シャンプー後 After Shampoo

 今年の夏、タイガはまるで換毛期がずっと継続しているかのように毛が抜けています。もうシャンプーしたほうが手っ取り早い、と思って午後にタイガを洗いました。今日も猛暑で熱風が吹くなか、公園へ向かいました。

This summer, Taiga's moulting never ended, and she continues to shed heavily.  I thought it was quicker to shampoo her than to brush, and so I washed her in the afternoon.  It was another 36℃-day today, with hot winds blowing when we headed for the park.

歩いているうちにだんだんと乾いてきて、抜け毛が表面に浮き上がってきます。この↓白っぽくてボサボサしているのが、ちょっと触ればゴソっと抜けてくるルースヘアです。

As we were walking, her coat became drier, and the loose hair started to rise to the surface.  The pale, unsmooth hair is itching to come off from her sides.

 

お尻もどっさり抜け毛が出やすい部位です。見るたびに引っ張りたくてウズウズしますが、草地に着けばブラシを掛けて抜け毛は袋に収納・持ち帰りするので、それまでのガマン。

Likewise on her bottom - lots of loose hair from her pale undercoat.  It was so tempting to pull it out, but I had to wait until we got to the nearest field, so that I could brush her and bag the loose hair to take home in order not to litter the street or the park.

途中、コンビニでアイスクリームを買ったので、タイガはウキウキで公園を目指します。

On our way, I stopped at a convenience store to get a soft ice.  Taiga was very happy and quickened her steps.

溶けないうちに一刻も早く食べようと、城北公園手前の草地でベンチに座りました。今日のはジャージー牛乳ソフト。なぜかキャラメル風味でウソっぽいですが、美味しい。

At the nearest field before the Johoku Central Park, we sat at a bench and table so that we could start eating the ice cream before it melted.  I got a Jersey milk soft ice.  It is artificially caramel flavoured but tastes delicious.

アイスを分けてもらえるのを静かにジッと待っていて、本当にシアワセそうな顔で食べるので、最後の台の部分は全部あげました。

She waits for her serving patiently and quietly and she eats with such a happy face that I gave her the whole of the bottom part to finish.

アイスの後は橋を渡って城北中央公園へ移動。時計はちょうど４時を指しています。

After eating the ice cream, we crossed the bridge and moved to the Johoku Central Park.  At the entrance, the clock pointed to 4 p.m.

猛暑の午後だし夕方散歩には早すぎる時間なので、人影はまばら。

Due to the hot weather and it being too early for evening walk, there were few people in sight.

公園上のほうへ上がりましたが、今日はどこへ行っても暑い風しか吹いていませんでした。

We went up to the upper part of the park.  Wherever we went, we could not escape from hot winds.

リンゴの袋外し Removing apple bags

 ここ数日の雨のあと、またしてもリンゴの葉っぱがハダニだらけになっていました。今日のハダニは私の目で見てもはっきり分かる黒っぽいものだったので、7月以降の目に見えないほど極小のもととは異なる種類だったかも。今回もベーキングソーダ系の溶液を作ってスプレーしました。30分以上たってからシャワー水で溶液を洗い落とすと、後にはオレンジ色の液体が袋についていました。私が作る溶液はベーキングソーダ、展着剤としてコーンスターチ、および水だけで作っているので、色は若干白く曇るけどオレンジ色とは無縁。といことは、ハダニの死骸からのものだと思います。

シャワー水ですっきりした後は、リンゴの袋を全部外しました。いとも簡単に袋が取れてきたので、あっけないくらいでした。写真の青色矢印の鉢植えはグラニースミスとその頂点に高接ぎしてある紅玉、赤色矢印は紅の夢。

After the recent rain which lasted several days, the apple leaves were infested with spider mites again.  Notably, I could actually see the spider mites today, so they must have been a different sort from the spider mites that kept coming back since the start of July.  I made another container of spray solution with baking soda.  After more than 30 minutes, I washed the leaves with the shower hose.  I noticed that there were drops of orange liquid on the apple bags, which I had never seen before.  The solution I make consists of baking soda, corn starch (to make it stick), and water.  The colour of the solution is almost transparent with just a hint of white.  So, I presume that the orange colour came from the dead spider mites.

