まっちょ君、シェリー君 "Macho" and "Shelly"

 今朝も雲ひとつ無い青空のもと、気持ちよく公園散歩。イチョウの枝が朝日を浴びてキラキラ輝いています。とても12月とは思えない暖かさ。

Another beautiful day with absolutely clear blue sky.  The branches of ginkgo trees were glittering in the morning light.  I cannot believe how warm it is for a December.

公園入口の草地で会った初対面のジャックラッセルの子。生後４か月足らずの男の子で、名前はひらがなで「まっちょ」君だそうです。全くものおじしない子なので、同じく生後４か月未満の豆黒柴のケビン君と仲良くできそうです。月齢もエネルギーレベルも同じなので。

We met a new face - a male Jack Russell Terrier, less than 4 months old, with a name "Macho".  I could not keep my face straight.  He is fearless with a high energy level, and I think he will be a good match as a playmate with the miniature Black Shiba Inu, Kevin, who is also less than 4 months old with high energy.

Taiga, like a granny, was very patient.

公園上のほうへ移動すると、ボーダーコリーのシェリー君がフリスビーの練習中。ボーダー特有の集中力とスタミナで、ママがフリスビーを投げてくれるのを待っています。

When we moved to the higher ground of the park, we saw Shelly, a male Border Collie, practicing with his frisbee.  He is a typical Border Collie, with extreme fixation on his toy and lots of stamina.  He urges his mom with his eyes.

毎日これを延々とするので、ボーダーを飼いたい人は相当の覚悟が要ります。

People who want to get a Border Collie should watch her do this for hours every day.

激しく動いたあとは水分補給の休憩。お疲れさまでした。

After the vigorous work, he takes a well-earned break.

帰り道、公園近くの民家で見た満開中のサザンカ（左）と、鈴なりの柚子の木（右）。日当たりバツグンの広い庭に、色んな木が大きく育っています。

On our way home and near the park, I saw a garden with a sasanqua tree in full bloom (left), and a Yuzu tree with lots of fruits (right).  This garden enjoys full sun and has many trees - a dream garden for me.

私好みの八重咲。いいものを見せていただきました。

The sasanqua flowers are deep pink with double petals.  They are so pretty and just watching them makes me feel content.

振り向くと、ジッとガマンのタイガ。目で退屈を訴えています。

When I turned around, I saw Taiga with her judging look.  Sorry, let's go home.

午後散歩 Afternoon walk

今日も雲ひとつ無い青空とポカポカ陽気。とても師走とは思えない陽気でした。週末ということもあって、城北公園はいつもよりは人出がありました。

Yet another warm and dry day with no cloud in the sky.  I cannot believe that we are already in December.  With the pleasant weather and it being weekend, there were more people than usual in the park.

タイガとあちこち歩いているうちに、すっかり汗をかいてしまいました。

After walking for 1 hour, I got really hot and bothered and we sat down.

林の中で近づいてきた柴ワンコたち。手前の黒柴と赤柴は、いつもは男性の飼い主さんが連れているのを見かけますが、今日は女性だったので話てみたら、ワンコたちは娘さん夫婦が飼っているのだそうです。黒柴はボー君、３歳、赤柴はテン君、２歳、いずれも男の子。ボー君の名前の由来は、子犬の頃に棒投げをしてもらう遊びが大好きだったので、お孫さんが着けたのだそうです。

少し後ろのほうにいる黒柴は随分前に会ったことがある女の子で、名前は「おこげ」ちゃん、３歳だそうです。

As we were relaxing 3 Shiba Inu dogs came along.  I have seen the two in front (black and red) walking with a younger man, and the lady told me that it is her son-in-law who usually takes them out.  The black one is 3 years old, and the red one 2 years old, both male.  The Black Shiba Inu in the back is a 3 year old girl, with a funny name "Okoge" which means the burned part of over-cooked rice.

３匹は、初めて近づく私に対してはとても懐こかったのに、タイガに対しては警戒気味でした。

All 3 dogs were very friendly towards me when I crouched, and pushed me around with their bodies, but not quite so with Taiga.  Hopefully, there will be a next time.

一番小柄のおこげちゃんが最もタイガに歯をむいていましたが、私にはズカズカ近づいて「撫でろ」を要求してきました。

Okoge, the smallest of the three snarled at Taiga, but demanded rubs from me.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 東京は今日も良い天気。夜明け前に雨が降っていたようで、庭の水やりが不要で楽です。タイガは今朝の散歩も住宅街を選びました。あちこちの庭でサザンカが綺麗に咲いています。

Another beautiful day today.  It rained just before dawn and my garden was well watered, saving me the trouble.  Taiga wanted to walk through the residential area again and so we did.  It is the season for sasanqua flowers and I see so many different varieties walking past people's gardens.

ある家の庭先でこんなものを見かけました。リース用の材料になるらしく、「ご自由にお持ちください」と書いてあります。右は「カヤ」の枝、真ん中は「ヒノキ」だそうです。

I saw these in front of a house: two kinds of fresh branches and woven circles ready to be used for making wreaths.  Each piece of paper says "Please feel free to take".

一番左はツルウメモドキ。ツルウメモドキは盆栽など、小さな木でしか見たことがないので、こんな風に編めるとは知りませんでした。住宅街を歩くようになって気づいたのですが、しゃれたリースを一年中、玄関ドアに掛けている家が時々あります。

こういう丸っこい字を書ける人が羨ましいです。さらに、イラストも上手。イラストがあるのと無いのとでは受ける印象が大きく異なる。

 The woven circles are made of Celastrus orbiculatu, not the holly, since the holly is not indigenous to Japan.  I have noticed in recent years that some houses have a wreath on their front door all year round.  In these cases, the wreaths are not styled in a Christmas way but quietly beautiful.  I love the writer's round letters as well as the illustrations - it makes such a difference.

