換毛？ Winder shedding?

 風邪はまだ完全には治っていませんが、ふと目に留まったタイガのもこもこ毛を引っ張ってみたら最後、ブラッシングは避けられませんでした。

My sore throat lingers in this coldest period of the mid-winter.  However, Taiga's shedding from her legs could not wait.

種無し柚子 多田錦 Seedless Yuzu plant

 ノド風邪で、ここ２週間近く半寝たきり生活をしてきました。原因は自覚しています。このカラカラに乾燥した空気のなかで、夜大口を開けて寝ているからです。ノドがひりひりし始めた頃にマスクをして寝てみましたが、夜中に目がさめるたびにどこかへ吹っ飛んでしまっています。

そうこうしているうちに、元気な間に注文してあった種無し柚子の多田錦が２日前に届いてしまいました。何日も放置しておけないし明日からまた寒波がやってきそうなので、今日重い腰を上げて植え付け。多田錦は以前にも育てたことがありましたが、地植えのベルガモットに高接ぎしてからはリストラしてしまいました。そのベルガモット自体が根腐れで姿を消してしまったので、やり直しです。多田錦は大実柚子より一回り小さいけど種が入らない分果肉が多いので、１個の実から取れる果汁は大実柚子よりも多くなります。

I have had this beastly cold for nearly 2 weeks.  I am not out of the woods yet but feel much better than I did a few days ago.  I know the cause of it - I sleep at night with my mouth wide open!  The climate in Tokyo is extremely dry in winter and we hardly have moisture falling out of the sky for 3 months, during December to February.  In hindsight, it was inevitable.  However, since I had no cold for years, not even in the Covid days, I was getting too careless.

I had placed an order for a seedless Yuzu plant before I got the cold and it arrived 2 days ago.  Since I cannot leave it untouched forever, and also due to another cold spell approaching, I decided to plant it today while it was relatively warm (max temp 12℃).  

Normally, the Yuzu fruit is packed with seeds which leaves less room for flesh.  With the seedless variety called 'Tadanishiki', you are free of stones so long as the flower self-pollinated instead of getting cross pollination from another citrus variety.

フタを開けてみると、季節がらなのか、今年の暦も入っていました。

When I opened the box, I found that they included a calendar, probably as a seasonal goodwill.

いつもはパソコンで見ているので、紙媒体の暦は久しぶりです。

I have not had a calendar in paper form for years, since I use the one on the PC.

何とか植え付けできましたが、ヘロヘロ。用心のため、春まで２階の南向き部屋で過ごさせます。

I managed to plant it but got really exhausted.  In view of the cold months ahead, I am going to keep it in the sunny room upstairs.

パッションフルーツ？ Passion fruits?

 早朝散歩で近所の中学のグランド横で見かけたカラスウリ。イチョウの木に絡まっていますが、すっかり葉っぱが落ちたあとなので実が目立ちます。

This is the vine of snake gourd growing around a ginkgo tree.  With all the leaves gone, the fruits are looking prominent.

形といい、大きさといい、パッションフルーツにそっくりです。

The snake gourd is said to have herbal medicinal uses but, in this day and age, no-one thinks of it as a useful plant. 

Trichosanthes cucumeroides

こちらは去年の11月14日にバルコニーのパッションフルーツのツルを処分したあと、実を取り込んで追熟させておいたものです。外皮が茶色になったものを順次、消費しています。

These are some of the passion fruits that I collected when I cut down the vine in November last year.  The plant served as a 'green curtain' on the balcony during the summer months, next to my bedroom.  These fruits ripen off the tree and I am consuming them as and when they become brown on the outside.  After coming home, I enjoyed some.

今朝の試食。糖度計によると29.8%、実の周辺ではなく真ん中が最も糖度が高くなります。甘味と酸味が煮詰まったような濃厚な味です。

パッションフルーツのツルはグリーンカーテンとしても優秀なので、今年もがんばって育てます。

Sugar content 29.8% - very sweet.  The centre of the fruit is the sweetest.

