ワイマテの移植 Transplanting Waimate

 ブラックベリーのナバホは今年の収穫のあと撤去しました。その前に、収穫した実は順次、両隣の家と、道の向かいの家に配り、あとは冷凍保存してありました（お向かいさんの両隣は？というと、片方は公園、もう一方は現在空き家状態です）。

冷凍してあった実の約半分を出して、ジャムを作ることにしました。まず、水も何も加えずに実が柔らかくなるまで弱火で煮たら、種を取り除くためにザルと木ベラで、少量ずつ根気よく濾します。写真は種を取り除いた果肉を、綺麗に洗った鍋に戻したところ。この状態でかなり濃くなっています。

I removed the Navaho blackberry plant after this year's harvest.  Prior to that, I distributed Navaho berries, as and when harvested, among my immediate neighbours - left and right, as well as the house opposite (what about left and right of the opposite house?  Well, on the right, there is a park, and on the left, the house is uninhabited currently).  I froze the remaining berries.

Of the frozen berries, I took half out of the freezer to make jam.  I simmered the berries without adding anything, not even water.  When the flesh was soft, I sieved it little by little, using a sieve and a wooden spatula.  It was time-consuming but necessary, in order to make it delectable.  I then washed the pot clean, before putting the sieved berries back (photo below).

砂糖を加えて更に煮ると、ほどなくして木ベラの裏に大きな雫が着くほど濃厚になりました。ブラックベリーって、ナチュラルペクチンが豊富なのかも？念のため、市販のペクチンも少量使って仕上げました。あっけなく完成したので、あわててカラス瓶を熱湯消毒。

The sieved flesh was already very thick and, when I added sugar, it did not take long before I got large dews hanging underneath the wooden spatula.  Are blackberries rich in natural pectin?  To make sure, I added a little store-bought natural pectin to finish.  It was done in such a short time that I had to rush to boil the glass jar.

ドイツ産のガーキンが入っていた大瓶にちょうどの量でした。

The amount was just right for the large jar which used to contain gherkins from Germany.

種が一個も入っていないスムーズなブラックベリージャム。冷めたら冷蔵庫で一晩冷やしてから使います。

Smooth blackberry jam without any pits.  When the jar is lukewarm, I will put it in the fridge and cool it overnight.  

直ぐに味見したいので、別に少量を冷蔵庫で冷やします。ジャムの奥の方の盛り上がりから、粘り具合が伺えます。

In the meantime, I want to taste the finished product.  So, I kept a drop in a plate to cool it quickly in the fridge.  You can see the viscosity from the shine at the deep end.

After uprooting the Navaho plant, I tilled the spot with magnesium lime.  It should have been mixed enough after the recent rainy days.

移植するワイマテはこれ。ツルの先端が門の近くで着地して、2,３年前から自然に発根していたものです。こんな日陰でも実をつけていました。

The Waimate to be transplanted is this one.  A vine touched down and rooted naturally here a few years ago.  Even in this shade, it has been producing fruits.

細根がほぼゼロ！ かなり心配な状態ですが、もし植え付けに失敗したら、他にも候補者が控えています。

I do not see any fine roots!  It is worrying, but if it fails, there are other, smaller candidates.

植え付け完了。左右にバラのハンザが植わっています。ワイマテのツルはナバホほどには密生しないので、今後ハンザも良く育つはずです。

Transplanting is done.  Hanza rose is on either side of Waimate.  Since Waimate does not branch out like Navaho, Hanza roses should fare better in the future.

ナバホの大株を撤去した日に、来年以降用のシュートを掘り上げておきました。

When I got rid of the large Navaho plant, I dug out young shoots for growth next year onwards.

掘り上げたときは細根がほとんど無かったけど、雨のおかげで元気になりました。秋までには根っこが張っているはずなので、冬の前に大鉢に植え替える予定です。

These did not have fine roots, either, when first dug out.  However, after the recent rain, the shoots have recovered well.  They will have grown vigorously by autumn, and I plan to repot these in a larger container then.

ナツメ挿し木苗の植え付け Planting Jujube Cutting

 今朝の散歩中、遠くにコーギの「ひめこ」の姿が見えたので、地面の臭い嗅ぎに夢中だったタイガに教えました。ひめこと飼い主さんたちご一行目がけてタイガが突進していきましたが、タイガの本命はひめパパです。

During our morning walk, I spotted Himeko and her parents in the distance and alerted Taiga who was absorbed in sniffing the ground.  Taiga immediately dashed out towards Himeko's group, but the real object of her interest was Himeko dad.

