雨の合間 Between the rains

 今日は雨の合間を狙ってタイガの散歩に出る一日でした。早朝散歩で発見した近所の庭木。空模様を気にしながら上を見て歩いていたら、こんな近くにマルメロの木があることを知りました。

It was a day of going out for a walk in between rain.  During our morning walk, I made a new discovery.  As I was walking looking up the sky, I noticed a European quince tree in a garden near my house.

大木のわりには疎らな実つきですが、カタログでしか見たことの無い実を見て一人でワクワクしてしまいました。ここは高い塀に囲まれた広い敷地に大きな家が２軒立っていて、古い庭木で鬱蒼としているので、今まで特に気にして眺めたことはありませんでした。

For a large tree, there were not many fruits growing, but I was excited to see the fruits in the flesh since I had seen them only in catalogue photos.  The tree stands in a large garden with high walls, where there are two large houses and many old trees.  So, I had never paid much attention before.

城北公園のカリンは未だ色づき始めてもいませんが、この木のはアンズ色です。収穫時期についてググってみたら10月上旬からだそうです。もっと眺めていたかったけど、雨が降って来たので急いで帰りました。

The Asian quince fruits in the Johoku Park are still green, but the fruits on this tree are already apricot coloured.  On returning home, I googled and found that they start ripening in early October.  I wished I could spend more time looking at them, but it started to rain again and we hurried home.

My roselle plant is thriving in the warm rain, growing taller every day.

今朝は全部で４輪咲いていました。

This morning, I saw 4 flowers opening.

中心の茎では、ピンクの丸に囲まれた開花済みのガクが赤くなり始めています。開花直後のガクと開花直前の蕾はほとんど同じに見えるのですが、大きさは開花後のガクのほうが若干大きいです。

On the central stem, the calyces of flowers a few days ago are becoming red.  Calyces right after flowering and flower buds the day before opening look very similar.  However, the former are slightly larger than the latter.

タイガは退屈しきって、一日じゅう玄関でふて寝していました。夕方散歩の時間には雨が止んでいたのでラッキーでした。

Taiga was bored and sulked on the tiles most of the day.  Luckily, the rain stopped when it was time to leave for our evening walk.

Youtubeで健康によい食品などの海外動画をよく見ていますが、今日はターメリックの1kg入りを注文してしまいました。通販の支払いは、いつものとおりコンビニで現金決済です。今年の７月にカードの不正使用があったとき、カード会社が本当に私の利用なのか問い合わせメールを送ってくれたのは、私が買い物などにカードを利用していない行動が知れていたからだと思っています。なので、今後も通販の決済は現金です。

I like watching overseas videos about foods that are good for health, and today I ordered a kilo of turmeric powder.  As always, I made the payment with cash at the convenience store.  In July this year there were false spending, and my card issuing company contacted me to ascertain, since they were so unusual based on my spending pattern.  After that experience, I am even more set on cash settlements for internet shopping.

Taiga is always happy to wait for me while I am inside, since she can expect a reward afterwards.

公園に着くと、いつまた降り出すか分からない空模様。地上は雑草の大海原のようです。

When we arrived at the Johoku Park, the sky was threatening, and the ground was a sea of overgrown grass.

ベンチがボウボウの草に埋もれています。

The benches were drowning in the grass.

公園にくる途中にある家のクレオ君に会えました。元は野犬の群れにいたところを保護された子です。現在の飼い主さん一家に迎えられて数年たっていますが、今でも外に出るのが怖くて、こうやって常に警備員モードで散歩です。

We met Cleo, who lives in the house on our way to the Johoku Park.  He was rescued as a puppy living among a pack of stray dogs.  He was adopted by the current owners several years ago, but he remains skittish.  He is so scared of being outside his home that he behaves like a guard dog on duty all the time.

うちのすぐ近くまで帰ってくると、もう６時でした。空模様が更に怪しくなって、家に入った直後には降り出しました。

When we came close to home, it was already 6 p.m.   The sky was getting dark with fast-moving clouds and shortly after we got inside, it started to rain.

秋の風物詩 Another sign of autumn

 城北中央公園のイチョウの実が落果し始めています。ただし、いまの時期の落果は完熟前の生理落果であって、中身は美味しくないと思います（私はイチョウに関心がないので試したことはなくて、単なる想像）。

The ginkgo trees in the Johoku Central Park have started shedding some of its fruits.  However, this is just releasing excess fruits shortly before the ripening season.  So, the nuts inside are probably not formed even (I have never tried, because I do not eat gingko nuts).

完熟でないので、果肉はまだ臭くないです。

Since the nuts are not ripe yet, the flesh on the outside does not emit the offensive smell.

このイチョウ並木が黄葉すると綺麗です。その頃の気候は暑くも寒くもなく、空気が乾燥しているので散歩が快適です。

When the leaves of these ginkgo trees turn yellow in late autumn, this avenue will be beautiful.  At that time, the air will be neither cold nor hot with low humidity, and walking will be so much more enjoyable.

