スモモ苗到着 New plum plants arriving

 注文してあったスモモ苗が届きました。左が今回本命のハニーハート、右が送料の関係でもう１本注文した李王。しっかりと箱に固定されて完璧な梱包です。これまで何度か利用したことのある「ガーデン〇トーリー」さんからの苗です。

この２本の太さや形状から明らかなように、ハニーハートは２年生の苗を切り詰めて発送したもののようです。右の李王は正真正銘の新苗。サイト上ではハニーハートも「１年生苗」という表示になっていたのですが、よほど在庫がなくなっていたのでしょう。私が注文した直後に売り切れ表示に切り替わっていました。

言うまでもなく、私としては２年生の苗が届くなんて、嬉しいサプライズです。毎年、江古田の八百屋さんでハニーハートを買って食べているほど気に入っている品種なので、１年でも早く収穫したいです。

Two new plants arrived this afternoon: both Japanese varieties, 'Honey Heart' on the left, and 'Riou' on the right.  I buy the fruits of Honey Heart from a local shop every summer, so I know the taste.  Riou is said to have a superior taste as well as having highly fragrant flesh.  They said on the shop site that both were 'new plants', meaning plants from 2021.  However, it is obvious that Honey Heart is a year older than Riou.  They must have been running down on stock because, after I placed my order on Honey Heart, it went 'out of stock' immediately.  As far as I am concerned I am thrilled to have an older plant since it means I can harvest that much sooner.

よーく見ると、最近まで花が咲いていたようです。もしかしたら、今年の夏の間にうまく育てると来年の開花が期待できるかも。

ビニールポットの土は出荷の際に根っこの周りに詰め込んだものなので、ポットから出したとたんにあっさりと取れました。根っこがかなり切られている。上手な人が育てると、むしろこれくらい根の無いほうが勢いよく育つのでしょうが、私にはちょっと試練の苗です。

They cut the roots without hesitation when they packed the plants.  For a seasoned gardener, this means that the plants will grow rapidly.  However, for an amateur like me, this is a bit worrying - still, I am up to the challenge.

とにかく、いつも愛用している用土と鹿沼土で植えつけ。

Anyhow, I have planted them in 30cm pots with the trusted soils from the local garden shop.  I am getting so excited, imagining how they grow new branches this summer. 😊💖

桜開花 Cherry blossoms starting to bloom

今週の始めから桜がチラホラ咲き始めています。昨日は雪が降るほどの寒い日でしたが、それを底にこれから暖かくなるようなので、２，３日後にはもっと咲き進むでしょう。

The cherry trees started to flower a few days ago but the cold weather has been holding them back - we even had snow in Tokyo yesterday.  However, the weather is turning around and cherry blossoms should be coming out in full force soon.

ピクニックランチをする人たちもまばらで、テーブルは余裕で空いています。

彩の姫も咲き始めました。ここに植わっていたアンズのサニーコットは過去５，６年、1個も生らず、そのかわり高接ぎしたスモモがよく生っていました。アンズは元々ドライフルーツにしたくて植えたものの、乾燥する前にカビが生えるので諦めました。生果としての利用はほんの少しあれば十分なので、今年の正月に彩の姫と交代させました。緑色のテープがある枝はアンズの高接ぎです。他に、去年の秋にマーキュリーに高接ぎした枝は活着が確認できているので、種の保存は確実。

Plum 'Saino-hime' also starting to flower - although with not so many flower buds.  In this spot, there used to be an apricot tree but I feel I have not much demand for apricots, so I grafted apricot twigs on Saino-hime and Mercury.

去年10号鉢で豊作だったエレファントハートは、味がとても気に入ったので地植えにしました（サマーエンジェルと交代）。去年の秋の時点ですでに根詰まりから、あと１年ももたないくらい衰弱して細枝には縦皺が入っていたので、越冬できるかさえ不安でした。今はすっかり元気回復で、蕾がゴツゴツに出ています。この品種は味が良いだけでなく、離核なのも気に入っています。今月末にはスモモ苗２本が届く予定ですが、うち１本はエレファントハートの早生版のような品種で、赤肉、離核のハニーハートです。

The variety from the US, 'Elephant Heart' with countless flower buds.  This plant produced a lot of delicious fruits last year.  However, the tree was too vigorous for growing in a pot and nearly died by winter.  So, I planted it in the garden and it has made a remarkable recovery.