第三中学の横を通りかかったとき、初めて見る子に会いました。大柄のシェルティーで、レオ君、３歳。タイガに気付かなかったふりをして立ち去ろうとしました。

On our way home, we met a new face: a 3-year old male Shelty, named Leo.  In spite of his large size, he seems to be a shrinking violet.  He tries to get away pretending that he did not see Taiga.

飼い主さんがタイガと挨拶させようとしても、「けっこうです」の態度。

His mom tries to introduce him to Taiga but his demeanour says "No, thank you".

無理強いしたくないので、タイガと早々にその場を離れました。

Since I did not want to force him, we left soon.

すこし歩いたところで、遠くから黒柴のせとかちゃんがタイガを見つけて待ち伏せをしていました。かなり近づいても微動だにしません。

As we continued our walk, we saw Setoka, a female Black Shiba Inu, waiting for Taiga to approach.  Apparently, she spotted us from a distance and had been waiting all the time.

子犬の頃のせとかちゃんはタイガに対してビビった様子でしたが、今では積極的に向かってきます。

As a puppy, she used to be scared of Taiga but now she is very confident and eager to play with her.

せとかちゃんとじゃれているうちに、さっきのレオ君が通りかかりました。相手の性格を察知して強気。

As Setoka and Taiga were renewing their friendship, Leo caught up with us.  Setoka sensed instantly what an easy game he was.

せとかちゃんのシッポに強気が表われています。二人は同い年ですが。。。

Setoka's tail says it all.  She is the stronger of the two, although they both are 3 years old, and Setoka is much smaller in size.

タイガが心配そうに乗り出してきました。

Taiga looks a bit concerned.

レオ君は頭を180度後ろへ向け、せとかちゃんはタイガに「ジャマしないで！」と言わんばかりの目つき。

Leo turns his head away 180 degrees, trying to dissociate himself.  Setoka's eyes tell Taiga "I've got this!  Stay out of it."

何とも不思議な光景でした。

I hope it wasn't too traumatic for Leo.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 昨夜の雨は朝までにはすっかり上がったので、朝食を終えて外に出たときは真っ青な空でした。今朝のタイガは石神井川沿いに、豊島園のあった方角を選びました。いつもの地蔵と献花の場所で小休止。

It rained last night but, by the time I finished breakfast and went outside, the sky was absolutely blue.  Taiga wanted to walk in the opposite direction to the park, along the Shakujii River.  When we came to the jizo statue, we paused as usual.

像は小さくて、いつも鉢植えや切り花に埋もれていますが、誰かがお水を添えてくれたようです。

The jizo here is so tiny and always buried among flowers.  It seems someone had placed a cup of water in front of the statue.

休んだあとは桜並木の細道の散歩を続けます。

After the short rest, we continued our walk.  On this side of the river, we have a long line of cherry trees.

川の向こう側はイチョウ並木で、今は黄葉の時期。

On the other side, the ginkgo trees have turned into golden colour.

桜並木に沿って歩いていると、向こうから初めて見る子が来ました。小さなトイプードルの女の子で、ハッピーちゃん、１歳だそうです。人が大好きだそうで、とても懐こいです。タイガとの様子を見ていると、単にワンコとの社交性をはぐくむ機会が不足しているだけのようです。１歳なら、まだまだワンコの友達をつくる時間があります。そういえば、以前聞いた話によると、この地域はドッグランが無いので有志の人たちが区に働きかけようとしたことがあるそうですが、その運動にはとてつもない意欲とコミットメントが必要なようです。

As we were walking, we met a new face:  a tiny female Toy Poodle, named "Happy", 1 year old.  She likes meeting humans but has not had much opportunity to socialise with dogs.  So, she seemed reluctant to get close to Taiga.  In this area, they do not have a dog park.  Residents in this area once tried to get the Nerima Ward Office to build one, but the movement disappeared since it required unbelievable amount of energy and commitment on the part of the dog owners.

ムリをさせたくないのでその場を去ろうとしたら、空元気が出たらしく必死にタイガの後ろをついて来ようとしました。

As I did not want to force Happy to get to know Taiga, we left.  Suddenly, she got emboldened and tried to follow Taiga.

橋を渡って向こう岸の道を通って帰ります。イチョウ並木が真っ青な空に映えます。春の桜の時期は向こう岸が綺麗ですが、このような青空になることはめったにありません。

We crossed a bridge to walk the other side of the river to go home.  The ginkgo trees made such a contrast against the blue sky background.  When the cherry trees are in full bloom, the other side of the river is very pretty, but we rarely get this kind of blue sky since the climate is usually humid during the cherry blossom season.

いまタイガは10歳半。あと何回、一緒に桜の開花やイチョウの黄葉を楽しめるのか考えさせられます。

Taiga is 10 1/2 years old now and I wonder how many more times we can enjoy cherry blossoms or autumn colours.

ピクニックランチ Picnic lunch in the park

 城北公園の黄葉はピーク（をやや過ぎ？）です。せっかくなので、お弁当を作ってタイガとピクニックランチを楽しみました。

The autumn leaves of deciduous trees in the park are at their peak, and I wanted to take advantage of it by having a picnic lunch.
