夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 夕方散歩で城北中央公園へ行きました。今日の日中は非常に暑かったですが、夕方には少しだけ過ごしやすくなって、まるで残暑の季節のようでした。赤トンボまで飛んでいました。

We went to the Johoku Central Park for the evening walk.  It had been really hot earlier in the day but, by evening, the temperature was more tolerable, and it felt like the end of summer.  Even red dragon flies were in the air, which normally signifies the arrival of autumn.

We ran into a familiar face, a Shiba-mix boy.  Two red pooches greeting each other in the evening light.

川沿いを歩いてテニスコート横の草地を目指します。

We walked along the river, heading for the field next to tennis courts.

この草地は川風がくるので夕方は過ごしやすいです。タイガは冷たい草の上に座り込んで満足顔。

This field is our favourite place in the summer, since we get breezes from the river in the evening.  Taiga was content to sit on the cool grass.

前に一度会ったことのある、シュナウザーのジョン君、５歳が通りがかりました。私がタイガの隣で座り込んでいるのをみて、高齢者の具合が悪いのかとジョン君ママが心配そうに尋ねてきました。

A Schnauzer passed by.  We had seen him once before, 5 yeas old boy named John.  His mom was worried that I was sitting on the grass due to feeling ill (I am a senior citizen).

ジョン君が付けている保冷剤が優れものなので、メーカーと製品の名称をスマホに記録しておきました。事前の冷凍保存など不要で、使用前に水につけて衣服の内側に装着するだけなのに、手で触ってみると冷たいし、しかもワンコの毛が湿っていない。これ、建設現場など外で仕事をする人に持ってこいの製品だと思います。

I found out that John was wearing an interesting item to keep him cool in this weather.  The piece of material is inserted under the clothes.  Before use, you simply soak it in water, and there is no need to keep it in the fridge or freezer beforehand.  When I touched the material, it was really cold, and yet John's back was dry.  It seems an ideal thing for people who work outside, such as on construction sites.

そこへ、「おもち」ちゃんと初めてみる黒っぽい男の子がやって来ました。男の子は５歳の「こてつ」君。この子は野犬の群れから保護された子だそうで親については分かりませんが、歩く姿はグレーハウンドかイタグレ、またはウィペットを連想させる丸い背中になります。ビビリ且つ興奮しやすい性格なので、飼い主さんが始終押さえつけていました。

We were joined by Omochi and another, a new face, 5 years old, named Kotetsu.   Kotetsu was originally rescued from a pack of stray dogs when he was about 6 months old.  They do not know his parentage, but looking at him walk with his round back, I immediately thought of a Greyhound or Whippet as one of his ancestors.  His dad kept holding him, since he was extremely skittish.

おもちちゃんが、タイガに近づこうとした”よそ者”に怒って威嚇した瞬間です。おもちちゃんは姉御肌。自分よりも数歳年上のタイガを自分の群れの子分とみなしているので、よそ者が不用意に近づこうとするとこうやって怒ります。

Omochi suddenly burst into an attack mode.  An 'outsider' was approaching Taiga, and she could not tolerate it.  Omochi behaves like a caring boss, and she thinks Taiga is one of the members of her pack - although Taiga is several years older.

その不届き者はこの子で、名前はコロ君。実はタイガとは昔からの顔なじみでタイガより3歳くらい下。他の子たちと群れることなく、いつも飄々と我が道を行く子です。

That 'outsider' was this boy, named Koro.  In fact, he has known Taiga since he was a puppy, and he is about 3 years younger.  He is a loner and happily goes his own way, except he likes to take a sniff at Taiga every time he sees her.

初対面のジョン君も反応しています。コロ君は未去勢の子なのが分かるのでしょうか。

Even John is reacting to Koro.  They meet each other for the first time, but John probably senses that Koro is an intact boy.

カンタもやって来ました。

Kanta also arrives.

タイガが嬉しそうに迎えますが、

Taiga happily greets him, but

カンタは偉そうに唸ったあとはタイガの臭い嗅ぎ。

Kanta growls at Taiga and then takes a sniff.

横から近づいてきたおもちちゃんには、大人しく臭い嗅ぎさせていました。

However, Kanta allows Omochi to sniff him in a subservient way, even though Omochi suddenly approached him from the side.  It is interesting to see the power balance.

私がカンタを呼びつけたら寄ってきました。

I summoned Kanta and he came to me.

一旦はふられたタイガがまた寄って来ました。

Taiga was once snubbed but she still approached Kanta.

あくまでもタイガには、そっけない。

Kanta's attitude remained curt.  When Kanta was a puppy and Taiga 4 years old, she looked after him - does he not remember that?

