朝散歩など Morning walk etc

 今朝は５月らしい清々しい朝でした。公園事務所前の広場では、ささやかな鯉のぼりが微風になびいていました。ほんとに、ささやか。

A beautiful morning for the first day of the Golden Week holidays.  In front of the park management office, they had a line of carp kites that symbolise people's wish that children will grow healthy and strong.

いつも通る広場のアオギリ（写真のど真ん中）。

My favourite tree in the park - in Japanese, it is called Aogiri meaning green paulownia tree.  It is not a real paulownia but the leaves and the way it grows resemble it.

葉っぱが出始めたばかりなので名前の「桐」には未だ見えませんが、堂々とした姿が好きです。

When the leaves are fully spread out, the tree will look magnificent.

離れたところからでも幹や枝が青っぽく見える理由は、これ。写真は幹の樹皮ですが、苔ではなく本当に緑色だからです。

公園横の家では黄バラが満開でした。毎年の開花を楽しみにしています。

近所のJAを覗いてみました。連休初日なので珍しく人出が多い。

I looked into the JA near my home.  There were more people than usual thanks to the holidays.

珍しいものを見つけました。八重咲きピンクの宿根性カスミソウです。真っ白の八重咲きならよく見かけますが、ピンクは珍しい。

I saw a shelf of gypsophila plants with double pink petals.  You can easily find white ones but the pink variety with double petals is very rare in Japan.

ということで、一鉢持ち帰り。ついでに夏の定番ハーブ、イタリアンパセリも。

So, I brought home one of them, together with a pot of Italian parsley for the summer.

育て方を調べてみたら、宿根カスミソウはアルカリ性の土を好むそうなので、苦土石灰を混ぜ込んで用土を準備しました。一週間ほど寝かせたあとで10号鉢に植え付ける予定です。

At home, I looked up about how to take care of the flower.  It seems that the plant needs alkaline soil.  I prepared it with magnesium lime, which I will leave to rest for about a week before I plant the flowers.

 雨の合間の散歩に出ようとしたら、ハンザの開花がピークに達していました。うっとりです。香も最高。何度もスーハーしてから散歩に出ました。

It is as if the Japanese rainy season has already started.  We have to catch the window of opportunity when it is not raining.  As we were about to set out, I saw that the first flower of Hanza had opened fully.  Such a fragrance!  I enjoyed it thoroughly before we left for walk.

お昼頃から本降りになり花がクタッとなっていたので、花びらを収穫してお茶にしました。ほんの少しの蜂蜜と一緒に飲むと、バラの香がして美味しいです。

It began to rain heavily by midday and the flower looked crestfallen.  So, I picked the petals and made a cup of tea with a drop of honey.

じっとガマンで合図を待っていたタイガが、ダンプカーの勢いで出てきました。

Taiga had been stoically waiting for me to call her out, and out she came like a speeding heavy lorry.

＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝

去年の春に買ったばかりのリンゴ苗２品種。今年は可能なら１個ずつ生らせてみたいです。

これ↓は果肉が赤い「紅の夢」。片親が紅玉なのでその花粉は使わずに、梵天を持って公園へ行きアルプス乙女の花粉を採取してきました。調べたら、アルプスは授粉樹としてほぼどんな園芸種のリンゴにも使えるようです。

I bought two apple varieties in spring last year and, if possible, I would like to grow one fruit on each this year.  This is the red-fleshed apple called 'Kurenai-no-yume'.  I pollinated it with the crab apple flowers growing in the park.  This variety's seed parent is Kogyoku, so I did not use my Kogyoku although it was in bloom at the same time.  In contrast, the crab apple variety in the park called 'Alps Otome' is said to be effective with any garden cultivars.

こちら↓は、紅の夢より一足先に咲き終わっていたグラニースミス。海外サイトによると自家結実性があるとのことでしたが、紅玉の花粉もつけておきました。

This one is Granny Smith which was the first to flower.  For this, I used the pollen from my Kogyoku.

地植えの大実ユズにはミネオラとモロが高接ぎされています。このうちミネオラが一番開花旺盛で、今年はこれしか蕾が出ていないほどです。

On the small Yuzu tree near the porch, I have grafted Mineora and Moro.  Only Mineora has abundance of flowers this year.

玄関のドアを開けると何とも良い香り。

The scent hits me when I open the front door.  It is like in heaven.

道側に植えてあるリスボンレモンの開花も始まりました。（屋内越冬した鉢植えリスボンには幼果が育っています。）

The Lisbon Lemon growing by the side of the road has started to bloom, too.  (The Lisbon Lemon in a pot that spent the winter indoors now has young fruits.)

去年は６個生りました。今年は去年より花着きが良いので、もしかしたらもう少し生るかも。

This tree produced 6 fruits last year.  Since I see a lot more flowers this year, we might get a few more.

ブラックベリー開花 Blackberries flowering

 公園はすっかり新緑の季節です。

The fresh leaves of deciduous trees in the park are at their most beautiful this time of the year.

葉っぱが赤いノムラモミジとコナラの緑とのコントラストが綺麗です。

The Japanese maple tree with red leaves against the background of green trees makes a nice contrast.