シンビをもう一鉢 New cymbidium plant

 今日は地元JAが正月明けの営業初日でした。夕方近くに覗いてみたら、ほとんどの組合員の人たちがまだ活動を始めていないらしく、棚はスカスカ。その状況で温室のラン類に関しては、数鉢だけ入荷したシンビジュームが目立っていました。そのうちの一鉢がこれ。

It was the first business day today for the nearby JA after the New Year holiday.  I looked into the place but most of the shelves were looking empty - members are not active yet.  In the greenhouse section, among the few plants that were there, I saw this and brought it home.

好みの色です。花の少ない季節にはこのタイプの花色が元気をくれます。花茎は3本で、どれも開花中。

My favourite colours for cymbidium.  The plant has 3 flower stems with flowers not quite fully open.  I am sure they will last up to the end of February.

部屋に入れる前に恒例のバケツ水に浸し。

As before, I soaked the plant in a bucket of water before taking the pot into the house.

シンビが２鉢になったので、以前からあるシダ類の鉢は移動。賑やかになって、テレビよりもシンビのほうに目が行きます。

They are a bit loud - instead of watching the TV, my eyes wander towards the flowers.

花が終わったら春に株分けしてそれぞれ２鉢ずつにする予定ですが、来年の今頃も花が見られるといいなあ。YouTubeで株分けの仕方をデモンストレーションしている動画が複数あるので活用します。

I will separate each of the plant into two, after the flowers are gone in spring.  I have found several videos on YouTube in which growers demonstrate how to do it.

早めに夕方散歩に出ました。通りかかった幼児専用の公園ではロウバイが咲き始めていました。梅よりも先に咲くようです。

We went out for our evening walk early.  When we passed by the park dedicated to toddlers, I noticed flowers opening on wintersweet trees.  They bloom early, before Ume plum trees.

素芯八重咲きです。何とも良い香り。

The scent is out of this world.

Calycanthus fertilis

優雅な金魚にうっとり Beautiful Gold Fish

 数か月前、散歩中に見かけた巨大な金魚の今の様子を見に行きました。この寒い季節でも元気に泳ぎ回っているのにびっくり。優雅な動きに吸い込まれるように見入ってしまいました。個人のお宅なので動画に関する許可を求めたら、快諾していただけました。

I saw these beautiful gold fish some months ago while walking with Taiga.  I was curious to see how they were in this cold weather - they were just as active as before.  The fish are beautiful and move in such an elegant way that I could watch them for hours, if the fish tanks were not placed by the side of a public street.  They belong to a private house in a residential area so, before uploading the video, I asked for the owner's permission which was given readily.

シンビ蕾の世話 Flower bud stems of cymbidium

 昨夜の雨は止んで、今朝の散歩のときまでには青空でした。タイガは相変わらずカメラ撮影に非協力的。

Last night's rain was up by the time we went out for our morning walk.  As usual, Taiga was not interested in posing for the camera.

帰宅して、ここ数日「やらなければ」と思っていたことを実行しました。暮に買ったシンビジュームの蕾の茎が順調に伸びてきて、そろそろ支柱が必要なときです。

After coming home, I decided to do what I had in my mind for the last few days.  The flower bud stems are growing and they need props to stay upright when the flowers are open.

蘭用の支柱というのを買ってきました。2種類ありましたが、直立用の太いほう。細いのはたぶん、胡蝶蘭のように花茎がおじぎする格好に作るため、曲げて使うのだと思います。

まずはこの大きいほう。

The wire props I got are made specially for orchids with large and heavy flowers.  You can also get finer wire props which are meant for bending the flower stem.  To bend these large cymbidium stems would require a special skill, I think.

２か所で止めて、今後の成長につれて増やしていきます。

For the moment, two points to tie the larger stem.

こちらは株の後ろのほうにある出遅れの蕾。

This is the smaller stem growing at the back of the plant.

この茎はまだ一か所で十分。

Just one point is enough for now.

完了です。テレビの横にあるのを毎日見ていると段々と愛着がわいてきて、以前よりも綺麗な花に見えます。花には芳香はなく生のアスパラガスのような匂いがしますが、イヤな臭いではありません。

Done.  I am hoping that the smaller stem at the back will gradually grow towards the front - after all, that is where the plant gets the most light.

