サンシュユの花 Asiatic dogwood flowers

 いつもは横の道を通り過ぎるだけの公園に植わっている、サンシュユの花が咲き始めていました。（この公園は幼児専用なので、タイガの散歩ではその横にある、以前は畑だった草地を利用しています。）今朝は職員の方が偶然、塀のそばで作業をしていたので許可を得て中に入って写真を撮りました。

The flowers of the Asiatic dogwood trees in a park are starting to flower.  This park is dedicated to toddlers and, therefore, I normally walk by it without entering.  This morning, a park keeper was doing some work near the fence so I got permission to enter the park to take pictures.

まだ一分咲きにもなっていない状態ですが、春の到来を告げる花です。

The flowers have only started to open but it is a sign of spring having arrived.

うちの西洋サンシュユ「カザンラク」は、まだ棒苗とあまり変わらない姿です。去年の夏にヒョロヒョロと伸びたのを、秋に地上70cmくらいに切り詰めて越冬させました。今年は葉っぱ芽しかありません。何とか今年の夏の間に来年用の花芽を着けさせたいです。

The cornelian cherry tree that I bought in spring last year is a new variety developed in Bulgaria.  It produces large fruits suitable for fresh eating, too.  The plant grew upright during last summer and I cut it at about 70cm above the ground before winter.  It is not much to look at, but I am hoping that the plant will get flower buds for next year, during the forthcoming summer months.

Cornus mas Kazanlak

うちと同じ３丁目地区内にある保育所では河津桜が満開になっていました。明日からもう３月なので、これから色んな種類の桜があちこちの庭先や公園で見られそうです。

The early blooming variety of cherry tree is in full bloom in the grounds of a kindergarten in my neighbourhood.  I am looking forward to seeing many varieties of cherry blossoms over the next two months in people's gardens and parks.

大菊の挿し木 Cutting from chrysanthemum

去年の秋に開花苗で買った厚物菊がとても綺麗で、すっかり魅了されてしまいました。

The large chrysanthemum flower that I bought in autumn last year was so beautiful that I was totally enamoured by it.

最も根っこに近い部分の茎15cmほどを水挿しにしておきました。ブログ友の海月さんから教わったのですが、寒い時期の水挿しなら腐る心配がないそうです。待つことンか月、毎日茎の先端をつまんではビンから出して眺めていたので、指が触れていた部分がたぶん私の体温ですっかり壊死して黒くなってしまいました。

kept about 15cm of the stem, closest to the root, for propagation.  A blog friend of mine told me that cuttings rarely go rotten during cold months, and I wanted to try it.  During the many months of waiting, I picked up the cutting with my fingers and the tip of the cutting went necrotic, probably caused by the body temperature through my fingers.

最近になってやっと切断部分にカルスができ始めて喜んでいたら、突然、根っこが２，３日前に出てきました。カルスとは関係のない場所からです。

Only recently, I noticed that some calluses were forming around the bottom tip.  Then, I was elated to find a root suddenly coming out a few days later, way above where the calluses were.

昨日、２本目の短い根っこが切断部分から出てきましたが、やはりカルスとは関係のない箇所からです。カルスは発根の素、と思っていた私にはよく分かりませんが、嬉しい。

Moreover, I saw this second root yesterday, again, not directly out of the callus.  I had imagined that you needed a callus so that roots would shoot out.  Whatever the truth, I am just ecstatic.  

早速、植え付け。鉢底に鹿沼土を敷いて、あとは挿し芽の用土です。

Today being slightly warmer than yesterday, I decided to put the cutting in a pot.

黒く変色していた頂点から壊死が下へ広がる心配があったので、黒い部分は除去して、接ぎ木テープで包帯をしておきました。もしも「枯れ」がまた広がっても、

Just in case the necrosis at the top might spread downwards, I cut it off and wrapped the top with a piece of grafting tape.  Even if the necrosis starts again, 

上の写真の長い根っこの真上からこの新芽が出ているので、苗全体が枯れることはないでしょう。最悪、親株もあるので、初夏には挿し芽で増やせます。

I have this new growth, which has been growing just above the longer root in the photo above.  So, it is unlikely that the whole cutting might die.  In any case, I still have roots of the original plant from last autumn.

