オレンジの開花など Orange flowers etc

 地植えの柚子に高接ぎしたセミノールが開花しました。オレンジの花の香りは柑橘類のなかでも最高です。

Seminole orange flowers are open.  These are branches grafted onto the Yuzu tree growing in the ground.  I love the scent of orange flowers more than any other scent of citrus flowers.

セミノールを接いで３年くらい経っているので、白かった接ぎ木テープが真っ黒になって自然に剥がれてきました。

I grafted these branches about 3 years ago, and the grafting tape has turned from white to black and coming off naturally.

こちら↓はブラッドオレンジのモロ。今度どうしようか、今考えあぐねているところ。狭いスペースで木が大きくなってしまったので、手に負えない状態です。他の果樹の採光への影響や、この木の枝ぶりの管理など、迷っています。一つ言えることは、こんな状態でも沢山の実を提供してくれて、冬の間のビタミンＣ摂取に役立ちました。

This is blood orange, Moro.  The tree has grown out of control, and I have not made up my mind what to do with it.  It is growing in a tiny space, and I have to think of other plants getting enough sunlight.  However, even in this sorry state, the tree provided me with a lot of fruits and vitamin C last winter.  I loved looking at the red fruits on the branches during winter when there were no flowers in the garden.

上のほうの枝がこんなに密集状態ですが、高枝ハサミで間引くのが困難になっています。多分、テレビＣＭで見た電動高枝ノコギリが必要な段階。

The branches at the top have become too dense, but I can hardly reach them with my long pruning shears.  Maybe it is time for me to get the electric pruning saw with which I can reach nearly 3 meters (according to the TV commercial).

タイガが、玄関前の座布団ではなく前に出てきて寝そべっています。散歩の催促をしているよう。

Taiga was lying on the ground, instead of the cushion in front of the door.  I think she was asking for a walk.

ということで、午後の散歩に出ました。今日は城北公園とは反対方向に川沿いを歩きました。

So, we left for an afternoon walk.  This time, we walked along the Shakujii River in the opposite direction to the usual Johoku Park.

２日前の大雨の日は水位がかなり上昇して急流の勢いでしたが、今日はいつもの水準。上から見下ろした印象では水深が20cmも無いのでは、と思うほど浅いです。

Two days ago, we had heavy rain all day, and the water level was really high.  Now, it is the usual, shallow depth of probably less than 20 cm.

洪水のような流れのあとは、まるで川底を掃除したかのように水草さえ無くなっていました。そういえば、この川で魚が泳いでいるのを見たことありません。

After the flood-like flow of 2 days ago, the riverbed was clean as if someone had scraped it, leaving no weeds.  Come to think of it, I have never seen any fish in this stretch of river - too clean for fish to live.

高稲荷神社のふもとにある公園ではノイバラの株が満開でした。昔懐かしい山野草ですが、わざわざ公園に植えてあるのは珍しい。
In the park we passed by, there was a bush of Japanese wild rose in full bloom.  Growing up in the countryside, I used to see this plant in fields and woodlands.  The plant is very tough, and it is used in grafting as the root stock for cultivated rooses in Japan.

しかも大株に育って、１株だけでも存在感があります。

I have never seen such a large bush - in the wild, they are scruffy plants.

近くで見るとけっこう綺麗な花です。

Close up, the blossoms are quite pretty.  They attract honeybees in the wild.

あまり行かない方角の住宅街を歩いていたら、去年の秋に一度だけ会ったワンコと全く同じ場所で会えました。最初、飼い主同士は確信がなかったのですが、ワンコたちはすぐに分かってお互い勢いよく挨拶に近づきました。

When we were walking in a residential area we rarely pass, we saw a dog that we had met once last year.  At first, the humans were not sure, but the dogs recognised each other straightaway and started pulling.  

ポメラニアンミックスの女の子で、ディアリーちゃん、今度の５月８日で４歳になるそうで、12歳になったばかりのタイガとは8歳違いです。

She is a Pomeranian mix, named 'Deary', who was adopted and came with the name.  The owner did not know the meaning in English so, when I explained it to her, she was very pleased.

散歩から帰って満足顔のタイガ。タヌキみたいな顔です。

Back from walk, Taiga was tired but very satisfied.  Her face looks like a racoon's.

午後散歩 Aftrnoon walk

 午後に小竹向原駅へ向かう遊歩道を歩き始めたら、甘い香りが漂ってきました。オガタマの花の季節です。

Just as we were starting to walk the pedestrian path leading to the Kotake Mukaihara Station, I noticed a sweet scent resembling banana smell.  It was coming from Magnolia figo flowers.

遊歩道の脇に垣根として植えられているのですが、

The trees are planted as a hedge along the pedestrian path,

写真右側の垣根がそれで、遊歩道に沿って最初から終わりまでずっと生えています。これまでオガタマは珍しい木だと思っていたのでびっくり。

and they are planted all the way, from start to finish.  I used to think that this tree was a rare plant, but now I can see them any time.

