朝散歩 Morning Walk

 最近の冷え込みは厳しいですが、今朝は風が無かったので日向にさえいれば何とか凌げました。公園入口の林はすっかり落葉して寒々とした印象です。

It has been really cold recently.  However, so long as you are in the sun with no wind to bother you, it can be bearable.  Leaves of the deciduous trees at the entrance of the park are all gone, and the wood land looks bleak.

その林の奥で唯一 葉っぱが残っているのが、このトウカエデ。あたりで一番小さく、周りの木々が落葉したあとでやっと日を浴びるので、今になって黄葉です。

At the deep end of the woodland, there was just one tree, a kind of maple tree, still with leaves.  This tree being young and small, it is buried among the tall neighbours, and it was still green several days ago.  Only after the taller trees have lost their leaves, can this tree catch the sun.

ここは石神井川の向こうの工事現場を見渡せる場所。まだ草地だった頃、毎夕方に集まる犬の飼い主たちが元旦の日の出を見るためにこの場所に集まって、昇り始めた日を眺めながら小さなカップで清酒を飲んだことがありました。早く工事が終わって草地を眺めたいです。

From this higher ground, I get the whole view of the construction site across the Shakujii River.  They are building an underground anti-flood reservoir but, when the place was still a green field, we used to gather every evening to let the dogs play.  One New Year morning, dog owners gathered here to watch the sunrise.  As the top of the sun became visible, we toasted with tiny cups of sake.  I cannot wait to see the place restored to grassland.

陽だまり広場で小休止。タイガは子犬の頃からこの「オネエ座り」をしていましたが、年をとった今これをすると疲労感が伝わってきます。

We went up to the higher ground and had a short rest.  Taiga has always sat in this posture even when she was a puppy.  Now that she is old, sitting like this makes her look tired and sad.

満足そうに休んでいるので放っておいたら、

As she was enjoying her rest,

急にいつものスリゴロが始まりました。

she started her usual thing.

ホコリだらけ。年末シャンプーまであと数日、スッキリしてから正月を迎えます。

She is covered with bits of dry grass.  Never mind, she will have her last shampoo of 2024 in a few days.

帰ろうとしたら、向こうからヒナ・セナがやって来ました。久しぶりです。

As we were heading towards the park exit, Hina and Sena came along.

ヒナ（左）は幼い頃からタイガとは馴染みなので二人して大はしゃぎですが、セナはタイガと遊んだことがないのでクールな反応。

As usual, Hina (left) and Taiga are all excited - Hina has known Taiga since puppyhood. However, Sena, having never played with Taiga, does not feel any loyalty towards her.

セナはさらっとタイガの臭いを嗅ぐだけ。

Sena's interest in Taiga was just to take a quick sniff.

帰り道、歩道脇の花壇では「寒椿」が綺麗に咲いていました。この辺りでは道路脇の植え込みやマンションの垣根としてありふれた植物ですが、花はうっとりするほど綺麗です。椿とサザンカの交雑種だそうで、咲き方に大きなばらつきが見られ、この↓サザンカらしい花に加え、いかにも椿っぽい花もあります。

It is the season of sasanqua flowers, and this variety is most commonly used in fences in Tokyo.  This is a cross between sasanqua and camellia and, as such, there is some variation with some flowers looking more like camellias.  I like this↓ version, looking like a sasanqua flower.

鑑賞用の大実金柑が鈴なりの木がありました。

An ornamental kumquat tree laden with large fruits.  This variety is for its show only, and not suitable for eating.

うちの近くまで来て、近所のペキニーズのユキヤ君に会えました。上品な室内犬なので、自らの足で歩くのを好みません。自分のコートと同じくらいモフモフの防寒着が、いかにもお上品なワンコの雰囲気を出しています。

Near our home, we met Yukiya, our neighbour's Pekinese.  He is a perfect indoor dog who does not like walking outside on his own feet.  He looks superior with a blue coat that is as fluffy as his own fur.

