夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 夕方散歩で城北中央公園に着いたら、柴犬のコムギちゃんに会えました。コムギちゃん一家は２年ほど前に池袋に引っ越したので、会うのはそれ以来初めてです。今日は同じく柴犬のコンタ君と約束があって城北公園まで来たそうです。

We went to the Johoku Central Park for our evening walk, where we ran into Komugi, a female Shiba Inu.  Komugi's family moved away to Ikebukuro about 2 years ago, and this was the first time meeting her since then.  Apparently, Komigi's mom had arranged to meet Konta's mom at a field nearby.

約束の草地まで一緒に歩きましたが、タイガは嬉しくて歩きながらもコムギちゃんにスリスリ。コムギちゃんとコンタ君はタイガよりずっと年下で、6歳くらいのはずです。

We walked together to the appointed field.  Taiga was so happy to see Komugi that she could not leave her alone as we were walking.  Both Komugi and Konta are about 6 years old now, half of Taiga's age.

コムギちゃんたちと別れたあと、私たちは公園の上のほうの草地を目指しました。

After parting with Komugi, we headed for the higher ground.

この草地の端に１本だけある八重桜が満開です。

There is a solitary cherry tree with double petals in this field.

私の好みのハデハデな花。眺めながら、うっとり。あー、これが自宅の庭にあったなら、花は砂糖漬けにしていろんなスイーツに使えるし、また葉っぱは塩漬けにして、桜餅や道明寺などの和菓子に使えそうです。

My favourite double petal cherry blossoms.  I could look at the flowers for hours.  If I had a tree like this in my garden, I would pickle the flowers in sugar and use them in many kinds of sweets.  Leaves could be pickled in salt and used for wrapping sakura mochi sweets.

私が桜に見とれている間、タイガはジッとがまんで待っていました。甲斐犬は本当に辛抱強いです。

While I was absorbed in the cherry blossoms, Taiga was patiently waiting for me.  Kaiken dogs are so stoic.

公園下のほうのドッグランを覗いてから帰ります。

We went down to the lower grounds, to pass by the dog park.

ランの手前の通路沿いでは、ボランティアの方々が管理している花壇が花盛りでした。

Near the dog park, there is a flower bed maintained by a group of volunteers, now full of spring flowers.  

一年中、花が絶えないですが、春はとくに綺麗。

Throughout the year, this flower bed has something to show, but spring is the best time.

ボランティアのグループはプラカードによると、「すみれ会」というようです。

The placard shows the name of the volunteers' group.

帰りに通った草地では、コムギちゃん（左）とコンタ君（右）が遊んでいました。

In the field we crossed on our way home, we met Komugi (left) and Konta (right).

コンちゃんは柴独特の唐突な興奮状態をみせてくれます。

Konta is a typical Shiba Inu, with sudden and excited movements, which is perplexing to me who is used to Taiga's Kaiken behaviour.

リンゴなど Apple trees etc

 リンゴのグラニースミスが咲いています。昨日、今日と良い天気のおかげです。

Flowers on the Granny Smith tree, thanks to the fine weather yesterday and today.

蕾と花との混合状態が綺麗です。

This is my favourite phase with pink buds and open flowers.

蕾の集合体はたくさんあるので、あと数日は見て楽しめそうです。

There are a lot of flower bud clusters, so I should be able to enjoy watching them develop for several days.

こちらは赤実リンゴの「紅の夢」。天気予報では晴れが続くようなので、今週末までには開花するでしょう。

This is the red-fleshed variety called Kurenai-no-Yume.   According to the forecast, we can expect dry weather for about a week, so these red buds should start opening by the end of this week.

去年、バルコニーが暑すぎて枯れそうになったコーネリアンチェリーのカザンラク。夏の途中から庭に降ろして日陰で養生させたので枯死は回避できました。

This is cornelian cherry, Kazanlak.  The tree nearly died on the balcony last summer because it was too hot.  I brought it down and kept it in half shade ever since.

とても健康そうな葉っぱです。今年は栽培３年目なので、是非この秋までには来年用の蕾が確認できると嬉しいです。

The new leaves look healthy and beautiful.  This is the 3rd year of growing, and I am hoping to see flower buds for next year, by the end of this summer.

