日南の姫の回復 Tangerine recovering

 今日は一日を通して雨。午後から夕方にかけて雷を伴う激しい雨になりました。久しぶりに植物の世話を全くしなくても良い日でした。

It rained all day today.  In the afternoon, heavy rain was accompanied by a series of lightning and thunder.  The weather gave me a break from gardening for a change.

暖かい恵みの雨のなか、去年の夏にバルコニーで枯死寸前までいったミカン「日南の姫」の葉っぱが展開しています。うちのバルコニーは真夏に灼熱の砂漠になるので、これまでいくつかの果樹がカリカリになって、急遽 庭に避難させたことがあります。

Thanks to the warm nurturing rain, the tangerine plant that nearly died on the balcony started to show signs of recovery with new leaves growing.  My balcony in the summer becomes like a desert with scorching sun, and I have had several fruit trees nearly dying.

濃い緑色の葉っぱは去年から生き残ったもので、浅緑色のはここ２，３日の芽吹き。雨のおかげで、あっという間に葉が拡大。

The dark leaves are those that grew in autumn last year, after the tree was brought downstairs.  The light green leaves are from recent new buds, now expanding in the warm rain.

苗が生命の危機を感じてか、花がたくさん着いています。タイガの散歩に横を通ったとき、雨の中でも良い香りが漂ってきました。
The plant probably sensed the risk of death and now it is trying to ensure its legacy by producing fruits/seeds, thus lots of flowers on such a small tree.  A beautiful scent from the flowers reached me even in the heavy rain, when I passed by to take Taiga out for a walk.

コーネリアンチェリー・パイオニア Cornelian cherry 'Pioneer'

 おととい注文した苗が今日の午後２時-４時の時間帯に配達される予告を受けたので、午前中に鹿沼土と花の用土を買いに近所のJAへ行きました。ついでにミニトマト苗とベゴニアをゲット。

The cornelian cherry plant that I ordered two days ago was expected to arrive between 2-4 o'clock this afternoon.  So, I went to the nearby JA to get the two kinds of soil I always use.  Since I was there, I also got a cherry tomato plant and a pot of begonia.

リーガーベゴニアの仲間で、開花期間がとても長いそうです。

This is one of the Rieger begonias, whose flowering periods are said to be extremely long.

私はベゴニア苗を今まで買ったことが無かったのですが、鉢増しするために元の鉢から出してみてビックリ。苗は数本のプラスチック支柱でサポートされてこぢんまりした外観になっていたことが分かりました。それを鉢から出したとたん、数本の茎があちこちの方角に倒れ始めて収集がつかないほど。何とか大きな鉢に詰め込んだあと、付属の支柱を全部使って茎を支えましたが、だいぶ開帳型に変身しました。急に苗が大きく立派になりました。

I have never had a begonia plant before, not even the primitive type with tiny flowers.  When I took the plant out of the original pot, I was surprised to see that the stems had been supported by several plastic sticks, which made the whole plant look compact.  So, the moment I held the root system in my hand, the large stems began to part from each other.  I somehow managed to repot the plant in a larger pot, with the plant looking much more open.  It looked as if it had grown large in an instant.

ずっと眺めているうちに愛着がわいてきました。ワクワクしながらこの苗を眺めていると、午後に配達予定のコーネリアンチェリー苗を余裕で待つことができました。

As I kept looking at the plant, I began to like it more and more.  In this happy state, I was able to wait for the arrival of the cornelian cherry plant without getting impatient.

午後になって、その苗が届きました。コーネリアンチェリーの「パイオニア」で、入手できるとは思ってもいなかった品種です。そもそも、20年くらい前にコーネリアンチェリーが巧みなマーケティングで人気になったものの、あっという間に注目されなくなり、苗の販売業者はコーネリアンチェリーから撤退の一途を辿ったという印象です。現在、かろうじて「ショリコ」などを載せているショップはありますが、大実のパイオニアはどこも在庫なしです。それが偶然、セールで販売されているのを見て迷わず注文しました。既に育てている「カザンラク」は自家結実する品種ですが、他品種もあれば安心です。パイオニアはカザンラクほどではないけど大実で、海外のサイトによると、完熟すると種を取り出しやすくなるとのことです。一方、トルコ産のコーネリアンチェリーのジャムは種が入ったままの実だそうで（それではコンポートと言ったほうが正確）、よほど粘核性なのがうかがえます。それが、種を取り出しやすいというなら、本当のジャムを作れるはずです。

