皇帝ナツメなど Jujube fruits etc

 ９月下旬になって皇帝ナツメがほんのり色づき始めています。

As we approach the end of September, the young fruits of the 'Emperor jujube' tree is getting slightly yellow.

実の１個１個に日光が当たるように、今朝、枝を括り付けました。

I rearranged the small branches this morning, so that each of the fruits would get more exposure to the direct sunlight. 

日本種の実よりもずっと大きくて、食べ応えありそうです。「皇帝棗」のラベルの写真よりもはるかに丸っこい形状の実で、海外で梨棗 (Li Zao) と呼ばれている品種に酷似しています。「皇帝棗」、「ジャンボナツメ」、「中国大実棗」などは、日本の業者が勝手につけた名前だと思います。特に「中国大実」に関しては、あまりにもいい加減すぎ。

The fruits are much larger than those of the common Japanese variety.  Also, they look a lot rounder than the fruits in the photo of the label.  The name 'Emperor jujube' does not appear anywhere outside of Japan and I suspect that this is not an official/correct name, but that created by distributors in Japan.

南向きバルコニーで、うちでは最も陽当たりが良い場所。これから一日の寒暖の差が大きくなってくると甘味が増すと思います。

The plant is placed on the upstairs balcony where it gets full sun.  As the day's max. and min. temperatures widen going forward, the sugar content should increase.

こちらは８月に届いた日本種。散歩しているうちに、これと全く同じ実がなっているナツメの成木を見つけました。食品倉庫のような事業所の敷地わき、トラックが頻繁に出入りしているので近づきにくいですが、道から見る限り同じものだと思います。「日本種」と言っても、実にはバラつきがあるようです。棗が日本に入ってきたのは奈良時代よりも前と言われているので、何世紀ものあいだ人が改良を加えなくても、ある程度の枝変わりが発生してもおかしくないと思います。よって、この苗の実は数年前に地元JAで買った日本種の実とは全く違うタイプだし、狂暴なトゲで覆われていたあの苗とは異なり、これはトゲ無しです。

This is the common Japanese jujube that arrived in August - these fruits are from the flowers of August and still very small.  To my delight, during a dog walk, I happened to notice a mature jujube tree with identical fruits, growing in a corner of a business establishment.  The place is a kind of warehouse for foodstuff and trucks come and go all the time, so I can only observe the tree from the street.  When the fruits become brown, I am going to ask for a permission to pick a few fruits.

ぷちまる金柑がまた開花しています。家の中にいても甘い匂いが漂ってきます。今年は裏年の予定なので、実のなり方には全く期待していません。

The seedless kumquat is flowering yet again, and I can smell the flowers from my living room.  Last year was the bumper year, so I am not expecting much from this plant this year.

こちらは金柑ライム。ほんの少し蕾が出ています。

The limequat is ready to be harvested but it also has a few flower buds.

もう実は十分大きくなり弾力性も出ているので、今年は今有る実で終わりのはず。

Since the fruit picking season has started, I am not expecting fruits from the new flower buds.

こちらは地植えリスボンレモンに、７月中旬に高接ぎして８月に開花していたらしい金柑ライム。落果する様子がないので、このまま行けば来年の２月頃に使えそうです。

The limequat scion that I grafted on the Lisbon lemon is growing well.  I did the grafting in mid-July this year and flowers must have followed in August.

うちのヒガンバナが顔を出していました。花茎がいったん土から出始めると、一日で数十センチ伸びるので、昨日はまだ気づきませんでした。

The spider lilies in my garden have started to come out.  Once the flower stems come out of the ground, they can reach 40-50cm in a day, so I did not notice them yesterday.

タイガが気づいてもらおうと近づいてきます。YouTubeでよく見る洋犬とは違い、タイガは要求のそぶりは見せず、いつもひっそりと圧をかけてきます。

Taiga walking towards me.  Unlike the super affectionate Western dogs that you see on the YouTube, Taiga makes no demands even when she wants to go for a walk.  Instead, she silently 'indicates' to me that she wants me to notice her needs.

