公園で At the park

 先日やっと草刈りがされた四中横の広場。刈った後の草丈がガタガタです。いつもの草刈り用の車ではなく、人が機械を左右に振りながらこの広大な草地を刈っていた結果です。２，３回雨が降ればまたボウボウになりそうですが、とりあえず今は歩きまわれる状態。

We went to the field where they were cutting the grass the other day.  Unfortunately, the grass is not smooth - the lawn mower vehicle is out of order and they cut the grass mannually with the thing that you hang from your shoulder.

タイガも嬉しそう。

At least Taiga is enjoying herself.

数日前にシャンプーしたばかりなのに草風呂でゴロゴロ。

She starts rolling about, forgetting that she had her shampoo only a few days ago.

気配を感じてガバっと起き上がりました。

She suddenly gets up, sensing her friend's arrival.

近所のジャックラッセルのマーク君です。タイガが子犬のとき公園デビューした日に会って以来、大の仲良しです。

Mark, my neighbour's Jack Russell Terrier, has arrived.  They met on the day when Taiga came to the park for the first time as a puppy.  They have been fast friends ever since.

ケシの実のケーキ Poppy Seed Cake

 ブルーポピーシードでケーキを作りました。フワフワ生地に膨らませる秘訣は重曹と酸の反応で、焼きあがると元の2倍になります。生地はしっとりフワフワ。

I made a blue poppy seed cake.  Due to the baking soda and acidity reaction, the size of the baked cake became double the original amount of the batter.  The txture is very moist and fluffy.

シャンプー後の散歩 A walk after shampoo

 今日は言葉にならないほど蒸し暑くて、午後に散歩など絶対したくない日でしたが、タイガの獣臭がかなりキツくなっていたのでシャンプーしたあと、ご褒美の散歩。城北公園のクロネコヤマトの向いの草地まで何とか辿り着いて、ベンチで一休みすることにしました。草ボウボウなのでベンチが埋もれそうです。

It was a sultry afternoon today and going out for a walk was the last thing I wanted to do.  However, Taiga's smell was getting rather strong, so I gave her a shampoo, after which we went out to the park.  The grass was growing so vigorously that the benches were almost buried.

一休みイコール、タイガのオヤツです。この出っ腹でオヤツ？と思うかもしれませんが、

It being one of Taiga's treat spot, she got up onto the bench with an hopeful smile.

タイガの期待を裏切ることはできません。嬉しそうに待っています。

道を挟んで隣の四中横の草地では、ついに草刈りが実行されていました。ここは間もなく恒例の防災訓練が行われるので必要にせまられて、のようです。都合はどうあれ、とにかく嬉しい。

In the field across the street, they were cutting the grass - at last!  However, they are doing this, not for the benefit of park users, but because they have the annual fire drill soon which is a big event.  Nevertheless, this is good news for us dog owners.

挿し木で来年用にパッションフルーツの苗を２本作っておいたのを、昨日の霧雨のなか、鉢増ししました。雨の日にこれをすると、植物が弱らずにすみます。

I made two new passion fruit plants from cuttings for next year.  The plant on the balcony with fruits will come to the end of its service before winter, and these two plants will be spending the winter indoors.

これから越冬用の樹形作りです。今伸びているツルを切り戻して子ヅルを沢山出して、その上で春までに孫ヅルを出しておくと、来年の初夏にはグングン育つでしょう。Youtubeでオーストラリアの個人の庭の様子を見た事あります。その動画ではパッションフルーツのツルが日本の葛のツルのように広い庭にはびこっていました。気候が合っているので地植えのままですが、どの品種も５年くらいで寿命という扱いだそうです。

こちらは今年の５月末に某ネットショップがセールをしていた「トゲ無しリスボン」です。うちには「リスボン」として数年前に買った苗があり、それは完全にトゲ無しなので何も追加で買うこともないはずですが、あまりの安さに「保険苗」として注文しました。届いた苗を見て笑ってしまいました。赤い輪で囲まれている３枚のシルバーの葉っぱ以外、「葉っぱ無しリスボン」でした。しかも５月末なのに素掘り苗。諺の「安かろう、悪かろう」が頭をよぎりましたが、意地でも再生させてやる、と頑張ってここまできました。

A new thornless Lisbon lemon that I bought recently.  I already have another, which I got several years ago, but lemons are such useful fruits and I cannot have enough.

