スモモの幼果 Young plum fruits

 アンズのサニーコットに高接ぎしてある「いくみ」が色づき始めました。梅雨明けの７月10日頃に完熟になる予定です。カタログのキャッチコピーとは裏腹に、小粒、かつ食感はズルズルの果肉に水っぽい味。なので、本体は処分してこの一枝しか残っていません。花粉が多い品種なので授粉用に残してあります。

'Ikumi' grafted onto an apricot tree.  This variety ripens in the first half of July, just after the rainy season.

上の写真の同じ枝を下から見上げると、こう。

10号鉢に植えてある「彩の姫」は今年が結実2年目で、カタログ通りの豊産性。おまけにとても美味しい品種なので大変気に入っています。

'Saino-hime' grown in a pot.  This variety comes into season after Ikumi, in the second half of July.  It is not only prolific but also very delicious.

こちらは「サマーエンジェル」、８月の完熟品種です。いろんな都合から今年は日陰気味なので、実が小粒っぽいです。去年、生った実を食べたら、スーパーで売られているのよりも小さいけど樹上完熟だったのでこちらの方が美味しかったです。

'Summer Angel' ripens in August.  The fruit is very large and sweet.

ローガンベリーのワイマテはブラックベリーのように雨に弱くて、もたもたしていると樹上でカビ始めます。収穫したあとも、実がとても柔らかいので貯蔵性はありません。なので、その日に生食するか、即冷凍しています。対して、ジョーン・スクワイアの実は、個々のツブの皮がしっかりしているので貯蔵性があります。

'Waimate' (loganberry) and Joan Squire (raspberry).  Waimate gets spoiled by rain easily.  Moreover, it has no shelf life so I have to either consume right away or freeze for later use.  In contract, Joan Squire's skin is firm and keeps very well.

公園で At the park

 昨日の一日中雨の天気のあと、公園に着いても蒸し蒸ししていました。入口の草地で年輩のご夫婦につれられた可愛いマルチーズに会いました。2歳半のマリちゃんだそうです。

It rained all day yesterday and, when we arrived at the park this morning, it was very humid.  We met a new face - a 2 and a half-year old, female Maltese named Mari.

タイガはマリちゃんとの挨拶よりも、ご主人に頭を撫でてもらって嬉しそう。

Ｔaiga was more interested in getting a pat on the head from Ｍari’s dad.

「甲斐犬なのにおとなしいね」と褒められました。

He could not believe that a Kaiken could be so gentle and friendly.

その後は公園上のほうに移動して、おやつが約束されている岩の上で一休み。おやつも終わったし帰ろうとしたら、まだ満足していないのか動くのを拒否。この↓目つき。

We went over to the other side of the park where Taiga always gets a treat by hopping onto the boulder.  She got it, but was not satisfied yet.  She absolutely refused to move to go home.

タイガが子犬の頃、姉が電話してくるたびに「ブサイ子」呼ばわりしていましたが、この顔では反論できないかも。

A face only a mother can love.

その口の泡は何とかならない？

At least, do something about the saliva.

オヤツの追加が欲しくて興奮したら、口の泡が瞼の上に飛んでしまいました。

She got so excited with the additional treat that she sneezed, with the result that the foam was blown and landed on her left eyelid.

これで８歳にもなる大人？

Can you believe that she is a mature dog of 8 years old?

あんまり暑いので、とにかく帰ることにしました。でも公園出口の草地で動かなくなりました。冷たい草の上で体を冷やしています。

As we were passing through the field near the exit, she stopped and got down on her stomach.

何を言っても、ゴーイングマイウェイです。

Whatever I said had no effect - she was enjoying the cool of the grass,

休んでいたはずが、到着したばかりのジャックラッセルの女の子を見たとたん、飛び出していきました。元気が戻った勢いで帰りました。

until she saw a Jack Russel Terrier entering the park, and Taiga got up to meet her.

ラズベリー Raspberry

 ラズベリーのジョーン・スクワイアが色づき始めています。

Raspberry 'Joan Squire' starting to ripen.  

夏果は瑞々しい外観で綺麗です。味も、個人的には夏果のほうが好きです。秋果は酸味が強くて夏果のほんわり感がなくなるからです。

This variety produces two crops a year.  I prefer the summer berries which have a milder taste than the autumn ones.

最初の写真の１個を試し採り。果肉がしっかりしていて潰れません。対して、ローガンベリーのワイマテは果肉が柔らかくて潰れやすいです。

I picked one to try (the berry in the first photo).  The fruit is firm to the touch, unlike the Waimate loganberries.

今日の収穫。1個のジョーン・スクワイア以外は全てワイマテです。

Just one Joan Squire - the rest is Waimate (loganberry).

ローガンベリーのチーズケーキ Loganberry Cheesecake

 収穫したローガンベリーのワイマテを使ってチーズケーキを作りました。ラズベリーよりも若干濃厚な風味のあるベリーです。

I made a cheesecake with home-grown Loganberries, a variety called 'Waimate' which was developed in New Zealand.  Please see the video.

