公園で At the park

 夕飯の支度をしようとしていたら、ふとタイガの視線を感じました。タイガは台所は立ち入り禁止になっているので、廊下から無言で「さんぽ」を訴えかけています。昨日の夜から今日の午前中まで雨だったので、運動不足気味かも。

As I was thinking of what to prepare for supper, I felt Taiga's eyes on my back.  She is not allowed to come into the kitchen so she was watching me from just outside, trying to tell me that she wanted to go for a walk.  It rained last night and during this morning, so she was short of exercise.

夕飯の材料をだいたい決めてから散歩に出ました。柿の木広場に着くと、ベルギーの犬が３頭いました。

まずはタイガの大好きなルイ君。タービュレンで、タイガよりも１歳若い幼馴染です。

Having decided the ingredients for supper, we went out for an evening walk.  On arriving at the Persimmon Park, we saw 3 Belgian dogs.

This is Louis, Taiga's boyfriend since they were puppies.  He is one year younger than Taiga so he must be 10 years old now.

他の２頭はグローネンダールの女の子。そのうちの１歳半の若い子がタイガにちょっかいをかけたくてウズウズしています。

The other two were female Groenendaels.  One of them, aged 1 1/2 years old, was itching to play with Taiga.

鼻にかすり傷があります。飼い主さんによると、猛スピードで走っているうちに木に衝突して擦りむいたそうです。

She has a scar on her nose, having run into a tree at a great speed.

この子は一緒に飼われている、もっと大人の女の子で落ち着いていますが、タイガよりは若い。

The other girl was much quieter but she is a few years younger than Taiga.

グローネンの幼いほうがタイガを挑発して追いかけっこが始まりました。私は本能的にタイガにカメラの焦点を合わせてしまうので、遥かに高速で走るグローネンの子がピンボケに写ります。

The younger Groenendael provokes Taiga into playing.  I instinctively follow Taiga with my camera and the Groenendael running at a much faster speed tends to be blurred.

満11歳のタイガが疲れて休んでいても、グローネンが獲物を狙うようにタイガの周りをグルグル回っています。

Taiga at 11 years old has to stop from time to time but the younger dog circles around her like watching a prey.

ルイ君を巻き込むようにぶつかってきました。

She now wants to pull Louis into the game, too.

ルイ君はおもちゃを口からぶら下げたままで走っています。顔に当たって痛くないのかと、人間たちは笑っていました。

日本ナツメなど Japanese jujube etc

 日本ナツメに1輪だけ開花が見られました。たったの１輪でも、顔を近づけると良い香り。私にとって５月の3大芳香は、開花の順に、シナノキ（科の木）、スイカズラ、ナツメです。海外の情報によると、ナツメは7月以降の高温の時期に開花したものが着果につながるとのことです。これは私自身、痛感しています。５-6月の開花からの幼果はほぼ全て落ちて、７月以降の2度目の開花で実がとどまるというのが、練馬区の気候での経験です。

I found a flower this morning on the Japanese jujube tree.  Although it is only one flower, the scent is really good.  For me, this is one of the 3 fragrant flowers of May, together with Japanese linden and honeysuckle.  

According to the information I picked up overseas, flowers opening during the hot climate of July-August have a better chance of fruit setting, whereas young fruits from May-June flowering tend to fall off.  From my experience, I agree totally with this.

この苗は今年の３月に練馬の園芸店で買った小苗ですが、主幹が25cm以上伸びてきました。数苗棚に並んでいたうち、この苗は根元がグラグラしていましたが、最も樹姿が真っ直ぐだったので選びました。帰宅して鉢から出してみると、予想どおり、棚に並べる直前にその鉢に植え付けたばかりの根っこで土が全部落ちてきました。よって、迷うことなく10号鉢に植え替えることができました。

I bought this small plant in March this year at a shop near the Nerima Ward Office.  Already, the plant is more than 25 cm taller than originally and has lots of flower buds.  Among the several jujube plants on the shelf I saw that day, this one was unstable at the base, which I suspected was because it had been put into that pot just before being placed on the shelf.  However, I chose this for its straight tree trunk.  When I came home, I took it out of the pot and confirmed that the roots did not hold the soil in the pot.  So, I replanted it in a much larger, 30 cm pot and it has been doing well.