公園で At the park

 気候が徐々に秋らしくなってきて、公園では萩の花が咲いていました。

Autumn is arriving slowly but surely.  The 'Japanese clover' (or, 'bush clover') has started to flower.  This plant has very modest looking blossoms but they are loved in this country and they appear in silk screen paintings of more than a thousand years ago.

その隣に植わっている一重咲きの酔芙蓉。夏にも少し咲くけど、これからが本格的な開花時期で、11月頃まで楽しめます。

Next to the Japanese clover bush is Hibiscus mutabilis (or, 'confederate rose') tree that is starting to flower.  Its flowering season lasts up to mid-November, so this is a useful tree to have in a park.  Both this and the Japanese clover will be cut down to the ground in winter, and they start growing vigorously in early summer the following year.

中央公園のいつもの入口広場。タイガは冷たい草風呂を楽しんだあと。帰ろうとしたら、こうやって座り込んで動かない。いつもは目立たないけどタイガにはまつ毛がしっかり生えていて、この写真では右目の上で目立っています（ウラヤマシイ）。

Taiga has enjoyed her usual 'bath' rolling on the cool grass.  When I wanted to go home, she planted herself on the ground and would not budge.  In the photo, I can see her heavy eyelash over her right eye - wish I had eyelashes like hers.

写真を撮り始めたら腹ばいになって、当分居座るつもりのようです。

As I pointed the camera at her, she crouched down, fully intending to stay there longer.

ばあちゃん犬になってもカワイイ。

She may be old at 11 years old, but she is just as endearing as she was as a puppy.

撫でるのを止めようとすると、こうやって私に指示。

Every time I tried to finish, she indicated to me that it was not enough.

帰宅途中、石神井川に沿った歩行者専門道路の脇にヒガンバナが咲いていました。

On our way home, I noticed the red spider lily along the river.  Its Japanese name, Higanbana means the 'autumnal equinox flower' and it is always very punctual.

そういえば、うちのはまだ見ていない。

However, I could not remember seeing this flower in my garden this year yet.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

タイガは今朝は住宅街の散歩を選びました。私の好きな６丁目を散策。昨夜の小雨と風で落ち葉などが飛んできていたのか、家の前を掃除している年輩の男性とあいさつ。

Taiga wanted to walk through the neighbourhood this morning.  We headed towards the 6-chome district (we live in 3-chome).  We had a light rain and wind during the night, and an old gentleman was clearing the street in front of his house (we clean the street ourselves, instead of relying on the local government).

６丁目のこの通りはいつも静かで、歩いているとのんびり気分になります。

I love walking this part of 6-chome - it has a nostalgic atmosphere and very relaxing.

角を曲がって大通りを歩いていると、家の前にバラの挿し木苗がズラズラっと並べられている光景に出くわしました。よほどバラの愛好家なのでしょう。シーズンではないので花が見られないのが残念です。

As we turned into to a wider and livelier street, I saw a house with countless pots of rose cuttings.  Since it is not the flowering season, I could not tell whether they were pretty or not, but the owner of the house must be very fond of roses.

その数軒先の金魚の水槽。前回来たときよりも数が減っていて、より自由に動きまわっていました。

Several meters ahead, we came to the house with goldfish tanks.  The number of fish seems to have gone down and, thanks to that, the fish were swimming more freely.

ずっと眺めていると吸い込まれそうです。

I could go on watching the smooth, mesmerising movements of the fish for hours.

空が怪しいので家の方角へ歩きます。

However, the sky was threatening, so we started to head home.

私が住んでいる３丁目にある家。玄関先に鉢植えリンゴが２株ありますが、前回通ったときは１本が枯れそうな雰囲気で気がかりでした。今朝通ると、やはり枯れていた。

We came to a house in my 3-chome, where they had 2 pots of apple trees.  Last time I passed, I was worried that one of the trees was looking sorry in the summer heat.  This morning, my worry was confirmed.  It was completely dry.

