公園で At the park

 今日は今シーズン一番の冷えだそうで、公園に向かう途中手がかじかんでいました。窪地へ上る階段の手前にいたら、川沿いの道を行くヒナ・セナの姿がかすかに見えました。

It was the coldest morning this season.  My hands were freezing as we headed for the park.  Just before going up the stairs, I thought I saw Hina and Sena passing the road in front of the woods.

道に出てみると、確かにヒナ・セナです。タイガに引っ張られてこの坂を一気登り。

Coming out of the woods, yes, I could see them clearly.  Taiga got excited and I had to run all the way up this steep road (I am not used to shouting loud enough to be heard).

古代家の林の向こうへ行ったので、どうやらいつもの場所へ向かっているようです。その場所と古代家の林の間には車が通る道があるので、タイガを捕まえて更に走り。

When we reached the top, I saw them heading towards the usual spot.  Since there is a public road between that place and this wooded area, I had to catch Taiga and run more with her.

やっと追いつけました。

通路の向こうにタイガが移動したので、ヒナが追いかけようとしています。

Taiga moved to the other side of the passage and Hina was eyeing her.

何と、通路を軽く飛び越えてしまいました。まるで岩場を飛び交う甲斐犬のような光景でした。体が重いタイガには到底できない軽業です。

Suddenly, Hina jumped across the passage, just like a Kaiken running over rocky slopes chasing the prey.  I have never seen Taiga performing this kind of feat - she is too heavy.

ここで遊ばせると皆生き生きします。

金網の向こうの野球場から飛んできたのか、野球ボールが転がっていたので試しにヒナに見せたら喜んで加えて走り回っていました。時折私の足元にボールを置いて行くので、初めて甲斐犬と「持ってこい」の遊びができました。

Beyond the wire fence lies a baseball field and I found a ball.  I gave it to Hina who was getting all excited.  She even dropped the ball at my feet as if to say "throw it for me".  Even as a puppy, Taiga was never interested in fetching, always preferring to play with pieces of branches and wanting me to chase her for it.

タイガはウッドチップの山の周りを一人で駆け巡っています。自分より体力のある若い子たちとひととおりじゃれると、よく一人ではぐれ行動をとるようになりました。

Taiga's favourite woodchip mound.  When she is with younger individuals, Taiga knows that her strength falls short and tends to play alone after the initial greeting.

こちらは体力が有り余っている二人。

These two have inexhaustible energy.

こういう光景を見ていると、年の近い者同士を飼うのも良いアイディアだなと思います。仲良くできれば一日中、遊び相手がいる。

When I watch these two playing together, I feel that Taiga might have been happier if she had a sister or brother of a similar age.  

帰宅してハミガキ・オヤツの後は爆睡していました。この青系のホットカーペットカバーはもう一か月ほど使っていますが、タイガの足の裏でだいぶ汚れてきました。以前はタイガがオシッコを漏らすたびに洗濯して替えのカバーを出していました。今は一日５回の散歩の効果で全然漏れがないので、カバーは汚れるまで同じものを敷いたままです。

After coming home, we had a toothbrushing session followed by a treat.  Taiga then fell asleep in front of the TV.  This electric carpet cover has lasted for about a month without requiring a wash, thanks to the 5-times-a-day walk regime.  So, I conclude that she is not exactly incontinent.  In her old age, the bladder wall has become less flexible and she has to urinate more often.  This happens with humans, too - I had it for several years when I was going through my menopause.  In my case, the problem disappeared afterwards but, with Taiga, I am prepared if it lasts for the rest of her life.

公園で At the park

 今日は一日中どんよりと曇った日。しかも早朝散歩の時間には木枯らしのような強風で寒かったです。午後３時半頃に城北中央公園へ行きましたが、寒さのせいか週末にしては人気が少なかったです。

We had a wintry gale this morning and I kept shivering as we had our morning walk.  

In the afternoon, we headed for the Johoku Central Park.  Probably due to the chilly weather, there were not many people considering it was Saturday.

古代家へ続く道。タイガは左側の土手の上を歩くとオヤツが期待できる習慣になっていますが、今日は先客がいたので方向を変えて、ドッグランを覗いてみることにしました。ドッグランでは世代交代が進んでいて、タイガの顔見知りはほとんど来なくなったので入場に必要な登録をしていません。なので、いつも通りすぎるだけ。

Taiga's favourite path - by walking over the ledge on the left side of the path, Taiga can expect to get a treat.  However, there were people already sitting at the end of it, so we changed our course and headed for the dog park.