帰るまえの休憩。タイガは頭の中がオヤツで一杯なので、泡ふいて期待しています。

Having a rest before going home.  There is only one thing occupying Taiga's mind and she is frothing at the mouth.

以前、自作の盆栽鉢に植えた実生のノムラモミジを植え替えることにしました。鉢を作った「粘土」の素材は乾燥したあとも硬いマシュマロのように弾力性があり、さらに、猛暑のあいだ鉢の足が熱で溶けたようにタイルにくっついていました。そこで、まともな鉢を再度探し始めたのです。

A few months ago, I made a shallow pot for the red-leaf maple tree seedlings.  I was not quite happy with it, so I wanted to repot the plants.  The material was not natural clay and even now, with the pot completely dry, it is soft like marshmallow.  Moreover, during the heat wave, the legs at the bottom became glued to the tiles in the sun.  It made me look for a proper pot even more eagerly than before.

本当は昔ながらの青いうわぐすりを塗って焼いた鉢を探していたのですが、やっと見つけたのがこのテラコッタ鉢。縁が鉢の内側へ向けて折れ曲がっているので、いつか大きくなった苗を取り出すとき、鉢を壊さなければならないかもしれません。

I wanted a traditional bonsai pot baked with blue paint on the outside, but no such luck.  The best I could find was this terracotta pot.  Its rims overhang towards inside, which means I may have to break the pot when the plants become too large, and I want to take them out for replanting in a larger pot.  

この容器の裏には足が着いていなくて、周りが盛り上がっている形状。足はなくても鉢全体が水が染み出しやすそうな材質なので、排水性に関しては問題なさそうです。ダオン鉢と比べて非常に軽くてデリケートで、テラコッタ独特の臭いがします。

This pot has no 'legs'.  Instead, the four sides are meant to keep the centre off the ground.  Also, the material may allow excess water to seep out, so there is no problem regarding drainage.  This pot is Western terracotta and, compared with old Japanese clay pots, this one is light, delicate, and has a different smell.

苔も新調。以前のはボサボサに伸びるタイプでしたが、今度のはビロードのように張り付くタイプ。

I got new moss, too.  The previous one had long fibres, whereas this replacement is smooth as velvet.

植え替え完了。「和」の雰囲気ゼロですが、あの樹脂製の器よりはマシでしょう。

Repotting done.  It does not look very 'Japanese', but I think it is an improvement on the previous plastic one.

秋の花など Autumn flowers etc

 朝散歩で四中横の草地に着くと、フヨウの花が咲いていました。

When we arrived at one of the fields of Johoku Park, I saw bushes of Hibiscus mutabilis  with flowers.

フヨウは夏の花というイメージですが、秋のほうが開花の勢いがあるような気がします。以前育てていた八重咲の酔芙蓉は、11月中旬まで延々と咲き続けていました。木がどんどん大きくなり、うちの小さな庭を独占する勢いだったので、残念ながらリストラしました。写真のフヨウは酔芙蓉ではなく、朝からピンク色です。対して酔芙蓉の花は、早朝からお昼近くまでは白、午後からピンクになり、夕方から夜・翌朝には赤色に近い濃い色へと変化したのが魅力でした。とにかくハデハデな花でした。

This plant is associated with summer, but it seems to thrive in our warm autumn weather.  I used to grow a confederate rose tree in my garden, which kept flowering up to mid-November.  The tree grew fast like grass and ended up occupying almost the whole of my tiny front garden.  I loved the flowers but had to get rid of the tree.  Those flowers were white in the morning, turned pink in the early afternoon, and went on to deepen in colour and became almost red in the evening to the following morning.  They were such showy flowers.

この草地のは、夏に一度咲いたあと、まるで雑草刈りのように地際近くまで切られましたが、こうやって秋には復活しています。驚異的な生命力です。

The bushes in this field were cut down to the ground after summer flowering.  However, by autumn, they came back and started flowering again.  What a strong power to survive.

フヨウのとなりでは萩の花も咲き始めています。

Next to the hibiscus bush, there is bush clover - another plant that announces the arrival of autumn.

園芸種ではなく野生の萩のようで、ひっそりと小さな花です。

This is a wild variety that you can find anywhere in the countryside, so the flowers are very modest, like in the world of 'wabi sabi'

草丈は、かなりあります。

The bush is as tall as the hibiscus tree.