フィンガーライム Finger Lime

 フィンガーライムのダラムズエメラルドに実がついています。今年収穫が見込めるのはこの品種だけです。一番大きな実はこれで、現在４センチくらいの長さになっています。

Finger lime: 'Durham's Emerald' with lots of young fruits.  This one is about 4cm long and quite likely to stay on the tree to maturity.

次に大きいのはこれ↓。

This is the second laergest.

こちらは2個同時に育っています。

These are the 3rd largest.

他にも小さなのが４，５個あるので、数個が収穫までいきそうです。

公園で At the park

 公園へ行く途中の駐車場でタイガが動かなくなりました。フェンスの向こう、車体の下に猫がいるらしいですが、私には見えません。

When we passed by a a car park near home, Taiga got rivetted - she saw a cat sitting under a car.

金網の下に鼻を突っ込んで夢中です。

She wants to go over there, but no way.  Cats in this area are very audacious - they spit at Taiga and they actually come out onto the street and follow us at a brisk pace.  If we stop and turn around, the cat stops.  When we resume our walk, the cat stalks us again.  I can laugh at it in the day time, but when they do this during our evening walk, it is quite scary in the dark.

散歩中に出会う猫って、ものすごく気が強いです。塀の向こうからタイガに威嚇したかと思うと、私たちが通り過ぎたあとも、道路に出てきて後を追いかけて来るのです。昼間は笑えますが、夜の散歩でこれをやられるとコワイです。こちらが立ち止まると猫も足を止め、私たちがまた歩き出すと足を速めてついて来ます。

公園に着くと、この時期、私の大好きな香り３選（スイカズラ、ナツメ、シナノキ）のひとつが漂ってきました。シナノキ（科の木）が満開です。自宅でナツメの花の香りをかいだあと、公園にくるとシナノキの香り。もう天国の気分です。

At the park, Japanese linden trees were in full bloom - the scent is so intoxicating.

It's like being in heaven.

小さくて地味な花ですが、アップで見ると可愛いです。

それにしても暑い。木陰から出て向こうの林に着くまで何秒この暑い日差しに晒されるのかと思うと、動く気になりません。

The sun is so strong and it takes determination to go out of the nice shade to reach the woodland across the field.

やっと、公園上のほうに移動して売店広場に到着。タイガは肩で息をしています。

At last, we reached the upper part of the park, near the food court.

木陰が心地よいので、腰掛けてタイガのオヤツタイム。

The shop was closed this morning so we sat down for Taiga's treat time.

オヤツの後はドッグランへは寄らずに帰ることにしました。

It was too hot to go to the dog park and we started to go home.

公園出口の草の上でタイガが動かなくなりました。草が冷たくて気持ち良いようです。

Taiga couldn't move and sat down in the field near the exit.

と、友達のシーちゃん。二人とも大興奮です。

There comes Shion, a friend we have not seen for a few weeks.

今日はもう知っているワンコには会えないのかと思っていた矢先でした。シーちゃんたちも同様だったそうで、やはりこう暑いと皆さん早めに散歩を切り上げているのでしょう。

Shion was the only familiar face we saw this morning and, likewise, Taiga was the only one they saw.  The hot weather sends dogs home earlier.

シーちゃんは保護された元野犬なので親はどんな個体だったのか分かりませんが、尻尾の毛が長くてとてもユニークです。顔や体は、ほんの少しハスキーか黒柴っぽいです。

暑いし陽ざしが強いので、目がショボショボ。

The sunlight is so strong that Shion cannot keep her eyes open.

それでもカメラ目線になってくれました。

Still, she gives me a nice smile.

ナツメ開花 Jujube flowers

 ナツメの開花が始まりました。今満開なのはスーパージャイアントと和田玉棗の小苗。地植えにした新疆棗王は、まだチラホラ開花が始まったばかりですが、花のサイズは他の２品種のよりずっと大きくてしっかりしています。

スーパージャイアントは南側バルコニーに置いてあります。苗は去年になって急に成長して、おびただしい数の蕾が出ています。今年こそは、と期待しています。栽培初年度にビー玉サイズの実が数個生りましたが、甘くてとても気に入りました。うちにある品種の中で生食に最も適していると思います。

'Super Giant' with lots of flowers.  The plant grew significantly since the start of spring this year and I have never seen so many flower buds, so I am hoping that some fruits will come out of this.

毎日、様々な小さい虫がやってきて花の上を這いつくばっているので、いくらかは授粉に役立っていると思います。それにしても、花は良い香り。

The scent of the flowers is unbelievable.

東側バルコニーの和田玉棗。苗が小さいので花数は少ないです。

'Hetian Jujube' plant is still tiny.  This variety produces very large fruits but I personally feel that this variety is better as dried rather than eaten fresh like the Super Giant.

これら３つの丸いのは、開花直後の状態。このまま緑色で２週間ほどたてば結実の希望がもてますが、３-４日のうちに色がクリーム色になると、落ちます。

These 3 round things are how they look just after flowering.  If pollination was successful, they will remain green for weeks but, if they turn pale, they will fall off.