ランを覗くと珍しい子がいました。スキッパーキです。スキッパーキは、世界的にも希少品種ですが、日本では更に見かけません。ワンコを飼うにあたり、いろんな犬種について調べていた頃、スキッパーキにも非常に関心があったのですが、ブリーダーさん自体あまりいませんでした。これまで見たことのあるスキッパーキは女の子２頭で、飼い主さんたちの話では、１頭の牝が出産する頻度は低いし、一度に生まれる頭数も少ないということでした。よって、私の中では幻の犬。

At 10 years old, Taiga no longer wants to go inside the dog park and we only pass by it, looking inside over the wire fence.  We saw a very rare dog - a Schipperke.  I have seen only two female Schipperke in my life.　

様子を見ていると、幼いアイリッシュセッターの子と大の仲良しのようでワンプロに夢中。

As I watched from afar, he seemed absorbed in doggie wrestling with an Irish Setter puppy.

金網の外にいる私のために飼い主さんが呼んでくださいました。ジャック君、１歳半だそうです。風貌は黒一枚の甲斐犬を小さくしたような感じ。

As I was standing outside of the wire fence, his owner called him towards us.  He is one and a half years old, named Jack, weighing 7kg.  He looks like a tiny Kaiken without any brindles.

スキッパーキは朗らかな性格。身軽でピョンピョン飛び跳ねたりして走る姿がカワイイです。

He has such a happy and sweet temper, typical of this breed.  

遊びの途中だったので、友達のアイリッシュセッターが連れ戻しにやってきました。見事な赤いコートです。成長するとキラキラ光るロンゲになります。

As he was called away in the middle of a wrestling, his friend came to reclaim him.

ラン近くの花壇では清楚なシュウメイギクがまだ咲いていました。

秋の午後はすぐに暗くなるので、明るいうちに帰ることにしました。

It was already getting darkish and we decided to head home before dusk.

帰宅途中、最近頻繁に出くわすようになった柴犬の子に会えました。生後５か月の女の子で、名前はポポちゃん。当初はタイガの姿を見て後ずさりをしていましたが、何度もすれ違ううちにすっかり慣れて、今では遠くからタイガを見つけて跳ねるように走ってきます。

On our way home, we ran into a Shiba Inu puppy.  She is 5 months old, named Popo.  When we first met, she was too scared of Taiga but as we have run into each other quite often, she is now completely used to her.  The moment she spots Taiga from a distance, she comes almost hopping.

今朝の散歩のあと地元JAを覗いたら、新たに入荷していた食用菊を見てしまいました。

I found a newly arrived edible chrysanthemum plant when I went to the local JA after morning walk.

今度の苗は花が若干くすんだ色でジミっぽいですが花柄の大きさは似ているので、たぶん濃い色の「もってのほか」に属すると思います。保険苗のつもりで買ってみました。

The colour of these flowers seems a little dull compared with the brilliant colour of the plant I bought recently.  However, I like this one, too, anyway.

黄花の「松風」を生の花のままで蜂蜜と一緒にお茶にしてみました。ほんのり菊の花の香がして美味しかったです。精神安定効果があるそうです。

I made a cup of tea with the yellow edible chrysanthemum, together with a little honey.  Among other benefits, it is said to calm one's nerves.

柑橘試し採り Citrus fruit tasting

 今朝は曇り空にヒンヤリした空気。公園のイチョウの木が少しずつ黄葉してきました。

It was cloudy with chilly air this morning.  The ginkgo trees in the park were starting to turn yellow.

ドッグラン近くの林を歩きましたが、人気がなく誰にも会わずに終わりました。

We walked through the woods without seeing anyone.

帰宅してフィンガーライムの様子を見ました。トゲが激しいので「もうリストラする！」と思って、数日前に隅っこから引っ張り出して来たら、何と実がついていました。今年は本当に邪魔者扱いして完全な日陰状態だったにも拘わらず律儀に実をくれたので今、心が揺らいでいるところ。この苗はヤフオクで「赤実」苗として売られていた実生ものですが、他のちゃんとした品種のものは全然収穫なしなのに、健気に頑張っています。もう一年、育ててから考えます。

After coming home, I checked the fruits of the finger lime plant.  The thorns are so painful and I have half a mind to get rid of all the 4 plants I still have.  This one was cheep as a  seedling, with a catalogue saying "red fruits".  The other 3 plants with known variety names have never produced, even though they were expensive to buy.  Seeing this seedling plant producing fruits every year, I am hesitating now.

小粒ながらも甘くて美味しい「石地フリー」ミカンが色づいてきました。

フィンガーライムのほうは完熟だったようで、半割にしてしばらくたつと細胞が湧き出してきました。これは「白実」というよりはもう立派な「グリーン」として育ててよいかも。

The finger lime must have been fully ripe, since the inside started to ooze out after I cut it in half.  Although the flesh is not "red" as promised, this green flesh is not too bad.