遊歩道の左側の植樹帯にはユリノキがあり、花が咲いていました。

On the left side of the walkway, there were tulip trees in bloom.

大木で枝まで距離があるので、スマホのカメラでズームにしてもまともに撮れませんでした。

The trees were tall and the branches with flowers were too far away for my camera.

帰宅途中、去年の秋に城北公園近くで一度会ったことのあるミーアキャットにばったり。ちゃちゃ丸くん、５歳の男の子。全く物怖じも人見知りもしない子です。ミーアキャットはテレビでアフリカのネイチャープログラムでしか見たことが無かったので、前回あったときは本当にびっくりしました。

On our way home, we met the meerkat that we saw in autumn last year, near the Johoku Park.  His name is Chachamaru, 5 years old.  He is fearless and super friendly to strangers.  I had seen meerkat only in nature programs on TV, so I was really excited when I saw him in the flesh.

ミーアキャットはマングースの仲間だそうで、この独特の猫背がカワイイです。

Belonging to the family of mongoose, this hunched pose is iconic.

おなじみの後ろ足で立ち上がったポーズ。テレビ番組では背伸びして天敵の警戒などをしていましたが、飼い主さんによると、この子は夕日に腹を向けて暖をとっているのだそうです。

This upright pose is so typical of meerkat.  In TV programs, meerkats stood upright in order to stay vigilant against predators.  However, according to his owner, Chachamaru is exposing his belly to the evening sun for warmth.

振り向いた顔の犬歯がすごい。

The long canine teeth are conspicuous.

まとわりつくように寄ってくるのが何ともカワイイです。

The way he clings to me is irresistible.

堂々とアイコンタクトも欠かさない。

He often makes eye contacts, too.

足の上に乗られても全く重さを感じません。

When he climbs on my foot, I feel no weight.

こうやって両腕でしがみつかれると、メロメロ。
Now he is holding on to my leg, and I feel defenseless.

ブラックベリーなど Blackberries etc

 ブラックベリー「ナバホ」の花には毎年ピンクの八重咲きが何輪か出ます。以前あったオセージにも同様のことが見られました。オセージは甘くてフルーティな風味で気に入っていましたが、うちの庭では弱くて消滅してしまいました。その点、ナバホは丈夫。しかも果肉はオセージのよりも肉厚でジューシー。

The blackberry 'Navaho' produces a few double-petaled pink flowers every year.  Likewise, the 'Osage' plant used to have such flowers which were pretty.  Moreover, Osage was sweet and fruity.  However, the variety was not strong growing in my garden, and the plant died out within a few years.  In contrast, Navaho is very tough, and its fruits are more fleshy and juicy than Osage's.

まだ咲き始めたばかりなので、花は疎らです。

The plant has just started to bloom, and the flowers will be abundant soon.

バラのハンザも咲き始めました。ハンザ苗は３本あり、他の２本はナバホの両脇に地植えになっています。

Hansa rose has also started to bloom.  I have 3 Hansa plants, with the other two growing on either side of Navaho.

強香で、日が昇ったあとも香りが飛んでしまうことはありません。ブルガリアで香水用に栽培されているカザンリクの香りはデリケートで、早朝のうちに摘んでしまわなければならないそうです。

これは開花中の２輪のうち上の花。

Hansa's scent is strong, and I do not have to worry about the flower being exposed to the sun and lose the scent.  In contrast, the scent of Kazanlik, the variety grown in Bulgaria for the perfume industry, is quite delicate and petals have to be picked before the sun is high up.

日南の姫の回復 Tangerine recovering

 今日は一日を通して雨。午後から夕方にかけて雷を伴う激しい雨になりました。久しぶりに植物の世話を全くしなくても良い日でした。

It rained all day today.  In the afternoon, heavy rain was accompanied by a series of lightning and thunder.  The weather gave me a break from gardening for a change.

暖かい恵みの雨のなか、去年の夏にバルコニーで枯死寸前までいったミカン「日南の姫」の葉っぱが展開しています。うちのバルコニーは真夏に灼熱の砂漠になるので、これまでいくつかの果樹がカリカリになって、急遽 庭に避難させたことがあります。

Thanks to the warm nurturing rain, the tangerine plant that nearly died on the balcony started to show signs of recovery with new leaves growing.  My balcony in the summer becomes like a desert with scorching sun, and I have had several fruit trees nearly dying.

濃い緑色の葉っぱは去年から生き残ったもので、浅緑色のはここ２，３日の芽吹き。雨のおかげで、あっという間に葉が拡大。

The dark leaves are those that grew in autumn last year, after the tree was brought downstairs.  The light green leaves are from recent new buds, now expanding in the warm rain.

苗が生命の危機を感じてか、花がたくさん着いています。タイガの散歩に横を通ったとき、雨の中でも良い香りが漂ってきました。
The plant probably sensed the risk of death and now it is trying to ensure its legacy by producing fruits/seeds, thus lots of flowers on such a small tree.  A beautiful scent from the flowers reached me even in the heavy rain, when I passed by to take Taiga out for a walk.

