公園で At the park

 昨日の一日中降った冷たい雨のあと、今日は晴れてはいたけど風が冷たくて防寒具なしでは外を歩けないほどでした。でも、公園では春の花があちこちで咲き始めています。

これはサンシュユ。日本やアジア大陸の野生種。うちのコーネリアンチェリーのカザンラクは花芽が未だ無いので、サンシュユを見て将来の開花をイメージしています。

We had freezing rain all day yesterday and, in contrast, the sky was clear today, but the wind was piercingly cold.  Nevertheless, spring flowers are coming out in the park.

This is Japanese cornel - same as the wild type that grows in the east Asian continent.  My cornelian cherry, Kazanlak, has no flower buds yet, so I can only dream of seeing these flowers on mine in some years.

ボケの花。ピンクのも赤い花のも株立ちなので、クサボケの仲間でしょうか。

These are flowering quince.  Both the pink flower bush and the red one stay short and spread sideways, unlike the tree-type flowering quince.  Both the bushy type and the tree type grow edible fruits.

ハクモクレンも満開。

この木の花は位置が高すぎるので届きませんが、もっと低い木で顔を近づけると何とも高貴な香がします。

This tree is too tall for me to reach the flowers, but they have a beautiful scent if you can get close to them.

タイガにとって幼馴染の子たち。ゴールデンドゥードルのメイちゃん（左、♀）とシーズーのコロちゃん（右、♂）で、メイちゃんはタイガより１歳上。

お揃いの服を着てカワイイので、写真をとるために並ばせようとしました。

Since they were wearing cute clothes, we decided to take pictures.

ワンコはソワソワ、チョロチョロ動いて人間の指示に従いません。

We wanted them to sit side by side, but they would never stay still.

やっと並んだと思ったら、皆カメラ嫌いなので視線を外している。

At last, they were in a line, but none of them were looking towards the camera.

メイちゃんママの指示が入って、こちらを向かせようとします。

May's mom instructs them to look this way.

まあ、こんなものでしょう。

そこへ黒柴のイチちゃん（♀）が到着。イチちゃんもタイガより１歳上で、やはり子犬時代からの友達。

Another old friend, a female Balck Shiba Inu named Ichi arrives.  She is also one year older than Taiga.

メイちゃんとイチちゃん。何だか男の子どうしに見える。

クリスマスローズ Christmas Roses

 今年はクリスマスローズの蕾がなかなか上がってこなかったので、開花を見るのを諦めていましたが、最近になって蕾らしいものが姿を現しました。

この苗は去年の３月末に買ったゴールド苗。お店のサイト上では１月末に撮影された綺麗な花が載っていたので、てっきり早咲き苗かと思っていました。届いた苗を地植えにしたら、去年の晩秋までには3-4倍に育っていました。

I had nearly given up about seeing flowers on my Christmas roses this spring.  However, I noticed new shoots a few days ago, which looked like flower buds.

I bought this plant in late March last year.  On the shop's site, this plant had a flower at the end of January 2024, so I thought it was an early blooming plant.  I planted it in the ground and, by winter last year, the plant had grown 3-4 times the original size.

現在、蕾らしきものが3個見当たります。

I can see new shoots that look like flower stems.

葉っぱの形をしたものをかき分けると、これは蕾で間違いなさそう。

Inside the leaves, there is a lump looking like a flower bud.

この苗は八重咲きゴールド苗がリリースされた初期の頃の苗の子孫。10株ほど買った元のゴールド苗は春を待たずに1-2か月のうちに全て枯れましたが、その3-4年後に姿を現した苗。上に上げた苗は初期のゴールド苗とオリエンタリスとの交配が進んで大柄になってしまいましたが、この実生苗は元の性質を良く引き継いでいます。すなわち、葉っぱは小さく、花茎は太くて短く、花は横向き又は上向きに咲く。

This is a seedling of one of the many golden Christmas rose plants that I bought more than 10 years ago.  The original plants died within 1-2 months of purchase, well before the arrival of spring.  However, 3-4 years later, I noticed a tiny seedling in the ground, and it took several more years before flowering.  This plant shows all the characteristics of original golden Christmas roses.  That is, the leaves are small, the flower stem is short and stout, and the flower faces sideways or upwards.  Nowadays, when you see golden Christmas roses, they are mostly orientalis hybrids with large leaves, lanky flower stems, and drooping flowers.

ナツメの現在 Jujubes now

 ナツメ苗は、前回の２月末の状態から着実に成長しています。天気の良い日には４時間くらい外に出して直射日光を当てて、外の空気になじませています。

Since the last posting at the end of February, the jujube buds have been steadily growing.  On sunny days, I place the plants on the balcony so that they can benefit from the direct sunlight.

早脆王：この苗は一節ずつ成長している印象。先に芽吹いた節の枝葉がある程度伸びると、次の芽が動き出すという動き方。今は上から２番目と３番目の節の芽が10cmくらいになっています。

Early Crisp King: The buds on this tree seem to come out one by one.  When the new shoot of the earlier bud reaches several centimeters long, the next node in waiting starts to move.  The shoots of the 2nd and 3rd nodes are now about 10cm long - long enough for the next one to come out.

