公園で At the park

 昨日とは打ってかわって青空の公園。日差しは強いけど風がとても冷たかったです。カマキリがコナラの主幹を地味に上っていました。ガーデナーにとっての益虫です。

A beautiful blue sky this morning with crisp breeze, in such a contrast to yesterday's weather.  I saw a praying mantis climbing up a tree, a gardener's friend.

公園の上のほうへ行くと、先日ゴロウが行きたかった方角へタイガが引っ張りました。何やらワンコが甲高い声で要求吠えしているのが聞こえます。

Taiga suddenly wanted to turn left as we were walking up the path - we heard a high-pitched voice of a dog.

仔犬のころ、度胸をつけさせるためにちょっとでも高いところへ上るとオヤツを与えていたので、今でも自分から石垣の上にのぼってドヤ顔でオヤツを待っています。

古代家のある林を抜けると、

向こうの草地でヒナやセナたちが遊んでいました。

In the field across the road, we saw Hina and Sena, both female Kaiken.

ボーダーのペッパー君が林の向こうからでも聞こえる声でさっきからないていたのですが、どうやらヒナの臭いが原因のようです。ヒナは２，３年前に手術済みですが、本来なら今ヒートが来ているときらしく、それに伴う独特の臭いを発しているようです。タイガもそうでした。生後11か月で避妊手術をしたのに、その後３年くらいは数か月ごとに家で私が異様な臭いに悩まされていました。人間にとってはくっさい臭いでも、ペッパー君には放っておけない臭いのようです。ムリですが。

The high-pitched voice was that of Pepper, a young male Border Collie.  Apparently, Hina is emitting a scent which normally comes with heat.  Hina was spayed a few years ago but, as it happened with Taiga also, some hormone works a trick and male dogs think that the female is in genuine heat.  In Taiga's case, it kept coming back every 6 months for about 3 years.

ヒナはそのホルモン分泌の影響を受けてか、今朝はとてもいきり立っていました。いつもならタイガに対してとても低姿勢なのに、今朝はともすれば食って掛かりそうな勢いでした。ヒナの耳と尻尾に表れています。

Hina was highly on edge this morning.  Normally, she is very subservient to Taiga and me, but not this morning.  She even growled at Taiga a few times as she sniffed in an aggressive manner.

ペッパーはヒナが手術済みであることを理解できないので、甲高い声でしきりに近づこうとしていますが、ヒナは完全無視。

Pepper does not seem to understand that it is not real.

甲斐犬たちは早々に引き上げましたが、ペッパーは名残惜しそう。

We left the place early leaving Pepper in a longing mood.

パッションフルーツの花 Passion Fruit Flower

 雨が止むのを待って公園へ朝散歩に行きました。昨日の青空がウソのようにどんよりしています。

In contrast to yesterday's blue sky, it drizzled today for more than half of the day.  We caught the respite in rain and had a walk in the park.

うちのニラにそっくりな葉っぱをした株が開花中です。

帰宅してタイガは玄関前で座り込み。家の中に入るのが退屈なようで、私が庭で片付けものをしている間だけ外に出しておきました。今日は11月のような寒さなので蚊の心配はありません。

Back home, I had some tidying up to do in the garden, so Taiga sat outside the porch and watched me work.  The temperature was as low as mid-November today and there was no need to worry about mosquitoes for Taiga.

ノコンギク（左下）が咲き始めていますが、去年までの勢いがありません。

黄色の食用菊（松風）はまだ蕾です。

2階の部屋に上がったら、何とパッションフルーツの花が咲いていました。今朝起きて最初に見たときは未だ白い花びらの気配もないくらい緑のガクがしっかり閉じていたのに。花はジミなのかハデなのか判断に迷いますが、正直「おどろおどろしい」という印象。鼻を近づけるとかすかに甘酸っぱい香りがしました。

When I went upstairs, I had a nice surprise - the biggest flower bud on the passion fruit plant had opened.  It was still a firm bud when I saw it the first thing this morning.

１本の支柱に蕾のあるツルを２本（AとB）括り付けて越冬です。青円で囲んだ蕾はBのツルのもので、赤円のはよりしっかりしたツルAのもの。

I selected strongest-looking two vines A and B (red and blue), and tied them to a supporting prop so as to keep the plant inside during the winter.

これ↓が本体で、グルグル巻きですが越冬のためのコンパクト仕立てです。この苗を買って以来の観察結果として、このようにグルグル巻きでは孫ツルといえども蕾はつかないようです。なので、来年の初夏にはツルをほぐして体勢を立て直します。

This is the main body of the plant.  After watching the plant since I bought it a few months ago, I have come to the conclusion that you do not get flower buds on vines tied like this.  So, I will untie them next spring and let them grow more freely.

これ↓はツルAとBの先っちょ。越冬中にこれ以上伸びないように寸止めしてあります。

Vine A and B will pass the winter in this state and I have pinched the end of each so that they do not extend any more.  There are 4 flower buds in all (including the one that opened this morning). 