私がエレファントハート苗に夢中になっていたら、玄関ドア前に座っていたタイガがそろーり近づいてきました。

As I was absorbed with Elephant Heart, Taiga came closer wanting attention.

名前を呼んだら、このマヌケ顔。眉毛のように見えるのはシワで、決して私が写真に手を加えたわけではありません。

When I called her name, she gave me this goofy face.  I assure you that I never interfered with the photo - no drawing of eyebrows.

今年はキンカンの色づきが遅かったです。最近やっと全面的に黄色になりました。これはニンポウ系の種の入る品種で大粒です。もう1本の去年が２年目のプチマルは４個しかならなかったので、まだ青いうちに食べてしまいましたが、何と甘かった。昔流通していたプチマル苗とは別品種かと思うほど優秀です。

同じく２階バルコニーに置いてある星タンゴールは、去年は裏年だったので１個しかなりませんでした。今年は生り年なので、もう蕾が大きくなっています。

スモモの花他 Plum blossoms etc

 スモモのマーキュリーが咲き始めました。とは言っても、今年は花数が少ないです。その原因は、たぶん、地植えのモロの樹勢が今までになく強くなって、マーキュリーに覆いかぶさるように日光を遮っていたから。モロの収穫がちょうど終わったので、枝を思い切って減らしました。これで来年用の花芽分化が夏におこるはずです。

Plum, Mercury, just starting to flower.  The plant fruited for the first time last year but the fruits were not so remarkable.  I hope they will improve with time.

先日から咲いているクリローの花はもうピークを過ぎましたが、遅れて咲いたこの花の色が濃いのでよく見たら、ヤフオクで落札したときの写真の色に近いものになっていました。

The Christmas rose is past its peak in flowering.  However, this late flower turned out to be just like the one in the photo when I bought it at an auction on the internet.  The colour of the actual plant that arrived was much paler and I was greatly disappointed, but now I know that it is possible to have red flowers with this plant.

これこそ、雲間草を連想して私が入札した花の色です。

こちらはお隣の庭のツバキ（写真掲載の了解は得ています）。毎年きれいな花を咲かせるので楽しみにしています。

The camellia tree in my next door neighbour's garden.  Due to the sloping geography in this area, the top of the tree comes up to my eye level and I have the full view of the flowers every spring.

スモモがコガネ成虫の害に会って毎日汚損果が出ているので、色づいたものから採ることにしました。これ↓はマーキュリー。

手前の緑色のはエレファントハート。10号の鉢植えにしては豊作です。果皮が青いせいか野鳥の害は受けていませんが、コガネの目はごまかせません。

中には右側の実のように陽光面が赤くなったものもあります。果肉がしっかりしていて、味はとても旨味があります。

Most of the Elephant Heart fruits were hidden from the sun by leaves, but those exposed to direct sunlight have gone partially red on the outside.  Nevertheless, the ones with green skin are also red on the inside and they are delicious fruits.

2年前に買った極早生ミカンの日南の姫が4個実を着けていましたが、今日の午後に１個が落ちていました。

Tangerine: 'Hinano-hime'.  This is the earliest ripening variety among Japanese tangerines, with the harvesting season starting in early September.  I bought the new plant 2 years ago and it produced 4 fruits this year (first year of fruiting).

これが落下した実ですが小さいので、単なる生理落果のようです。

One of them fell off the branch.  Tangerines do not fall off the tree even when ripe and, therefore, it was a simple case of shedding.

Not to waste, I tried the taste.  It was as sharp as a lemon, so I made a lemon squash drink with honey.

一応　味見してみたら、レモンも顔負けの激スッパでした。絞り汁を蜂蜜と一緒に水で溶かして飲んだらちょうど良かったです。皮が薄く種無しなのは嬉しい。

 台風の雨のおかげで、裏のネコがオナガから解放されたようです。カラスは翌年になっても恨みを覚えているそうですが、オナガは台風明けには戻っていません。なので、のんびり塀の上でくつろいでいます。

The cat I mentioned the other day, now relaxing on a fence.  It seems that she has been released finally from the harassment by the blue magpie.

カメラズームしながら声を掛けると目が合いました。ブサ可愛いです。もっと近くにいるときは、お互いゆっくり瞬きしてシンクロさせています。

Hopefully, she has learned a lesson and will never catch a magpie again.  The blue magpie is as clever as the crow and has a long memory.

