モミジの盆栽鉢作り Bonsai pot for maple seedlings

今年の春に発芽した赤葉モミジの苗を植え付けるための浅皿を探していましたが、浅いタイプのものはなかなかお店では見つかりません。唯一、イメージ通りのを見かけたのは、散歩中に通りがかった空き家の庭に放置された大小様々な鉢の山の天辺に乗っていたものでした。それを思い浮かべながら自分で作ろうと思い、粘土を通販でゲット。手にとって「あれっ」と思ったのは、粘土とは思えない軽さ。

I have been looking for a shallow bonsai pot for my red-leaf Japanese maple seedlings.  However, deep, modern looking pots are in vogue, and I could not find anything of the shape I needed.  The only one that fit the image I had in mind was lying on top of a heap of abandoned pots in the garden of an uninhabited house that I passed by when walking with Taiga.  So, I decided to make one myself and got a packet of clay that is said to be water resistant - i.e., it does not melt in water.  When I held it in my hand, I was surprised to see how light it was - nothing like the weight of natural clay.

水彩絵の具を練り込んでカラー粘土にすることも可能だそうです。絵具を持ち合わせないので、そのまま使います。将来、好みが変わったら新たに粘土を買って、色付けや形などで工夫してみようと思います。

According to the instruction, you can mix water-colour paint to make the clay colourful.  I did not have any painting colours, so I decided to keep it simple for my first pot.  This material is very cheap and, if I change my mind in the future, I will try using the colour or come up with a different shape.

袋を開けてみると、今まで見たことない材質です。しかも泡っぽくて柔らかいプラスチックのような感覚。練っていても全く手が汚れません。

When I opened the packet, it was something totally unfamiliar.  It was foamy, and it was more like soft plastic material rather than 'clay'.  Moreover, my hands remained clean whatever I did with the material.

まずは、土の水はけをよくするために、鉢底用の足を作っておきます。長さを同じに切ったら、本体が乾燥してからつけるために数日保管。それまでにはこれらの足も硬く乾燥しているはずなので、余った粘土は密封しておいて接着剤として使う予定。材質がゴムのようにぐねぐねして変形するので、いま本体にとりつけようとすると長さも形もバラバラになってしまいます。

I first made legs for the pot to increase drainage.  Having ensured that they were of the same size and length, I decided to leave them for several days until when the pot would be dry and hard enough to attach these.  The leftover clay will be kept wrapped until when I use it as glue for the legs and the pot.  The material is too rubber-like and unstable, and if I try to attach them to the pot today, the shape and length will be all different.

本体用の粘土は十分あります。適当な厚みに延ばしたら、コッペパン用の型を利用して形作りすることにしました。

There is enough clay to make a pot.  After rolling the clay out to a suitable thickness, I used the mould for a bun.

Having removed the bread mould, I started to shape the pot.

水はけ用の穴を3か所に開けました。手作り感満載。イメージトレーニングしていたより遥かに難しくて苦戦しました。手触りがゴムのような材質で、つかみどころがない。従来の天然の粘土とは違い、手を離したとたんに形が崩れて勝手に変形してしまいます。結局、グラタン皿のような出来上がり。

I made 3 punctures to ensure good drainage.  The pot looks very unsophisticated - this is very different from the image I had at the start.  In my defense, I can only say that this material is a shape shifter.  Unlike the natural clay, it changes its shape the moment I take my hands off.  It ended up looking like a gratin dish.

最後には、半分投げやりで終了。

Well, this will have to do for now.

粘土の厚みによって３～７日かけて完全に乾燥するそうなので、すぐには使えません。苗と並べてみると、大きすぎました。でも、そのうち苗が育つでしょう。

The instruction says that, depending on the thickness of the clay, it will take 3-7 days to get completely dry.  So, I cannot use it yet.  Looking at the pot and the seedlings, I think the pot was too large - the seedlings will have to grow to fit the pot.

タイガの換毛期はまだ終わっていなかったのか、最近 抜け毛が激しかったので午後にシャンプーしました。毎日ファーミネーターをかけているより、洗ったほうが手っ取り早いです。シャンプーのあとは自然乾燥の旅で公園へ。

It seems that Taiga's moulting was not done yet.  She has been shedding heavily again recently, so I shampooed her this afternoon.  Rather than brushing her with the Furminator every day, it is a lot quicker to wash her.  After the shampoo, we headed for the park to dry her in the sun.

