雪？ What snow?

 昨日、夕方から深夜にかけて雪が降るという予報でした。午後には確かに湿った雪が降り出していました。写真は、うちから坂を下りて行ったところの道。急いでタイガの午後散歩を済ませました。夜、寝る前の散歩時には、庭は白かったけど道には雪はなし。

Yesterday, they were forecasting that it would start snowing in the early afternoon, followed by a heavier snow fall overnight.  The photo below was taken when we went out for an early afternoon walk - it was just starting to snow.  When we went out before going to bed, my garden was covered with snow, but not the road.

帰宅して、雪に埋もれないように、棗の発芽したものを室内に取り込み。去年の11月に、日本棗のひこばえ3本を鉢上げしましたが、そのうちの一つにダメ元で種を1個埋めてみました。それが、今年の2月末にはバルコニーで発芽していたのです。棗は核の状態にすれば低温要求は無くなると、海外のYoutuberが言っていましたが、外でもこんなに早く発芽するとは。発芽苗をひこばえの鉢から掘り出したら根っこが8cmくらいもあったので、高さ18cmのビニールポットに植え付けました。

After coming home, I took in the newly germinated jujube bud so that it would not be damaged by snow.  When I potted 3 suckers of my Japanese jujube in November last year, I buried a seed in one of the pots just as an experiment.  To my amazement, I found the seed had already germinated by the end of February this year.  I had heard from a Youtuber that, by removing the hard shell, the seed would not need cold stratification.  The root was already 8cm long, so I planted it in an 18cm tall pot.

今はまだ双葉の状態ですが、ルーペを使って目を凝らすと、針の頭ほどの本葉が見えてきます。

In the photo, you can only see the seed leaves but, with a magnifying glass, I can see the head of trunk leaf trying to come out.

雪のほうはというと、今朝の散歩の時間には既にほぼ溶けていました。

As to the snow, it had almost all melted by the time we went out for our morning walk.

スモモに高接ぎしてある南高梅が雪で終わりそう。でも、普通に咲いていたときより、このほうが可愛げがあります。

My Ume blossoms were almost over after the snow.  Although looking beaten, they looked sweeter than they did a few days ago.

午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 今日は防寒着なしで長い散歩に出られるほど暖かかったので、午後の3時過ぎに出かけました。うちの３丁目の隣は６丁目、そこを突き抜けてさらに歩くと、あまり詳しくない５丁目。タイガのリーダーシップウォークに従って歩いているうちに、もう石神井川がどの方向かもわからなくなりました。（どんなに道に迷っても石神井川まで出れば帰ってこれるので、心の磁石です。）不安の中で歩いているうちに、川津桜が咲き始めた家がありました。家のすぐ横で、木が大きくなり過ぎないよう、わざと普通の剪定をせずヒョロヒョロ樹形にしている印象です。その効果で、川津桜にしては繊細な美しさがあります。家が近ければ満開のタイミングでもう一度見に来たいけど、道順が分からないし、遠い。

It was warm enough to go for a long walk without a winter coat, so we left home after 3 p.m.  We live in 3-chome, and the next-door district is 6-chome, and beyond that is 5-chome where I often lose my bearings.  As I followed Taiga, I completely lost the direction of Shakujii River.  (Even if I am in 5-chome, as long as I can find the way to Shakujii River, I know how to get home.)  As I was walking anxiously, I came across a house with Kawazu cherry blossom tree already starting to bloom.  The tree growing right next to a house, it seems they chose not to do the usual pruning.  Instead, they seem to be allowing the tree to become lanky.  The growth habit of this tree gives it a delicate look which is unusual for Kawazu sakura.  I would love to see this tree again when it is in full bloom, but this place is far away from my home, and I wouldn't know how to find the way again - Taiga's whim brought me here today.

さらにテクテク歩いているうちに、以前見たことのある変わった建物がありました。2, 3年前、夜の散歩で数回ここを通り過ぎたこことがあります。今日は明るい時間帯なので、入口に近づいてみました。どうやら商業施設で、いろんな形態の店が入っているようです。

After continuing to walk some distance, we came to a building which I recognised from a few years ago.  We passed by this place during our night walk.  Looking at the place in the daylight, it is a commercial building with several shops.

