く花が出てきません。

When I started growing finger limes some years ago, I had several plants of different varieties.  Now, this 'Mia Rose' is the only survivor from my initial collection.  After 4-5 years in a 30cm pot, the leaves become yellowish, before starting to die.  The same thing seems to be happening to this tree, too.  The period April-May is supposed to be for flowering, but this plant has had no flowers this year.

もしかしたら、去年の秋に開花して幼果が越冬し、栄養がその幼果のために使われて、蕾どころではなかったのかも。現在、15個ほどの実が生っています。

However, the young fruits from last autumn flowering have been growing through winter, and that probably has proved to be too much of a burden to produce flowers.

実の大きさは十分なところまで育ちましたが、完熟のサインが分からないのが難点。親指と人差し指で摘んで多少でも弾力性があれば収穫時期かとも思えますが、いつまで経っても石のように硬い。

The young fruits have grown large enough, but it is difficult to tell when they are ready for harvesting.  When I try to squeeze a fruit between my index finger and thumb, it is rock hard.

手前のミアローズの向こう、濃い緑色の葉っぱをしたのがタヒチライム。

The plant with dark green leaves, the one beyond the finger lime tree, is Tahiti lime.

棒苗で買って今年が栽培３年目で、初開花の後おびただしい数の幼果が着きましたが、そのほとんどが落果してしまいました。

I bought this as a newly grafted tree, and this is the 3rd year of growing.  It flowered for the first time this spring, after which there were countless young fruits.  Now, almost all of them have fallen off - the tree is still too young.

先日買ったミニトマトの苗はミアローズのそばに置いています。雨水を吸って枝が伸びてきたので、バルコニーの手すりに紐でくくって釣り上げることにしました。支柱で支えると、いくら支柱があっても足りなくなり結局は支柱の林になるので、今年初めて釣り上げ方法を試すことにしました。バルコニーの東南の角に置くことで日当たりを確保しました。
The cherry tomato plant that I bought recently has been growing fast, thanks to the frequent warm rain.  This year, I am trying the method of hanging the branches with strings, instead of using supporting sticks.  Tomato branches grow so fast and so long, that I always end up with a forest of supporting sticks.  The pot is placed in the east-south corner, so the plant will get full sun.

今日も30℃超えの蒸し暑い日でした。タイガは玄関の冷たいタイルの上で、ふて寝。

It was another hot and humid day, with the maximum temperature exceeding 30℃.  Taiga was lying flat on the cool tiles of the porch.

公園で At the park

 今日の最高気温は32℃だったようです。昨日は肌寒いほどで、午後の散歩で温度計が吊るされている道路工事現場の横を通ったとき、気温は20℃を若干下回っていました。10℃以上の変化。

高温を利用して、最近 獣臭を放っていたタイガのシャンプーをしました。タオルで拭いたらすぐに公園へ、自然乾燥の旅です。

The maximum temperature today reached 32℃.  In contrast, it was rather cool yesterday and when we passed in front of the thermometer near the road construction site, it indicated just below 20℃.  Such a big change.

By taking advantage of the heat, I shampooed Taiga who was beginning to smell like a wild animal recently.  After drying her with towels, we set out for the park for natural drying.

公園の時計は午後1:20分前。暑すぎて人影もなし。

When we arrived at the park, it was just before 1:20 p.m.  Not a soul in sight due to the heat.

でも、何とも良い香りが.....    入口の広場にはシナノキ（科の木）が数本植わっていて、芳香が漂ってきました。個人的に、この時期の3大芳香はシナノキ、スイカズラ、ナツメの花の香りです。さらに、写真の右端に写り込んでいるハゼの木からも甘い香りがしてきました。

However, a beautiful scent welcomed me.  In this square, there are several Japanese linden trees, and they are in full bloom now.  Linden flower is one of my favourite scents this time of the year, along with those of wild honey suckles and jujubes.  The tree on the extreme right in the photo below is the Japanese wax tree whose flowers also produce a sweet fragrance.