歩いているうちに、白っぽいアンダーコートの抜け毛が浮き上がってきます。これを指でつまんで引っ張ろうものなら、ゴソッと抜けてくる短い毛のやり場が無くなるのと終わりがないので、引っ張りたい誘惑に耐えながら歩きます。

As Taiga was walking, the loose fur from the pale undercoat started surfacing.  If I ever pulled some of it out with my fingers, a huge chunk would come out and I would not be able to stop doing it.  So, I had to resist the temptation and kept walking.

城北中央公園に来たついでに、この公園に１本だけあるノムラもみじを見に行きました。

Since we were at the Johoku Central Park, we went to the spot where the only Nomura maple tree grows in this park.

今は夏葉の色で、薄茶色です。うちの発芽苗もノムラの種からですが、先の写真のとおり春からずっと真っ赤です。樹齢が関係してくるのでしょうか。

As it is summer, the leaves are light brown.  My red-leaf seedlings are also Nomura variety, but their leaves are as red as they were in spring - perhaps due to the seedlings' age?

秋になると再び赤葉になるので、紅一点で目立ちます。

In autumn, this tree will stand out since it will be the only red tree against the background of green and yellow.

タイガが地面の臭い嗅ぎに夢中。ワンコはなぜかミミズの臭いが大好きで、地表に出たミミズを見つけると地面に肩をこすりつけてスリゴロすることが良くあります。今その気配があったので、広場の先のほうへ移動しました。

Taiga was occupied with sniffing the ground.  Dogs love the smell of ground worms and, if they find one on the surface, they will rub their shoulders against the worm.  Right now, Taiga looked about to do that, so we moved to the other side of the field.

台風８号の影響で今朝も早い時間には小雨が降っていました。日光でその水分が蒸発してくると、もう蒸し暑いのなんの。

The effect of the typhoon No. 8 was lingering this morning with light rain in the early hours.  The sun came out after that, and the ground moisture has been rising all day.  It was very muggy.

帰ろう、ね、ね？　帰宅後には玄関内で、ドライヤー掛けの作業が待っています。ドライヤーで毛が舞い上がると、汗だくの顔にもろに引っ付きます。かといって、この時期、玄関の外でこれをやろうものなら、蚊の餌食になります。

I coaxed Taiga to start heading home.  I had to save my energy to finish her drying process with a dryer at home.  In this weather with lots of mosquitoes outside, I have to use the dryer in the porch.  The dryer blows the undercoat hair into the air, and it sticks to my sweaty face.  I have to conserve my strength for all that.

帰りはミンミンゼミの声に急かされるように、公園の出口を目指しました。

We headed for the exit of the park amid the ringing sounds of cicadas.

雨のなかのライム Lime fruits in rain

 台風９号の影響で、今日は朝から夕方までほぼ一日雨でした。５号のときのような大雨ではなかったので、庭木にはちょうど良い潅水になりました。東向きのバルコニーに置いてあるタヒチライムの幼果が順調に育っています。

Due to the effect of typhoon No. 9, we had rain intermittently from early morning to the evening.  However, the rain fall was not as heavy as No. 5, and for the plants in my garden it was a day of generous watering.  The Tahiti lime on my balcony facing the east is doing well in the hot and humid Japanese summer.

春の第１回目の開花からの実がついたとき、果皮が葉っぱと同じ色でどこにあったか毎回探すのに時間がかかったので、白いテープを括り付けておきました。それが４個。

The first flowering in spring produced 4 fruits.  The colour of the fruits was exactly the same as the leaves and, every time I wanted to check the state of the young fruits, it took me a long time to locate them.  So, I tied a white string next to each fruit to make them stand out, and it worked.

第２回目の開花からは２個が着果。この苗は２年前に棒苗で買ったばかりで今年が初結実。なので、２回目以降の開花からは着果を期待していませんでしたが、成長し続けています。

The second flowering ended in 2 more fruits.  I bought this plant 2 years ago as a newly grafted tree, and it flowered this year for the first time.  So, I was not expecting any fruit setting from the second flowering onwards, but these 2 fruits look as if they are here to stay.

そして最近の第３回目の開花からの幼果も落ちずに育っていきそうです。

We recently had the 3rd flowering, followed by some fruit setting, out of which at least these 2 seem safe to stay.