公園で At the park

 今朝は久しぶりに公園のドッグランの横を通りました。

We walked passing the side of the dog park, which we do not visit these days.

ランの利用には毎年登録を更新しなければならないのですが、タイガはもう数年前から中に入りたがらないので無登録です。なので中を覗くだけですが、今朝は見たことないワンコがいました。シルケン・ウィンドハウンド(Silken Windhound) という犬種で、米国でボルゾイとウィペットの交配で作られたそうです。飼い主さんによると、日本には犬舎が２軒あるだけだそうです。この写真を見ると大きなウィペットが走っているかのようですが、立ち止まると毛足が長いので雰囲気がガラリと変わります。

To use the dog park, you have to renew the registration every year.  As Taiga got older, she became unwilling to go into the dog park, so I have not renewed the permit for several years.  This morning, I saw an unusual looking dog over the fence and started talking to the owner inside.  She told me that it was a Silken Windhound, developed in the US.  There are only two breeders in Japan, and she got her dog from one of them.  Looking at him in this photo below, he looks like a large Whippet but, when he stands still, he looks very different with his long coat.

飼い主さんが呼び戻してくれました。名前は女性名詞で「アビー」ですが、実は男の子で生後９か月だそうです。

His owner called him back.  He is a 9 months old boy, but with a name of Abbie.

コマンドがはいってお座り。

次はお手。タイガは「お手」が嫌いで茶化そうとしますが、この子は素直に従いました。

followed by 'paw'.  Taiga hates 'paw' and tries to make a joke of it, but this boy was very obedient.

ランの近くで会った初対面の子たち。小さな、小さな甲斐犬と、これまた小柄なゴールデンです。

Near the dog park, we met new faces who were on their way to the dog park.  A tiny Kai - in fact, the smallest I have ever seen, and also a small Golden Retriever.

タイガとの比較でこう。１歳の女の子で名前は「ヒジキ」ちゃん。ペットショップから迎えたそうです。

this is how she stands in front of Taiga.  She is one year old, named Hijiki, and she came from a pet shop.  ('Hijiki' is a kind of black seaweed, with which we make a homely dish.)

怖いもの知らずで、ズカズカとタイガの臭い嗅ぎもしました。
Hijiki is fearless and went straight to Taiga's backside to take a sniff.

人にもとてもフレンドリーで最高にカワイイ子です。

She is so friendly with strangers, too.  

一緒に飼われているゴールデンの子は、１歳半で体重が28kgと小柄。名前は「アツアゲ」ちゃん。ふたりとも生活感あふれる名前です。

The Golden Retriever is 1 1/2 years old, weighing 28kg, with a name Atsuage.  ('Atsuage' is a deep-fried tofu, another homely dish.)

帰りは陸上競技場下の道を通って、日光で少しでも暖をとりながら歩きました。

Going home, we took the path that looks over the field across the river, trying to get warmth from the sun.

冬至を過ぎたので、今日から日が長くなると思うとホッとします。

After the winter solstice, I can look forward to the daytime getting longer from now on.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

公園へ向かう道で、久しぶりにトイプードルのモモちゃんに会えました。最近トリミングにいってきたばかりで、毛足が短くなって寒そうです。

On our way to the park, we met Momo, a female Toy Poodle in our neighbourhood.  We had not seen her for some time.  She had her trimming a few days ago, and now her coat is short and does not look ready for this cold weather.

でも、フード付きの温かそうな服を着ていて、そのフードにはモモちゃんの毛色と同じ色のポンポンがついていました。

However, she is wearing a warm jacket with a hood.  The hood has a pom-pom of the same colour as her own fur.

ペットの服はデザインが本当に細やか。襟元の花の一個一個にパールのようなものを縫い付ける作業を誰かがしたのかと思うと....   良くできた服です。

I am always impressed to see how well made these tiny jackets are.  To think that someone sewed the little flowers around the neck and attached the pearls on them.... I wouldn't have the patience, nor the imagination to design it.