天気予報どおり、午後からは空模様が急変して雷雨の嵐。おまけに爆発音のような雷の最中に、小さな地震まで感じられました。そのうち、部屋の中がパッと明るくなるほどの稲妻があったかと思うと、直ぐ近くで爆弾のような音がしたときはびっくりして、2階へ上がってあたりを見渡したほどです。

夕方散歩の頃には雨が止んでいたので庭の様子を確認したら、門の内側に置いてあるミカン「日南の姫」の実が2個落ちていました。ここ２、３日で色づき始めていたのは知っていましたが、雨で落ちたようです。

The weather forecast was accurate, and the sky suddenly turned dark after lunch.  We had a series of explosive lightning and thunder, and we even had a small earthquake in the middle of all that.  Once, the room was lit up by a lightning and simultaneously we had an explosion of noise.  I was convinced that it dropped in our neighbourhood and went upstairs to look around.  Fortunately, no fire or damage reported.

When it was the time for our evening walk, the rain had stopped temporarily, and I checked my plants.  I found that two fruits had fallen on the ground from the early-ripening tangerine plant, Hinano-Hime.

These are the smallest of the fruits, and they started turning yellow a few days ago.

以前は、右側のこの実ともう一個の同じサイズの実が最初に色づくのかと思っていました。

I used to think that the largest two fruits (one of them on the right) were going to ripen first.

残りの実はゆっくり色づきそうなので、これから長く楽しめます。今日落ちた実は、2，3日追熟させてから味見する予定です。

This variety is the earliest ripening tangerine, and I hope they will take time so that I can enjoy looking at the fruits longer.  The two fruits that dropped today will be left to ripen for a few days.

朝散歩など Morning Walk etc

 隣町の江古田へ行く途中にある調剤薬局の建物にはブドウ棚があり、毎年この時期たわわにブドウの房がぶら下がっています。特に世話をしている様子も見受けられないけど豊作です。

There is a dispensing pharmacy between our district and our neighbouring town, which has scaffolding with grape vines.  Around this time every year, the vines are heavy with grapes nearing maturity.  I have never seen anyone taking care of the plant, but every year is a bumper year.

ここは建物が密集している半商業地区の狭い路地で、風通しは悪いし、陽当たりは周りの建物に遮られて更に良くありません。なのに、葉っぱがハダニで銀色になることはありません。

This is a heavily built semi-commercial area with narrow back streets.  Air movement is poor, and direct sun light is limited.  Yet, the leaves never seem to suffer from spider mites but stay healthy.

こんなに丈夫な品種が何なのか分かりませんが、だんだん皮が透き通った感じになってきているので、そろそろ完熟のようです。

Whatever variety this tough plant is, the skin on the fruits is getting translucent, suggesting that the grapes are getting nearly ripe.

うちの近所の庭で見かけたネコ。タイガは顔にネコパンチを食らっても猫好きなので、目が釘付け。

A cat relaxing in my neighbour's garden.  In spite of several punches Taiga has received in the face, she likes cats and was rivetted on the spot.

綺麗な茶トラ猫。上唇の膨らみからすると、オスでしょう。Youtubeで海外の動画を見ていると、メスの茶トラも結構生まれるようですが、日本では稀なはず。

A beautiful ginger cat.  Judging by the full upper lip, it looks like a male.  In fact, almost all the ginger cats in Japan are male, although I have seen quite a few females in YouTube videos from abroad.

うちの斜め向かいにある小さな公園の栗の木には栗が鈴なり。

A lot of sweet chestnuts growing on the tree in the tiny park almost opposite to my house.

園芸品種ではなく柴栗なので実は小さいです。

This is a wild chestnut tree that you can find in mountains in Japan, and the nuts are small but very sweet.

今朝のローゼル。予想どおり２輪が開花。

As expected, two flowers were open this morning on the roselle plant.

昨日 咲いた花のガクは、これから赤く色づくのを見るのが楽しみです。

It will be interesting to watch the calyx from yesterday's flower turning red soon.

先日２度目のリンゴの袋外しをしたばかりですが、もう汚損果が出始めています。ただし汚損が発生するのはいつも赤肉種の「紅の夢」だけで、グラニースミスや紅玉は今までのところ無傷です。

I bagged the apples twice this summer.  Soon after removing the bags for the second time, dark spots began to appear on some of the red-fleshed apples called 'Kurenai-no-Yume'.  Damages are found only on this cultivar and the fruits of Granny Smith and Kogyoku are so far clean.

あぁもう、いいや！と思って最初の実を採りました。キズの中心にまるで的のように色の濃い点があるのは、もしかして虫の侵入あと？と思うと気味悪いですが、とにかく確認です。

Feeling helpless, I picked the first fruit shown above.  The dark centre looking like a target bothered me.  Is there a bug inside?  I had to check what it was.

半割りにしてみると、恐れていたイモムシっぽいものはいませんでした。その代わり、キズの部分がゼリー状。まるで人間の場合、外部からのバイ菌などと戦うために白血球が集合してできる膿を連想させました。

To my relief, I did not see any bug wriggling inside.  Instead, the dark spot was filled with jelly-like substance.  If it were a human body, white blood cells would gang up in order to fight against the intruding bacteria etc, with the result you get a pocket of pus.