各ユニットに振られた番号を見ると、「４」が抜けているのは運が悪いから？

The shops are numbered but '4' is missing - some people still think it bad luck to use for rooms.

店舗を紹介したパネルに見入っていたら、ついさっき出くわした初対面のワンコが追い付いてきました。４歳半のミックス犬で、名前は風太君。

As I was looking at the panel, the dog we briefly met on our way here caught up with us - a new face named Futa, aged 4 1/2 years old.

タイガは「さっき、私に吠えたくせに」と言わんばかりの態度。

Taiga was reserved as if to say, "You barked at me earlier.  What do you want now?"

で、建物の外観はこんな感じ。ここは住宅街で夜の明かりが少なく良く見えないので、以前はしゃれたアパートかと思っていました。でも、風太君の飼い主さんによると、３年前くらいにできた新しい商業施設だそうです。

The building looks like this.  This is a residential area and, when we passed by at night, I couldn't see well and thought it was an apartment building.  However, according to Futa's dad, this was built about 3 years ago as a commercial place.

建物の前にあるこのパネルは非常に分かり易く、手作り感満載。しかも、もし店舗の入れ替わりがあったらパソコンで簡単に修正して、差し替えすれば済みそう。

The panel I was looking at stands in front of the building, and it looks a very friendly way to introduce the tenants - it looks handmade.  If there is any change of tenants, you can easily update it on the PC and swap the sheet with the new one.

夜に通ると一階のこのユニットに明かりがついていて、外のテーブルにお客さんがいた記憶があります。

When I passed by at night, the lights of this unit on the ground floor were on, with customers at the table outside.

いったん現在地が分かると、我が家を目指して歩き出せます。帰宅途中に横を通った温泉施設の裏ではピンクの花梅が満開でした。

Once I see a place that I recognise from the past, I can head home with confidence.  On our way home, we passed by the hot spring place, where there was a flowering Ume tree in full bloom.

さっきの川津桜の可憐さとは対照的です。

So dense and gaudy - such a contrast with the Kawazu sakura we saw earlier.

その温泉の入口。練馬区では有名な温泉で、遠くから自転車に乗ってでも通ってくる固定客がいるほどだそうです。（私は越して来て30年ちかく、一度も試したことありませんが。）

This is the entrance to the hot spring.  This place is quite famous in our Nerima-ku, and there are a lot of steady customers who are willing to get here on bicycles if they live far away.  (I do not like public baths or swimming pools.)

夕方散歩 Evening Walk

 寒波の後のこの暖かさは有難いです。タイガにとっても同じなのか散歩が長続きするよう、夕方は小竹向原駅へと続く遊歩道を歩きたがります。城北公園へ行くより遥かに疲れます。でも、名前を呼んでも写真撮影には協力してくれません。

I am loving this warm weather after having been hit by the second cold wave, which affected my health.  Taiga also seems to enjoy the warmth, although dogs are supposed to prefer cooler weather.  She is now in the habit of taking the route to the Kotake-Mukaihara Station, for the evening walk.  It means a much longer walk than going to Johoku Park, and a lot more exhausting for a convalescent like me.  Even so, she has no intention of co-operating with me for a photo shoot - a side eye is the best she can give me.

この道は梅の木がたくさん植わっていて、今が開花ピークのようです。

On this walkway, there are many Ume trees, and they seem to be at the peak of flowering now.

見通しが良いところでは、まるで桜の開花シーズンのよう。

At some points, the view reminds me of a cherry blossom season.

で、今来た道を振り返ると、こう。メジロやヒヨなど野鳥を眺めながらゆっくり歩くと、非常にリラックスできます。

Looking back the way we have just come.  Walking leisurely, watching the wild birds, such as the White Eye, it is very relaxing.

タイガは他のワンコが残していった臭い嗅ぎに夢中。赤い犬と赤いタイル。

Taiga was more interested in picking up the scent left by other dogs.  A red dog walking alongside the red tiles.