退屈しているタイガ。ネコのように、私がすることに鼻を突っ込んできます。座布団を出してきて座らせました。

Taiga being bored, she follows me everywhere like a cat.  So, I brought out her cushion for sitting.

 

去年の春に、スモモの「彩の姫」に高接ぎした「南高梅」が咲き始めました。向かいの公園には他品種の梅がまだ咲いていますが、今年は人口授粉しません。

I grafted a scion of Nanko Ume onto the Sai-no-Hime plum tree in spring last year.  It already has flowers this year but I am not going to pollinate them.

去年の春に買ったビルベリーの苗は、常緑で冬を越しました。ドイツで実生選抜された耐暑性のある苗、というのがセールス文句でした。

The bilberry plant I bought in spring last year has grown vigorously.  The sales pitch of this plant is that it is 'heat tolerant', developed in Germany from seedlings.  So far, it has weathered the hot and humid summer in Tokyo.

今年は花数が多くなりそうです。強風のなかでの写真だったのでボケてしまいましたが、蕾の詰まった芽がほぐれ始めています。去年は２，３粒しか採れませんでしたが、今年以降ある程度の収穫があれば、苗は元気に育っていることもあって、「耐暑性」のセールス文句に恥じない苗になるでしょう。

The buds containing several flower buds are starting to unravel (the wind was very strong today and the photo is blurred).  Last year, I had only a few fruits.  If I get a decent amount from this year onwards, I will be able to believe the description 'heat tolerant'.

クリスマスローズ他 Christmas Rose etc

 私の園芸は果樹が主なので、花木は本当に少ないですが、そのなかでクリスマスローズは年の最初に咲く花です。とは言っても、今では２株しか残っていません。写真の赤円で囲まれた株は、かつて私が熱を上げていた八重咲きゴールドネクタリーの実生苗です。10株以上買ったのに、どれも３，４か月ほどで枯れてしまいました。この実生は、そのうちの一株からのこぼれ種が発芽したもので、去年の初開花までに５、６年かかりました。親株とは異なり丈夫です。

手前の大きな苗は、ゴールドネクタリーと同時期に買った唯一の赤花苗です。今年は蕾の数が多くてびっくりです。

Since my interest in gardening is mainly in growing fruit trees, I do not have many flowers.  However, I am always looking forward to the two Christmas roses opening, since they announce the arrival of spring (I wonder why they call it 'Christmas' rose).  

The plant in the red circle is a seedling from one of the gold Christmas rose plants that I bought some years ago.  The original plants were very delicate, and all died out within 3-4 months after purchase.  Fortunately, this plant appeared out of the ground as a tiny seedling and kept growing.  It took 5-6 years before having the first flower last spring.  

黄色のほうは実生苗ながら、しっかり八重咲きになっています。また、草姿は上の写真で見られるように、まさにゴールドネクタリー苗の花茎が非常に短い特徴を受け継いでいます。

Like its parent, it is a double flower with clear gold colour.   Its stature is also reminiscent of its parent, with a very short flower stem - about 10 cm above the ground.

ただし、シベの付け根に有るべきネクタリーは見当たりません。なので単に「ゴールド苗」と思っています。

However, the parents had gold nectarines which were very visible, but this seedling does not.  So, this is just a gold flower Christmas rose.  The parents were called 'Christmas roses with gold nectarines' and this feature was a very big deal in those days.

去年は花が１個だけでしたが、今年は蕾がもう１個あります。

When this seedling flowered for the first time last year, it had only one flower.  This year, there is another one to look forward to.

こちらは赤花のほう。他のゴールドネクタリー苗を育苗していた同じ農園からの出身で、ラベルによると片親には芳香付きゴールドネクタリーが記載されていました。少しずつ株が大きくなっているので、これも丈夫そうです。

This red flower plant was bought at the same time when I was totally bewitched by so-called 'gold nectarine Christmas roses', and it comes from the same nursery as the gold ones.  Moreover, the label said that one of the parents was a gold flower plant with fragrance.

種無しキンカンのプチマルが徐々に色づいてきています。

The kumquat fruits are ripening slowly.  This is a seedless variety and it is much more pleasant to eat without seeds.