After giving a thorough wash to the apple trees, I decided to remove all the bags.  It was amazingly easy to do.  In the photo below, the pot indicated with the blue arrow contains Granny Smith, and Kogyoku grafted at the top of Granny Smith.  The pot with the red arrow contains Kurenai-no-Yume, a ref-flesh apple variety.

袋の効果は抜群でした。実が一個も落ちることなく清潔に保たれていました。これからは直射日光に当たり、紅玉および紅の夢が色づくことを期待しています。

The bags were very effective in preventing bugs getting in, and the fruits were kept clean and free of sunburn.  From now on, I hope that the skins of Kogyoku and Kurenai-no-Yume will turn red in the full sun.

これは紅玉の枝。実の数は５個にまで減らしてあります。

This is a branch of Kogyoku.  I reduced the number of young fruits to 5 ultimately.

紅玉は開花が一番最後の品種でした。なかなか実が肥大しなかったのに、袋掛けした状態の間に大きくなったようで、現在はグラニースミスとほぼ同じ大きさ。

Kogyoku bloomed last.  Its young fruits struggled to grow in the early stage.  However, they must have grown fast while they were covered with bags, and now, they are about the same size as Granny Smith.

こちらは紅の夢。実の形が今のところ若干の扁平なので区別しやすい。

This is Kurenai-no-Yume.  The shape of the fruits looks like flat peaches, and it is easy to distinguish this cultivar from the other two.

全体的にグラニースミスよりも大きな実になっています。

On the whole, the fruits of Kurenai-no-Yume are larger than those of Granny Smith at the moment.

初収穫でどこまで果肉が赤くなるのか興味津々です。

I am curious to see how red the flesh will become in the first harvest.

夕方散歩など Evening Walk etc

 タイガのオヤツの補充をしました。鳥むね肉を一晩凍らせて、冷凍庫から出したら未だ硬いうちにナイフで薄くスライスして天日干しにします。ナイフは必ず事前に砥石で十分研ぎ澄まして使うと、この暑い気温のなか、凍った肉の表面がちょうどナイフで薄く削れます。今朝の11時頃から干し始めて、午後２時にはもうカリカリに乾燥していました。食品乾燥機でやるよりずっと速いです。

I needed to replenish Taiga's chicken jerky.  The way I make it is as follows: freeze the chicken breast overnight, take it out of the freezer, and start shaving while it is still frozen.  Due to the extreme heat, it is not impossible to shave the surface of the frozen meat, as long as the knife was sharpened on the sharpening stone before use.  After getting enough slices, I hung them outside at 11 a.m. this morning, and by 2 p.m., they were already absolutely dry.  Drying in the sun is much faster than using a food dryer.

上２段が鶏むね肉、一番下のはスライスした切り餅です。前回おかきを作ったときは、揚げているうちに中身がプーと膨らんで出てきたので、今回は乾燥させてから揚げることにしました。

The upper two layers are chicken slices, while the bottom layer contains sliced mochi.  When I deep-fried rice snacks several days ago, the inside of mochi slices came out.  This time, I dried them before frying.

吊るした場所は、２階の南向きバルコニーの物干し竿です。今日は熱風が吹いていたので天然の乾燥機のようでした。

For this job, the washing line on the upstairs balcony becomes handy.  During the day, we had hot winds blowing, and it was like being inside a natural dryer.

On the left are finished chicken jerky, and, on the right, are the dried mochi slices.

ジャーキーは薄くて半透明。鶏肉には元々塩分が含まれているらしく、乾燥させるとそれが凝縮されるので、ほんのり塩味があって自分で食べてみても美味しいです。

The chicken jerky is flimsy enough to be able to see my fingers through them.  Chicken flesh seems to contain salt inside, and when dried, the salt gets concentrated, with the result that the chicken jerky tastes slightly salty and tasty.

