今朝、城北公園の川べりを歩いていると、工事中の向こう岸の川底に黒い点があるのが気になりました。まさか、と思って目を凝らして見ると、やはり子猫です。石神井川は岸から川底までは10メートル近くあります。降りる階段などむろん無いので、何等かの拍子で落ちたとしか考えられません。カメラレンズをズームして確認。耳をかすかに動かしたので生きています。
As I was walking the dog along the river at the Johoku Park, a dark dot caught my eyes. I stopped and confirmed that it was a kitten! He (for convenience, I call it 'he') was crouching on the dry riverbed where the shallow water did not reach. Above him was the construction site where they have been building an underground reservoir to deal with floods. The bank is nearly 10 metres tall and there was no way that the kitten got there other than by falling. When I zoomed in with my camera, I noticed that the kitten's ears were moving slightly.
さらにズームしてみると、背中を丸めてなんとも頼りなさそう。今は水深が深いところで20cmほどしかないので川底の両脇が露わになっていますが、台風22号が関東に最も接近する9日には増水して深さ1メートルは超えるでしょう。石神井川は昔は「暴れ川」と呼ばれていたそうで水量の増減が激しく、その洪水対策としていま調整池が建設されているところです。
By zooming in further, I could see how forlorn he was with his round back. Currently, the water is about 20 cm deep and there is dry space on either side of the riverbed. However, typhoon No. 22 is approaching. At its peak on 9th October, the water will easily exceed 1 metre. The Shakujii River is known for its extremes between low and high levels of water and that is why they are constructing the adjustment reservoir.
岸の上では地下調整池を作る工事が進行中。（この↓写真は今朝のではありません。気が転倒していて、周りの景色を撮るなんて考えもしませんでした。）

ちょうど犬友が通りがかったので、一緒に（加勢してもらって）工事事務所の監督さんに会いに行き、事情を説明して保健所および警察に電話してくれるよう要請しました（個人が電話するより大型公共工事の事業所のほうが影響力ある）。その後、保健所に登録して公園の猫にエサやりしている知人に電話。二人で午後の早い時間に今朝の工事事務所に行き、電話の結果を尋ねると、「消防の人がやって来て川底に降りて救出を試みたが逃げられた」とのことでした。人間を恐れる野良の子猫にとって、逃走することしかできなかったようです。
その後、二人で川岸にそって探し回ったところ、かなりの時間が経ってやっと発見。そのときも、写真を撮ることなど考える余裕もなく、どうやってまずエサを与えるか、いろいろ考えてプラスチック袋に食品トレイをいれ、その上に臭いの強いウェットフードを４種類入れて、ヒモに吊るして川底へ下ろしました。これ↓は、近くのコンビニで買ってきた40メートルの園芸用ヒモ。あとで、その40メートルの有難さを実感しました。
Luckily, an acquaintance came along with his dog. I asked him to accompany me to go to the management office and speak to the chief (more clout by recruiting a friend). We requested the chief to phone both the Nerima Ward Public Health Office as well as the police (more clout when a chief of public works calls, rather than an individual). After getting home, I rang a friend who is a registered person permitted to feed stray cats in the Johoku Park. We met after lunch and visited this morning's management office. We were told that people from the Fire Department came and tried to catch the kitten but failed. A feral kitten afraid of humans could only think of running away. We then started looking for the kitten along the river. It took us a long time, since we had to look in two opposite directions starting from the point I saw the cat this morning. At last, we found him (again, no time to think of taking photos). The first thing we wanted to do was to feed him. After discussing, we placed a plastic tray inside a plastic bag with handles and then put 4 types of wet food with strong aromas. I got a ball of string from the nearest shop - the string was 40 metres which came in handy later. We tied the plastic bag to the string and lowered it to the riverbed.
子猫がうずくまっている場所から３メートルくらい目先にエサを下ろしました。その間、子猫は何が起きているか、ジッと警戒して見ていました。エサが着地すると、ほどなく歩み寄って、袋の中に顔を突っ込んで食べ始めました。
We placed the bag about 3 metres away from the kitten. He was watching intently what we were doing. Soon after we placed the bag on the ground, the kitten came and put his head inside the bag to eat the food.
一心不乱に食べています。尻尾を体の横につけているのは、落ち着いているからでしょうか？ 強風で吊るしたヒモが揺れているのがわかります。
He never once looked up but kept eating - he must have been starving. Looking at his tail by his body, I felt that he was relaxed. The string kept swaying in the strong wind.一旦 子猫のお腹が満たされたあと、これからどうするかについて二人で話し合っているところへ、もう一人加わりました。その人は初対面のひとで、私たちが子猫にエサを届けようとしているのをみた妹さんが電話連絡してきたそうです。
三人であれころ話し合っているうちに、かなり時間がたちました。救出自体、非常に困難で、普通は１日では終わらない上に、いざ救出したあと子猫の行く先についても事前に考えをまとめておくべきだからです。
とにかく、一般人が川底へ降りていくのは禁じられています。川岸のコンクリ壁にはハシゴのような取っ手が埋め込まれている箇所がありますが、しろうとが10メートルも下へ伝って降りるのは危険で、実際、過去に一人の人が命を落としたことがあるそうです。
最終的に、捕獲カゴを借りてきました。それに、先ほどの40メートル紐を使って３か所に紐を括り付けて、三人でバランスを取りながら強風のなか、川底へ下ろしました。さっき、あんなに餌を食べたあとなので「カゴに入るのは何時になるやら」と覚悟していたのですが、ほどなく子猫はカゴに入ってきて、またしても餌を食べ始めました。カゴの入口から奥まで餌を置いてあったので、奥まで侵入した瞬間にトラップドアを閉じて確保。上から見ていて驚いたのは、普通、扉が閉まったとたんにネコは暴れるはずなのに、この子はジッとうずくまっていました。
猫が入ったので、また三人して強風に揺れるカゴを慎重に引き上げました。
猫が怖がらないように「やったぁー」と三人で声を殺しながら大喜びしている間も、子猫はおとなしくしてます。
The plate came back completely clean. While we were discussing what to do next, a stranger approached us saying that her sister had phoned her after seeing us trying to feed the kitten. Such a welcome addition to discuss the matter on hand. Normally, rescuing a cat in this circumstance takes more than a day. Assuming we succeed in the rescue, what would we do with the cat? Talking about all these took us a long time.
At any rate, going down to the riverbed for us is forbidden. There are handles embedded in the concrete wall of the riverbank, but a lay person trying to go down the 10 metres lost his life in the past.
Miraculously, we managed to get a cage designed for rescuing cats. We tied strings in 3 places on the cage to minimise swaying. Three of us held a string each and lowered the cage carefully in the strong wind. We were half resigned to wait for a long time, since the kitten had just eaten. Amazingly, the kitten walked up to the cage and entered it to eat more. The moment he reached the deep end of the cage we shut the trap door. It really surprised us to see that the kitten remained calm. Normally, the cat would panic once trapped.
With the cat inside the cage, we started lifting the cage gingerly. After placing the cage at our feet, we were elated but suppressed our voices as we congratulated each other so as not to startle the kitten. Meanwhile, the kitten remained perfectly peaceful.

