公園で At the park

 午後にタイガのシャンプーをしたので、自然乾燥の旅で公園へ向かいました。中央公園手前の草地に着くと、小さな柴犬がブラッシングされているところでした。リキ君、10歳だそうです。

I gave Taiga a thorough shampoo this afternoon and went out for drying in the natural air since the weather was dry and warm.  At the park, we saw Riki, a 10-year old male Shiba Inu, being brushed by his mom.

笑顔がカワイイ。

He has such a sweet smile.

その後、中央公園を歩いていると、久しぶりに白柴のおもちちゃんと会えました。

As we were walking further, I saw Omochi, a female Shiba Inu, coming down the stairs.  We had not seen her since spring this year.

おもちちゃんが近づいて来るのに、タイガの関心は他の子に。

初めて見かけるボーダーコリーっぽい子。ボーダーとは思えないほど、おどおど尻尾を丸めて去っていきました。

A new face - he looked like a Border Collie.  However, he was extremely timid and left in a hurry with his tail tucked between his legs.

でも、横の草地では伸び伸びと草風呂を楽しんでいました。最後に会ったのは未だ春だった記憶で、その頃は具合が良くなかったのですが、今日は別ワンコのようです。医者に見せたところ甲状腺に関わる問題があったそうで、今は薬ですっかり元気。以前は毛の生え具合も不調で、ところどころ地肌が見えるくらいでしたが、今日のおもちちゃんのコートはびっしり。なにより目つきがイキイキしています。

Omochi started enjoying herself on the grass nearby.  The last time we met her, she had been suffering some sort of skin discomfort, with patches of pink skin exposed in several places.  Looking at her depressed demeanour then, it seemed there was something fundamentally wrong with her.  After consulting with the doctor, she has been on a medication and now she is very vivacious with bright eyes, and her coat is perfectly thick and white just like her namesake, mochi (rice cake).

自分からタイガを遊びに誘ってきました。以前なら、顔なじみのワンコたちと集まっても一人じっと動かなかったのがうそのようです。医療は素晴らしい。

Omochi started a chase, inviting Taiga to join in.  Some months ago, in her depressed state, she tended to sit apart from the group of dogs who were in her circle of friends.  It is so nice to see her old happy self.

タイガよりも４、５歳くらい若いはずですが、こうやって遊ぶ姿はコロナのロックダウン前を思い出させるほど元気です。

Omochi is 4-5 years younger than Taiga, but now the way they play with each other brings back the memories of pre-Covid days.

公園を散々歩いたあと、我が家のすぐ近くまでくると、近所のリアちゃんとばったり。私のズボンには公園で出会ったいろんなワンコの臭いがついているので、鼻を押し付けるようにクンクン。なんだか浮気チェックされているような気分。

After leaving the park and when we were nearly home, we met Leah, the female German Pinscher of my neighbour.  Since I had interacted with several dogs in the park, she started smelling my trousers.  It was as if she was checking to see if I had been unfaithful.

リアちゃんはジャーマンピンシャーの女の子で、まだ２歳くらいのはずですが、しばらく見ないうちに急に厚みが出てたくましくなっていました。大きさもドーベルマンピンシャーの小柄な女の子と言われても違和感ないくらいです。

Leah is still about 2 years old, but she had put on some weight since I saw her last.  If someone told me that she was a smallish Dobermann Pinscher, I would easily believe it.

自分のほう偉いと言いたげに、タイガのマズルの上に自分の顔を乗せようとしています。

As if to say that she ranked above Taiga, Lear started to put her head over Taiga's muzzle.

タイガは犬の間で順位を気にしないたちなので、リアちゃんに一種のマウントされても怒りません。

Taiga has never bothered about ranking among dogs, so she does not get upset even when Leah places her head over Taiga's whole face.

散歩など Morning Walk etc

 今朝は曇りで肌寒いくらいの公園散歩でした。タイガにとって過ごしやすい気温なので、刈られた草の上でスリゴロ。

It was almost chilly this morning as we walked in the park.  For Taiga, it was an ideal weather and she enjoyed rolling on the grass.

ピンと伸ばした脚が、海外ドラマで見た羊の脚のローストを連想させます。

Her stretched out hind leg reminds me of a roasted leg of lamb that I saw in an overseas drama.

ガバッと起きる。聞こえた？

散々歩いたので、帰ろう。

うちの北側通路にあるヒガンバナが咲いていました。家の前に植わっているのよりも早い。

The spider lilies I planted last year at the side of my house is in full bloom, ahead of those in front of the porch.

もう涼しい気候でグリーンカーテンは必要なくなったので、バルコニーのサツマイモを収穫しようとしました。なぜ素直に「収穫した」ではないかと言うと、食べられるイモが1個も無かったからです。イモの数が少ないのはもとより、全てのイモがアナボコだらけ（写真の黒い染みのような部分は、齧られた穴に湿った土が詰まっている状態）。土の中からイモを掘り出そうとすると、コガネ幼虫がザックザク出てきました。えー、サツマイモってコガネ幼虫に狙われるの？とびっくり。果樹の鉢植えなら、毎年初夏にカルホスを撒いて効果的に予防していますが、まさかサツマイモに？
Since I no longer need the 'green curtain' in this cool weather, I decided to harvest the sweet potatoes - or I tried to.  As it happened, there was not a single potato that seemed edible.  Every one of them had holes bored by beetle larvae.  The potato vines have been growing in a large bag, and the soil this afternoon was full of these larvae.  Uh!  Absolutely disgusting creatures to look at.  In the photo below, the dark spots that look like stains are holes filled with moist soil.  Every early-summer, I give lime-based powder to potted plants in order to prevent beetles from laying eggs, but I never thought that beetle larvae would feed on potatoes.