こちらは去年の秋にスーパーで買ったキーライムの種から育てたもの。数鉢ありますが、この苗が最も樹高があり40cmくらいになっています。しっかりした枝が採取できるくらいになったら、地植えのベルガモットなどに高接ぎして収穫を急ぐ予定です。

This is one of the seedlings from the Key lime fruits that I consumed in autumn last year.  When the plant grows large enough to produce viable scions, I am going to graft them onto the Bergamot plant so as to quicken the time for fruiting.

バタフライピーの花 Butterfly pea flowers

バタフライピーの花がチョロチョロと咲き続けています。見つけ次第、摘み取って冷凍保存。お茶やスイーツの色付けに使います。

フードカラーの原料は何？と、あるとき疑問に思って、日本で普及している食紅の原料をググって調べてみたら、ショック。赤色はカイガラムシ（コチニールカイガラムシ）が原料だそうです。そういえば、衰弱した柑橘類の葉っぱなどに付いたワタカイガラムシを手で潰すと、オレンジ色の液体が出ます。その記事を読んだあと、スーパーへ行って当該食紅の箱の説明を読んでみたら、業務用に使ってはいけないけど家庭用にはOK、みたいなことが書かれていました。それって、家庭用ならたまーにしか使わないだろう、よって人体への影響は限定的、という考えなのでしょうか。

私は果物や紫芋、抹茶などを利用するのですが、青色の原料が無かったので、ポリフェノールを含むというバタフライピーは是非育ててみたかった植物です。

The butterfly pea plants are growing well.  One thing I learned by watching the plants is that flower buds grow at the top end of the vine.  So, my efforts to grow side branches were futile.

実際に育ててみて分かったことは、花はツルの先端に着くということです。ジャスミンのように脇枝を作るほどたくさん花を収穫できることを期待していたのですが。

うちのジャスミンは八重花。何とも言えない良い香りです。夏の間に収穫したものを冷凍保存しておいて、惨めなほど寒い冬に紅茶に入れて、暑かった夏を懐かしみながら楽しみます。ティーポットに一輪入れるだけで、ストレートで飲む安物の紅茶が非常に美味しくなります。

I store jasmine flowers in the freezer every summer, so as to enjoy them with my black tea during the miserable cold winter months, thinking of warmer days.  This summer, I am also freezing the butterfly pea flowers.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 今朝は秋めいて散歩には快適な天気でした。散歩の主導権を握るタイガに引かれて住宅街をあちこち歩いているうちに、小学校の横でタイガが猫が潜って通り過ぎたばかりのスポットを嗅ぎ始めました。

先日は夜散歩で狂暴な野良猫に襲われて怖い思いをしたのに、相変わらず猫に執着です。その野良猫は、私たちがただ通り過ぎただけなのに、唸りながら突然後ろからタイガのオシリを両前脚でボコボコ叩き始めたのです。びっくりした私が蟹歩きで間に割って入ろうとしたら、今度は一瞬のうちにタイガの頭のところへ回ってまた両脚をかけ始めました。翌日、犬友にそのことを話したら、同一の猫と思われる個体が、2頭連れのボーダーを襲ったことがあると聞きました。私が見たのは、開三中学と正久保通りの間の小道で（嫌にローカルネタ）、夜目にも黄色い大きなオス猫でした。場所も「人相」も一致しました。

そんなことは無かったように、猫が通った後をクンクン。

It was an autumn-like morning with cooler and dryer air.  Taiga fully enjoyed the walk and she was quite eager to trace cat's scent anywhere she could, even after a recent horrific encounter with a stray cat.  It attacked her from behind when we were walking at night.  The cat is said to have attacked a woman with 2 Border Collies so, for him, Taiga was an easy prey.