うちではブラックベリーのナバホが咲き始めました。年々株が太ってきて、今では根元近くの太さが私の手首くらいあります。もう立派な「木」のようです。ただし管理は２年草の扱いで、去年の夏に出てきた今ある地上部は、夏に収穫が終わり次第根元で切ってしまいます。その頃には既に来年用の太いシュートが出ているので、最も勢いのある２本だけ残して、後続のシュートはその都度除去しています。

My blackberry, Navaho from the US, has started to bloom.  The plant's roots are now so established that the shoots that come out every summer are getting larger every year.  So, I keep just 2 shoots for the following year, and remove any following shoots during the rest of the summer.  By the time I harvest all the berries, new shoots for the next year will have come out and I cut down the old ones from last year, on which berries had been growing.

花びらは基本的に５枚のようですが、中には二重のような咲き方もあります。

Some of the flowers have many petals, instead of the usual 5.

花の色は普通は白ですが、咲き始めはピンクのもあります。

And, some of them are pink instead of white.

カップ状のを横から見るとカワイイ野ばらのよう。

A cup shaped pink flower looks like a pretty wild rose.

私の大、大好きなハンザも咲き始めました。ハンザは全部で３本ありますが、これは一番最後に取り寄せた株で、鉢植えで管理。他の２本はナバホの両側、下のほうで何とか生きています。

My favourite Hanza has started to flower.  I love this variety best of all, even though I admit that there are countless rose varieties in this world with more beautiful looking flowers.  I have two more of this Hanza, growing on either side of the Navaho blackberry.

ハンザの花の形は、幼いうちは同一の株でも不安定で季節や気温によってバラバラです。でも、どんなにブサイクな咲き方でも、この品種が最高。

This plant is still young, so the shape of the flower can vary depending on the time of the year or the temperature at the time of opening.  Whatever shape it takes, I love this variety best.

暑い朝 Mornings getting warm

 今朝は早朝から暑いのなんの。家では退屈なタイガでさえ、今朝は地元3丁目内の散歩で満足していました。ただし、３丁目も丘陵地なので丘を登ったり下りたりと、脚を鍛えられます。

It was a warm day even in the early morning hours.  Although Taiga is always eager to go out, she was content with walking within our local district.  However, with our district also sitting on a very hilly terrain, you have to walk up and down a lot of slopes.

数日前に通ったナニワノイバラのツルが見事な家。今朝は満開でした。

The house we saw several days ago, with the Cherokee rose.  It was now in full bloom.

花が散り始めると掃除が大変そうです。

The owner of the house will be busy as the flowers start to fall.  (In Japan, we clean up the street in front of the house ourselves, instead of relying on the local government.)

こちらはシランの花壇がある家。10年くらい前に苗が植えられたときは隙間だらけで淋しい状態でしたが、着実に増えて今ちょうど良い感じです。花色は３種類植わっていて、

 Bletilla striata Reichb. fil.

白の素芯と

white flowers,

淡いピンク

pale pink,

そして定番の紫色です。この紫色のも含め、どの色の苗も普通のシランよりも小ぶりです。

and the commonest variety with purple flowers.

朝散歩 Morning walk

 夜のうちに雨が降ったあとだったので、今朝は蒸し暑い散歩になりました。四中横の草地では雨後の雑草が伸び伸びになっていましたが、私の好きなタンポポとシロツメクサの花でいっぱいなので景色を楽しめました。散歩に出ようとしたら、うちの近所のゴロウがちょうど通りがかったので一緒に来ました。ゴロウは16歳、タイガはもうすぐ11歳なので、何をするにもゆっくりです。

It rained during the night and it was very humid by the time we went out for a walk.  As we were leaving for the park, my neighbour and her dog, Goro, came along and we left together.  The grass in the park is growing fast due to the recent rains.  However, I love looking at the field covered with dandelions and white clover flowers.  Goro is 16 years old, and Taiga soon to be 11.  They relax and enjoy as they want.

タイガの大好きなタービュレンのルイ君がやって来ました。ルイ君はタイガより1歳下なので10歳。みんな歳をとりました。

There came Louis, Taiga's favourite.  He is a 10-year old Tervuren.  So, we are all getting old.

うちの斜め向かいの公園では、数年前に植えた一重咲き赤花サンザシのクリムゾン・クラウドが満開です。

In the small park opposite to my house, Crimson Cloud hawthorn is in full bloom.  I planted it several years ago.

鉢植えで育てていましたが、制御できないくらいに育ったので花壇に植えたものです。満開になると数メートル離れたところでは甘い良い香りですが、鼻を近づけると臭いが変わります。毎年、晩秋になると区の人がやってきて徹底的に切り詰めるので、いい感じに低木のままキープされています。それでも花はたくさん咲く。

I used to love this tree but it outgrew the pot.  The flowers smell nice and sweet from several meters away but the scent changes if you get too close.  The tree has stayed small thanks to the maintenance people sent by the Ward Office every autumn, who trim it down to a small bush.  It still produces lots of flowers.

帰宅しても中に入りたがらないタイガ。今はまだ蚊のいない時期なので、玄関の戸を開けたままにしておきます。暑すぎると冷たい玄関のタイルの上で涼しんだり水を飲んだりしています。それ以外は玄関前の座布団に座って、道行く人たちを眺めています。

Arriving home, Taiga prefers to stay outside.  With no mosquitoes out there yet, I leave the front door ajar.  If it gets too warm outside, she comes into the porch and lies down on the cold tiles.  Otherwise, she sits on the cushion in front of the porch and watches the world go by.