 

去年の春に買ったコーネリアンチェリーのカザンラクは順調に育っています。鉢植え管理で実を着けさせたいので、枝は短く切っています。園芸店で見かける日本のサンシュユは、直径15cmほどの鉢で、しかも土はカチカチ。その厳しい環境では枝を短く剪定・維持して開花させるのは容易に見えますが、10号鉢と十分な肥料だと、どうしても枝が伸び伸びになります。

The Cornus mas "Kazanlak" that I bought in spring last year is doing well. Since I want to grow this plant in a pot, I keep the branches short and close to the centre of the tree.  However, with a large pot and plenty of fertiliser, the tree is too vigorous to be kept small.

ナツメ同様、虫が着かず健康そうな葉っぱです。花芽の分化は７月頃だそうで、その近辺では水やりを控えると花芽の分化が起きやすい、という内容の記事を読んだことがあります。なので、６月の梅雨どきは屋内にひっこめるかも。

As with the jujube plant, this tree is free of harmful bugs.  According to the information on the internet, flower buds for next year will start to form in July, and watering should be kept to the minimum around that time.  Now, our rainy season lasts from late May to early July.  Therefore, I may pull the plant indoors to avoid excessive watering during that period.

公園で At the park

 今日は防災訓練の日らしく、四中横の草地に着くと駐車場状態でした。

When we arrived at the field just before the Johoku Central Park, we saw that it was being used as the parking place for some event.

川の向こうの城北中央公園では式典の準備が進んでいて、いつもの入口の広場がテントと人だらけ。

We crossed the river to arrive at the Central Park.  The field at the entrance was being used for fire and flood emergency drill.

案内役の人によると一般人が観察できるそうですが、広場を横目に川沿いの道を行きました。

One of the guides told me that general public was welcome to watch the event, but we moved on walking the side path along the river.

その川沿いの道には、光が丘や石神井など、同じ練馬区の他の地域から来た消防団の車両がびっしり。こんなに小さい消防車？　普通のバンの大きさです。

The side path was lined with fire engines from various districts of our Nerima Ward.  I have never seen such tiny fire engines.

遠回りをして、いつもの林から入口広場を眺めたところ。

We entered the usual wooded area from the back, looking at the entrance field.

頭上の新緑の天井。林の中は涼しい風が吹いていて、いかにも５月です。

Above our heads, the green ceiling.  There was a cool breeze in the woods.  May is such a beautiful season.

近所のレオン君。中学生のお姉ちゃんとお父さんが一緒です。

We met Leon, a male Toy Poodle of my neighbour.  He was with his big sister, a Junior High School student, and his dad.

久しぶりに会うケアンテリアのチャンプ。

There came Champ, a male Cairn Terrier, whom we had not seen for months.

幼馴染はいつまでも仲良しです。

They used to play together as puppies.

レインコート Raincoat button solution

 だいぶ前に撮ったビデオを今やっと編集しました。タイガの雨合羽がきつめで、ちょっと歩くだけでも外れていたので使い物になりませんでしたが、その解決策をみつけました。

This video was taken some time ago but I did not get around to editing it until now.  Taiga's raincoat is a bit tight at the chest and the buttons kept coming off the moment she walked a few steps.  However, I found a solution to this.

リンゴ幼果 Young apple fruits

 昨日までの雨で庭の植物がけっこう育ちました。赤肉リンゴの「紅の夢」は幼果の段階から果皮が赤くなるのか、陽光面がかなり色づいています。大きさは、私の人差し指の頭よりもだいぶ大きく育っています。夕日の当たり加減で見づらいですが。

After the rains that lasted until yesterday, the young apple fruits have grown a little more.  This is the red-flesh variety called "Kurenai-no-yume".  It seems that the skin turns red even the fruit is very young (the colour looks a little odd due to the evening light).