これはラズベリーのルビービューティー。種無しスダチの根元に植えたのを、タイガが何度もいたずらして引っこ抜いていました。５本あった地上部のうち１本はタイガに根っこ付近を齧られてアウト。さらに２本はこの場所に植え付けたあと復活することもなく枯れました。残ったのはこの２本。何とか徐々に増やしたいです。

This is raspberry, Ruby Beauty.  I took it out of a pot and planted it under a citrus tree last autumn, hoping to grow the bush bigger.  During winter, Taiga dug it out several times in spite of my replanting it with care.  Of the 5 stems, one was bitten off near the root.  After replanting in this spot, two other stems died and never budded.  These remaining two are precious and I hope there will be new shoots in due course.

公園で At the Park

 昨日は一日中雨でしたが、今日は一変、青空の一日でした。城北公園手前の川沿いではハナミズキ（左）が開き始めていました。

After the rainy day yesterday, we had fine weather from early morning.   Along the Shakujii River that leads to the Johoku Central Park, there is a row of red and white dogwood trees (left), and they are now starting to bloom.

ソメイヨシノの花はほぼ散って、葉っぱのほうが目立っています。

Flowers of the Somei Yoshino cherry trees are almost gone, with new leaves growing more prominent.

通路の奥には一本だけ、ソメイヨシノではない遅咲きの木があります。たぶん、まとまった数の苗木を注文した際、１本の品種違いが紛れ込んでいたのでしょう。

At the end of the path, there is one tree that is definitely not a Somei Yoshino.  It was probably included by mistake when they ordered a bunch of young Somei Yoshino trees for this field.

この木には小粒のサクランボが生るので野鳥に人気。果実は暖地サクランボを更に小さくしたようなサイズで、果肉も果皮も黒くて味は濃厚。

Unlike Somei Yoshino, this tree produces cherries, attracting a lot of wild birds.  The cherries are smaller than the cultivated variety called 'Danchi', whose fruits are already on the smaller side.   They are like tiny black cherries with strong taste and flavour.

枝ぶりだけでなく花びらも、ソメイヨシノとは違います。

The foliage is different, as well as the shape of the petals, from those of Somei Yoshino.

日光がきつくて暑いので、タイガはバテ気味。

The sun was strong, and Taiga was getting tired.

夕方散歩で城北中央公園へ行き、帰りしな、久しぶりにカンタに会えました。

For the evening walk, we went back to the Johoku Central Park and, on our way home, we met Kanta for the first time after a few months.

ワンコたちを横並びに座らせて写真を撮りたかったのですが、タイガが非協力的でソワソワ動き回ってばかり。結局私のカメラでは一枚もまともなショットがとれませんでした。タイガはもうすぐ12歳、カンタは現在8歳だそうですが、タイガよりずっと落ち着いています。

We wanted to take photos of them sitting side by side.  However, Taiga was too excited to see Kanta and would not sit still.  In the end, I did not manage to get any decent shots.  Taiga will be 12 years old soon, while Kanta is 8 years old, but he looks a lot more mature than Taiga.

When I opened my mail after supper at home, I found the following two photos from Kanta's owner.  Thank you!

こうやって見ると、カンタのマズルは結構長くて狼っぽく見えます。しかも、脚が長い。

In this photo, Kanta has a long muzzle, making him look like a wolf.  He also has long legs.

リンゴの蕾 Apple Flower Buds

 クッキングアップルのグラニースミス（手前）と紅の夢（奥）の両方に、今年はたくさんの蕾が出ています。栽培３年目にしてもうこんなに花がつくとは思っていませんでした。仕立て方はスピンドル風。主幹型よりも場所をとらず、かつ収穫量が多いことを期待して試すことにしました。

I grow two cooking apples, Granny Smith (right) and 'Kurenai-no-Yume' (left).  This is the third year of growing and they both have a lot of flower buds already.  I am trying the spindle method in my own way, hoping that it will be space saving and to get more harvest.

これはグラニースミスの主幹の頂点で、矢印から上の部分は高接ぎした紅玉です。

This is the top end of Granny Smith.  The part above the red arrow is 'Kogyoku' which I grafted about a year ago.