去年は実着き苗を買って３年目でしたが、枝数が増えてその分、実も増えました。

Last year was the 3rd year after getting this plant.  The branches are maturing and I am getting more fruits now.

相変わらず座りかたがだらしないタイガ。最近シャンプーをしてムダ毛をはぶいたので、わずかに引き締まって見えます。

Taiga had a shampoo a few days ago.  Having got rid of excess fur, she looks slightly slimmer.

新しい雨合羽 New Raincoat

 タイガの古いレインコートがきつくて使いにくいので、思いっきり大きなのを買いました。今度のサイズは6XL。首回り60cm、胸囲は70cmで、大型犬用に近いです。それでも、胸のボタンが、留めるそばから外れていました。ダイエットが必要です。

Taiga's old raincoats are all too tight, so I got quite a large one this time.  Its size is 6XL, with 60cm for around the neck, and 70cm for the chest.  It is almost for a large dog.  However, even with this, one of the two buttons on the chest kept getting undone.  She needs to go on a diet.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 朝の散歩の途中で、同じ3丁目に住む柴犬のせとかちゃんに会えました。この写真ではまるでせとかちゃんがタイガに敬意を払いながら近づいているように見えますが、せとかちゃんは実際には強気で怖いもの知らずの女の子です。スイッチが入ると典型的な柴犬のコーフン状態ではしゃぎまわります。

We met Setoka, a female Black Shiba Inu, on our way to the park.  In this picture, she looks as if she is being respectful to Taiga.  In fact, she is a very sassy girl and afraid of no-one.  When she gets excited, she runs about like mad in a typical Shiba Inu fashion.

「こどもの森公園」の横の草地。かつては個人所有の畑だったところが、今は一般に開放されています。犬を飼っている人たちの間でもその存在があまり知られていないのか、いつ行っても貸し切り状態です。

We went to a park that used to be a farm field owned by an old couple, which is now open to the public.  Probably not many dog owners know about this new park, for it is always deserted when we use it.

ひとりで退屈なのか、リードを咥えて暴れ始めました。

最後はブルブル。犬の皮膚はズルズルに動くので、まるでハニーバッジャーのように皮の中で体が回転しているように見えます。

To finish, she shook herself.  It always reminds me of the honey badger with its loose skin.

シンビジュームの現状 Cymbidiums

 今日は週に一度の潅水の日。バケツは１個で、各苗15分くらいずつ順に水に漬けこんで引き上げ、その後は水切りに結構時間がかかります。でも、綺麗な花を眺めながらなので苦になりません。

Today was the weekly watering day for the cymbidium plants.  Using only one bucket and soaking the plant in the water for 15 minutes one at a time, it is time consuming.  However, I enjoy doing it since the flowers are so pretty.

風で倒れないように、壁を背後にして、根元に石を乗せて重心を低くしてあります。

While draining, I placed the plants by the wall, with a stone at the roots so that the centre of gravity would be lower.  Otherwise, the plants might fall to the ground in the slightest breeze.

このピンク花の苗は、私にとって「シンビジューム」と聞くとまず先に頭の中に浮かぶタイプなので、ゲットできて本当に良かったと思っています。

This pink flower plant is the type I always associated with the name 'cymbidium', so I am very pleased to have got this.

この黄花の苗を世話していると、シンビジュームはとても丈夫な植物だとつくづく思います。

Taking care of this yellow flower plant, I now understand why people say that cymbidiums are tough and easy plants to look after.

蕾の茎を支柱に括り付ける作業でうっかり乱暴に引っ張ったりすることがありますが、蕾がもげたり茎が折れたりすることもなく今のところ無傷です。

I have been training the flower bud stems to grow upright.  In doing so, I have made blunders by pulling or pushing too hard from time to time.  Still, no breakage either of flower buds or the stem - the plant is very forgiving.

これは最後に買った「テーブル」シンビジューム。葉っぱは小ぶりでも花茎が長いので、普通サイズの２鉢の隣に置いても見劣りしません。苗を買った当時、蕾が３個先っちょにありましたが今は満開です。

Although this 'table' cymbidium is a compact plant, thanks to the long flower stems, it does not look less conspicuous standing next to the showy, normal-sized cymbidiums.  When I bought this plant, there were 3 flower buds at the top but they are now in full bloom.