週に一度の水やりで、バケツ水に30分ほどつけておきました。後で取りに来たら、今日の強風で地面に倒れていました！

Before taking the plant into the house, I soaked the pot in a bucket of water.  I am supposed to do this once a week during the winter months when the plant is kept indoors.  When I came to retrieve the plant, the strong wind (it was a very windy day) had knocked it down to the ground!

でも、ダメージは見当たらないのでラッキー、と思っています。

Happily, it looked none the worse for the fall.

 明けましておめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願いいたします。

年末まで樹上完熟させた「石地フリー」みかんが甘くて美味しいです。昨年は裏年でしたが、数が少ない分、味が濃厚になりました。

いま地元の民家の庭先でいろんなサザンカが咲き誇っています。種類が豊富で甲乙つけがたく、散歩中の目の保養になります。

We are having an unusually mild weather which makes daily walk very enjoyable.  The sasanqua trees in my neighbourhood are in full bloom.  They come into season one after another and it is such a spectacle to watch.  After the sasanquas in November to the end of January, we can look forward to camellias during January to the end of March.

正月用の花 Flowers for the New Year

 昨日、玄関の内外および門のところのタイルと壁を、ナイロンタワシと石鹸水でガリガリ掃除しました。その後、正月用に買っておいたピンクの寒菊を玄関前に置きました。

I am in the middle of the 'big clean' ahead of the New Year.  This is customary in Japan and I cannot welcome the New Year without doing it however I hate cleaning the house.  After scrubbing the tiles and walls of the gate and the porch yesterday, I placed the  pink winter chrysanthemum that I bought for the coming festive season.

開花を遅らせるために日陰に引っ込めてありましたが、どうやら正月まで持ちこたえそう。

This plant should be in full bloom over the New Year period.

慣れない大掃除で腰が痛いので気晴らしに地元JAを覗いてみました。数日前から気にかかっていた花がまだ有るか興味あったので。テーブルシンビジュームのピンク系です。数株あったのが、この１鉢だけ残っていました。しかも、数株あるうち私が一番気にっていた苗です。ラッキーと思って念のため周りを見渡したところ、

After the unusually hard work with the cleaning yesterday, I went to the JA this morning to look at the flowers.  I was particularly interested in the orchid I saw several days ago.  It was still there, although its siblings had disappeared from the shelf.  This is a miniature version of the normal cymbidium, called 'table cymbidium' for its size.  However, before I picked it up,

普通サイズ（大型）のシンビジュームが目に入りました。３株あるうち、背後にある苗に惹かれました。

I also saw these normal sized ones, which are quite large.  One of them, the one in the back, particularly caught my eyes.

これです。他の株は花茎が２本ずつ有るだけなのに、これは今咲いている２本に加え、蕾状態のがもう２本あって同じ2,000円です。しかも、あのテーブルシンビジュームより500円安い。あー、値段に影響されやすい私です。どう考えてもこちらの方がグッドバリューに思えてなりません。また、あのテーブルサイズのカワイイ苗だと、テレビの横で埋もれてしまうかも....

The other two plants had only 2 flower stems each, but this one has 2 stems with open flowers and, in addition, it has 2 stems with firm flower buds yet to open.  The three plants were all priced at 2,000 yen.  Considering everything, this plant seemed such a good value.  Also, compared with the 'table' one priced at 2,500 yen with only 1 flower stem, this with 4 flower stems would provide me with flowers to the end of March next year.  (The flowers of cymbidium can easily last a few months in winter.)

ということで、普通サイズの方を連れ帰りました。

So, I came home with this one.

この苗の後ろ側に蕾の花茎がもう1本あります。シンビは普通でも軽く１か月以上花が持ちますが、この苗は蕾つきがもう２本あるので、開花が全部終わるのは３月末頃でしょう。

As already mentioned, this plant has two stems with flower buds: one is obvious in the picture, and the other one is growing at the back of the plant.

部屋に入れるまえに水やり。シンビの場合、水を注ぐよりはこうやってバケツ水にどっぷりつけておくのが良いそうです。これを開花中は１週間に一度やるそうです。

Before I took the plant into the house, I placed the pot in a bucket full of water.  According to the expert on YouTube, this way of watering is recommended for cymbidium.  During the winter months, do this once a week.