The first flower of the year.

蕾のうちの濃いピンク色が開花につれて白くなるのを見るのも楽しい。

I love watching the pink flower buds turning into white flowers.

こちらは紅の夢で、蕾の色は赤。去年の初開花では、花びらがピンクでした。

This is red-fleshed Kurenai-no-Yume whose flower buds are red.  When the buds opened last year, they remained pink.

去年の暮にご近所からいただいたアルプス乙女の枝を紅の夢に高接ぎしました。やっと芽吹き始めましたが、この段階では穂木に蓄えられていた養分で育っているだけなので、活着したかどうかまだ分かりません。

The scion of crab apple called 'Alps Otome' that my neighbour gave me late last year was grafted onto Kurenai-no-Yume.  The leaf buds have just started growing but, at this state, they are using the nutrition stored in the scion and does not necessarily mean that grafting was successful.

公園の上のほうの広場。

My favourite field at the upper part of the park.

ハナニラの季節です。公園で眺めるには綺麗な花ですが、球根を一個でも庭に放つと大変なことになります。

Ipheion uniforum flowers in bloom.  They are pretty flowers to look at in parks but not recommended for a small garden like mine.  Once I introduced a few bulbs, they exploded in number, and I have been trying for years to get rid of them.

ノムラモミジも葉っぱが出てきました。

New leaves on the red-leaf maple tree, called Nomura,  are coming out.

これから葉の色がどんどん濃い赤になります。

The leaves will be in dark red very soon.

香酸類柑橘 Limes and Lemon

 東向きバルコニーに置いてあるタヒチライムの開花が始まりました。

The Tahiti lime tree that is placed on the east side of upstairs balcony has started blooming.

咲き始めたばかりでもガラス戸を開けると芳香が漂ってきます。

Only a handful of flowers are open as yet, but the beautiful scent is quite noticeable when I open the glass door.

タヒチライムの隣に置いてある、種から育てたキーライムも蕾が膨らんできています。

Standing next to the Tahiti lime is the Key lime seedling, whose flower buds are also growing.  I grew this tree from the supermarket fruits imported from the US.

冬の間に蕾が確認されたこの枝のは中途半端な開き方なので、メシベが受粉できる状態なのか分かりません。念のため、タヒチライムのオシベが熟したら花粉を着けてみるつもり。

These flower buds came out early, in the middle of winter, and they are not open in a normal way.  I am not sure if the pistil is viable or not.  Nevertheless, when the Tahiti lime flowers are fully open, I will try to cross pollinate.

南向きバルコニーに置いてあるトゲ無しリスボンレモン。開花が始まる前に今ある２個の実を採ってレモンマーマレードにする予定です。

This is the thorn-free Lisbon lemon, on the south side of the balcony.   I am going to pick the two fruits before the flowers are open, and make lemon marmalade.

これもキーライムのようにメシベが蕾の中から飛び出しています。気温が足りないので普通に開花しないのか不明。

As with the Key lime, the flower buds of Lisbon lemon are not opening like they should - the pistil is out before the petals open.  Is this due to the insufficient heat?

玄関前の通路ではサギゴケが動きだしました。赤い丸で囲んであるのは何年も前からある園芸種で白花、よってサギゴケ。紫で囲んであるのは野良で、駐車場として放置されている近くの空き地から連れてきたもの。空き地にいたときは野良らしく小さな花だったのが、ここの環境が合っているのか、今では園芸種の白花に負けない花柄になっています。

Mazus miquelii Makino coming back into life for the summer.  The white flower variety is a cultivated type, while the purple flower variety was picked by me from an empty plot near my house that was used as a car park.  While the latter was a wild weed, the flowers were tiny.   After a few years in my garden, the flowers became as large as those of the cultivated variety.

練馬の渋谷園芸でわざわざこの紫色のが白花のと一緒に売られているのを見たときは笑ってしまいました。

When I saw both of these types in a large plant shop in Nerima, I chuckled inside.

私が地面に這いつくばるようにして草本を観察していたら、タイガが無言で圧をかけてきました。

As I was absorbed in observing the plants on the ground, Taiga was silently putting a pressure on me for a walk.