下のほうの新たな芽は４番目の節。その後は、一番上の節が膨らみ始めているので次に芽吹きそう。

The smaller shoots at the bottom of the picture are from the 4th node.  After this one, the 1st node seems to be getting ready - it is getting slightly bulky.

写真では見えないですが、蕾が出ています。

Although hard to see in the picture, flower buds are already there.

無核金絲棗：気候が暖かくなって、木全体の節が一気に動き出しました。

Seedless Gold Thread: As the weather got warmer, the whole tree started to awaken.

この状態でも、既に蕾が確認できています。

Even at this stage, I can see flower buds (by using a magnifying glass).

蟠棗：注文した棗のうちの本命ですが、最も遅くに動き出しました。でも、生きていることが確認できただけでも嬉しい。

Panzao: This was the variety that I most wanted, but the last to come out of dormancy.  At least, I can now assure myself that the plant is alive and well, which is the most important thing.

恒常的な枝になる予定の芽に首ができてきたので、気候が安定して暖かくなれば成長に勢いがつくでしょう。

On what will be the permanent branch, the bud is already showing the neck, so once the weather becomes constantly warm, the growth will accelerate.

午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 今日は好天に恵まれて、午後の散歩の時間は冬の服装では暑いくらいでした。昨日の凍るような寒さとは対照的。

公園に着くと、売店のある広場で珍しい光景に出くわしました。レオンベルガーです。この犬種はまだまだ珍しく、現在、他に成犬２頭を連れた人をたまに見るくらいです。ドイツ原産の巨大な犬種で、性格はとても温厚だそうですが日本の住宅事情を考えると普及は中々難しそうです。

We had sunshine all day today and it was almost too warm to walk wearing winter clothes when we went out in the afternoon.  Such a contrast with the freezing weather of yesterday.

At the park, when we were walking through a square, I saw a rare sight - two Leonbergers.  They are still rare in Japan, and I have seen only one other person with two grown up Leonbergers in this park.  These dogs from Germany are very mild and good natured as pets but, when you consider the size of Japanese houses, they are likely to remain a rare breed.

とにかく手が大きいので、私の手と比較してみました。

I put my hand next to the mature dog's paw for comparison.

性格◎なワンコなので、初対面の私の手をペロリ。

He was such a gentle creature that he licked my hand even though this was a first-time meeting.

その次は顔を私に近づけてきました。

He then lifted his face closer to mine.

左の大きい子は４歳のゴジロウ君、体重は65kgもあるそうで、現在約20kgのタイガの３倍以上。右の子犬は生後３か月半のコマジロウ君、体重は25kg。25kgといえば、２年前のタイガのピーク時の体重でした。２頭とも同じ犬舎の出身で、子犬は成犬の甥っこだそうです。

The mature dog on the left is 4 years old, named Gojirou, weighing 65kg - more than 3 times the weight of Taiga (around 20kg).  The puppy on the right is 3 1/2 months old, named Komajirou, weighing 25kg - Taiga's peak weight 2 years ago.  They are from the same breeder and the puppy is a nephew of the mature dog.

ドイツ産の大型犬には今日の天気は暑すぎるのか、冷たい地面にペターっと長くなっていました。

For large dogs from Germany, today's weather must have been too warm.  They were both lying flat on the cold tiles.

この子は生後３か月半ということは、生まれてこのかた過ごしやすい気候しか経験していないということなので、これから夏の散歩は厳しそう。

For this 3 1/2 months old puppy, the weather has always been nice and cold since he was born.  Wait until the Japanese summer.

広場を少し歩いて出会ったのは同じく初対面の、小さな小さなワンコで名前はモモちゃん。この子も生後３か月半で、３回目のワクチンが終わったばかりだそうです。モモちゃんはほんの一瞬タイガのサイズに面食らった様子でしたが、すぐに平静を取り戻しました。

As we walked on a little, we met another new face - an itsy-bitsy Chihuahua named Momo.  She is also 3 1/2 months old and has just had her 3rd vaccine shot.  She was taken aback momentarily when faced with Taiga, but soon she regained herself.

体重1.5kg、小さくて真っ白でフワフワ。まるで人形のようです。

She weighs 1.5kg, and she is so tiny and fluffy, looking like a doll.

タイガと静かに挨拶できました。

She calmly greeted Taiga.

タイガばあちゃんはおこちゃまにはあまり興味が無いようなので、

Taiga at nearly 12 years old, was not much interested in this young lady,

私のほうに向かって来ました。

so she came towards me.

ああー、カワイイ！　こうやって足を乗せられても、全く重さを感じられません。

Awww, she is soooo cute!  When she put her angelic foot on my leg, I did not feel any weight at all.

こんなに小さくても知らない人やワンコと出くわしても落ち着いていて、まるで妖精のような子です。また会おうね。

She is so tiny and yet, she is totally calm when faced with larger dogs and strangers.  She is like a fairy.  Hoping to see her again soon.