花が満開で、ミツバチなどの昆虫が集まっています。上に挙げた私の３大芳香の共通点は石鹸っぽい匂いなのに対し、ハゼの花はもっと濃い印象です。

The tree is in full bloom now, and there were countless insects such as honeybees.  Whereas my favourite 3 scents mentioned above are similar to a soap scent, the sweet smell of this tree is thick and heavy.

とにかく暑いので、涼しい林を通って公園上のほうを目指します。

To avoid the heat, we walked through the woodland and headed for the field above where there was more breeze.

日向は暑いけど、

Avoiding the sunny spot, 

木陰にいる限り涼しくて心地よいです。敷物を持参していたら爆睡してしまいそうなくらいです。

we remained cool and comfortable in the wooded area.  If I had brought a tarp, I would have fallen asleep without waking up for hours.

タイガの体がだいぶ乾いてきたので、さっきの林を通って帰ることにしました。

Taiga was getting dry, so we started to head home, walking through the woodland we had passed earlier.

その後、日陰伝いに帰るために桜の木がある草地を通りました。一旦 ベンチで足を止めるとタイガが草地に長居したくて移動を拒否。

After that, we entered another field so that we could pick our way home by walking from one shade to another.  However, once we stopped at a table and bench, Taiga refused to move since she knew that this was the end of the park area.

気持ちは分かるけど、シャンプー後のタオルや獣臭のついた敷物の洗濯など、私はいろいろやることがあるので連れ帰りました。高温のおかげで、３回分の洗濯物は夕方までには全て乾きました。

I fully understood how she felt, but I had a lot of washing to do at home - the towels, her smelly blanket etc.  So, we got up and came home.  Thanks to the heat, all the washing got dry by evening.

皇帝ナツメ Emperor Jujube

 去年の5月25日に届いた皇帝ナツメは、当初から立派な苗でした。今から思うと、あの時点で２年生の苗だったと思います。セールでこんな完璧な苗が売られていたと思うと、お店に感謝です。

The Emperor jujube plant arrived on 25th May last year.  It was a well-developed plant from the start.  I think the tree was probably 2 years old at that time.  I still cannot believe that such a good plant was on sale - I am so grateful to the shop even now.

これが現在の状態。この春に成長した枝を放置していたら、伸び伸びの樹姿になってしまいました。３本の枝のうち最も長いのは最近 摘心しました。他の２本も勢いよく伸びてきているので、いずれ３本の長さを揃える予定です。今年の成長期はまだまだ残っているので、そのうち沢山の脇枝が出ることを期待しています。

This is how the tree looks now.  The 3 branches from last year continued to grow this spring and now the whole tree looks a little lanky.  Of the 3 branches, I have already pinched the tallest one, with the intention that all the 3 branches will reach the same height eventually.  I am optimistic about their future growth, since we have many more months of growth left this year.

バルコニーのこの一角は、もとはパッションフルーツのツルを絡ませるために組み立てたキウイ棚がそのままになっています。南向き、かつ北風以外の風通し良好です。

This corner of the balcony was used for growing passion fruits until 2 years ago, with the vines being supported by the kiwi scaffold.  Here, the plant enjoys full sun, and it is shielded from north wind, otherwise, it gets breeze in any direction.

花が咲き始めていますが気にしない。ナツメは7-8月の猛暑の開花で本格的に着果するので、今の涼しい気候でこの幼い苗に幼果が着いてもほぼ全部落ちるでしょう。これからどんどん枝が増えて、それらの花が真夏に咲けば十分です。

Some flowers are opening, but I do not expect anything yet.  Jujube flowers opening during the hottest months (July-August) are most likely to produce fruits that grow to maturity.  Fruit setting in the current cool weather can be misleading - with a young tree like this, most of them will fall off.

最も地面に近い枝にも沢山の蕾が出ています。去年は最終的に10個の実を生らせましたが、今年はもう少し多くしてもよさそうです。

Even the limbs closest to the ground have a lot of flowers.  Last year, I let 10 fruits grow to maturity.  Since the tree is much larger now, I might go for more this year.