ひめこに何と言われようと、ひめパパにしか興味がない。タイガが公園デビューした子犬時代、ひめこに厳しく躾けてもらった恩は忘れたようです。

Whatever Himeko says, Taiga does not care.  She seems to have forgotten the fact that Himeko taught her manners when Taiga was a puppy and a new face in the park.

車道は交通の邪魔になるので歩道に誘導されました。その間もタイガは早く撫でてもらいたくて待ちきれない様子。

Having a reunion on the road would cause inconvenience to passing cars, so Himeko dad was guiding the pooches onto the pedestrian path.  Even during that time, Taiga could not wait for a cuddle.

タイガの耳がぺったんこ（私には絶対こんな態度を見せません）。呆れたような、ひめこの視線。

Taiga's ears are flat (she never does that with me).  Himeko's eyes speak volumes.

ひめこは「もういいんじゃない？」と言いたそう。

この夢心地の顔も、私には見せません。タイガにとって、ひめパパはこの世で一番好きな人のようです。まあ、勝手にどうぞ。

Taiga's face - is she about to swoon?  She never looks like this with me.  I can safely conclude that Himeko dad is Taiga's most favourite person on earth.

昨日、練馬の渋谷園芸で買った紅筋山百合は、1本は蕾の状態でしたが、今朝には開花していました。朝起きて寝室のガラス戸を開けたとたん、山百合の香りが２階まで漂ってきました。石鹸の香りのような独特の良い匂いです。

朝散歩から帰って鉢に植え付けました。右が昨日の夕方時点で蕾だったほうです。期待していたほどには紅筋が入っていないので少々ガッカリ。

One of the Yamayuri lilies I bought yesterday evening was still in a flower bud state then.  It was already open this morning.  When I woke up and opened the glass door upstairs this morning, I could smell the scent of Yamanyuri flowers.  They have a unique, soapy scent that I love.  

When we got home after the morning walk, I planted the lilies in a tall pot.  The one on the right is the plant that had a flower bud yesterday evening.  It turned out that this one does not have strong red streaks.

昨日の記事で説明した「上根」が出るよう、深植えにしました。

I planted them deep, so that they will start growing roots above the bulbs, as I explained in yesterday's posting.

紅筋山百合はやはり緑の中で映えます。果樹の間の明るい日陰で管理して、今度の冬までに球根が育つよう頑張ります。

Red-streak Yamayuri flowers look their best against the green background.  I will take care of these lilies in the light shade, under the fruit trees.  Hopefully, roots will start growing above the bulbs by winter this year.

今年の１月下旬に挿し木した日本ナツメを、鉢に植え付けることにしました。写真向かって左の挿し穂は新梢がよく伸びているので、

I prepared these Japanese jujube cuttings in late January this year.  Now they should be ready for planting.  The one on the left has well grown new branches, so

この根っこが出ていると思います。

probably these roots belong to that cutting.

一方、右側の挿し穂は、２本の新梢は出ているけど、その後の追加的な成長がありません。また、根っこも見当たらない。

In contrast, the cutting on the right has two branches of about 10cm, but they are not growing - I do not see any additional growth.  Moreover, I do not see any roots close to it.

実際に入れ物から出してみると、外から見えていた根っこは全て左側の挿し穂のものでした。

When I took them out of the clear pot, there was no surprise.  All the visible roots through the plastic wall belonged to this cutting.

ここまで発根していれば、鉢上げした後も育つでしょう。

With so much roots, there is no worry about transplanting.

早速７号鉢に植え付けました。今の涼しい天気のうちに体力を回復して、猛暑が戻ってきたら勢いよく育って欲しいです。

I planted it in a 21cm pot.  Currently, we are having a break from the extreme heat, and I hope this plant will build up its strength in this cool weather, so that it can take advantage of heat and sun when the heat wave returns.

