午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 今日の最高気温はまたしても37℃、明日の予報は38℃のようです。これがお盆過ぎだと思うと、もう呆れる暑さ。しかも蒸す。にも拘わらずタイガは家の中で退屈しきっているせいか、外の暑さを考えずに「散歩に行こう！」のメッセージを送るために、寝そべっているそばを私が通るたびに頭を上げて（暗い）圧をかけてきました。しょうがないので、午後の４時過ぎに城北中央公園へ。

Another hot day today, with the maximum temperature reaching 37℃.  The forecast for tomorrow is 38℃.  In old days, after Obon (August 15th), the weather usually turned autumn-like, with red dragonflies flying in the cool evening air.  Despite the hot and humid day outside, Taiga was getting too bored inside the house, and every time I passed close by, she lifted her head as if to say 'At last, are we going out?'  I succumbed to her pressure, and we went out after 4 p.m.

夕方散歩には早すぎる時間なので、見渡してもワン友の姿はありません。

When we arrived at the Johoku Central Park, it was too early for an evening walk and did not see any familiar faces.

写真だけなら清々しそうな風景です。実際は蒸し蒸しするし、なにしろセミの鳴き声がすごい。「セミ時雨」とはよく言ったものです。でも、ミンミンゼミに交じって、１匹だけのようですがツクツクボウシの声もしました。

In the photo below, the place looks cool and fresh.  In reality, it was hot and humid.  Moreover, the ringing sounds of cicadas were overbearing.  However, among the usual cicadas associated with summer, I heard one type of cicada that normally starts appearing at the end of summer.

Before going up to the higher ground, we stopped at the bench in the woods for Taiga's treat.

最近 気になり始めたのですが、猛暑の中を長く歩くと、タイガの目の下に深いクマのようなものができます。かなり疲れて見えます。そんなことは他所に、オヤツを期待するタイガは、もうヨダレが始まっています。

Recently, I noticed that she gets heavy eye bags when she walks a long distance in the extreme heat.  Here in this photo, she really looks tired, showing her age.  Free of such thoughts, Taiga started salivating at the sight of chicken jerky.

空気の流れがあったらしく、ヨダレが横方向へ垂れています。

The saliva started to sway sideways in the slightest of air movement.

モグモグしながら更にヨダレが生成されるので、泡ふいています。

As she was munching, more saliva was created, and now she looked foaming at the mouth.

公園の上の広場へ移動しました。

We went up to the field at the top of the hill.

いつもの草風呂が始まりました。シャンプーしたばかりなのに。

As usual, Taiga started her 'grass bath'.  I only shampooed her a few days ago.

満足そうな顔。

She looks happy at any rate.

日南の姫 Hinano-Hime tangerine

 ミカンの日南の姫（ひなのひめ）の幼果がだいぶ大きくなってきました。この品種は極早生で９月上旬から収穫できるそうですが、うちではもっと後になります。

以前２階バルコニーで育てていたとき、夏は灼熱の砂漠のようになる環境で枯死寸前まで衰弱しました。その後の回復が芳しくなかったため、今年の春にはダメ元で、地上部は主枝が丸坊主になるまで切り戻して、根っこも減らして植え戻しました。鉢は相変わらず10号ロングスリット。

The young fruits of Hinano-Hime tangerine have grown to good sizes.  This is a very early ripening variety, and commercial growers start harvesting early September onwards.  However, in my place, they ripen a lot later than that.

I used to keep this plant on the upstairs balcony, where it becomes hot and dry like a desert in the summer, and the tree nearly died.  The recovery since then has been very slow and not encouraging.  So, in spring this year, I felt I had nothing to lose and cut back drastically on the main branches, while the roots were also reduced and replanted in the same 30 cm diameter long pot.

春の開花後 幼果がたくさん着いたので少しずつ減らして、今は13個になっています。鉢を置いている場所は門の内側、郵便受けの下。風通しはすぐ左上の花壇ほどではないけど、葉っぱは以前のようにカイガラが着くこともなく綺麗です。うちの環境では、リンゴ栽培とは異なり、柑橘類は完全無農薬で間に会うクリーンな果樹です。

After the flowering in spring, the tree had a lot of young fruits which have been reduced to 13 of them now.  The plant is placed next to the gate and under the letter box.   This spot is not as airy as the flower bed on the left which is more elevated.  Nevertheless, the plant has been free of cotton scale insects which used to plague this tree on the balcony.  In my place, citrus trees can grow without any pesticides, unlike apple trees.  To me, they are very clean fruit trees.