おかきのほうは、左が前回同様、青さのり。右はケイジャンスパイスの風味にしました。一旦食べ始めると止められなくなる美味しさです。切り餅４枚でこんなに沢山作れるとは、袋入りのを買う気がしなくなります。

The rice snacks on the left are flavoured with green seaweeds, while the slices on the right are flavoured with Cajun spices.  Once I start eating these snacks, I cannot stop - they are so tasty.  To think that only 4 pieces of mochi were needed to make these, I can never go back to the expensive store-bought ones.

夕方散歩で今日のタイガは城北公園を目指しました。公園入口に着くと、ちょうどシュナウザーのジョン君が散歩を終えて帰るところでした。だんだん日が短くなると、皆さん散歩の時間も徐々に早まります。

Today, Taiga chose to go to the Johoku Park for our evening walk.  When we arrived, we sae John, a male Schnauzer, just leaving having finished his walk.  As the days are getting shorter, some people are starting to have walks earlier.

タイガと私は川沿いの道を歩いて、テニスコート横の草地へ向かいます。

Taiga and I went down the road along the river, to go to the field next to the tennis courts.

草地に着くと、ここ数日の雨のあとなので、草丈がすっかり伸びていました。

When we arrived at the field, we found that the grass had grown tall due to the rain over the last several days.

でも、川風が来るのでこの草地は夕涼みには最適です。

However, thanks to the breeze coming from the river, this is our favourite field for getting cool in the evening.

タイガは草の上で座り込みましたが、私は雨後の湿気を警戒して立ったままです。

Taiga sat on the grass, but I remained standing not wanting to get the moisture following the recent rain.

そこへ柴ミックスのツヨシが到着。

There came Tsuyoshi, a Shiba Inu mix.

今日のツヨシはゴキゲンな表情です。

私に近寄ってきたのは挨拶のためよりも、

He came closer to me, but his real motive was, instead of greeting me, 

手提げの中のオヤツ目当てのようです。今日の午後に出来たばかりのチキンジャーキーが臭っていたのでしょうか。

to get at what was inside my bag - probably he was drawn to the freshly made chicken jerky.

写真では分かりにくいですが、ツヨシの肩幅は異常に広いです。その肩から前脚がストンと生えているので、立った姿をみると竹馬のような脚です。元は野犬の群れから保護されたそうですが、柴以外にもどんなDNAが入っているのか、ミックス犬の謎めいた側面です。

It is not easy to see in the photo, but Tsuyoshi's shoulders are very broad.  His front legs are set apart, stretching out in a parallel way from the shoulders, and when he stands on his fours, his legs look like stilts.  He grew up in a pack of wild dogs, and I wonder what other DNAs he might have apart from Shiba Inu's - that is the intriguing aspect of a mixed breed dog.

カレンダー写真に使いたくなるほどのスマイルを見せてくれました。

ツヨシと一緒に歩き出したら、白柴のおもちちゃんと遭遇。

When we were walking with Tsuyoshi, we met Omochi, a female White Shiba Inu.

おもちちゃんとの挨拶はいつも穏やかです。

Her greeting with other dogs is always very quiet.

おもちちゃんも加わって一緒に歩いていたら、カンタがやってきました。夕暮れなのでライトをつけています。

Omochi joined us in walking, when we saw Kanta.  He is already wearing the colourful light for the evening.

今度はカンタの番。

Now it's Kanta's turn.

カンタはタイガより４歳下で、９月の誕生日で８歳になるはずですが、年々、偏屈になってきた印象です。私が呼びつけると尻尾を振って近づいてきますが、他のワンコに愛嬌を振りまいて場の雰囲気に貢献するということはしません。今日は理由もなく何度も唸っていました。

Kanta is 4 years younger than Taiga and should become 8 years old in coming September.  Every year, he seems to become grumpy.  If I call him, he will come to me with his tail wagging.  However, he makes no effort to be pleasant to other dogs for the best of the group's harmony.  This evening, he kept growling for no reasons.