もったいない。なぜなら、品種は知らないけどいずれも矮性台に接いであるリンゴだからです。手前のまだ生きている苗でいうと、写真の赤い丸で囲んだコブの間の部分が矮台で、その下の地面に入っている部分が普通の台木、さらに矮台よりも上の部分が本来の目的の品種ものリンゴ苗です。奥の枯れた苗も同じ構造なので、栽培者が特別な思いで入手したはずです。枯れた原因は東京の猛暑のせいなのか、あるいは鉢が小さすぎて（９号っぽい）根詰まりを起こしているのか分かりません。
What a pity!  Both of these trees are grafted on a dwarf middle stock which, in turn, is grafted on a regular root stock.  In the picture below, the tree trunk between the red circles is the dwarf stock, below which is the normal root stock.  The part above the dwarf stock is the particular variety of apple that the owner wanted to grow.  I cannot tell why the plant in the back has gone dead - whether due to the extreme summer heat or the pot has become too small (looks only 27cm diameter).

品種名を知りたいところですが、いつ通っても家の人を見かけたことがないのでナゾのままです。

I would love to know the variety of this surviving tree, but I have never seen anyone coming out of this house.

実は小粒で、アルプズ乙女程度ですが、わざわざ矮台を使うほどならアルプスや祝いのようなクラブアップル系のはずはなし。この果皮の色からは品種の見当がつきません。

The fruit is small like a crab apple, but I think it is because of the way it is looked after.  To use the dwarf stock, the variety must be something special, like my red-fleshed apple tree which is one of the latest varieties.

たくさん歩いたので、オヤツにしてから帰りました。

Having walked a lot, Taiga deserved a treat before going home.

十五夜など Mid-autumn moon etc

 今朝の散歩時はまだ曇ってたので、公園の草地も蒸し蒸し。

At the time of our morning walk, it was still cloudy and very humid.

天気はどうでもタイガは草風呂を楽しんでいました。伸ばした脚が何かの干物のように見えます。
For Taiga, the weather is of no importance and she thoroughly enjoyed the grass bath.  When she stretches her legs, she looks like a dried wild game.

帰ろう。

Too muggy, so let's go home.

今日は旧暦の十五夜にあたるそうですが、うちには「十五夜」という品種名の食用菊があります。今年の夏にメ〇カリで買った小苗で、出品者さんがおまけ分も入れてくださったので、もう一鉢あります。が、開花時期を合わせることができませんでした。枝数を増やしてこんもりさせるためには夏を通して刈り込まなければなりません。なので株が充実するまでに時間がかかるので、最近やっと蕾が見え始めたばかり。ネット上の情報によると、スーパーで普通にみかけるパック入りの食用菊はこの品種だそうです。

Today is the 15th August according to the old calendar, and it is the mid-autumn festival day when we appreciate the full moon.  One of the edible chrysanthemums I grow is called "Jugoya" which means the mid-autumn full moon night.  Unfortunately, I did not manage to grow the plant ready for flowering for the mid-autumn (I had to keep cutting back the branches in order for to make the plant bushy).  Flower buds have only started to come out now and its flowering season will be the same as other chrysanthemums, i.e., late October.  

花を道行く人たちにも鑑賞してもらうために、門の外に置いてあります。

I am treating this plant as ornamental, and it will stay outside of the fence for passers-by to look at.

タイガは、私がＯＫを出さない限り門から出てきません。ほんとは出たくてウズウズしています。

今日の日中は雲ひとつない青空になって、真夏の暑さでした。自分で月見団子を作るのが手間なので、大福を買ってきました。本当は十五夜の菊の花も添えたいところですが、葉っぱで間に合わせます。

The sky cleared up after morning and we could expect to see a full moon tonight.  I did not have the time to make sweets for the occasion, so I bought a kind of mochi with sweet bean paste inside.  Although I could not use Jugoya flowers as a garnish, I cut a small branch to add a colour.

ということで、満月。湿度が高いのでモヤがかかっています（無料カメラアプリの質のせいも有り）。

For sure, we had a clear sky in the evening and the full mid-autumn moon (Jugoya).  Unfortunately, the air was humid, so the moon looks a little blurred (also due to the quality of my camera app).