帰りに、去年まで畑だった草地に寄りました。都立城北公園は最近草刈りをしてないのでどの草地も数十センチの草丈で、人も犬も入り込めないくらいです。ここは区の管轄なのか、先日、草刈りしていました。

On our way home, we stopped at the new field which used to be a vegetable farm until last year, when the old owner passed away.  It is now used as a park.

今はフキが盛り返しています。

写真奥の草ボウボウの部分は手つかずで、マツヨイグサが２ｍ以上に育っています。

道を挟んで向かいの屋敷林、切り株に腰掛けてタイガのオヤツタイム。すぐ近くに、実生のキウイが最近生えてきました。

どこまで育つか見ものです。

パッションフルーツのベークトチーズケーキ Passion Fruit Baked Cheesecake

 栽培している果樹のなかで、今年はパッションフルーツが大奮闘してくれました。10号菊鉢で棚に絡ませていますが、ミニトマトのように際限なく枝葉を伸ばし続けるので、その分、実の数も多くなります。最近は毎日のように自然落下するので、台所で追熟済みの果実がふんだんに貯まりました。そこで、スイーツに利用。レアチーズケーキではなく焼き菓子にしました。

The passion fruit plant is growing in a 30-cm diameter pot, on my balcony.  The fruits have started to drop off recently.  They taste delicious at the time of falling off, but by allowing them to mature off the vine, they taste even better.  Since I have plenty of them now, I made a baked cheesecake with them.

マシュマロクリームのチェリータルト Cherry Tart with Marshmallow Cream

 今年は輸入もののアメリカンチェリーが国産チェリー並みに高かったので買いませんでした。でも缶詰ものなら通年使えます。そこで、米国から輸入されて最も普及しているブランドの缶詰を使ってタルトを作りました。マシュマロはそのままでは絶対に食べない食材ですが、クリームに加工すると絶品です。

Due to the events in the Eastern Europe, imported American cherries were very expensive this year and I never bought them.  However, with canned cherries, I can use them all year round.  

パッションフルーツ Passion Fruits

 パッションフルーツが熟し始めています。酷暑の季節には早朝以外、果皮がシワシワだったのが、今は腰水がたっぷり維持されていればあまりシワが出なくなりました。季節の変化を感じます。

The passion fruits are starting to ripen.  The outer skin used to be wrinkled all over while the weather was extremely hot, but now that it is slightly cooler with more frequent rains, the fruits are looking as they should.

これ↓は自然落下したもの。パッションフルーツのツルは2階寝室の外に棚を設置してあるので、寝室真下のリビングにいると、実が落下したとき大きな音が聞こえてきます。

These fruits dropped off the vine naturally as they ripened.  Since I spend most of the day in the living room which is beneath the passion fruit scaffolding, I can hear when the fruit drops on the balcony floor.

パッションフルーツは果皮がシワシワになるまで追熟させると美味しいと言われていますが、個人的にはどんな段階で食べても同じように美味しく感じられます。極端な話、この時期ならツルにぶら下がっている色の薄いのをもぎ取って食べても、完熟のように美味しいです。

サイズは直径6cmで、スーパーで売られている同じエドゥリス種の商品に劣らないと思っています。

This is the commonest variety in Japan and, at 6cm diameter, these fruiuts are as good as those sold in the shop.

カノコユリの最後の花。真夏の花が少ない時期に咲くので有難いです。

The last of my lilies this year, Kanoko lily.  During the peak of the summer, we do not get many flowers, so this lily variety is quite previous.

公園で At the park

 今朝は今までよりは少しだけ過ごしやすい天気で、タイガは公園で風に当たりながら満足そうでした。オヤツの後もニコニコ。

The air was more tolerable this morning, after the rain during the previous night.  Taiga seemed to enjoy the cooler air.

夜の間の雨で草が冷たくて気持ち良いらしく、草風呂の開始。

She started rolling on the cool grass.

急にクルッと起き上がったかと思うと、

リードを咥えて暴れ始めました。

The cool grass bath seemed to energise her - she picked up the leash and started shaking it violently.

おさまったあと帰宅しようとしたら、動くのを拒否。

After she settled down, she was rooted to the ground refusing to budge to go home.
