キーライムが発芽開始 Key Lime Seeds germinating

 この前スイーツに利用したキーライムの種が発芽し始めました。まだ２個の種が動き出しただけですが嬉しい。よく見ると、種１個につき2本の芽が出ているので、単胚ではないようです。

After I used the Key limes for a lime pie some weeks ago, I sowed the seeds.  Two of the seeds have just started to germinate - 2 buds coming out of each seed.

昨日は散々雨が降りましたが、今朝は一変さわやかな朝でした。柿の木広場でタイガを伸び伸び遊ばせました。

After the heavy rain all day yesterday, it was such a nice change this morning.  We went to the Persimmon Park and Taiga was a happy customer.

公園で At the park

 四中横の草地に着くと、スバル君がいました。音の出るおもちゃを嬉しそうに咥えています。

スバル君は地面にゴロゴロするのが大好きで、このような草地ならまだよいのですが、砂埃立ち上がるドッグランでもお構いなしにやるので散歩のたびに服が汚れるそうです。

Subaru loves rolling on the ground, whether it is on the grass in a field, or on the sandy ground in the dog park, with the result that his clothes are always soiled by the time he finishes walking.

まるでタイガに見せびらかすように、おもちゃを一旦放しました。

He releases the toy in front of Taiga as if to invite her,

でも、タイガが近づいたとたんに.... ワンコらしいですね。

but the moment Taiga came closer, he grabbed it back - a typical dog.

道を渡って公園入口の草地へ移動。野球の練習に向かう小学生たちのユニフォームが鮮やかです。

We crossed the road to walk in the Centre of the Johoku Park.  Small kids in their uniform going to practice baseball.

空には秋の雲。とても清々しい陽気です。

Typical autumn cloud in the sky.  Such a pleasant morning for a walk, with the crisp breeze and warm sun.

ドッグラン横の道を通ったら、初めて見る子に会いました。まだ生後７か月のミックス犬で、名前はヨモギ君。タイガを見て最初は嬉しそうに寄ってきましたが、

As we walked by the dog park, we met a new face - a 7-month old male of mixed breeds, named 'Yomogi'.  Initially, he was all eager to meet Taiga but as he got closer,

実際に近づくと慎重にタイガの動きを伺っています。

he became more cautious.

いつになくタイガが偉そうな目つきで、8歳半のオバサンの貫禄です。

Taiga is feeling confident with her age and size.

タイガに臭いチェックされて耐えるヨモギ君。

As Taiga checked Yomogi's scent, he endured the ordeal.

タイガは飼い主さんにも挨拶。ヨモギ君の関心は、近寄ってくるフレンチブルドッグの子に向けられていました。

Taiga greeting Yomogi's dad, whereas Yomogi's attention was directed to a French Bulldog who was passing by.

フレブルの子は大人のオスに見えますが、ヨモギ君が遊びに誘っています。

The French Bulldog seems to be a much older male, but Yomogi invites him for a play.

フレブルはお子ちゃまには関心がなさそう。今朝のドッグランはフレブル祭り状態でした。

Sadly, Yomogi is not getting the response he expected.

サバラン Savarins

 昔、流行ったサバランを作りました。上に乗せるフルーツはイチゴが定番ですが、生憎今は売られていないので身近な食材を使いました。庭で生ったキウイのレインボーレッドも一部使いました。

I made savarins dipped in rum syrup.  The most popular fruit for the topping is the strawberry in Japan.  Unfortunately, strawberries are not available at this moment.  So, I used what were readily available, including a Kiwi fruit picked in my garden.

公園で At the park

 四中横の草地に着くと、久しぶりにラブラドゥードルのアルバスと妹のエプカちゃんに会えました。去年のロックダウン中に会ったとき、エプカは未だワクチンを終えたばかりの仔犬で、ママの肩からぶら下げた袋状のキャリーに入っていましたが、もうすっかり大きくなっています。

When we arrived at the park, we saw Albas and his little sister, Epka, both Labradoodles, for the first time since spring last year during the lockdown.  At that time, Epka had just finished her vaccine shots and was being carried in a sling hanging from mom's shoulder.  Now she is totally grown up.

コートが伸びてヒツジのようなフワフワの毛なので、アルバスのように頭の中央で分けることはできないそうです。

Epka's coat is very different from that of Albas - her hair will not stay parted in the middle of her forehead like that of Albas's.

アルバスは子犬のとき散々タイガと追いかけっこして育ったので、今でもタイガに会うと嬉しそうです。

Albas has known Taiga since he was a puppy and they used to play together every day.