コーネリアンチェリーの蕾 Flower buds of Cornelian Cherry

 コーネリアンチェリーのパイオニアは、コガネムシ成虫に葉っぱを食べられてボロボロになりました。

The new leaves of cornelian cherry 'Pioneer' were plagued by scarab beetles a few weeks ago.

レース状態です。齧られていた当時に芽吹いたばかりの新鮮な葉っぱが標的になっていました。数匹の成虫を捕まえて処分したあと、最近 新葉が出てきたので少し苗が元気に見えてきました。

The leaves were left looking like lace work.  I caught and dealt with several scarab beetles, after which more new leaves came out.  The tree now looks slightly better with the newest leaves.

This flower bud was discovered several weeks ago.

最近、これら↓２枚の写真の丸いものが出てきました。上の蕾に比べるとかなり小さくて、目を凝らさないと見えないほどですが、カメラレンズを通すと、やはり蕾だと確信しました。この写真の同じ円の中に写り込んでいる右側の細いものは、来年の枝の元で、蕾と葉芽の違いは分かり易いです。この苗は今年の５月に届いたときは30cmくらいのチビ苗だったので、まさか今年から蕾が見られるとは思ってもいませんでした。

Recently, I noticed two more round things, as shown in the following photos.  Compared to the flower bud above, these new discoveries are tiny.  I really have to strain my eyes to see them, but the camera lens has helped me - I am now convinced that they are flower buds.  When you look at this photo just below, you can see the difference between a flower bud (on the left leaf axil) and the leaf bud (right axil).  When I bought this plant in May this year, it was only about 30 cm tall, and I never thought of seeing flower buds this summer.

対して、こちらのカザンラクは去年の春に買ったものですが、目を皿のようにして見ても蕾らしきものは見当たりません。

In contrast, nothing is happening with this 'Kazanlak' which I bought in spring last year.

夕方散歩でタイガは久しぶりに城北公園とは逆方向の住宅街を選びました。石神井川の対岸を歩いているうちに、早宮地区で例のサンシュユが見られる畑に到着。畑の一角に、もうどうでも良くなった果樹が押し込められています。（これを見るたびに思い出すのが、テレビコマーシャルのせりふ。置き去りになっているオーディオ機器を査定・買取するというもので、「あなたが（かつて）愛したオーディオ」の部分を聞くたび、過去に格下げした植物のことを思い出して胸がチクリ。）

For a change (and as if she read my thoughts), Taiga chose to walk in the opposite direction to the Johoku Park this evening.  As we were walking on the other side of the Shakujii River, we came to the vegetable plot where numerous fruit trees were shoved into a corner.  At some time in the past, the owner must have wanted these trees enough to pay money to get them, but as time passed, he lost interest in them - looking at these plants makes me feel guilty.

持て余して放置されている果樹のなかに、このサンシュユの木が混ざっています。

Among the abandoned fruit trees, the dogwood is trying to survive.

西洋サンシュユにしては実が大きくないので、極東アジアに自生する普通のものかも。

The fruits are smallish for a European cultivar, so it may well be a wild dogwood found in the Far East including Japan.

来年用の蕾。大きさは上に挙げたパイオニアの新たな発見の蕾よりは大きいけど、これらは随分前から出ているので当然と言えば当然です。来年の開花時期に花を見れば、西洋サンシュユか、野生種なのかがはっきりします。花の塊の形状が全く異なるからです。

These are the flower buds for next year.  They are slightly larger than the newly found flower buds on my Pioneer, but it is only natural since these have been out much longer.  If I come back to look at the blossoms next spring, I will know for sure whether this is a Cornus mas or a wild Asian dogwood, since the flowers are very different.

だいぶ歩いたし薄暗くなってきたので、橋を渡って左の桜台地区へ戻りました。
It was getting dark, so we crossed the river to the left and returned to our Sakuradai district.

帰り道、巨大な金魚が入った水槽を道端に置いている家の前を通りました。

On our way home, we passed by the house where they have fish tanks with huge goldfish.