ガクがぴったり閉じるとリンゴらしい外観になります。

When the sepals close completely, the young fruit really looks like an apple.

こちらは一足先に開花したグラニースミス。実の重みで少しずつ垂れ始めています。何とか両方とも収穫まで行ってほしいです。

This is the Granny Smith that flowered ahead of Kurenai-no-yume.  I do hope that both of these will mature ready for harvesting.

冬の間に紅玉を高接ぎしたものが、雨のたびに伸びています。これはグラニースミスに接いだ枝。

こちらは紅の夢に接いだもの。この枝はそのうち取り除いて、今度の冬にご近所からいただける予定のアルプス乙女を接ごうと思います。紅玉は紅の夢の片親だそうなので、アルプスのほうが遺伝子が重ならなくて安心です。実際、今年の開花でアルプスの花粉を使いました。

This is Kogyoku on Kurenai-no-yume.  I am going to replace this, later this year, with a crab apple scion that my neighbour is willing to give.  One of the parents of Kurenai-no-yume is Kogyoku and, to avoid DNA overlap, I pollinated it with the crab apple which seems to have worked well.

初挑戦のサツマイモ栽培。やっと芽が出てきました。これは「五郎島金時」。（紫芋のほうは、何も出てこないのでほじくってみたら、溶けてドロドロになっていました。）

写真の赤〇で囲まれている芽は、ちょっと可哀そうなことをしました。まだ寒い時期にホスタに似た雑草のようなものが顔を出したので、それをむしり続けていたのが今になって芋の芽だったことが分かりました。どうりで何度むしっても根っこが出てこなかったけど、ホスタ似の雑草もなかなか根っこが出てこないような記憶です。

Sweet potato shoots are coming out at last.  Since I have never grown sweet potatoes, I made a mistake.  While the climate was still very cold, I kept noticing shoots that I thought were weeds resembling hosta.  So I plucked them every time I noticed them.  It turns out that they were forerunners.  

オリーブ Olives

 2,3年前に買ったオリーブは、シプレッシーノ（左）とピクアル（右）です。

そのときネット上で見た記事によると、シプレッシーノはひょろりと伸び伸びの樹形になりやすい品種、ということでした。うちではあくまでも鉢植え管理の予定なので、なるべく枝を多く出してこぢんまりした樹形にしようと、去年の３月頃に徹底的に刈り込みました。

I bought small olive plants a few years ago: in the photo below, Cipressino (left) and Pcual (right).  Since then, I learned on the internet that Cipressino tended to grow into a lanky tree in the early years.  Since I can keep them only in pots, this was bad news.  So I trimmed Cipressino almost down to the ground in March last year.

それが良かったらしく、今では地面近くで枝が繁茂して花もどっさり着いています。調べたら、シプレッシーノはピクアル同様、自家結実性があるそうなので、今年の秋にはいくつか実を期待しています。これらの苗を実着きで買ったときは、直径15cmほどの鉢に２本一緒に植わっていた挿し木苗でした。自家結実性のあるもの同士を、こうやって並べて育てれば安心です。

Now it is compact and bushy with lots of flowers.  Originally, I was looking for Picual since I had heard that it was self-fertile.  Luckily, I found Picual and Cipressino cuttings growing in the same pot and with fruits already on them.  I have also learned that Cipressino is self-fertile, too.  So, I am not worried that only Cipressino has flowers this year.

ピクアルも、去年の秋までには伸び伸びの樹形になっていました。そこで年末に刈り込んだら、冬の間に僅かながらも新芽の動きがありました。オリーブは東京の冬なら楽勝のようです。ピクアルの現在の樹形は、シプレッシーノの去年の今頃の状態です。なので来年の今頃は、両方の品種に花がどっさり咲いていることを期待しています。

Picual also became lanky during last year and I cut it down to 25cm above the ground in December 2023.  There were new leaf bud movements through winter, which means that the climate in Tokyo is warm enough for olive trees.  The current state of this Picual is how Cipressino looked this time last year.  So, I am hoping to see both of them with lots of flowers in May next year.
