ドーベルマンの仔犬 Doberman puppy

 ご近所のドイツ系ドーベルマンピンシャーの仔犬が散歩デビューしました。その子の存在は話に聞いていたので、会える日を楽しみにしていました。名前はリアちゃん。成長すると中型犬になる子だそうで、生後４か月の今はまだ小ぶりです。シッポはブリーダーさんが既に断尾してしまっていますが、耳は自然に垂れ耳にする予定で、今取り付けられている白いものは、耳たぶがシワっぽくなっているのでスムーズに矯正するためのものだそうです。

My neighbour's 4-month old, German Doberman puppy on her first walk outside.  Her name is Leah and she has an extremely happy-go-lucky temperament and is afraid of nothing.  She has white plastic pieces attached to her ears.  These are not for pinching but for smoothing out the creases.

Meeting other dogs for the first time.

タイガとの対峙。全然怖がりません。タイガが子犬の頃そうだったように、天真爛漫な性格で物怖じしないので育て易そうです。

She shows no fear of Taiga, just as Taiga was with large dogs when she first started walking outside.

小柄なシェルティーのアキちゃんにはなおさら。アゴをアキちゃんの背中に乗せて余裕です。アキちゃんはおとなしい子なので、叱りません。

Leah places her head on the back of a timid, female Shelty, as if to say "I am stronger than you".

柿の木広場へ行きました。小さな子連れの人が多かったので、早々に退出。

We went to the Persimmon Park but there were too many small children today, so we left soon.

帰り道、道端の他所のワンコが残していった臭いとりに夢中です。

On our way home, Leah is absorbed in sniffing out traces of other dogs.

すっかりタイガに慣れてくると、ちょっかいを出しながら歩きます。

でも、度が過ぎると、

タイガに叱られます。こうやって犬同士の教えのほうが、人間が教えるよりずっと効果があります。

叱られたあとしばらくは模範生のように並んで歩きますが、

"Behave yourself!"

本当はかまって欲しくてウズウズしています。

We ran into Bum, a timid female, Shiba-mix rescue.

バムちゃんはとても内気でおとなしい子なので、積極的なリアちゃんにも優しい。

ブリュッセルグリフォンの子が通りかかりました。非常に珍しい犬種で、このあたりでは他に１頭見た事あるだけです。

さあ帰ろう、とスタスタ歩き出すと、バムちゃんが追いついてきて、タイガと道の真ん中で遊び始めてしまいました。

As we started to walk again, Bum caught up with Taiga and they began playing in the middle of the road.

リアちゃんも参加したそう。

Leah wants to join in.

大人たちに無視されながらも、食い込んでいきます。

The grownups kept ignoring her but she wouldn't take "no" for an answer.

相当バムちゃんのことが気に入ったようです。

キンカンライム Limequat

 今年のキンカンライムは、実の数は少ないですがサイズが大きいです。

The limequat plant has fewer fruits this year but the fruits are larger than in previous years. 

こうやって離れたところから撮っても、実が生っているのが分かるくらい。（タイガの口にヨダレが垂れていますが、これはストレスが原因ではなく、写真を撮るためにオヤツで釣った直後なので、好物を食べた余韻のヨダレです。）

Although the plant is still young, it is a stable producer.  (Taiga has saliva on her lower jaw.  It is not due to stress.  Rather, it is the result of my bribing her with her favourite treat so that she would pose for the camera.)

キンカンライムは金柑とキーライムの交配種と言われています。今年の実のサイズは、金柑や先日購入したキーライムよりもずっと大きいです。ただし、キーライムの本元の東南アジアのライムは小蜜柑サイズなので、それより小さいです。

The limequat is said to be a cross between the Key lime and the kumquat.  The limequat fruits are larger than those of kumquats but smaller than the Southeast Asian limes which are the original of Key limes.

これで金柑のように甘いと嬉しいのですが、2月頃に黄色くなってもライム味のままで、苦みのある酸っぱさです。ポジティブに捉えれば、普通のライムは緑のうちに利用しないと香がなくなってレモンのような風味になるけど、キンカンライムならライムのシーズンが10月に終わった後も、いつでも使いたいときに使えると言えます。

The taste of the fruit remains almost unchanged when the outer skin becomes yellow in February-March, whereas the normal lime becomes like a lemon once the skin loses its green colour in late October.  This means that, with the limequat, you can enjoy the lime taste for many months.