In the afternoon, the plant was delivered.  This is 'Pioneer', the variety that seemed impossible to obtain.  More than 15 years ago, plant sellers introduced cornelian cherries into Japan with clever marketing.  A lot of gardeners jumped at the opportunity to get these trees.  However, the popularity disappeared just as quickly as it was created.  Since then, shops have been fast getting out of cornelian cherries, and only one or two varieties such as Jolico are still left in stock.  As to Pioneer, it has completely disappeared, since it was one of the popular varieties for the larger fruits.  However, to my great surprise, I happened to see Pioneer on sale, and I immediately placed an order.  Now, the fruits of Pioneer may not be as large as those of Kazanlak, but, according to an overseas site, the stone comes off easily when the fruit is fully ripe.  This, to me, is a great advantage.  Without stones, I would be able to make really nice jam or smoothy.

これがその苗。小さく見えても、セールで800円だったので、苗の希少性も考慮すると、私にはエクセレントバリューに思えます。

This is the plant.  It may look small but, considering it was priced only 800 yen on sale and the near impossibility to get this variety now, it represents an excellent value to me.

The roots seem healthy, and they are abundant.

10号ロングスリット鉢に植え付けました。
I planted it in a 30cm diameter pot with slits at the bottom for good drainage.

こちら↓は２年前に買ったカザンラク。この秋までに、来年用の蕾を是非見たいものです。

This is Kazanlak that I bought 2 years ago.  I would love to find flower buds for next year, by the end of this summer.

新苗を植え付けてすっかり安心。ジッとガマンで待っていたタイガと公園へ行きました。

Having planted the new tree, I felt relieved and took Taiga to the park, feeling grateful for her patience.

散々歩き回ったあと、公園出口の広場でタイガが座り込み。散歩を待たされた分、ワガママを通せると感知しているようです。

After ambling through the park, we came to the field near the exit.  It seems Taiga had a sense of entitlement for having waited long for the afternoon walk, and she sat down refusing to go home yet.

急にスリゴロまで始めました。

She even started rolling over the grass.

満足？

Her back was covered with bits of dry grass.

ナツメなど Jujubes etc

 月末恒例のナツメ成長記録。毎日眺めていると変化を感じられないですが、ひと月ごとなら何とか違いが分かります。自分の衣替えをした4月20日以降、ナツメの新苗はバルコニーに出しっぱなしにしています。手前の３鉢が新苗、奥の伸び伸びになっているのは去年の夏に買った皇帝棗。

This is the month-end reporting on the progress of new jujube trees.  Looking at them every single day, I can hardly see any difference, but one month brings about a lot of changes.  The three new plants that arrived in December last year spent the winter indoor, and I finally put them out on 20th April (the three little plants in front).  The lanky tree at the back is the Emperor jujube that I bought last summer.

まずは皇帝棗。3月31日の芽吹き始めた状態から、一気に育ちました。写真のAとBの枝は新しい部分が既に40cm超えになっています。

Emperor:  since the plant started budding as in the photos of 31st March, it grew rapidly.  The branches A and B are now over 40cm.

節と節の間が長い。

Inter-node distance is long.

新苗のほうは、見やすいように壁紙を背景に写真を撮りました。左から、早脆王、蟠棗、無核金絲棗。

I brought the new plants into the room so that we can see them better against the pale wall.  From left to right, Early Crisp King, Panzao, and Seedless Gold Thread.

早脆王：一番長い枝は30cmくらいになっています。が、上２本の枝が異常に早く伸びて、下の３本目は伸び悩み。

Early Crisp King: the longest branch is about 30cm.  While the first two branches are exceptionally long, the third branch (at the bottom) is struggling.

数日前に開花した花はまだ着いてはいるけど受粉していないよう。正常に受粉していたなら、直ちに花の中央に突起ができて育ち始めるはず。

The first flower that opened several days ago is still there, but I do not believe that it is viable.  If the flower got pollinated properly, the centre of the flower should have started protruding and growing into a young fruit.

蟠棗：枝ぶりは３品種のなかで最もバランスのとれた育ちかたをしています。でも葉っぱが小さいままなので、開花も遠いはず。

Panzao: this tree is growing in the most balanced manner of the three.  However, the leaves remain tiny, which means that flowers will not open for some time yet.

無核金絲：最近、成長ストップでもしかた？と疑うほど変化がない。

Seedless Gold Thread: recently, I often wondered if the tree wants to grow at all.