なんともおぞましい結果です。土はリサイクルするために庭の一箇所に山盛りにして、芋をすべて漉き込みました。苦土石灰を切らしていたので、数年前に買ってから未使用だった木酢液３本（３リットル）を全て土に注ぎ込んで、カルホスもバラまいて耕したので、消毒はできたと思います。来年の春には使える土になっているはず。

The potatoes may be inedible but at least they can be tilled into the soil for recycling.  I sprinkled 3 litres of acid extracted from smoked bamboos, as well as the lime-based powder.  The soil should be ready for re-use in spring next year, after being exposed to the elements through the winter.

YouTubeで見たイモチップスを作ってタイガのオヤツにする夢は砕かれました。ハア😔

What a pity.  I had learned on the YouTube how to make sweet potato chips which I was going to give to Taiga.😔

午後散歩 Afternoon Walk

 2階バルコニーで洗濯物を取り込んだりして階段を上り下りしていたら、タイガが目ヂカラで静かに圧をかけていました。鼻を鳴らすなどせずに、いつも無言です。

As I was passing through the porch area a few times in order to do things upstairs and downstairs, I felt a silent pressure coming from Taiga who was getting bored.  She never makes a whining sound or bark but her message comes through.

しょうがないので、今日は１回追加の散歩。いつもは早朝と夕方に１時間ほどの散歩、プラス午後１時頃に近所を歩いてオシッコ散歩です。昨夜の雨のあと、午後にかけて太陽が出ましたが、風は台風のような生暖かい風。

Since the sky cleared after it rained all night, I took her out for an extra walk.  (Normally, she gets an hour's walk each in the morning and evening, and a short pee walk at about 1 p.m. and at midnight.)  

以前から確かめたかった件があるので、そちらへ向かいます。

We walked towards a place where I had wanting to visit for some time.

昔は民家があったところが今は駐車場になっていて、その奥に植わっているリンゴの木です。

There is a parking lot where a house used to stand.  At the back, among other tall trees, there is an apple tree.

この暑い練馬区で、もう誰にも世話してもらえない状態、かつ右側に写り込んでいる南側の家の陰になりながら、毎年リンゴの実がついているのが気になっていました。猛暑の間はここまでは来ないので、今の状態を見てみたかったのです。もうほとんど落果していて、残り少ない。

This apple tree has been growing there in spite of extremely hot summers in Tokyo, and without being properly cared for as a fruit bearing tree.  Nevertheless, a lot of apples grow on it every year.  I wanted to see how the fruits were this time of the year, since I never come this far when it is too hot.  As it happened, most of them had already fallen to the ground with no-one to harvest them.

今ある樹上の実も地面に落ちて腐っているものも果皮は緑色なのと、実の形が扁平なのとで、たぶん料理用のリンゴのようです。地面のリンゴからは甘酸っぱい臭いが漂ってきていました。カツカツの土で他の樹木と押し合いながらの過酷な環境でも頑張っています。

Based on the fact that all the fruits, be they on the tree or on the ground, were green, as well as the fact that the shape of the fruits were flat, I think they are cooking apples.  This variety must be very tough for the tree to survive in this harsh condition with hard soil and being surrounded by other trees.

帰りはJAを覗いてみようと向かっていたら、タイガが突然止まりました。横の露地にノラ猫の姿。

On our way home, Taiga suddenly froze - she had spotted a cat in a side alley.

口の周りの形から、オスだと思います。遠くからすごい迫力で唸っていました。

With round cheeks, I think it is a male feral cat.  He had a menacing aura and growling even from the distance.

JAの駐車場入り口にタイガを括り付けて、展示物を見てまわりました。果樹コーナーで見かけたアルプス乙女。秋らしい商品。

At the entrance of the parking lot of the JA (farmers' co-op), I left Taiga tied to a metal pole.  In the fruit tree section, I saw a type of crab apple tree called 'Alps Otome' which is a very popular variety in Japan for its compact growth habit.

いったい栽培者はどんな肥料をやって、こんなに美しい苗を作り出すのでしょうか？どの実も惚れ惚れするくらい綺麗です。うっとり見入ってしまいますが、ガマン、ガマン。今度の冬にはご近所からアルプスの枝をもらえるので、それをうちの「紅の夢」に高接ぎする予定です。

It always makes me wonder how the grower manages to make potted plants like these.  The fruits are perfectly beautiful.  I had to resist the temptation to get the plant.  However, a neighbour of mine has promised to give me a scion of this variety in winter, which I intend to graft onto one of my trees.

花のコーナーでは、クルクマが700円台で売られていました。綺麗ですが、世話が大変そうなので葛藤なくスルー。

There were also some flowers that I like but they are not easy to look after during winter months.

サンパラソルも、今は綺麗でも冬の管理が不安なのでスルーです。

手ぶらでタイガの元へ帰ります。決して声を出したりせずに静かに待っています。

I returned to Taiga with no purchases.  She always waits for me patiently and quietly.

オヤツを期待してか、近づいたら笑顔になりました。ウンチ袋を吊るしておくことで、通りがかる人には捨て犬ではないことが分かると思います。

She began to smile as I approached her, probably expecting a treat?  By leaving my bags on the pole, people passing by can tell that she is not an abandoned dog.