通るたびに水槽の中の顔ぶれが代わっているように見えます。家の方によると、屋内にはもっと沢山の金魚が飼われているそうで、水槽の掃除のときに外に出すメンバーを入れ替えするようです。冬の夕方散歩では夜の暗さですが、これらの水槽はライトアップされているので、金魚たちはキラキラ輝いてウォーターショーのように華やかです。

I have a feeling that the individuals are different every time I pass by.  According to the wife of this house, they keep many more goldfish inside the house, and they change some of the members when they clean the fish tanks.  In winter, when we pass here during our evening walk, it is already dark.  The fish tanks are lit up at night and the goldfish sparkle as they swim - such an elegant water show.

 先日 近所のJAで見つけたローゼルの苗は、猛暑のなか元気に根っこを張り始めたようで、新芽が動きだしました。左後ろに写り込んでいるエビネの葉っぱが、日向すぎて日焼けを起こし始めています。ローゼルにはどんどん枝葉を増やして、日陰を作ってほしいです。

The roselle plant that I got recently has started to grow in the current heat wave - its roots must be spreading steadily.  I originally got this plant so as to create a shield against the sun for the Ebine orchid (the yellow leaves on the left).  The orchid's leaves are getting sunburnt due to too much exposure to the sun, after removing some plants recently.  So, I am hoping that the roselle would grow fast during the summer.

これは苗の頭頂部。新鮮な葉っぱが開こうとしています。Youtubeで米国のガーデナーが言っていましたが、ローゼルは新鮮な葉っぱまで食用になるそうです。一見、毛が生えて硬そうで、試そうとは思いませんが。

This is the top of the roselle plant.  Fresh leaves are about to open.  According to a US Youtuber, you can eat the fresh leaves of roselle plant, too.  However, I am only interested in getting the red roselles after flowering, and not the leaves.

Every leaf axil of the trunk is starting to bud.

This one is the left main branch.   With herbaceous plants, changes are easy to observe.

最近タイガは夕方散歩で城北公園へ行くクセがついたようです。今日はまず築山のある草地で一休み。

Taiga has got into the habit of going to the Johoku Park for evening walks recently.  We first rested in the field with an artificial mound where Taiga likes getting a treat.

木立の向こうは高校のグラウンドですが、学校が夏休みに入っているせいか人影もなくとても静かです。

Beyond the row of trees, there is a sports ground of a Senior High School.  Due to the summer holiday, it was very quiet with no activity.

タイガは楽しそうな顔をしていますが、ここは草が瑞々しい分、蚊がたくさんいて大変です。なので、橋をわたって向こうの広場へ移動することにしました。

Taiga looks content.  However, it was getting very uncomfortable for me with lots of mosquitoes.  The grass in this field is lush and provides a comfortable environment for mosquitoes.  So, we decided to move to the main part of the Johoku Park, across the river.

中央公園入口の広場は、草が乾燥気味だけど蚊の心配はなしです。一緒に座り込んでリラックスしていたら、白柴のおもちちゃんが来ました。

The field at the entrance of the Johoku Central Park is much dryer with no mosquito problems.  As Taiga and I were relaxing sitting on the grass, Omochi, a female White Shiba Inu arrived.

おもちちゃんは近くまでくるとペタっと腹ばいになって、挨拶に寄って来たタイガも目に入らないようす。

Omochi immediately lay flat on her stomach after she came closer to us.  Taiga approached her to say 'hello', but Omochi could not be bothered.

クレジットカード関連のリスクなどについて おもちパパと話し込んでいたら、私の足元へ来て「撫でろ」の視線を送ってきました。

As Omochi dad and I were absorbed in the subject of credit card related problems, Omochi came close to my feet and started demanding a cuddle with her eyes.

おもちちゃんは、ワンコよりは女王様猫のような側面があります。

She is more like a diva cat, rather than a dog, with her caprice.

私は指示に従い撫で始めました。

So, I started stroking her as per instruction.

話込みと同時進行で延々とおもちちゃんを撫でていたら、

As I kept cuddling Omochi, at the same time talking with her dad,

タイガが疎外感をもったのか、ズカズカと踏み込んできて、何と私に’すがりつき’はじめました。タイガは家では全くそんなことはしないのに、外では時々これをやります。困ったものですが、嫉妬の矛先を他所のワンコに向けずに私に向けるのでまだましかも知れません。

Taiga probably felt excluded.  She walked in on Omochi and me, and, she started mounting on me.  She never does this at home, but when she does it outside, it is so embarrassing.  At least, I can say in her defense that, when feeling jealous, she never takes it on other dogs, but instead she directs her dissatisfaction towards me.