公園で At the Park

 夏はなぜか早く目がさめてしまいます。エアコンの効果を高めるために雨戸を下ろして寝るので、部屋の中は真っ暗なのにそれでも5時前に目がさめます。

早朝の公園は静かで、木陰でちょうど良い風に当たっていると、そのまま二度寝しそうになりました。

For some reason, I wake up very early during summer months.  To maximise the effect of the air conditioner, I close the shutter of my bedroom, so the room is pitch dark even in the morning.  And yet, I wake up before 5 a.m. during summer.

When we arrived at the park, it was quiet and very pleasant to sit in the shade with a cool breeze.  I could have gone back to sleep there and then.

おとといのシャンプーのあと、ブラッシングするたびに大量の毛が抜け続けて、今ではすっかり夏毛になりました。抜け毛のおかげで、スリムになったかのように見えます。

After the shampoo two days ago, Taiga has been shedding profusely every time I brushed her.  Now she is dressed for the summer.  Thanks to the heavy shedding, she even looks slimer.

帰宅するとまだ朝の７時すぎ。タイガは玄関で満足そうな顔をしていたので、私は２階へ上がって本当に二度寝しました。

When we got home, it was still just after 7 a.m.  Taiga was content to stay on the cool tiles of the porch, so I went upstairs and actually slept for the second time this morning.

最近タイガが少し痩せたように見えるので、夕方散歩のときにアイスクリームのご褒美をあげることにしました。コンビニから出てきた私の手にアイスがあるのを見てゴキゲンです。

Since Taiga looks slimmer, I decided to reward her with an ice cream during our evening walk.  When she saw me coming out of the convenience store with an ice cream in my hand, she was thrilled.

尻尾がピンと上がって速足で公園を目指すので、写真がボケてしまうほど。

With her tail up heading for the park, she walked so fast that photos were blurred. 

外でアイスクリームを食べるときは、マイスプーン持参。

When we eat ice cream, I always take 'my spoon' with us.

一心不乱に食べるのを見ると、カワイイなあ、と親になったような気分。

タイガが何度もスプーンのアイスを地面にこぼすので、ハシブトカラスが飛んできてすぐ近くの枝に居座りました。しかも、カラスは何度も大声を出して、まるで私たちを急かすよう。私たちが立ち去ったあと、案の定、さっと舞い降りて地面の溶けたアイスを突いていました。

Seeing her heartily eat the ice cream gives me a warm feeling as if I were her biological mom.

She was clumsy with the spoon and dropped the ice cream on the ground several times.  Seeing that, a crow with huge beaks came over and sat on a branch nearby.  Moreover, it screamed frequently as if to rush us.  Indeed, as soon as we left the spot, the crow came down and started pecking the melted ice cream on the ground.

そのあと公園の上の広場へ移動。今日の昼間はものすごく暑かったけど、夕方の公園は風があって住宅街とは別世界の心地よさでした。

We then moved to the upper part of the park.  There, it was very comfortable with cool wind, after the scorching day.

冬棗のその後 More about Winter Jujube

 ナツメは高温・乾燥の天気が大好き。第一節と第三節に出始めた恒常的な枝が、ここ２日間で目を凝らさなくても見えるほどに育ちました。来週は毎日の最高気温が35℃以上の予報なので、さらに元気に新梢が伸びるでしょう。

それにしても、ひと節ごとに一年限りの枝がこんなに数多く出るのは、うちにある他の品種には見られません。大抵は、恒常的な枝の他に3本くらいの一年限りの枝が出ています。

Jujube trees love heat and dry weather.  The permanent branches that started budding a few days ago have been growing and now I do not have to strain my eyes to recognise their existence.  The weather forecast for next week is dry with the maximum temperature exceeding 35℃ every day.  So, the new buds should grow even faster.

What amazes me about this winter jujube plant is the fact that each node has so many non-permanent branches coming out - something I have not seen in other varieties I have.  Mostly, a node gets around 3 non-permanent branches in addition to the permanent branch.

This is the third node.  The permanent branch is more than 3 cm.

第二節の膨らみが膨張し始めて、茶色の殻の中から浅緑色が現れてきたので、そのうち芽吹くでしょう。

The second node is getting slightly bigger.  It used to be covered with brown skin, but now light green is becoming more predominant.  Hopefully, we will see a bud breaking out soon.

夕方散歩で公園へ向かう途中、落とし物らしきものが民家の塀の上に置かれていました。

On our way to the park for evening walk, I saw something looking like a lost item, placed on the side of a private house.

