秋の花など Autumn flowers etc

 朝散歩で四中横の草地に着くと、フヨウの花が咲いていました。

When we arrived at one of the fields of Johoku Park, I saw bushes of Hibiscus mutabilis  with flowers.

フヨウは夏の花というイメージですが、秋のほうが開花の勢いがあるような気がします。以前育てていた八重咲の酔芙蓉は、11月中旬まで延々と咲き続けていました。木がどんどん大きくなり、うちの小さな庭を独占する勢いだったので、残念ながらリストラしました。写真のフヨウは酔芙蓉ではなく、朝からピンク色です。対して酔芙蓉の花は、早朝からお昼近くまでは白、午後からピンクになり、夕方から夜・翌朝には赤色に近い濃い色へと変化したのが魅力でした。とにかくハデハデな花でした。

This plant is associated with summer, but it seems to thrive in our warm autumn weather.  I used to grow a confederate rose tree in my garden, which kept flowering up to mid-November.  The tree grew fast like grass and ended up occupying almost the whole of my tiny front garden.  I loved the flowers but had to get rid of the tree.  Those flowers were white in the morning, turned pink in the early afternoon, and went on to deepen in colour and became almost red in the evening to the following morning.  They were such showy flowers.

この草地のは、夏に一度咲いたあと、まるで雑草刈りのように地際近くまで切られましたが、こうやって秋には復活しています。驚異的な生命力です。

The bushes in this field were cut down to the ground after summer flowering.  However, by autumn, they came back and started flowering again.  What a strong power to survive.

フヨウのとなりでは萩の花も咲き始めています。

Next to the hibiscus bush, there is bush clover - another plant that announces the arrival of autumn.

園芸種ではなく野生の萩のようで、ひっそりと小さな花です。

This is a wild variety that you can find anywhere in the countryside, so the flowers are very modest, like in the world of 'wabi sabi'

草丈は、かなりあります。

The bush is as tall as the hibiscus tree.

天気予報どおり、午後からは空模様が急変して雷雨の嵐。おまけに爆発音のような雷の最中に、小さな地震まで感じられました。そのうち、部屋の中がパッと明るくなるほどの稲妻があったかと思うと、直ぐ近くで爆弾のような音がしたときはびっくりして、2階へ上がってあたりを見渡したほどです。

夕方散歩の頃には雨が止んでいたので庭の様子を確認したら、門の内側に置いてあるミカン「日南の姫」の実が2個落ちていました。ここ２、３日で色づき始めていたのは知っていましたが、雨で落ちたようです。

The weather forecast was accurate, and the sky suddenly turned dark after lunch.  We had a series of explosive lightning and thunder, and we even had a small earthquake in the middle of all that.  Once, the room was lit up by a lightning and simultaneously we had an explosion of noise.  I was convinced that it dropped in our neighbourhood and went upstairs to look around.  Fortunately, no fire or damage reported.

When it was the time for our evening walk, the rain had stopped temporarily, and I checked my plants.  I found that two fruits had fallen on the ground from the early-ripening tangerine plant, Hinano-Hime.  

最も小さい２個です。

These are the smallest of the fruits, and they started turning yellow a few days ago.

以前は、右側のこの実ともう一個の同じサイズの実が最初に色づくのかと思っていました。

I used to think that the largest two fruits (one of them on the right) were going to ripen first.

残りの実はゆっくり色づきそうなので、これから長く楽しめます。今日落ちた実は、2，3日追熟させてから味見する予定です。

This variety is the earliest ripening tangerine, and I hope they will take time so that I can enjoy looking at the fruits longer.  The two fruits that dropped today will be left to ripen for a few days.

朝散歩など Morning Walk etc

 隣町の江古田へ行く途中にある調剤薬局の建物にはブドウ棚があり、毎年この時期たわわにブドウの房がぶら下がっています。特に世話をしている様子も見受けられないけど豊作です。

There is a dispensing pharmacy between our district and our neighbouring town, which has scaffolding with grape vines.  Around this time every year, the vines are heavy with grapes nearing maturity.  I have never seen anyone taking care of the plant, but every year is a bumper year.

ここは建物が密集している半商業地区の狭い路地で、風通しは悪いし、陽当たりは周りの建物に遮られて更に良くありません。なのに、葉っぱがハダニで銀色になることはありません。

This is a heavily built semi-commercial area with narrow back streets.  Air movement is poor, and direct sun light is limited.  Yet, the leaves never seem to suffer from spider mites but stay healthy.

こんなに丈夫な品種が何なのか分かりませんが、だんだん皮が透き通った感じになってきているので、そろそろ完熟のようです。

Whatever variety this tough plant is, the skin on the fruits is getting translucent, suggesting that the grapes are getting nearly ripe.