全く声を出さないけど大興奮で私の膝にしがみついてきます。

Momo never utters a sound however excited she is, as she clings to my knee.

フードをかぶせた状態で写真を撮りたくても興奮して飛び回るので、無理やり押さえつけてパチリ。

It was impossible to take a picture of her with the hood on, so I held her head to steady her.

公園からの帰り道に、以前よく歩いた屋敷林に寄ってみました。モミジがちょうど紅葉しています。

On our way home from the park, we passed by the privately owned woodland that is open to the public, since the Japanese maple trees were still looking pretty.

なぜ今はめったに来ないかというと、この↓建物が原因です。かつては古い農家の母屋や蔵とそれを取り囲むように孟宗竹の林があったのですが、相続が起きたあと屋敷林の一部と共に売却されて、今はマンションが建っています。残った屋敷林は引き続き一般に提供されていますが、規模の大幅縮小と形状の極端な変化とで、すっかり雰囲気が変わってしまいました。

We rarely come here these days, and the reason is this↓- a new block of flats.  There used to be an old farmhouse surrounded by bamboo woods.  After the owner passed away, the house, bamboo woods, and a part of the woodland open to the public were sold to a developer.  We can still use the remainder of the woodland, but the scale is much reduced, as well as the quiet atmosphere having been altered forever.

残った竹林は、工事のあとも整備されずに放置状態。

The leftover of the bamboo forest is now in a sorry state.

散歩など Walk etc

 最近の寒さと晴天でドウダンツツジが紅葉しています。今朝の散歩で通った道の花壇のは特に鮮やかでした。

Thanks to the cold air and sunny days, leaves of the Enkianthus perulatus (doudan azalea) have turned bright red.  This bush we saw during our morning walk was particularly eye-catching.

タイガは今朝も隣の6丁目を目指しました。坂道を登ったり下りたりで、私は脚が鍛えられるし、民家の植物を観察できるので退屈しないので歓迎です。

Taiga chose to walk in the neighbouring district this morning.  We have a lot of slopes in this area, and my legs get plenty of exercise.  Also, I never get bored looking at plants in people's gardens.

去年の今頃もこの垣根の写真を撮った記憶があります。

I remember taking a photo of this bush around this time last year - this bush is a part of the hedge running along the front of this house.

更に歩いて、丘の上にそびえる孤高のケヤキの木は、葉っぱが落ちたあとカラスの巣らしきものが見えるようになっていました。

Further on, on top of a hill, there is a solitary Japanese zelkova tree.  With the leaves gone, I could see a few crows' nests.

午後に、ずっと気になっていた作業を思い切って行いました。今年の１月23日に届いた種無し柚子「多田錦」の苗が全く育たずに、棒苗のままなのです。しかも、頂上から枯れ始めて、一度その枯れた部分を取り除いたのに、また同じような状態に戻りました。これ↓は今日の状態。

In the afternoon, I decided to do something I had procrastinated for some time - i.e., check what was happening to the seedless yuzu plant that I bought in January this year.  Since it was delivered to me on January 23rd, no branches have come out.  Moreover, the top 5cm of the tree went dead, which I removed in spring, but it is back to the same situation, as can be seen here.

これ↓が配達時の苗の様子。頂上の緑色の部分が春までには枯れたので、切除して切り口をふさいでおきました。その後、更に下数センチが枯れてしまった。

This is how the plant looked like when it arrived.  The green part at the top went dead by spring, so I cut it off, and now another 5 cm or so has gone dead.

鉢から出してみると

I took it out of the pot.

届いたときの根っこのままで、ヒゲ根が全くない。

This looks exactly as it was in January - i.e., no fine root.

あー、もう諦め状態。新しい土を使って、排水性を良くするために以前の10号鉢から今度は7号鉢へとダウンサイズ。最後に上の枯れた部分は切除しました。

It seems hopeless.  However, I made new soil mixture and, in order to ensure good drainage, I used a smaller pot, by downsizing from 30cm diameter to now 21cm diameter.  I also cut off the dead part at the top.