最初の写真では枝の何本かは実の重さで垂れていたので、そのうち折れそうなものもあります。そこで、支柱を１本立てて樹形を調整しました。

In the first photo above, some of the branches were hanging low by the weight of fruits, and I was afraid a few of them might break off soon.  So, I put a prop to tidy the branches.

１本の支柱に３本の枝を括り付けました。これで安心して見ていられます。

This one prop is holding 3 branches which look secure.  I can now sit back and watch the young fruits grow larger.

パンザオに恒常的な枝 Permanent branch on Panzao

 今朝の天気は一段と蒸し暑くて、歩いているうちに首が汗でチクチクしてくるほどでした。帰り道、家の近くまで来たところで近所のペキニーズのユキヤ君と会えました。お座敷犬のペキニーズらしい散歩が嫌いな子ですが、この天気では早く帰りたくて歩くこと拒否の状態でした。

The weather this morning was particularly hot and humid, and as I was walking, the sweat on my neck became stinging.  On our way home, we met our neighbour's Pekingese, named Yukiya, when we were nearly home.  Typical of a couch dog, Yukiya hates walking, and in this weather, he hates every second of being outside.  So, he was refusing to move any more.

ユキヤに「一緒に帰ろ」と言ったら喜んでついてきました。

When I said 'Let's go home' to Yukiya, he happily followed us.

うちの前まで来て、散歩の締めくくりのオヤツ。ユキヤは私が作るチキンジャーキーの味を知っているので、嬉しそうな顔です。

When we reached our house, I took out treats.  Yukiya knows the taste of my home-made chicken jerky and looked pleased.

夕方には暗い雲と雷で今にも雨が降りそうだったので、排水口が詰まらないよう急いでバルコニーの掃除をしました。最近、バルコニーに出るときの楽しみは、パンザオを観察することです。樹高はまだ60cmほどで、早脆王や無核金絲棗の半分くらいの高さです。

Towards the evening, the sky became overcast with continuous thunder.  I hurried upstairs to clean the balcony so as to ensure that the drain outlets were clear of debris.  Recently, I have had a reason to go out to the balcony - to watch the state of Panzao jujube plant.  Currently, the tree is barely 60 cm, about 1/2 of Early Crisp King and Seedless Gold Thread.

でも、数日続いた雨のあと猛暑が戻ってきたのと同時に、パンザオに恒常的な枝が出始めました。

However, after the recent rain and the heat wave that followed, I noticed a new permanent branch growing on top of the plant.

現在10cmくらいですが、これでやっと来年以降の成長が確かになりました。去年の12月に届いた３品種のうち、パンザオが本命だったので嬉しい発展です。

Currently, it is only 10 cm tall but ensures future growth of this tree.  Of the 3 varieties that arrived in December last year, this Panzao was the reason why I placed the order.

パンザオに生っているただ一つの実は、順調に肥大しています。それにつれてパンザオ特有の扁平な形が明らかになっています。

The tree has only this fruit, and it is growing nicely.  As it grows, the unique shape of this cultivar becomes evident - looking like a flat peach.

私の人差し指との比較はこう。是非、完熟まで育ってほしいです。米国のYoutuberでパンザオを育てている人によると、とても甘くてジューシーでカリカリの食感だそうです。

A comparison with the tip of my index finger.  I do hope this young fruit will grow to maturity.  According to a Youtuber in the US, her Panzao fruits are very sweet, juicy, and crispy.

シャンプー後 After Shampoo

 今年の夏、タイガはまるで換毛期がずっと継続しているかのように毛が抜けています。もうシャンプーしたほうが手っ取り早い、と思って午後にタイガを洗いました。今日も猛暑で熱風が吹くなか、公園へ向かいました。

This summer, Taiga's moulting never ended, and she continues to shed heavily.  I thought it was quicker to shampoo her than to brush, and so I washed her in the afternoon.  It was another 36℃-day today, with hot winds blowing when we headed for the park.

歩いているうちにだんだんと乾いてきて、抜け毛が表面に浮き上がってきます。この↓白っぽくてボサボサしているのが、ちょっと触ればゴソっと抜けてくるルースヘアです。

As we were walking, her coat became drier, and the loose hair started to rise to the surface.  The pale, unsmooth hair is itching to come off from her sides.

 

お尻もどっさり抜け毛が出やすい部位です。見るたびに引っ張りたくてウズウズしますが、草地に着けばブラシを掛けて抜け毛は袋に収納・持ち帰りするので、それまでのガマン。

Likewise on her bottom - lots of loose hair from her pale undercoat.  It was so tempting to pull it out, but I had to wait until we got to the nearest field, so that I could brush her and bag the loose hair to take home in order not to litter the street or the park.