何とも可愛らしい小さな、小さな帽子です。この辺りは、若い母親が保育園児以下の幼い子供を自転車のチャイルドシートに乗せて移動するのが普通。忙しい中を自転車で走るので、子供が帽子や小さな荷物を落としても気づかずに走り続けることがよくあります。この帽子の小さなサイズから、帽子が外れたことを即座に母親に伝えられないほど幼い子供かもしれません。

It is an extremely tiny hat looking really cute.  In our district, young mothers usually carry their infants on a so-called 'child seat' mounted on the bicycle.  Typically, the young mom is busy, and in a hurry, and quite often she does not notice if the child loses a hat or drops a small item.  Judging by the size of this hat, the wearer is too young to be able to alert her mom about what happened.  I hope she will get it back soon.

夕方の公園。今朝この草地は草刈りのために封鎖されていたのですが、今は刈っぱなしの草が乾燥して干し草のような臭いを放っています。

At the park.  When we passed by this field this morning, it was closed to the public for grass cutting.  Now, the leftover of cut grass has been left in the sun and smell like hay.

公園へ来る途中の道で、若い女性に止められて色々 甲斐犬やタイガについて質問されました。タイガが12歳と聞いて、「全然そう見えないほど若い」と言われました。お世辞でも嬉しい。これからも元気で行こうね。

On our way here, I was stopped by a young woman who asked me about Taiga and the Kai breed.  When she heard that Taiga was 12 years old, she was surprised saying that Taiga looked much younger.  She may have been just polite for taking up our time, but it was nice to hear.  I want Taiga to stay happy and healthy.

リンゴ苗にハダニ Spider Mites on Apple Trees

 リンゴの葉っぱが、気づくとかなり減っていました。

I was not aware until this morning how much the apple trees had lost their leaves.

しかもハダニだらけ。ハダニって、雨の間はおとなしくしているのかと思っていたら、今朝みてびっくり。それとも、台風のあとの熱風で急激に繁殖した？とにかく葉っぱの裏をみて愕然としました。

Moreover, many of the leaves had spider mites underneath.  I thought spider mites were not active during rainy days, so I was really taken by surprise this morning.  Or, did they multiply explosively in the hot and dry air, once the typhoon was gone?

農薬は使いたくないので、自家製のものに初挑戦。Youtubeでは身近な自然素材で作る溶液に関するビデオが色々あるので、そのうちのひとつを自己責任で真似してみました。

I did not want to use chemical treatment.  Having watched many videos on Youtube about how to combat spider mites with natural solutions, I chose one of the methods - if it does not work, I will bear the consequence.

スプレーしたあと30分以降にシャワー水で溶液を洗い落すそうですが、その前にどんな状態なのかチェック。ハダニがスプレーする前よりもベターッと葉っぱに着いていて、「参りました」と言っているような外観です。自然素材のスプレーは耐性がつかないので毎回同じもので大丈夫だと思いますが、次回は違うレシピを試すのが今から楽しみ。

The video advised me to wash the solution off with shower after half an hour.  Before doing so, I wanted to see how the leaves looked.  The spider mites seem to be glued to the leaf, compared to the way it was before spraying, almost to say, "You got us".  This was fun.  

With natural solutions, I hear you do not have to worry about spider mites building resistance.  If so, I could use the same thing every time.  However, I am curious to see the effect of other natural solutions, so I will try a different mixture next time.

台風到来の前から、タイガは獣臭を放っていました。今日は久しぶりに晴れたので、午後にシャンプーしました。自然乾燥の散歩で公園へ。高温乾燥の空気のなかを歩いているうちにアンダーコートの抜け毛が浮き上がってきて、体の周りが白っぽく見えます。
Taiga was beginning to smell like a wild animal even before the start of the typhoon No. 5.  Since it was a sunny day today after so many rainy days, I shampooed Taiga in the afternoon.  We then left for a walk in the park.  As we were walking in the hot and dry air, the loose hair of her undercoat started surfacing.  As a result, her contour looks white.

数日ぶりの公園の草地で満足そうな顔です。３時台という中途半端な時間帯なので知り合いのワンコには会えませんでしたが、ウキウキした様子。
Taiga looking content, sitting on the cool grass after several days.  We were there between 3-4 p.m., too late for lunch walk and too early for evening walk, so we did not see any familiar faces.  Nevertheless, she looked happy all the time.

このあと私にはタイガにドライヤーとブラシをかける作業が残っているので、早く家に帰りたかったのですが、頑として動きませんでした。段々と頑固ばーさんになりそう。

My job was not finished yet - I had to give her dryer and brushing at home after that.  So, I wanted to go home, but she refused to budge.  Taiga is becoming a stubborn old lady?