タイガは柑橘類の臭いが苦手です。

今はまだ種無しスダチを使っているときなので、キンカンライムの出番はあとになります。

玄関前の食用菊はほぼ満開です。

毎日眺めているだけで満足なので、完全に観賞用です。

公園で At the park

 公園に着いたら、初めて見るフレンチブルドッグの子がいました。ルイ君、生後9か月の男の子です。背中にリュックを担いでいるのが可愛いです。ファスナーつきで、ちゃんとバッグの機能を果たせます。

とても人好きで、私を押し倒そうな勢いですり寄ってきました。スムーズコートのワンコは体温が直に伝わってくるので暖かいです。対して、タイガの毛は触ると夏でも冷たい。

A new face we met at the entrance of the park - 9 months old, male French Bulldog named Louis.  He was super-friendly and snuggled up to me, almost knocking me down to the ground.

私と挨拶したあと、タイガに注意を向けましたが、

タイガはなぜか、顔がフラットなタイプの犬種は避け気味です。決して不快な体験をしたわけではないのですが。

Louis then directed his attention towards Taiga, but she was not too keen on flat-faced breeds.  I cannot imagine why, since she has never had any bad encounter with any of them.

近くの草地では甲斐犬のヒナとセナがいました。

In the field nearby, we saw Hina and Sena, the Kaiken sisters.

ヒナの耳からして、まだ疑似ヒートの興奮気味な状態が残っているのでしょうか。先日会ったときは結構、気がたっていました。

When we saw Hina the other day, she was in a pseudo-heat state and quite aggressive.  It seems to have subsided somewhat but still excitable.

セナは尻尾を垂らして、もう家に帰りたそう。

In contract, Sena was out of sorts - she simply wanted to go home.

ヒナひとりで大興奮です。

The contrast between Hina and Sena was remarkable.

セナは完全に意気消沈で、オシリのかたちがジャーマンシェパードのように垂れています。

Sena almost looks sad.

ワンコのボディーランゲージって正直で、見ていて本当に面白いです。（それにしても、タイガ太い。）

その後は、林を通って上のほうのオヤツスポットを目指しました。

After that, we went up to the spot where Taiga could expect a treat.

この公園でタイガの一番好きなスポットです。この顔、うちに迎えた日の表情を思い出させます。

This face always reminds me of the look she had when I brought her home from the breeder's 8 years ago.

そんなことはどうでも良いタイガは、目ヂカラでオヤツを催促。

Regardless of my getting emotional, Taiga just wanted a treat.

帰ろうとして、さっきの草地の横を通ったらバードウオッチャーたちが重たそうなカメラを構えていました。

On our way home, we passed by the same field and saw bird watchers with heavy cameras.

そうっと近づいて何がいるのか尋ねたら、アオゲラが柿を食べに来るのを待っているあいだ、暇つぶしにメジロを撮っているとのことでした。

They were taking shots of birds that came to feed on the ripe persimmon fruits.

デビルズフードケーキ Devil's Food Cake

 この前ご近所からいただいたチョコレートを使って、デビルズフードケーキを作りました。生地には塩の代わりに苦いインスタントコーヒーを少し入れて、クセの強い味つけにしました。飾りのチョコレートの絞り出しに使った口金が小さかったので、ケーキ全体を覆うのに延々と時間がかかりました。飾りの段階まで来ると、体力的に疲弊していて手が震えたので、ミミズが這ったような、はたまたメデューサの髪の毛のような仕上がりになりました。

I made a devil's food cake with a part of the enormous chocolate that my neighbour gave me the other day.  By the time I came to pipe out the garnish, I was exhausted with my hands unsteady.  The result was that the chocolate strings were not straight and the cake looked like the head of Medusa.

パッションフルーツ Passion Fruits

 先日開花したばかりのパッションフルーツの幼果が、みるみるうちに肥大しました。屋内管理とはいえ、こんなに涼しい季節に本当に育つとは思いませんでした。写真の実は、一番下のものから、第１花、第３花、第２花からです。第３花だけは別のツルについています。

Following the recent flowering, the young fruits are growing by the day.  Starting from the bottom, fruit from the first, 3rd, and 2nd flowers (the 3rd flower belongs to another vine, whereas all the rest, including 2 flower buds at the top, are on one same vine).

これは第１花の実。鶏卵のSサイズくらいになりました。

これは第３花の実。現在、ウズラ卵より若干小さい程度。

This is the smallest, from the 3rd flower, belonging to a separate vine.

第１，２花と同じツルには蕾があと２個あります。これらも日々育っているので開花するかもしれません。

先日、近所のJAで見つけた黒生姜は、ビニールポットから出してみたら、２個のイモから成る苗だったので簡単に分離できました。（後で写真を見て、タイガの優雅さに驚愕。これでも女の子ですが。）

The black ginger plants that I bought a few days ago.  I replanted them in separate plastic pots.

寒くなるまで軒下に置いて、冬の間は無加温の東向きの部屋に置く予定です。来年の初夏には果樹の間で地植えにするつもりですが、それまでは過保護気味に管理。

I will keep them indoors during the upcoming winter and plant them in the soil early next summer, in the half shade of plum trees.
