食用菊 Edible Chrysanthemum

もう蚊がいない季節で天候も良いので、私がスーパーを回って買い物しているあいだ、タイガは玄関前に座って留守番をしています。 帰宅してからご褒美にタイガの大好きな乳酸菌飲料をあげました。

Mosquitoes are gone, and the weather is fine, so Taiga sits outside the porch while I am away doing shopping.  As a reward, she gets her favourite probiotic drink when I return home.

洋犬ならもっと表情豊かに喜ぶのでしょうが、大好物を目の前にしてもマイルドな反応。一頭飼いなので競争心の必要がないのも原因。これが、他所の子と一緒におやつを与えようとすると、長年の躾けなんて頭から吹っ飛んで、私の手まで食べてしまいそうな勢いです。

A Western breed dog might show more joy at a time like this, but Taiga remains calm.  Being the only dog in the house, she does not have competition.  However, if I bring out a treat when other dogs are around, years of training goes out of the window, and she nearly eats my hand as well.

今年の春にメルカリで買った黄花食用菊の２鉢目が咲き始めました。

The second pot of the edible chrysanthemum plants that I bought in spring this year has started to bloom.

中輪咲きでしっかりした花びらです。

They are medium-sized flowers with firm petals.

先に咲いた鉢の花は順次利用してきましたが、もう最後です。その横に写り込んでいる苗はクッキングアップルで、スモモの彩の姫があった場所にこの２本を植え付ける予定です。彩の姫は大粒のものは普通に美味しいけれど、小粒の実はまるで別品種であるかのように食味が劣っていました。

The flowers of the first pot have nearly finished.  The apple trees standing next to the chrysanthemum pot are cooking apples.  This spot was occupied until this autumn by a plum tree called 'Sai-no Hime'.  The quality of the plums varied widely between larger fruits and small ones, as if they were of different varieties.

手前はグラニースミス、向こうは「紅の夢」。今年の１月にグラニースミスの頂点に接いだ授粉用の紅玉はグングン育って、来年の蕾が入った複合芽がいくつかできています。この秋から来年の今頃まで、生ゴミなどを漉き込んで土を再生させてから植え付けます。樹形は引き続きスピンドル型にするので、省スペースで間に合います。

Granny Smith on the right, and 'Kurenai-no Yume' on the left.  Kurenai-no Yume is a red-flesh variety.  I keep them in pots since I want to till the soil with kitchen garbage and fertiliser until autumn next year.  The trees will be kept in the spindle-shape, which will save space.

今年最後の食用菊の利用。大き目の花は厚物の苗から、他は中輪咲きの苗から。

Last batch of chrysanthemum flowers for this year.

色のアクセントをつけるために赤紫色の「もってのほか」も少しだけ加えました。

I picked a few pink flowers in order to add another colour.

甘酢であえて完成。湯がくと縮むので、あのザル一杯の菊で作った量の半分がこれです。

After blanching, the petals were seasoned with sweet and sour dressing (similar to the one I make for sushi rice).  This is from half of the flowers in the above picture.

散歩 Walks

 朝の散歩中に近所の紀州犬のウメちゃんに会えました。久しぶりなので2頭とも嬉しそうですが、和犬の控えめな挨拶です。

During our morning walk, we met Ume, our neighbour's Kishuken girl.  Since we do not meet often, the two seemed quite happy.

カメラとの位置関係でタイガのほうが大きく写ることがありますが、ウメちゃんのほうが二回りほど大きいです。タイガの体格は父方の遺伝で大柄ですが、ウメちゃんも紀州犬の女の子としては大きいです。

Due to the camera angle, Taiga may look larger than Ume sometimes, but Ume is much larger.  Taiga herself is larger than average female Kaiken, which comes from her father's side.  However, Ume also is large for a female Kishu.

こうやって見ると、白い犬って尊い雰囲気があります。

A white dog like Ume looks graceful.

真っ直ぐ前を向いた耳に、目は紀州犬独特の目で美しい。

With her ears facing straight forward, and her typical Kishu eyes, she is a good specimen.

近所の垣根のサザンカの花が綺麗でした。

It is already the season for sasanqua flowers.

せっかくの晴天と紅葉の季節なので、午後の２時過ぎに城北中央公園へ行きました。他の季節なら、午後1-2時頃はタイガのオシッコ散歩で近所を歩いて直ぐに帰ってくるのですが、今の追加の長い散歩はタイガとの思い出作りもかねています。

Taking advantage of the good weather and the autumn leaves season, we went to the park again in early afternoon.  Normally, the walk between 1-2 p.m. is just a very quick one for Taiga to relieve herself in the neighbourhood.  Having an extra, long walk during this season is for creating good memory about our life together.