プラム：エレファントハート Plum: Elephant Heart

 今日も雨。朝食後に２階寝室からベランダの鉢植えを見ていたら、エレファントハートが１個、根本に落ちているのに気づきました。今年が初収穫で、その１個めです。想像ではマーキュリーよりもエレファントハートのほうが先に熟し始めるはずだったので、待ちきれない思いでした。

Another rainy day due to the lingering effect of a typhoon.  When I checked the plum 'Elephant Heart' on the balcony next to my bedroom, I found one fruit fallen from the branch.  The very first fruit of a first-fruiting year - so exciting.

'Elephant Heart' was introduced from the US.  This is a variety with large fruits but to realise its potential, the plant should grow in the ground and not in a pot as it is now.

今朝落ちたのは小さい実で、他のはこのように↓大きなものが標準的です。

寝室へ上がってきたのは、タイガをトイレ散歩に誘うためでしたが、雨が嫌いなタイガは眠いふりをしています。

Meanwhile, Taiga is pretending to be sleepy since she does not like walking in the rain and refuses to come out of her bed.

つい先日までの猛暑のあいだは、エアコンをつけていてもフローリングの上で場所を替えながら、とにかく体を冷やそうとしていましたが、今は涼しいのでケージの毛布の上で平気なようです。

タイガのことは放っておいて、台所でエレファントハートを早速味見。追熟させないで食べて美味しければ、後で収穫するものは更に美味しいことが期待できます。

半割にすると期待どおり、スモモなのに離核！　しかも美味しい。

味は濃厚で、ソルダムに似ていますが、果肉のテクスチャーはソルダムのズルズルではなくもっちりした食感です。とにかく、旨い👍✨💥

I decided to taste it right away.  It may improve if I allow it to ripen off the tree, but if it tastes nice now, I can expect even nicer fruits later on as others become ready to be picked.

糖度計で計ってみると15.0度でしたが、食べた印象では旨味に感激してか、もっと甘く感じました。

最高に気に入ったので、今マーキュリーが地植えになっているスポットにこれを植えたいくらいです。ただし、今年の春先にサマーエンジェルにエレファントハートを４か所接いで全部活着、今は来年用の花芽分化もできているので悩むところです。

解決策として、マーキュリーをエレファントに接いで、エレファントを地植えにすれば、とも考えられますが、私の入門レベルの接ぎ木では、鉢植えの苗に高接ぎするのは成功率が非常に低いです。

The Brix sugar content was 15.0% but, perhaps due to its rich flavour, it tasted sweeter than that.  I am really excited with this variety.

 スモモのマーキュリーが熟し始めました。写真手前の２個が今朝、自然落果していたので、ついでに色づいていた３個も採ってみました。

落果していた２個は過熟気味でジューシーでしたが、特に美味しいとは思いませんでした。どうしても彩の姫と比較してしまいます。彩の姫は早生にもかかわらず風味が豊で、真に旨いスモモだと思っています。７月に、彩の姫を眺めていたとき通りがかった近所の年輩ご夫婦に数個差し上げたら、あまりに美味しくてびっくりしたそうで、私には縁のない高級な江戸時代から続く素麺とうどんをお礼にいただきました。来年の実も楽しみにしているそうです。そういえば、来年は結実３年目なので本格的に美味しくなるでしょう。

Due to the continuous rain over the last several days, the taste is very watery rather than juicy.

この前買った入門級のパッションフルーツが、今日の夕方に落ちていました。自然落果したのを拾って、果皮にシワができるまで待ってから食べるのだそうです。

The passion fruit plant is growing well in this warm rainy weather, and the fruit has fallen naturally.  I am looking forward to tasting this when the surface is covered with creases.

今朝のタイガ。やっとさえ雨の日に外に出るのが嫌いなのに、服を着せられるのは更に嫌なので逃げ回ります。昨日の夜、いったん雨が小降りになったときにさっとトイレ散歩しておいたので今朝はガマンが長続きして、朝の11時を過ぎても出たくなさそうでした。とにかく首だけ通したら、ボーゼンとして落ち込んだ顔。

Taiga does not like going out in the rain so I start prepping her emotionally by putting her clothes around her neck.  She looks resigned.

プラム「グリーンゲイジ」 Greengage plums

 数年前にグリーンゲイジとミラベルを導入したときは大いに期待していましたが、うちでは美味しい実がなりません。よって、今年を最後に完全撤退することにしました。

The last of Greengage plums - I am getting rid of this variety after this season.  Perhaps due to the difference in climate (Japan's climate being too hot and humid v.s. the climate in France), I have never had good fruits from this variety.