ミカンのほうは糖度が23.7度。実際に食べてみると確かに甘いです。でも、昔一度だけ食べた市販の「甘平」が今まで食べたミカンの中で最も甘かったような記憶です。よほど希少品種なのか、地元スーパーでは見かけなくなりました。

The Ishiji is very sweet with sugar content of 23.7%.  With no stones, this variety is really worth growing.

食用菊を乾燥させて菊花茶を楽しもうと、昨夜のうちに摘んでネットに入れておきました。生憎、今日は午前10頃から冷たい雨。なので室内で吊るしています。菊花茶にはビタミンB1やEなどが含まれているそうです。いろんな効能があるので薬膳料理にも使えるそうです。私は冬の間、お茶にして楽しもうと思います。

I picked some of the edible chrysanthemums last night.  After rinsing the flowers several times, I placed them in the net, thinking that the dry spell we have been having would be very effective.  However, it started to rain this morning - such is life.  The purpose of this exercise is to dry the flowers so that they can be used for tea and in medicinal cooking.  The flowers are rich in vitamin B1, E, etc, and have medicinal uses.

昨夜、丁寧に３回すすいでからネットの中に並べました。全然、乾燥していない。フードドライヤーは持っていますが、熱で花びらが変色したらイヤなので、自然乾燥でいきます。ちなみに、ポテトチップ用のスライスをフードドライヤーで乾燥させようとしたら、茶色になってしまいました。

This net is very useful in drying delicate foodstuffs such as potato slices for frying.  I do have an electric food dryer, but I am afraid the flowers may get discoloured, just as the potato slices turned brown.

食用菊 Edible chrysanthemums

今日も良い天気。タイガは朝散歩から帰ってリビングでウトウト。ガラス戸ごしの日の光がちょうど良い暖かさのようです。

 Another fine day for a walk in the park.  After returning home, Taiga enjoyed a snooze in the living room.  The sun coming through the glass door was just pleasant for her.

名前を呼ぶと面倒くさそうに目を開けました。道を歩いていて親子連れとすれ違う際に、幼い子が「オオカミみたい」と言うのをよく耳にしますが、いつもは心の中で「どこが？」と思っています。でも、こうゆうふうに光が当たるとほんの少し狼っぽく見える。

When I called her name, she opened her eyes slightly and looked up.  Small children often say to their moms that "that dog looks like a wolf".  I normally disagree but, when I look at her in this light, I see what they mean.

ピンクの食用菊が美しさのピークを過ぎようとしています。朝の水やりをした直後なので実際よりもパリっと写っている。左の地植えが普及タイプの「もってのほか」、右側が色の濃いバージョン。

The edible chrysanthemums are in season - the pink flower varieties are almost past their peak, whereas the yellow varieties are just starting to open.  The pink flowers on the left is the common version that I have grown for several yeas, where as the one in the pot is the variety I bought recently.  They are called by the same name.

違いが分かり易いように、鉢を寄せてみました。

普通タイプのはいつもの年とは違い色が濃いですが、それでも鉢植えのには及びません。そして、鉢植えの花びらは、裏よりも内側がより濃い色なので、一個の花全体の濃淡が美しい。さらに、鉢植えの方は花柄が大きくて、完全に開くと中輪といってよいほどの大きさです。いずれも「もってのほか」の特徴である、花びらが細いストロー状です。この鉢植えの苗に出会えたのは本当にラッキーでした。このまま10号鉢のフカフカの土で冬芽を出させたいです。

The common type is usually very pale, almost white, but this year, the colour is unusually pink, which delights me.  However, the new one's colour on the right is even deeper - the colour of the petal on the inside is deeper than the outside, making the whole flower looking very beautiful.  Moreover, the size of the flower is much larger than the common type.  I feel very lucky to have found this version at last.

黄花食用菊のほうも咲き始めました。後ろにあるのは数年前から育てている「松風」。手前の楕円の中のは今年の春に取り寄せた「かなわ」。

The yellow flour types.  The variety circled is the new one I got earlier this year, after searching on the internet without knowing the name but only by the appearance.  The dominant one has been in my garden for several years now.

松風は花柄が大きなものは中輪サイズになります。

This is a very tough variety and easy to look after.

かなわは松風よりも遅咲きのようです。まだまだ蕾がほとんど。こちらは松風よりも花柄が大きくなるのと、色が濃い黄色になります。今のところ、あまり丈夫な品種ではなさそうな印象。初夏に挿し芽で苗を作ろうとしましたが、発根したものを直接地面に植えたら全滅しました。しかも、２株買った親株のうち、生き延びたのはこの一株だけ。

This new variety is a late flowering one with most of the buds still small.  The flowers of this variety is larger than the other one and the size of the flower is much larger with a showy appearance.  Unfortunately, this variety is not very strong and, of the two young plants I bought, one did not survive the summer.