ヤマユリ Yamayuri lilies

 ある部品が欲しくてまたしても練馬のホムセンへ行きましたが、それが置いてなくて空振りでした。チャリこいで遥々やって来たので拍子抜けの気持ち。そのまま帰るのはもったいないので、もう少し先の渋谷園芸本店まで足を伸ばしました。

I went to the home depo in Nerima again in order to get a certain widget, but they did not have it in stock.  Feeling put off, I moved on to the large plant shop in Nerima, which was some distance away.

花より団子の私は、まず果樹コーナーをチェック。５月23日に品種不明の中国ナツメを買った棚を確認。まだあの日本種ナツメ２本が、そのまま残っていました。

I went straight to the section with fruit bearing trees.  First, I checked to see what jujube plants they had.  Surprisingly, no change whatsoever - the two Japanese jujube trees were still unsold, after I got that Chinese plant with no name tag.  No new additions whatsoever.

近くにはイチジクの新苗がありました。小苗なのに実がゴロゴロ。

Nearby, there were several varieties of young fig trees.  One of the cultivars, called Negronne (aka Violette de Bordeaux) had lots of fruits on them, in spite of the small trees.

品種は私が育てたことのないネグローネ。フルーティで美味しい品種のようですが、小粒なのが残念。ラベルによると非常に豊産性だそうで、かなり心が揺さぶられましたが、スペース難のうちでは２本目はムリです。去年買ったルージュ・ド・ボルドーをまずまともに育てないと。

I have never tried this cultivar before.  Its fruits are said to be fruity and delicious, but the fruit size is tiny.  According to the label, this is a very prolific cultivar.  I was nearly persuaded, but I kept my senses because there is no space left for a second cultivar - the plant I bought last year, Rouge de Bordeaux, needs to grow up.

大苗の下の段には小苗が置いてあり、パレットごとに異なる品種が入っています。

In front of the larger olive plants, there are tens of pallets with small plants, each with different cultivars.

大苗のうちの１本が特に豊産性で目を引きました。実の先端がとんがって若干上向きだったのでピクアルかと思いましたが、

One of the large olive trees appears particularly prolific.  The tip of the fruit is pointed and looking lightly upwards, so I thought it might be the Spanish variety 'Picual'.

ラベルによると「ペンドリーノ」とありました。帰宅して調べたら、イタリア原産のオイル抽出用の品種だそうです。以前、地元JAで買ったピクアルは自家結実性がありましたが、この品種はないそうです。JAで買ったのは、ひとつの鉢にピクアルとシプレッシーノが一緒に植わっていた挿し木苗でした。別々の10号鉢に植えたらビュンビュン伸びて根っこがキツキツになりました。今年の冬に斜め向かいの公園で2-3本の木が枯死して場所が開いたので、両方とも開いた場所に植えました。終日ひなたの場所で、肥料をやって、週一で水やりもしているうちに、すっかり立派になっています。

However, according to the label, it is called 'Pendolino'.  I looked it up after coming home and learned that it is an Italian variety for extracting oil.  Picual is self-fertile, but Pendolino is not.  I once bought a pot of olives with Picual and Cipressino planted together.  I immediately separated them and repotted in a 30cm pot each.  They grew rapidly and the roots were looking tight in spring this year.  In the small park nearly opposite to my house, a few trees died during the winter, leaving vacant spots.  So, I planted these olive trees there and they have done remarkably well.  They now grow in perfectly sunny spots, and I water them once a week.  They now look well established alongside other trees.

草花の棚を見回っているうちに、珍しいものを発見。紅筋ヤマユリです。かつて山百合に凝っていた時期、紅筋に何度も挑戦しましたが、暑い街中では普通の山百合よりもさらに栽培が困難でした。でも、花を見ているうちに......
I then moved on to flowers and found a shelf with rare plants - Yamayuri lilies with red streaks.  More than 10 years ago, I was really into Yamayuri lilies, particularly the ones with red streaks.  However, as the name Yamayuri (mountain lily) suggests, they grow well in the wild but not in towns.  The ones with red streaks are extremely rare in the wild (I grew up in a mountainous region but never saw one), and they are also more delicate than the regular ones with golden streaks.  As I kept gazing at the flowers,