うちの近所の庭で見かけたネコ。タイガは顔にネコパンチを食らっても猫好きなので、目が釘付け。

A cat relaxing in my neighbour's garden.  In spite of several punches Taiga has received in the face, she likes cats and was rivetted on the spot.

綺麗な茶トラ猫。上唇の膨らみからすると、オスでしょう。Youtubeで海外の動画を見ていると、メスの茶トラも結構生まれるようですが、日本では稀なはず。

A beautiful ginger cat.  Judging by the full upper lip, it looks like a male.  In fact, almost all the ginger cats in Japan are male, although I have seen quite a few females in YouTube videos from abroad.

うちの斜め向かいにある小さな公園の栗の木には栗が鈴なり。

A lot of sweet chestnuts growing on the tree in the tiny park almost opposite to my house.

園芸品種ではなく柴栗なので実は小さいです。

This is a wild chestnut tree that you can find in mountains in Japan, and the nuts are small but very sweet.

今朝のローゼル。予想どおり２輪が開花。

As expected, two flowers were open this morning on the roselle plant.

昨日 咲いた花のガクは、これから赤く色づくのを見るのが楽しみです。

It will be interesting to watch the calyx from yesterday's flower turning red soon.

先日２度目のリンゴの袋外しをしたばかりですが、もう汚損果が出始めています。ただし汚損が発生するのはいつも赤肉種の「紅の夢」だけで、グラニースミスや紅玉は今までのところ無傷です。

I bagged the apples twice this summer.  Soon after removing the bags for the second time, dark spots began to appear on some of the red-fleshed apples called 'Kurenai-no-Yume'.  Damages are found only on this cultivar and the fruits of Granny Smith and Kogyoku are so far clean.

あぁもう、いいや！と思って最初の実を採りました。キズの中心にまるで的のように色の濃い点があるのは、もしかして虫の侵入あと？と思うと気味悪いですが、とにかく確認です。

Feeling helpless, I picked the first fruit shown above.  The dark centre looking like a target bothered me.  Is there a bug inside?  I had to check what it was.

半割りにしてみると、恐れていたイモムシっぽいものはいませんでした。その代わり、キズの部分がゼリー状。まるで人間の場合、外部からのバイ菌などと戦うために白血球が集合してできる膿を連想させました。

To my relief, I did not see any bug wriggling inside.  Instead, the dark spot was filled with jelly-like substance.  If it were a human body, white blood cells would gang up in order to fight against the intruding bacteria etc, with the result you get a pocket of pus.

ローゼルの第一花 Roselle Flower

早朝散歩から帰って庭の様子を見ていたら、ローゼルの花が遂に咲き始めたのに気づきました。ハイビスカスの花と比べると随分とジミーです。苗の枝がどんどん伸びて巨大になった一方、花のサイズは小さなアサガオの花程度なので、余計ジミに見えるのかも。

After our early morning walk, I checked the state of the plants in the garden, when I noticed a flower on the roselle plant - the first flower!  It is not like a hibiscus flower but on the duller side.  The plant has grown into a giant and due partly to that, the flower looks small and dull.

草丈は中心の茎が２メートルを超えてしまいました。毎日水をたっぷりやっているので、上へ上へと伸びたようです。

The central stem now exceeds 2 metres.  When I first planted it, I gave plenty of initial fertiliser and have been watering the plant twice a day.  So, it had no choice but to grow in this heat wave.

すぐ隣に植えられているリスボンレモンの木がすっかり隠れてしまうほど、ローゼルの枝葉が茂っています。

There is a Lisbon lemon tree next to the roselle plant, but it is almost hidden behind the latter.

花はお昼ご飯前にタイガのオシッコ散歩で外に出たときは、既に閉じていました。これ↓ は夕方散歩で出たときの様子。

The flower had folded inwards by the time I took Taiga out for a pre-lunch walk.  This photo below was taken when we went out for our evening walk.

閉じた花びらはピンクで、こちらのほうが綺麗な色です。閉じた花の真上にある蕾と、もう一つ支柱の陰になっている蕾が、明日には開花しそうです。

Although the flower has closed, the petal is pink and looks prettier than it did as an open flower.  There are two flower buds that are certain to open tomorrow - one is right above this morning's flower, and the other is behind the gardening prop.

夕方散歩で城北中央公園へ行きました。草は相変わらずボウボウです。草丈が短かった頃は、公園内の散歩を終えて帰宅する前に草地の奥の斜面に座り込んで、夕風に当たりながらまったりしていたものです。

For our evening walk, we went to the Johoku Central Park.  The grass was still not cut.  When the grass was short and the soil dry, we used to sit on the slope at the back of the field after walking in the park and before going home.

