公園で At the park

 公園へ行く途中の駐車場でタイガが動かなくなりました。フェンスの向こう、車体の下に猫がいるらしいですが、私には見えません。

When we passed by a a car park near home, Taiga got rivetted - she saw a cat sitting under a car.

金網の下に鼻を突っ込んで夢中です。

She wants to go over there, but no way.  Cats in this area are very audacious - they spit at Taiga and they actually come out onto the street and follow us at a brisk pace.  If we stop and turn around, the cat stops.  When we resume our walk, the cat stalks us again.  I can laugh at it in the day time, but when they do this during our evening walk, it is quite scary in the dark.

散歩中に出会う猫って、ものすごく気が強いです。塀の向こうからタイガに威嚇したかと思うと、私たちが通り過ぎたあとも、道路に出てきて後を追いかけて来るのです。昼間は笑えますが、夜の散歩でこれをやられるとコワイです。こちらが立ち止まると猫も足を止め、私たちがまた歩き出すと足を速めてついて来ます。

公園に着くと、この時期、私の大好きな香り３選（スイカズラ、ナツメ、シナノキ）のひとつが漂ってきました。シナノキ（科の木）が満開です。自宅でナツメの花の香りをかいだあと、公園にくるとシナノキの香り。もう天国の気分です。

At the park, Japanese linden trees were in full bloom - the scent is so intoxicating.

It's like being in heaven.

小さくて地味な花ですが、アップで見ると可愛いです。

それにしても暑い。木陰から出て向こうの林に着くまで何秒この暑い日差しに晒されるのかと思うと、動く気になりません。

The sun is so strong and it takes determination to go out of the nice shade to reach the woodland across the field.

やっと、公園上のほうに移動して売店広場に到着。タイガは肩で息をしています。

At last, we reached the upper part of the park, near the food court.

木陰が心地よいので、腰掛けてタイガのオヤツタイム。

The shop was closed this morning so we sat down for Taiga's treat time.

オヤツの後はドッグランへは寄らずに帰ることにしました。

It was too hot to go to the dog park and we started to go home.

公園出口の草の上でタイガが動かなくなりました。草が冷たくて気持ち良いようです。

Taiga couldn't move and sat down in the field near the exit.

と、友達のシーちゃん。二人とも大興奮です。

There comes Shion, a friend we have not seen for a few weeks.

今日はもう知っているワンコには会えないのかと思っていた矢先でした。シーちゃんたちも同様だったそうで、やはりこう暑いと皆さん早めに散歩を切り上げているのでしょう。

Shion was the only familiar face we saw this morning and, likewise, Taiga was the only one they saw.  The hot weather sends dogs home earlier.

シーちゃんは保護された元野犬なので親はどんな個体だったのか分かりませんが、尻尾の毛が長くてとてもユニークです。顔や体は、ほんの少しハスキーか黒柴っぽいです。

暑いし陽ざしが強いので、目がショボショボ。

The sunlight is so strong that Shion cannot keep her eyes open.

それでもカメラ目線になってくれました。

Still, she gives me a nice smile.

ナツメ開花 Jujube flowers

 ナツメの開花が始まりました。今満開なのはスーパージャイアントと和田玉棗の小苗。地植えにした新疆棗王は、まだチラホラ開花が始まったばかりですが、花のサイズは他の２品種のよりずっと大きくてしっかりしています。

スーパージャイアントは南側バルコニーに置いてあります。苗は去年になって急に成長して、おびただしい数の蕾が出ています。今年こそは、と期待しています。栽培初年度にビー玉サイズの実が数個生りましたが、甘くてとても気に入りました。うちにある品種の中で生食に最も適していると思います。

'Super Giant' with lots of flowers.  The plant grew significantly since the start of spring this year and I have never seen so many flower buds, so I am hoping that some fruits will come out of this.

毎日、様々な小さい虫がやってきて花の上を這いつくばっているので、いくらかは授粉に役立っていると思います。それにしても、花は良い香り。

The scent of the flowers is unbelievable.

東側バルコニーの和田玉棗。苗が小さいので花数は少ないです。

'Hetian Jujube' plant is still tiny.  This variety produces very large fruits but I personally feel that this variety is better as dried rather than eaten fresh like the Super Giant.

これら３つの丸いのは、開花直後の状態。このまま緑色で２週間ほどたてば結実の希望がもてますが、３-４日のうちに色がクリーム色になると、落ちます。

These 3 round things are how they look just after flowering.  If pollination was successful, they will remain green for weeks but, if they turn pale, they will fall off.

ナスのグラタン Eggplant Gratin

 スーパーで大きな米ナスを見かけたので、ひき肉、デーツ、クルミなどが入ったグラタンを作りました。デーツの甘酸っぱい味とクルミの香ばしさがお肉を引き立てています。

I made a gratin dish with eggplant and minced meat, together with dried dates and walnuts.  Please see the video:

ローガンベリー収穫 Loganberry

 ローガンベリーのワイマテがついに熟し始めました。綺麗な赤色の段階を通り越して、灰色っぽいくすんだ色になり、ガクが赤茶色になっています。

Loganberry 'Waimate' is ripening at last.