ハデなような控えめなような、眺めていて飽きない花です。

The flowers look delicate and modest and, yet, quite eye-catching at the same time.

散歩 Walks

 城北公園の手前に住んでいるカンタに、朝散歩のついでに手作りササミジャーキーを持っていくことにしました。

I have been making more chicken sasami jerky, taking advantage of the extremely dry climate of Tokyo winter.  This morning, I decided to take some to Kanta, another Kaiken, living in a house near the park.

カンタ家の門を通ると、

As we passed through the gate,

私たちの接近を早くから察知して鼻を鳴らしていたカンタが出迎えてくれました。

Kanta came to meet us.  He had detected our approach quite in advance and had been making whining sounds, according to his mom.

ところが一変、自分ちの庭なのでタイガに対して威張り始めました。

Suddenly, he changed his attitude and started growling at Taiga, as if to say "this is my garden and you are standing in it".

タイガが耳を後ろに倒して低姿勢を示しているのに唸り続けていたので、私がたしなめておきました。

Taiga was taking a humble posture with her ears pushed back but Kanta kept growling.  So, I told him off, which quietened him momentarily.

こーんなに威張るヤツだったけ？と思うほど、いつまでもエラそうにしています。

Nevertheless, he went on with his attitude.

タイガが少し離れたところへ移動しても、威張り続けるカンタ。オヤツを渡したあとは公園へ向かいました。

Taiga moved away and kept her distance, but Kanta remained arrogant.  After handing the home-made jerky, I took Taiga to the park.

公園からの帰り道、マメシバのリンゴちゃんに会えました。生後5カ月。4ヵ月の頃はガリガリの子犬だったのに、急に大人びてきた感じです。キツネのようにシッポが長い。

On our way home, we met Ringo (means 'apple'), now 5 months old miniature Shiba Inu.  When she was 4 months old, she was a skinny puppy.  Now, she looks like a grown-up.  Also, she looks like a miniature fox with her long tail.

リンゴちゃんには普通サイズの柴犬の兄がいて、リンゴちゃんのどんな我儘でも許してしまうそうです。当然のことながら、月齢がほぼ同じマメシバのケビンと会ったときは、猛烈なガードでケビンの接近をけん制したそうです。

Ringo has an older 'brother', a normal sized Shiba Inu, who is devoted to her.  Not surprisingly, when they met Kevin, a miniature Black Shiba Inu, Ringo's brother was absolutely furious and tried to prevent him from coming anywhere near Ringo.

そのケビンには午後の散歩で会えました。ケビンママと私はほぼ同時期にノド風邪をひいていたので、お互いあまり人と会わないようにしていたのですが、治った今、久しぶりの再会で嬉しかったです。ケビンは体の線に丸みを帯びてきて、すっかり大人っぽくなっていました。早々と去勢手術をしたばかりだそうで、衛生面から服を着ているそうです。

It so happened that we met the said Kevin during our afternoon walk.  Kevin's mom and I had a sore throat at about the same time, and we have been avoiding meeting people.  Having recovered, it was so nice to see each other again.  Kevin now at 5 months old, looks round and grown up.  Only a few days ago, he was neutered and now wearing this blue outfit for hygiene reasons.

ケビンが私に甘えているスキに、ママがケビンの頭を撫でました。去勢手術を恨んでいるのか、病院から戻って以来、ママもご主人もケビンにガン無視されているのだそうです。話しかけても聞こえないふりしたり、視線を合わせないなど、お二人には結構キツイようです。そこで、ケビンの機嫌が良いうちに触っておこうということでした。

As Kevin was snuggling up to me, his mom quickly stroked his head, which seemed peculiar to me.  She explained that since coming home after the surgery, Kevin has been totally ignoring his parents.  When they speak to him, he pretends not to hear, and he never looks them in the eye.  This has been very upsetting to his parents.  So, his mom took the opportunity to stroke him while he was in a good mood.

でも手術とは無関係の私には、いつものように愛想が良いです。

Fortunately, since I had nothing to do with the decision to neuter him, Kevin was as affectionate as always.