右の無核金絲は早脆王の次に芽吹き、蟠棗が最後に動きだしましたが、今では枝の成長ぶりで蟠棗に遅れをとっています。結果的に枝の展開は、苗が配達された当時の根っこの量の多い順番と同じになりました。すなわち、早脆王 ＞ 蟠棗 ＞ 無核金絲

Seedless Gold Thread (right) started budding after Early Crisp King, followed by Panzao who came last.  However, in terms of branches growing, Seedless Gold Thread is getting behind that of Panzao now.  In the end, the growths of branches reflected the amounts of roots at the time of plant delivery in December last year, i.e., Early Crisp King ＞ Panzao ＞ Seedless Gold Thread.

今日も良い天気で公園は清々しい初夏の空気でした。

Another fine day today, and we had a pleasant walk in the park with the fresh, early summer air.

日陰伝いに歩いたあとは、帰る前にベンチでおやつ。手作りの鶏むね肉のジャーキーです。一旦冷凍したむね肉を冷凍庫から出して、よく切れるナイフで薄く削ぎ、直射日光で自然乾燥。今の時期、すぐにカリカリに乾燥します。

We picked our way from one shaded area to another.  We sat at a bench for Taiga's treat before heading home.  This is home-made chicken breast jerky.  I make it by freezing chicken breast meet, take it out of the freezer, and make paper-thin slices.  Spread the slices on baking sheets and dry in the sun.

帰ろうとして草地を横切っていたら、タイガが突然座り込んでしまいました。雑草が冷たくて気持ち良いようです。

While crossing a field on our way home, Taiga suddenly crouched on the grass.  She was obviously enjoying the cool grass.

リードを引っ張っても、そっぽを向いて拒否。

When I pulled the leash, she looked away refusing to budge.

まあ、私はヒマ人間なので付き合うことにしました。

Well, I have all the time in the world, so I sat on the cool grass, too.

草地の横を幼馴染が通りかかったので、タイガはバネ仕掛けのように飛び起きて挨拶。テリアミックスのフウちゃん（左）とビションフリーゼのビっちゃん（右）。

Taiga sprang to her feet when she spotted familiar faces walking by the field.  They are Taiga's puppyhood friends: Fu, a terrier mix (left), and Bi, Bichon Frise (right).

散歩など Walk etc

 昨日は夕方以降 本降りになって、夜の間にたっぷり植物が水を吸ったので、今朝の公園は緑が生き生きとしていました。

It rained heavily from late afternoon and through the night yesterday.  After that, plants looked fresh and vigorous everywhere in the park.

城北中央公園の林を通ってドッグランとその近くの花壇を見ながら歩くことにしました。

We walked through the woods of Johoku Central Park, heading towards the dog park and the flower bed nearby.

ラン側の花壇は花盛り。有志の方々が管理しているとは思えないほどのプロレベル。

The flower bed is in full bloom.  It is so well maintained that I can hardly believe this is managed by amateur volunteers.

優しい色のジャーマンアイリス

Soft and beautiful colour of German Iris.

キスゲの仲間？随分と早い開花。

Flowers belonging to the Hemerocallis family, already in bloom?  

これはフヨウの仲間で、以前調べたら、「アニソドンテア・マルバストロイデス」というのがヒットしました。冬の間も残った花がかろうじて咲いていました。この木は遠くから見ると大きなピンクのカスミソウのよう。花壇の１枚目の写真、上のほうに写り込んでいるピンクのかたまりがこの木。

This tree has flowers looking like tiny hibiscus.  Looking up, I got the name 'Anisodontea malvastroides'.  The tree had some flowers barely surviving in the winter.  When you look at this tree from a distance, it looks like the pink variety of 'baby's breath'.  In the first photo of the flower bed above, the tree is shown in the upper part of the photo.

暑いなかの散歩で疲れたので、ベンチでオヤツタイムしてから帰りました。

It was getting warm, and we were tired.  So, we had a rest at a bench before going home.

先日 授粉作業が終わったリンゴの幼果が順調に育っています。もう少し優劣がはっきりしてきたら摘果をして、ひとつのクラスターに1個だけ残します。

After all the cross-pollinating work on the apple trees, young fruits are now growing nicely.  When the difference in size becomes more prominent, I will be removing the smaller ones, thereby leaving only the largest in a cluster.

The following 3 photos are of Granny Smith.

こちらは赤肉リンゴの紅の夢。幼果の時点で既にまるで日焼けしたような赤茶色が部分的に出るので、グラニースミスと区別しやすい。

These are red-fleshed cooking apple, Kurenai-no-Yume.  Even at this stage, there is a hint of red on the surface of the young fruit, which makes it easy to tell apart the from Granny Smith.