今日は湿度が高くてベタベタした一日。林の中を歩くと蚊がすごそうだったので、林の横の道を行きました。

It was exceptionally humid all day today.  Walking in the woods would mean getting bitten by mosquitoes, so we walked on the road next to the woodland.

同じ道を懐かしい子がやって来ました。タイガが子犬のころ、川向こうの草地で一緒に遊んだクラ君です。タイガの尻尾がブンブン。

As we were walking, we saw a familiar face approaching us - a large dog named Kura.  When Taiga was a puppy, they used to play together in the field across the river, where they are currently building anti-flood underground reservoirs.  Taiga's tail is wagging furiously.

In this photo, the pooches are blurred but I am keeping this to preserve the happy memory, since neither of them is young.

川向うの草地だったところは、現在工事中。洪水対策の地下調整池の建設工事です。右半分のこの写真に写っているところは工事の第一期で、最近完了したそうです。

The field across the river has been under public works.  They are constructing adjustment reservoirs for floods.  Of the total project, the First Phase on the right was recently completed after about 8 years.

左の第二期は現在進行中で、さらに８年くらいかかるはずです。ここが草地だったころは、桜の木がたくさん植わっていたし地形も高低の変化があったので、花見にもワンコを遊ばせるにも最適なところでした。あと８年なんて、タイガは待てません。

They have started working on the Second Phase which will likely take 8 more years.  When this place was a vast field, we had many cherry trees, and the ground was varied with hills and mounds.  The field was ideal for cherry blossom seasons, as well as for dogs to play.  Taiga cannot wait for another 8 years.

工事現場を眺めながら、公園の上に向かいます。

Looking over the construction site on the right, we went up the slope to reach the other side of the hill.

ドッグラン近くの花壇の花を眺めながら、ベンチで一休みしてから帰りました。

Having come down the hill, we sat at a bench near the dog park to have a rest before going home.

皇帝ナツメ Emperor Jujube

 去年の５月から育てている皇帝ナツメの実が黄色っぽくなり始めました。去年は摘果の末に10個を残して完熟までいきましたが、今年は20個残してあります。少し離れたところから見ると、小さなリンゴが生っているかのような光景です。

I got this jujube tree in May last year.  Its fruits are now turning creamy coloured.  Last year, I reduced the young fruits to 10, which went on to maturity.  This year, I have left 20.  When I look at the tree from afar, the young fruits look like little apples.

左上の１個が最も色づいている実。

The fruit at the upper left in the photo is the most advanced in nearing maturity.

これです。去年の実はどれもリンゴのようなまん丸だったのに、今年の実の一部はこの↓ように俵っぽい形のものが混じっていて、まるで山西梨棗のようです。

This is the one.  Last year, all the fruits were round like apples.  This year, some of them are squarish, resembling the fruits of Shanxi Li jujube (a cultivar not available in Japan).

これから昼夜の寒暖の差が出てくると、色づきが速まるはず。

They will be turning brown once we start getting wide temperature differences between nights and days.

頂き物です。「結婚式の引き出物で渡されたけど要らない。もらってもらえないなら捨てるつもり」と言われました。私が「これはポーリッシュポタリーでとても価値あるものだから絶対に捨てないで」と言いましたが効果なしでした。そこで、有難く頂きました。

This was given to me this morning by a friend.  It was a part of wedding favours, and she was going to throw it away if I did not take it.  I told her that 'it was Polish pottery and quite valuable, so please keep it with you'.  She was adamant that she had no intention of keeping it.  So, I gratefully accepted it and came home a very happy person.

模様が素朴でまったりした雰囲気です。

The pattern is nothing fanciful - in fact, it is quite homey.

A testimony to say that it was handmade in Poland.

ポーリッシュの陶器はこれで２個になりました。左のクグロフ型は何年も前にネットで買った一品で、青いヒマワリのシリーズものです。熱で痛めるのが怖くて、ババロアなどの冷菓にしか使ったことありません。今日いただいた右の陶器はグラタン皿のようですが、やはり加熱するような料理に使う予定はありません。せいぜい、出来上がった熱々のシチューなどを鍋から移す容器としてなら痛む心配はないでしょうけど。

I now have two Polish pottery items.  I bought the Gugelhuph mould on the left many years ago, and it is one of the blue sunflower series.  I am too scared to use it in the oven, in case I harm it, so, I use it only for cold desserts such as bavarois.  Likewise, the gratin dish-like item I got today will not be used in the oven.  At the most, I might serve warm stew in this dish.