この辺のは根本近くかつ日当たりが良い場所で熟しています。

When it becomes grayish and dark red, they are ready for picking.

ツルの先のほうは家の北側になるので、まだまだ色づきの初期段階です。

These are just starting to turn red, being at the north side of the house.

でも、こうやってぶら下がっている光景は綺麗です。

引っ張って取れてくるものを収穫しました。味は、普通にラズベリーだと思います。

公園で At the park

 寝坊して、公園に着いたのが遅かったからか犬散歩の人影がありません。

We got up late this morning and, when we arrived at the park, we hardly saw anyone, with or without dogs.

人出自体、なぜかほとんどないです。

タイガは最近の暑さが苦手らしく、朝散歩は以前より早めに切り上げるようになりました。自分で「もう帰ろう」と決めたら、こうやってオヤツを催促してきます。私は２，３年前まではリーダーシップウォークを意識して散歩していましたが、もう８歳で落ち着いたので、散歩にかける時間も方角についても、タイガの望むようにしています。

As the weather is getting warm, Taiga's morning walk is getting shorter.  When she decides that she has had enough, she stops and asks for a treat before going home.

帰ろうとして四中横の草地を通ったら、近所のウメちゃんが木陰でくつろいでいるところでした。この公園で見かける紀州犬はウメちゃんだけになってしまったほど稀少な犬種です。タイガを見て喜んで近づいてきました。タイガも嬉しくて小躍りしています。

On our way home, we met Ume who was resting in the shade with her mom.  When she saw Taiga, she came rushing towards us, while Taiga was jumping with joy, too. Ume is a beautiful, female Kishu-ken.  What's more, she is the only Kishu I see in this area - even rarer than Kaiken.

うちとは20メートルほどしか離れていないご近所ですが、散歩の時間帯がズレているらしく、めったに会えないです。

She lives only about 20 metres away from my house, but we hardly meet due to different habits and lifestyles.  So, when we do run into each other, we all get excited.

ウメちゃんのほうがタイガより１歳上ですが、年下のようにタイガに甘えてきました。

Ume is one year older than Taiga but she snuggles up to Taiga as if she were the younger of the two.

本当はタイガに遊んでほしいのですが、ウメちゃんはワンコとの遊び方を知らないのでじれったそうです。

Ume had not been socialised until she met Taiga, thus the awkward way in which she invites Taiga to play.

せっかくの機会なのでふたり揃った写真を撮ろうと人間たちはたくらみましたが、ウメちゃんがこっちを向いてもタイガは向こうを見るし、

Since it is rare for us to meet, we wanted to take a photo of them sitting together.  However, if Ume looked towards the camera, Taiga looked away.

またはその逆。

And, vice versa.

今度はふたりとも横向き。

Now they are synchronising,

カメラの方は向かないけど、せめてシンクロ？

but still not facing the camera.

ふたりとも、いい加減にしてよ！

Come on, you two!

そのうち、ふたりして草についた臭いかぎ。

Now they started sniffing the grass together.

ふたり一緒の行動をとって、ほほえましいです。

It is so nice to see Ume enjoying herself and being with another dog.

人間がしつこく要求するので、やっと二人並んでくれました。

We kept coaxing them to stand together to face the camera.

ウメちゃんがまたキス。

Ume started kissing Taiga again - so cute.

やっと、ふたり同時にカメラの方を向きました。それにしても、紀州犬は優雅です。甲斐犬が野武士のイメージなら、紀州犬は血筋の良い侍、という印象です。

At last, both facing the camera!  Ume is such a beautiful specimen of her breed and I really love watching her.

ローガンベリー試し採り Loganberry

 ここ２日間、雨が降らなかったので、ローガンベリーのワイマテが色づいてきました。

It has not rained for the last 2 days and Waimate berries are turning red.

まだまだ綺麗な赤い色なので完熟ではありません。

Waimate, when fully ripe, should have a tinge of purple, so these beautiful red berries are not yet ready for harvesting.

が、待ちきれないのでこの１個を試食することにしました。ヘタがちょっとだけ茶色っぽくなっています。でも、結構力をいれないと取れてきませんでした（やっぱりまだ未熟）。無理に引っ張ったので、柔らかい果肉が一部つぶれてしまいました。

Nevertheless, I decided to try this one, being impatient - after all, this is the first year of fruiting and I am dying to know how it tastes.

その１個をもって玄関に入ると、タイガがうずうずしていました。蚊が出るようになったので、タイガを外に出したままにはしません。

When I opened the door with the berry in my hand, Taiga thought it was a treat for her because I was beaming from ear to ear.

その大事な１個。果長を測ると3cm+ ありました。

Lengthwise, it measured a little over 3cm.  It really resembles Tayberry.

ついでに糖度計も登場。12.8度もありました。ベリーとしては立派です。でも、食感は酸味のほうが勝っていた印象です。これからがシーズンなので、もっと良くなるでしょう。

しかも、カメムシが発生する前から熟すなんて有難いです。

The sugar content was 12.8% which is quite high for a berry.  I am looking forward to picking them as they ripen over the next several weeks.  The good thing is, they come into season before the stink bug appears.