コーネリアンチェリー・パイオニア Cornelian cherry 'Pioneer'

 おととい注文した苗が今日の午後２時-４時の時間帯に配達される予告を受けたので、午前中に鹿沼土と花の用土を買いに近所のJAへ行きました。ついでにミニトマト苗とベゴニアをゲット。

The cornelian cherry plant that I ordered two days ago was expected to arrive between 2-4 o'clock this afternoon.  So, I went to the nearby JA to get the two kinds of soil I always use.  Since I was there, I also got a cherry tomato plant and a pot of begonia.

リーガーベゴニアの仲間で、開花期間がとても長いそうです。

This is one of the Rieger begonias, whose flowering periods are said to be extremely long.

私はベゴニア苗を今まで買ったことが無かったのですが、鉢増しするために元の鉢から出してみてビックリ。苗は数本のプラスチック支柱でサポートされてこぢんまりした外観になっていたことが分かりました。それを鉢から出したとたん、数本の茎があちこちの方角に倒れ始めて収集がつかないほど。何とか大きな鉢に詰め込んだあと、付属の支柱を全部使って茎を支えましたが、だいぶ開帳型に変身しました。急に苗が大きく立派になりました。

I have never had a begonia plant before, not even the primitive type with tiny flowers.  When I took the plant out of the original pot, I was surprised to see that the stems had been supported by several plastic sticks, which made the whole plant look compact.  So, the moment I held the root system in my hand, the large stems began to part from each other.  I somehow managed to repot the plant in a larger pot, with the plant looking much more open.  It looked as if it had grown large in an instant.

ずっと眺めているうちに愛着がわいてきました。ワクワクしながらこの苗を眺めていると、午後に配達予定のコーネリアンチェリー苗を余裕で待つことができました。

As I kept looking at the plant, I began to like it more and more.  In this happy state, I was able to wait for the arrival of the cornelian cherry plant without getting impatient.

午後になって、その苗が届きました。コーネリアンチェリーの「パイオニア」で、入手できるとは思ってもいなかった品種です。そもそも、20年くらい前にコーネリアンチェリーが巧みなマーケティングで人気になったものの、あっという間に注目されなくなり、苗の販売業者はコーネリアンチェリーから撤退の一途を辿ったという印象です。現在、かろうじて「ショリコ」などを載せているショップはありますが、大実のパイオニアはどこも在庫なしです。それが偶然、セールで販売されているのを見て迷わず注文しました。既に育てている「カザンラク」は自家結実する品種ですが、他品種もあれば安心です。パイオニアはカザンラクほどではないけど大実で、海外のサイトによると、完熟すると種を取り出しやすくなるとのことです。一方、トルコ産のコーネリアンチェリーのジャムは種が入ったままの実だそうで（それではコンポートと言ったほうが正確）、よほど粘核性なのがうかがえます。それが、種を取り出しやすいというなら、本当のジャムを作れるはずです。

In the afternoon, the plant was delivered.  This is 'Pioneer', the variety that seemed impossible to obtain.  More than 15 years ago, plant sellers introduced cornelian cherries into Japan with clever marketing.  A lot of gardeners jumped at the opportunity to get these trees.  However, the popularity disappeared just as quickly as it was created.  Since then, shops have been fast getting out of cornelian cherries, and only one or two varieties such as Jolico are still left in stock.  As to Pioneer, it has completely disappeared, since it was one of the popular varieties for the larger fruits.  However, to my great surprise, I happened to see Pioneer on sale, and I immediately placed an order.  Now, the fruits of Pioneer may not be as large as those of Kazanlak, but, according to an overseas site, the stone comes off easily when the fruit is fully ripe.  This, to me, is a great advantage.  Without stones, I would be able to make really nice jam or smoothy.

これがその苗。小さく見えても、セールで800円だったので、苗の希少性も考慮すると、私にはエクセレントバリューに思えます。

This is the plant.  It may look small but, considering it was priced only 800 yen on sale and the near impossibility to get this variety now, it represents an excellent value to me.

10号ロングスリット鉢に植え付けました。
I planted it in a 30cm diameter pot with slits at the bottom for good drainage.

こちら↓は２年前に買ったカザンラク。この秋までに、来年用の蕾を是非見たいものです。

This is Kazanlak that I bought 2 years ago.  I would love to find flower buds for next year, by the end of this summer.

新苗を植え付けてすっかり安心。ジッとガマンで待っていたタイガと公園へ行きました。

Having planted the new tree, I felt relieved and took Taiga to the park, feeling grateful for her patience.

散々歩き回ったあと、公園出口の広場でタイガが座り込み。散歩を待たされた分、ワガママを通せると感知しているようです。

After ambling through the park, we came to the field near the exit.  It seems Taiga had a sense of entitlement for having waited long for the afternoon walk, and she sat down refusing to go home yet.

急にスリゴロまで始めました。

She even started rolling over the grass.