途中、コンビニでアイスクリームを買ったので、タイガはウキウキで公園を目指します。

On our way, I stopped at a convenience store to get a soft ice.  Taiga was very happy and quickened her steps.

溶けないうちに一刻も早く食べようと、城北公園手前の草地でベンチに座りました。今日のはジャージー牛乳ソフト。なぜかキャラメル風味でウソっぽいですが、美味しい。

At the nearest field before the Johoku Central Park, we sat at a bench and table so that we could start eating the ice cream before it melted.  I got a Jersey milk soft ice.  It is artificially caramel flavoured but tastes delicious.

アイスを分けてもらえるのを静かにジッと待っていて、本当にシアワセそうな顔で食べるので、最後の台の部分は全部あげました。

She waits for her serving patiently and quietly and she eats with such a happy face that I gave her the whole of the bottom part to finish.

アイスの後は橋を渡って城北中央公園へ移動。時計はちょうど４時を指しています。

After eating the ice cream, we crossed the bridge and moved to the Johoku Central Park.  At the entrance, the clock pointed to 4 p.m.

猛暑の午後だし夕方散歩には早すぎる時間なので、人影はまばら。

Due to the hot weather and it being too early for evening walk, there were few people in sight.

公園上のほうへ上がりましたが、今日はどこへ行っても暑い風しか吹いていませんでした。

We went up to the upper part of the park.  Wherever we went, we could not escape from hot winds.

リンゴの袋外し Removing apple bags

 ここ数日の雨のあと、またしてもリンゴの葉っぱがハダニだらけになっていました。今日のハダニは私の目で見てもはっきり分かる黒っぽいものだったので、7月以降の目に見えないほど極小のもととは異なる種類だったかも。今回もベーキングソーダ系の溶液を作ってスプレーしました。30分以上たってからシャワー水で溶液を洗い落とすと、後にはオレンジ色の液体が袋についていました。私が作る溶液はベーキングソーダ、展着剤としてコーンスターチ、および水だけで作っているので、色は若干白く曇るけどオレンジ色とは無縁。といことは、ハダニの死骸からのものだと思います。

シャワー水ですっきりした後は、リンゴの袋を全部外しました。いとも簡単に袋が取れてきたので、あっけないくらいでした。写真の青色矢印の鉢植えはグラニースミスとその頂点に高接ぎしてある紅玉、赤色矢印は紅の夢。

After the recent rain which lasted several days, the apple leaves were infested with spider mites again.  Notably, I could actually see the spider mites today, so they must have been a different sort from the spider mites that kept coming back since the start of July.  I made another container of spray solution with baking soda.  After more than 30 minutes, I washed the leaves with the shower hose.  I noticed that there were drops of orange liquid on the apple bags, which I had never seen before.  The solution I make consists of baking soda, corn starch (to make it stick), and water.  The colour of the solution is almost transparent with just a hint of white.  So, I presume that the orange colour came from the dead spider mites.

After giving a thorough wash to the apple trees, I decided to remove all the bags.  It was amazingly easy to do.  In the photo below, the pot indicated with the blue arrow contains Granny Smith, and Kogyoku grafted at the top of Granny Smith.  The pot with the red arrow contains Kurenai-no-Yume, a ref-flesh apple variety.

袋の効果は抜群でした。実が一個も落ちることなく清潔に保たれていました。これからは直射日光に当たり、紅玉および紅の夢が色づくことを期待しています。

The bags were very effective in preventing bugs getting in, and the fruits were kept clean and free of sunburn.  From now on, I hope that the skins of Kogyoku and Kurenai-no-Yume will turn red in the full sun.

これは紅玉の枝。実の数は５個にまで減らしてあります。

This is a branch of Kogyoku.  I reduced the number of young fruits to 5 ultimately.

紅玉は開花が一番最後の品種でした。なかなか実が肥大しなかったのに、袋掛けした状態の間に大きくなったようで、現在はグラニースミスとほぼ同じ大きさ。

Kogyoku bloomed last.  Its young fruits struggled to grow in the early stage.  However, they must have grown fast while they were covered with bags, and now, they are about the same size as Granny Smith.

こちらは紅の夢。実の形が今のところ若干の扁平なので区別しやすい。

This is Kurenai-no-Yume.  The shape of the fruits looks like flat peaches, and it is easy to distinguish this cultivar from the other two.

全体的にグラニースミスよりも大きな実になっています。

On the whole, the fruits of Kurenai-no-Yume are larger than those of Granny Smith at the moment.

初収穫でどこまで果肉が赤くなるのか興味津々です。

I am curious to see how red the flesh will become in the first harvest.