うちの2階バルコニーからの眺めなので、近所の建物が写り込んでいます。

Watching the moon from my upstairs balcony, neighbours' roofs are unavoidable.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 昨夜かなりの大雨が降ったあと、今朝の散歩の時間はときたま小雨がパラパラときて、涼しく過ごせました。久しぶりに石神井川の向こう岸の早宮地区を歩いてみました。ここは道路が広いところが多くて、うちの桜台地区よりも清々しい印象です。庭の広い家も多いし、近くにお店が一軒もないので、高級な雰囲気。（うちは、近くに銭湯がまだあるし、農協まであるのとは大違い。）

It rained heavily through the night and the sky was overcast this morning with occasional light rain.  Since the air was cool and pleasant for the first time in months, we crossed the river and walked a district where we had not been during the summer months.  This area is more upscale compared to the district I live in, with broader streets and larger houses with spacious gardens.  (In contrast, where I live, there is a 'sento' [bath house] still surviving and, moreover, we have the JA [farmers' co-op].)

坂を上り詰めたところにある洋風の大きな屋敷。でも、私にとって羨ましいのは家ではなく、

This is the largest house in this area, which stands on top of the hill.  However, what I admire is not the big house,

庭園の横に広い菜園があることです。普通の民家が数件建ちそうな広さで、横を通るたびに自分の植えたい果樹が頭をよぎります。

but the farming space attached to the garden.  Every time I pass by, I think of all the fruit trees I would love to grow.

丘の尾根にあたる道をテクテク歩いたあとは、石神井川に向かって坂を下りて帰ります。

After walking along the highest points of the hill, we came down towards the Shakujii River which separates this area and Sakuradai area where I live.  

坂の下までくると、元農家の畑。週末や祭日には乗用車で乗り付けて農作業をするようで、何度か横を通っているうちに軽く挨拶するようになりました。

At the bottom of the hill, there is a small farmland which is kept for a hobby purpose.  The owner comes to this plot in his passenger car on weekends and public holidays. 

ナツメ他 Jujube etc

 ナツメの実の色が緑から徐々に白っぽくなってきました。先日、試しに１個食べてみたら甘かったので、また１個食べてしまいました。甘さはあっても未だ水分がなくてモサモサした食感です。これから果皮が赤茶色になるまでにどれだけジューシー感が乗るか、楽しみです。

ということで、現在残っているのは10個ですが、これでも初年度としては生らせすぎ。つくづく思うのは、この苗は今年の初めには１年生の棒苗でスタートしたはずなのに、どういう世話をすれば５月末に苗が届いたときの状態にまで育つのか、ということです。とにかくお店に感謝です。

The colour of the jujube fruits is getting paler.  I tried one of them recently, and it was already sweet.  So I had another one which was also sweet.  However, the flesh was still green and there was hardly any moisture in it.  

After that, currently 10 young fruits are left.  Even with 10, I think the burden is too heavy for a new plant which must have started as a one-year grafted tree earlier this year.  I am amazed how the nursery managed to grow the plant to that state when it was delivered to me at the end of May.  I am so grateful to the shop.

鉢植えで管理しているニラの花が満開。普通のニラより遥かに小ぶりで、食感は葉が柔らかく臭いもマイルド、タマネギを切らしているときに使っています。冬でも青々しているので、年に何度も収穫できますが、花を咲かせるのは初めてなので、もしかして種ができたあとは株が枯れるのか、いま観察中です。

The Chinese chive that I keep in a pot.  This variety is much smaller than the common type and the flavour is very delicate.  Like the normal type, I can harvest the leaves several times through the year, including during winter.  However, it is getting flowers for the first time and I am watching if this is going to be the end of it, after producing seeds.

今日も強烈な暑さでした。タイガのオヤツとして作っている鶏むね肉のジャーキーは、朝つるして夕方までにはカラカラに完成していました。お店で売っているオヤツは高いし保存剤も入っていそうなので、暇にまかせて手作りを続けています。

Another excruciatingly hot day today.  I made a new batch of treat for Taiga with chicken breast.  The sun is so strong that, after I hung these in the morning, they were dry and ready for use by the evening.  By making these at home, it is cheap and safe without using any preservatives.