帰り道、環七を渡って練馬区に戻ると近所の仲良し達と会えました。３歳の大柄なポメの男の子と、トイプーのモモちゃん。

Back in our familiar neighbourhood, we met friendly faces.  A 3 years old, large Pomeranian boy, and a Toy Poodle girl named Momo.

Momo and Ponyo.  Momo was not interested in greeting Taiga but was excited to see me.

CSIの番組で見たことを思い出して帰宅後に写真を最大限拡大してみたら、モモちゃんの目の中に私が写り込んでいました。（ドラマでは犯人が写り込んでいた）

I once saw in a CSI drama where they caught the sight of the perpetrator by enlarging the photo of the victim.  After coming home, I tried the same and found that I was in Momo's eyes, too.

この子はナゾのミックス犬男の子で、シンちゃん。長い脚と顔の両脇の長い毛はサルーキの血を思わせます。
This boy is a mysterious individual, named Shin.  His long legs and the long hair at the sides of his face suggest to me that he might have a drop of Saluki blood.

棗、ひと月後 Jujubes, one month on

 1月31日以降、棗苗が徐々に動き出しています。写真の手前の苗は「早脆王棗」の現在。背後の左は「無核金糸棗」、右は「蟠棗」。（写真を撮った時間は、朝日が部屋に段々差し込んでくるタイミングだったので、葉っぱが黄色く見えます。）

Since the last posting on January 31st, the jujube plants have been making progress very slowly.  The tree in front is Early Crisp King jujube.  In the back, the one on the left is Seedless Golden Thread jujube, and on the right is Panzao.  (I took these pictures in early morning just as the sun was coming into the room - thus, the yellowish colour of new buds.)

これは先月末にトップを切って動き出した早脆王の芽。上から３番目の節。恒常的な枝になりそうな太い芽には既に樹皮の斑点が出ています。

This is the bud of Early Crisp King that started growing first, at the end of January.  It is the 3rd node from the top.  Some of the new shoots are large enough already and I can see spots of bark on permanent branches.

これ↓は先月の31日の状態。寒い季節なのでゆっくり育ちました。

This is the same bud as it looked on January 31st.  It being winter, the bud has been growing very slowly.

これ↓は２番目に動き出した芽で、上から２番目の節。

This is the bud that followed the above one, and it is the 2nd node from the top.

これは上から４番目の節。

This is the 4th node from the top.

この苗が届いたときに根っこが大量についていたので、それが影響していると思います。

When the bareroot plants were delivered, this tree had abundant roots.  Perhaps that has contributed to its early growing?

こちらは無核金糸棗。早脆王は芽が一個ずつ動き出したのに対し、この苗は木全体が動き出しています。ただし、未だ初期なので写真にとって分かりそうなものだけ掲載。

This is the Seedless Silk Thread jujube.  Whereas the Early Crisp King's buds started to come out one by one, the nodes on this plant are starting to grow almost all in concert.  However, it being still at an early stage, I have taken photos of only 'visible' ones in pictures.

この苗が届いたとき、細根がきれいに取り除かれていたのでショックでしたが、その状態から回復しつつあるということでしょうか。苗の地上部の外観では、この苗は接ぎ木部分から天辺まで綺麗な緑色で、３本のなかで一番健康そうな苗でした。

When this plant was delivered, the fine roots had been meticulously removed, which shocked me a lot.  Perhaps, new white fine roots are coming out now, for the buds to be growing?   At any rate, this plant looked the healthiest of the 3, with beautiful green bark from the fusion point to the top of the tree.

こちらは蟠棗。もっとも遅れて最近動き出しました。届いたときの根っこの量は悪くなかったのに、あまりにも変化が見られなかったので心配し始めていたところ。

This is Panzao.  The last one to start moving.  When the plant was delivered, the amount of roots looked not bad for an imported tree.  However, until recently, it showed no sign of budding, and I was getting anxious.

週末は暖かい予報なので、日中、ベランダで日光浴させる予定です。新芽を野鳥に食べられないか心配ですが。。。

The weather is forecast to be warm during this weekend, and I am planning to put them out into the direct sunlight for a few hours at midday.  I hope wild birds will not pick on the fresh buds.