２本連れ帰りました。ある理由から、最も開花が遅れているものを選びました。

その理由とは、こういう苗は「１シーズンの間 眺めて終了」するような植え方をされているので、なるべく成長期が長くなるように、です。ユリの場合、根っこが球根の上と下に別々の機能をもって出てきます。下の根は地上部を支えるためのもの。上の根は成長のための栄養素を吸収する機能。それが、このような浅い鉢で植えられていると、上根は存在しません。よって、現在は球根に蓄積されていた養分を使いながら花を咲かせようとしています。養分を使い果たした球根は冬までには枯れてしまうでしょう。地植えにしてもその位置が浅ければ同じことで、空洞があとに残っているだけ。なるべく成長が遅れている苗を選ぶことで、少しでも今シーズン中に上根が生えてくる可能性が高くなると期待しています。

これらの苗の場合、軽石の単用なので、さらに栄養素の無い状態で今日まで来たことになり、まともな植え付けが急務。でも、もう暗くなる時間だし、いつも使っている用土を買ってこなければならないので、作業は明日にします

I could not resist the temptation and came home with two of them.  For a reason, I chose the ones that were lagging behind others in terms of growth.  These are planted in shallow pots that allow the plant to live for only one season.  Now, with lilies, they have roots above and below the bulb, each with a different function.  The roots above are tasked with absorbing nutrition from soil, whereas the roots below the bulb are there to support the plant above the ground.  If a lily bulb is planted in such a shallow pot like these, it has no roots above the bulb.  This means that the plant has been eating into its own bulb since spring, in order to grow the flower.  By winter, the plant will have consumed all the nutrition in the bulb and the plant is destined to die.  If it is planted in the ground at a shallow level, the same thing happens - you will be left with a hollow space in the ground.

By choosing laggards, I am hoping that these will have longer time to grow roots above the bulb, during the remaining season.

In the case of these plants I bought, they used pumice only.  These plants must be absolutely starving.  However, they will have to wait until tomorrow, since it is getting dark.  Also, I need to go and buy the reliable soil that I use for all of my new plants.

根伏せの実験 Root Cutting Propagation experiment

今朝の水やりのときに気付いたのですが、早脆王棗の鉢の表土に白いものが出ていて、それが根っこの溢れ出たものだと分かりました。

When I was watering the jujube plants this morning, I noticed white things coming out of the soil of the Early Crisp King jujube pot.  They were roots, surfacing out of the ground.

これほどにまで勢いのある根っこなら、根伏せで芽が出ないか実験することにしました。この切り取った根っこを、

I thought that if the roots are so vigorous, will it not start growing leaf buds if planted in a separate pot?  So, I cut it out of the soil, and

乾燥しないうちに素焼きダオン鉢と庭土で埋めておきました。これで発芽したら驚きものですが、とにかく試してみないことには分かりません。

planted it immediately to prevent it from getting dry.  I used a clay pot and garden soil.  If it works, I would be thrilled.

ダメで元々。早脆王の根っこは異常に強靭で、スリットの鉢からはみ出しています。今日から鉢に受け皿をつけて沢山水分を吸収させ、今後の高温・乾燥を乗り切ってもらいます。

Taking a small strip of root was no burden on the root stock or Early Crisp King itself.  The roots are super vigorous, oozing out of the side slits.  I placed a saucer under the pot so that the plant would never go thirsty during the coming hot and dry season.

今日は夕方から雷雨の予報なので、午後の早めの時間帯に公園へ行きました。今日の最高気温は36℃で、この蒸し暑さは異常です。本当に雨が降ってくれたら少しはヒンヤリするでしょう。

They were forecasting that we would have thunder/lightening/heavy rain towards the evening, so we went to the park well before the dusk.  The maximum temperature was 36℃ again today.  If it rains heavily as they warn us, it will bring the temperature down.  (As it happened, it rained cats and dogs.  I might even be able to sleep without the air conditioner on tonight.)

花ザクロがまだ咲いていました。返り咲きなのか、開花期が異常に長いのか知りません。

The flowering pomegranate tree was still in bloom - not sure whether it is flowering out of season, or if this variety has such a long flowering season.

赤い花は白の覆輪入りですが、咲き分けする木なので、他の枝にはクリーム色の花が咲いています。

This variety has two types of branches - branches with red flowers with white rims, and branches with solid white flowers.

この木の半分くらいが、クリーム色の花が咲く枝で占められています。

Branches with solid white flowers occupy roughly half of this tree.

近くで見ると結構きれいな花です。

Up close, the white flowers look elegant, whereas the red flowers are showy.