私の脚にしがみついて来ました。タイガは外面が良くて他所の人には超甘えん坊なのに、一旦帰宅するとシラーッとして所在不明になります。そんな扱いを日頃から受けている私にとって、

こんなことされると、もうメロメロです。

I melt inside.

とてもシャイな性格なので、挨拶をした後はきゃあきゃあ騒いでいる私たちを後目に静かに通り過ぎて行きました。

Curry is an extremely shy individual and found our gathering too noisy.

道を渡って水飲み場のあるところへ行くと、近所のゴロウとシュナウザーのトムがいました。

We crossed the road to another field, where we saw my neighbour's Gorou, and Tom, a male Schnauzer.

そこへ、さっきのアルバスとエプカが到着。エプカはゴロウママへの挨拶もそこそこに、トムと取っ組み合いのガウガウを開始。毎回会うたびに、これがトムとエプカの儀式なのだそうです。

Then, Albas and Epka caught up with us.  Epka had no time to greet Grou's mom and started challenging Tom.  According to Epka's dad, they do this as a matter of fact every time they meet.

知らない人が見ると大喧嘩をしているようですが、二人は本当に仲が良いそうです。

To a stranger, they look like fighting for real but they are fast friends.

お転婆のエプカをトムがねじ伏せてしまいました。

やっとアルバスの番で、ゴロウママに挨拶。アルバスは子犬のときから内気な性格に対してエプカはお転婆なので、家では妹にやり込められてばかりだそうです。

As Epka was busy with Tom, Albas caught the opportunity to say 'hello' to Gorou's mom.  Albas being a timid dog, his little sister behaves like a diva at home and outside.

帰宅して嬉しいサプライズ。パッションフルーツの最後の蕾が、今朝はまだ硬く閉じていたのに１時間ほど犬散歩で出ているうちに開花していました。今日（11月6日）開花したのは上の花で、下のは２日前の開花でした。

When I came home, I found that the last of the Passion flower had opened - it was still a firm bud when I left for morning walk an hour earlier.

これ↓は今日の花。子房がまだ小さく、オシベの間に埋もれているように見えます。

Today's flower (6th November): the ovary is still small, buried among the stamens, before being pollinated.

こちら↓は２日前に開花して、人工授粉が済んでいる花。オシベを１個ずつピンセットでむしり取って授粉します。うまく受粉したらしく、子房が膨らんできています。この後、花びらとガクが前に倒れるように動いて子房を覆い隠してしまいます。

The flower from 2 days ago: the ovary is slowly growing after pollination (the stamens are no longer there, since I had to pull them off in order to pollinate).

先に開花した花からの幼果が大きくなりました。第２花の実は第１花の実の大きさに追いついた感じなので、肥大の限界に近づいているような印象です。現在の大きさは、お店で売っている実を少し小さくしたサイズです。

The 3 fruits are doing well.  The fruit from the second flower (top) has is almost as large as the one from the first flower (bottom).  This probably means that they are nearing the ultimate size.  Indeed, they are close to the size of store-bought fruits.

秋深まる Oranges and tangerines in autumn

11月に入って生食用柑橘類が色づいてきました。

こちらは門のそばに植えてあるブラッドオレンジのタロッコと、それに高接ぎしたセミノール（手前の部分）。

With the climate getting cooler, oranges and tangerines are turning yellow.  This tree is Tarocco (blood orange), with Seminole grafted on some of the branches.

The left part of the tree is mainly Seminole fruits.

今年はブラッドオレンジのモロも豊作です。葉っぱの裏側のはまだ色つきが遅いですが、

This is Moro (another blood orange).  The fruits behind dense leaves are still green, but

日当たりの良い枝のは結構黄色くなっています。

the fruits on the sunny side are more advanced.

固まって生っている部分はグレープフルーツを連想させます。

Some of them grow like grapefruits.

 こちらはモロに高接ぎしてあるミカンの田口早生。こちらはモロ以上に一枝当たりの実のつき方が密です。

These are tangerines called "Taguchi Wase", grafted on Moro.  Taguchi Wase is a reliable prolific producer.  They will be fully ripe towards the end of the year, so I always enjoy them in the New Year.

中には巨大果もありますが、大きいからといって浮き皮になったり味がボケることはありません。

Some of the fruits are huge, but the skin is tight (no air bubbles between the skin and the flesh) and the taste is as good as normal-sized ones.

タイガは退屈。