タイガが数年後に虹の橋を渡るとき、この公園の記憶をいっぱいカバンに詰めて旅立つでしょう。

When Taiga crosses the 'Rainbow Bridge' in several years' time, I hope her travelling bag will be full of the happy times we had in this park.

今日は公園上のほうへは登らずに、川沿いを歩いて向こう側の出口を目指しました。

Instead of going up to the higher ground, we walked along the river to go to the woodland on other side of the park.

珍しくカラスが草地に集まっていました。何かの木の実を割って食べているような音を立てていました。

In the field on our way, we saw many crows gathered on the ground.  Judging from the cracking sounds they made, they seemed to be feasting on some sort of nuts.

道を渡って向こうの林に向かいます。

We headed towards the woodland across the road.

林を歩いていたら、久しぶりに豆柴のリカちゃんとばったり。この子の家も近所ですが、散歩の時間帯が異なるのでめったに会えません。

As we were walking in the woods, we ran into Rika, a female miniature Shiba Inu.  She also lives near our house, but her owner takes her out at different hours of the day.

タイガにはあまり興味はなさそうですが、私にはとても愛想が良いです。

She showed little interest in Taiga but was keen to come close to me.

もう２歳半とは思えない反則的な可愛さ。

She is so cute that she does not look like a 2 1/2 years old grownup.

公園で At the Park

 ダイエット効果でくびれが出たタイガのおなかを写真で残すためにポーズをとらせました。今年の５月に胸の脂肪腫を摘出したのに加え、正月以来ゆっくりと減量したのとで、生活態度が快活になった印象です。手術して本当に良かったと思っています。

I took a picture of Taiga, showing the effect of her diet which started in January this year.  After removing the lipoma from her chest in May, together with the benefit of slimming, she seems to have become much more active and alive.  Although I was worried about the general anaesthetic operation, I am now very pleased with the way it has turned out.

城北中央公園上のほうの陽だまり広場に移動して原っぱでくつろぎました。

We moved to the field at the higher ground of the Johoku Central Park, sat down and relaxed.

数日前にシャンプーしたのに地面でスリゴロ。なんとか年末のシャンプーまであまり汚れてほしくない。

I only recently shampooed Taiga, but she does not care.  I do hope she will stay relatively clean until this year's final shampoo at the end of this month.

近くにころがっていた棒切れを手繰り寄せてガシガシ始めました。

She pulled a piece of wood that was lying near her and started gnawing at it.

ノムラモミジが紅葉しています。春に芽吹いて真っ赤になったあと、夏から秋口までは陰鬱な赤黒い色で、晩秋になるとまた鮮やかな赤になります。こんなに綺麗なのに、この中央公園で唯一のモミジの木だと思います。

The Nomura maple tree is in its full autumn colour.  The leaves are bright red when they come out in spring, but turn into a dull, dark colour during summer and early autumn.  However, as soon as the weather turns cold, they go back to the spring colour.  Such a beautiful tree, and yet, this is the only maple tree in this vast park.

公園は練馬区と板橋区をまたいで広がっていますが、ここは板橋区側の入口のひとつ。毎年ここのイチョウ並木が綺麗です。

The park straddles over our Nerima-ku and Itabashi-ku, and this is one of the entrances on the Itabashi-ku side, with an avenue of ginkgo trees.

今年 小さな苗で買ったノコンギクに似た花がまだ咲き続けています。まるで造花のように衰える様子がありません。今までは「ノコンギクもどき」と心の中で思ってあまり重要視していませんでしたが、ここまで頑張っているのを見ると大切に育てていこうという気になりました。花そのものはノコンギクの桃山にそっくりだし、遥かに丈夫なので文句なしです。

The aster that I bought earlier this year as a tiny plant is still blooming.  They have been in full bloom for so long that they look like plastic flowers.  Seeing the plant doing its best and doing so well, I am getting to like it more.  The flowers look very similar to the Japanese wild aster variety called 'Momoyama', but the plant is far stronger than Momoyama.  So, I no longer look down on it as a 'Momoyama look-alike'.

ピンク系の食用菊は今年は振るわなかったけど、冬至芽が出始めているので来年は場所替えして是非 増やしたいです。

The pink edible chrysanthemum barely survived the extreme summer this year.  Luckily, several new shoots for next year are coming out already.  I will replant them in a spot with less exposure to the sun next year.

おなじ「もってのほか」という名前でも、花の色に大きなバラツキがあって、私はこの濃いピンクのが好みです。湯がいて酢に当てると更に色が濃くなります。また、花を摘まないで枯れ始めるまで育てていると、気温が急低下する頃には赤紫色にまで濃くなります。

Although under the same variety name, there are several shades of pink for this chrysanthemum.  My favourite is this deep pink type.  When I blanch the flower petals and add vinegar, the colour turns darker pink.  Also, if I leave the flowers growing as they are until the temperature drops low, the petals turn almost purple.