公園で At the park

 四中近くの草地でタイガの用が済んだ後どの方向へ行こうかブラブラしていたら、近所のゴロウが到着しました。ゴロウが走り出したので、タイガはまるで藪のかげから奇襲攻撃をかけるかのような姿勢。

As we were sauntering in the park, my neighbour and Goro arrived and spotted us.  Taiga crouching as if to pounce on Goro from behind a bush.

一緒に中央公園を歩くことにしました。

We headed towards the centre of the Johoku Park.

今日は大陸からの冷たい空気が入ってきて、快晴でも風が少しでも吹こうものなら寒かったです。

After another rainy day yesterday, it was such a nice change this morning to see a clear blue sky, and with crisp air.

公園上のほうへ着くとY字に分かれるところで、ゴロウが左側へ行こうと踏ん張って動きません。でも、長い散歩にしたかったので、私たちの行きたい道へ向いました。

ゆっくりと緑の中を散歩。

We thoroughly enjoyed the greenery in the park.

帰ろうとして公園から出たところで、これまた近所のウメちゃんにばったり。到着したばかりです。

When we came out of the park, we saw Ume, a female Kishu-ken, and our neighbour.

ウメちゃんはとても美しい紀州犬。

Ume is a beautiful Kishu with the signature ears facing forward.

会うときはいつも久しぶりなので、ウメちゃんは嬉しすぎて興奮気味です。

In spite of the fact that we all live in such proximity, we rarely meet Ume.  So, Ume is always excited to see us.

ゴロウママがオヤツを出したので皆うれしそう。

Goro's mom took out some treats.

どんなにオヤツが欲しくても決してケンカになりません。

However eager they are to get a treat, they never get into fight.

カボチャのプリン Pumpkin Puddings

 好物野菜のカボチャを使ってプリンを作りました。牛乳の一部を生クリームに置き換えたので、とても濃厚な仕上がりです。

I made pumpkin puddings with milk and heavy cream which resulted in a very firm and rich texture.

ミカン Tangerines

 今年は柑橘類の生り年のようです。珍しくブラッドオレンジのモロでさえ、たわわに生っています。

これ↓は、モロに接いだ田口早生。一部がうっすら色づき始めています。

All the citrus trees are doing well this year, after a very quiet year last year (they tend to be biennial).  These are tangerines called Taguchi Wase, grafted onto Moro (blood orange).  They ripen towards the end of the year.

葉っぱの陰のはまだまだ青いですが、中には巨大果があるので年末頃に完熟になるのが楽しみです。

こちらはバルコニーに置いてある鉢植えの石地フリー。一昨年は鈴なりだったので、去年は裏年でしたが、今年また頑張っています。柑橘類の有難い性質は、鉢植えでも実のサイズが地植えのと変わらないくらい大きなのが生ることです。

Ishiji Virus-Free, growing in a 30cm pot on the balcony.  This is a prolific variety even when planted in a pot.

今年初成りの日南の姫。３個だけ実を着けました。セールスコピーは、超早生の品種であることですが、その割には色づきが遅いです。南向きバルコニーで日当たりは文句ないはずですが。

This is Hinano-Hime that I bought 2 years ago.  This is also growing in a 30cm pot on the balcony.  It is an early-ripening variety with harvest starting mid-September.

今日も雨で、しかも震えるほど寒い。おかげで先日買った菊の花が長持ちしそうです。地植えにしたので冬芽を沢山だしてほしいです。

Another rainy day today and the flowers of the plant I bought a few days ago are lasting well due to the cold temperature.

こちらは玄関前の黄花の食用菊松風。とても綺麗な花が咲くので楽しみです。

The flip side of the cold days is that this yellow variety is taking longer than usual to start flowering.

フランスパン Baguettes

 今日は天気予報よりも涼しかったので、久しぶりにバゲットを作りました。フランス産の準強力粉リスドォル100%です。220℃で30分、焼き上がりが近づくと台所が良い匂いで一杯になります。

It was cooler than forecast today, so I baked baguettes for a change.  As the baking came to the end, the kitchen was full of nice smell.

焼き上がり。オーブンから出した途端に、急激な温度差でバリバリ音を立てて騒がしいです。

The moment I took the baguettes out of the oven, they started crackling due to the sudden change of temperature.

ちゃんと「耳」もできています。

'Ears'

キーライムの種 Key lime seeds

 昨日のキーライムの実が古くならないうちにと、種を取り出しました。実の一つ一つを丁寧に解体して時間がかかったのですが、全部終わったところで気づいたら、最初の頃の種が水につかっているうちに膨張して、根っこが顔を出し始めていました。

種の保存にこんなに必死なのかと感動して、全部撒きました。年内には発芽すると思いますが、室内で越冬したら来年の春に最も強健そうな幼苗を３，４本選んで育てる予定です。

I extracted seeds from the Key limes that I got yesterday.  It took a long time for me to open the limes one by one, and I noticed that the seeds from the earlier fruits had expanded in fresh water and roots started to come out.  

I sowed every one of the seeds in soil.  They will probably germinate before the end of this year and, if some of them survive the winter in a warm room, I will select 3 or 4 strongest plants to grow in larger pots.

「新疆なつめ王」の最後の実。試しに砂糖煮にしてみます。

The last of Xinjian Jujube.  The plant fruited for the first time this year and, hopefully, the fruits will be larger next year.