水切りした後は居間へ移動。

After 1/2 hour, I took the pot into the living room.

うぅーん、ちょっとデカ過ぎたかも。でも、あのテーブルシンビだと存在感が無さすぎだったろうと思います。

Well, this plant may be a bit on the large side, but the 'table' version would have been obscured in the same spot.

豆柴子犬ケビンと With Kevin, the Miniature Black Shiba Inu puppy

 以前撮った映像がまだスマホに残っていたので、ケビンママの許可を得てビデオを作りました。

I found the footage left in my phone, which I took some time ago.  So I made this video with the permission from the owner of the Shiba puppy.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 今朝も寒いけど雲ひとつない青空で、快適な散歩でした。公園の落葉樹は、このようにまだ葉っぱが残っている木はほとんど無くなりました。

Another crispy morning with blue sky.  This ginkgo tree is one of the very few left with leaves still hanging - it really feels like winter.

初めて会ったカワイイ子。２歳のミミちゃん。犬種は聞き忘れましたが、小さなポメちゃんのようです。

A new face: tiny female Pomeranian, named Mimi, 2 years old, with a very sweet disposition.

超小型にも拘わらず全くものおじせず、のんびりした性格です。

In spite of her tiny size, she is easy-going and afraid of nothing.  

いつものルートを回ったあとは、公園出口の草地で一休み。

After walking the usual route, we sat down before leaving the park.

おやつの「マテ」をしている間、より目になっているタイガ。

Taiga's eyes look cross-eyed as she waits for the go-ahead for her treat.

帰り道、近所のゴロウとばったり出会いました。タイガはゴロウのストーカーになるほど大好きなので、ゴロウの散歩に付き合うことにしました。

On our way home, we ran into Goro, our neighbour's Shiba-Labrador mix.  Taiga likes him so much that she behaves like a stalker.  So, we decided to walk with Goro, which was a welcome extra morning walk for Taiga.

そこへ、最近公園デビューした黒い豆柴のケビンがやって来ました。ゴロウと会うのは初めて。いつものように大興奮です。以前会ったときより月齢がひとつ増えて現在生後５か月だそうです。

There came Kevin, the tiny Black Shiba Inu puppy we recently met.  He is now 5 months old and just as excitable as before.  Apparently, he has had several encounters with other older dogs who have scolded him for being too excited.

そもそも大人のワンコにとって大興奮状態の子犬は苦手なのですが、ゴロウは14-5歳の高齢なので更に厳しい状況に置かれました。

Grown up dogs normally do not like over-excited puppies.  Moreover, Goro is 14-5 years old with wobbly hind legs.  So, the situation was doubly undesirable for him.

ケビンの興奮が収まらないので、ゴロウがたしなめました。

Since Kevin's excited behaviour showed no abatement, Goro decided to put an end to it.

全然効果ありません。

It had no effect on Kevin.

この写真は帰宅後に動画から書き出したものです。ゴロウが目で私たちに訴えています。ゴロウママも私もこれに気付かずに、介入することなく軽くケビンに注意した程度でした。高齢のゴロウにはきつかっただろうな、と私は今になって反省しています。

I got this photo out of the video when I was going through it at home.  Goro's eyes are appealing to his mom and me for help.  Neither his mom nor I noticed it and we chided Kevin lightly, without intervening.  Now I feel sorry for Goro who was too old to handle the situation.

誰も助けてくれないので、ゴロウが再度たしなめています。

As he got no help from us, Goro decides to take the matter into his own hands.

このあたりで私たちがやっとケビンを止めに入りました。

At this point, we put a stop to Kevin's behaviour.

この写真はタイガが助けに入ったのではなく、単にケビンが興奮の矛先をタイガに向けただけです。タイガは左前足を上げて警戒気味ですが、他のワンコを躾けようとはしません。

This photo does not mean that Taiga came to rescue her idol.  Kevin simply redirected his excitement towards Taiga.  Taiga lifts her left paw, but I have never seen her teach manners to other dogs.