一度もシャーと言わず大人しいですが、目つきがコワイ。

However, his eyes look like daggers.あまりにも順調な救出劇に、三人とも半信半疑のままお互いを称え会っていたところへ、消防車がやって来て近くの橋の上で止まりました。複数の電話通報があったのでやって来たそうです。どうやら、私たち三人が延々と時間をかけて四苦八苦しているのを、両岸を通った人たちが連絡してくれたようです。既に暗くなり始めているので写真がボケていますが、消防の人たちはかなり若くて爽やか。消防隊のオジサンイメージが変わってしまいました。救出作業には間に合わなかったけど、来てくれただけでも感謝でした。
肝心の子猫はというと、妹さんから連絡を受けてやって来た方が一晩預かり、明日、NPO法人に連絡してくださることになりました。そのNPO法人は猫の保護活動の一環として、避妊・去勢手術、さらには里親探しもしてくれるそうです。
While we were still jubilant for the rescue operation that went too smoothly, a fire engine arrived and stopped on the bridge nearby. According to the firefighters who just arrived, there had been a few calls from concerned public about us struggling to rescue the cat. Those people must have passed by us on either side of the river, but we were too occupied to notice. It was getting dark, and the photo is blurred, but the three firefighters were young with really pleasant manners, in contrast to the image I always had - middle-aged burly men. Although they arrived too late, we were nevertheless grateful for their intention.
As to the kitten, the lady who joined us after getting a call from her sister will take care of it overnight. She will phone the cat rescue NPO in Nerima tomorrow morning. The NPO rescues, gives necessary medical care including spaying/neutering, as well as finding a forever home.
公園の萩よりも花着きが良いので綺麗です。
ググってみたら、「オオシロカラカサタケ」の写真がこれらと似ていました。もし本当にそれなら毒キノコだそうで、もう二度と指先で触ったりしません。
