河津桜開花 Early flowering Sakura in bloom

 朝散歩に出ようとしたら、ちょうど家の前を紀州犬のウメちゃんが散歩帰りに通りかかりました。ウメちゃんちは目と鼻の先で、ちょうどその方角へタイガが行きたがっていたので家まで送りました。

As we were leaving for a morning walk, Ume, a female Kishu-ken, happened to pass by on her way home.  She lives only about 30 meters away so we walked her home.

地元スーパーのテニスコートの横にある更衣室のような建物（当初は何かの美術館かと思っていました）。その庭に桜が咲いているのが見えました。

When we were passing by the building belonging to a tennis club, I noticed a cherry tree in bloom.

駐車場はいつもオープンなので入ってみると、河津桜が満開でした。樹形を見て笑ってしまいました。まるで果樹の剪定です。

The parking area is always open so I went in.  It was the early flowering variety called Kouzu Sakura.  Looking at the tree, I laughed - the gardener pruned the branches as if it were a fruit tree.

その効果で花着きの状態は間隔なしにびっしり。

Thanks to the special pruning, the flowers are very dense.

梅やアンズでこの枝振りなら鈴なりが期待できそう。

If this were a plum tree, you could expect a huge harvest.

リンゴ苗 New apple plants

 先日届いたリンゴ苗ですが、今になってやっとUP。動画専用の新しいPCのスピードに慣れてしまうと、VAIOの動きが遅くてつい億劫になります。

These new apple plants were delivered some days ago but I am uploading the pictures only now, for the sake of record.

左がグラニースミス、右が紅の夢。いずれもワイ台接ぎなので、写真では見えないけどルートストックにマルバカイドウ、中間台に、左のはY台、右のはM9となっています。色で示してある部分が本体。グラニースミスの本体は長いので、植えつけ時に40cmほどに切り詰めました。去年買った紅の夢は、まだ生きてはいますが、夏の間にシンクイムシの被害に遭ってボロボロ。大反省で、今年からしっかり管理して行きます。

Granny Smith on the left, and Kurenai No Yume on the right.  The latter is a red-flesh variety.  Each of these is grafted onto a dwarf variety (a middle stock), which in turn is grafted onto a root stock (flowering crab apple).   The part indicated by either green or red is Granny Smith or Kurenai No Yume.  As you can see, Granny Smith was too long so I trimmed it to about 40cm when I planted it in the pot.

The roots were decent.

少しでも暖かくなると外に出たがるタイガのために座布団を敷いたのですが、苦情が来ました。タイガファンの方々曰く、「以前は名前を呼ぶと門のところまできてくれたのに、今では座布団の上から動こうとしない」のだそうです。

Taiga loves to sit in front of the porch door so that she could see the world go by.  She now has a cushion and I have had complaints from Taiga's fans.  According to them, Taiga used to come rushing to the gate when they called her name as they passed by but, now that she has the cushion, she does not bother to move.

この座布団の上で夕方散歩の時間まで過ごします。

She refuses to come inside and remains here until the time of evening walk.

うちにはもう一本、リンゴ苗があります。クラブアップルの「長寿紅」。今年の１月に売れ残りの値下げで1,000円になっていました。紅の夢の授粉樹に、と買ってしまいましたが、先日の雪の日に数個とって、一部はリンゴパイの動画に登場させました。

I have another apple plant - a Japanese crab apple.  I am hoping this might become a pollinator for other varieties.

長さ4センチ弱。

Just under 4 cm long.

糖度計によると、13.8度。食べてみると、普通にリンゴ味でした。

The sugar content was 13.8% - not bad at all.

ベークトチーズケーキのようなヨーグルトケーキ Yogurt cake that tastes like a baked cheesecake

 乳製品の値上がりが厳しいので、ソフトチーズのようなものを生クリームとヨーグルトで作ってケーキにしたら、まるでチーズケーキのような味になりました。タイガが大好きなヨーグルトは日常的に作っているので、生クリームでこのようなケーキができるなら少しは安上がりです。

I mixed 2 table spoons of yogurt into double cream and left it overnight, which turned into something like soft cheese, but much more solid than mascarpone.  Using this stuff, I baked a cake which turn out to be just like a baked cheese cake.

サケとホタテのテリーヌ Salmon and Scallop Terrine

 甘いものばかり作っていると健康への影響が心配なので、久しぶりにご飯系をアップロードしました。パッションフルーツソースは、去年のツルがまだバルコニーで頑張っているのですが、もう手じまいにするために全部収穫したなかからのものです。

I made individual terrine with salmon and baby scallops.  The passion fruit sauce was made with the fruit harvested for the last time from the plant that I grew last summer.  The plant has not died yet on the balcony, but I am clearing the scaffold to get ready for the new plant that I made from a cutting.

りんごパイ Apple Pie

 クロワッサン生地でアップルパイを作りました。あとで思ったのは、このデザインにするなら、パフペイストリーの生地でも良かったということ。イーストが入ると、この寒い時期、生地の動きとバターの硬直化のギャップが大きいので、無駄に難易度を上げた印象。

We are coming to the end of cooking apple season now, so I made apple pies while I could.  The variety I used was introduced to Japan from the US more than a hundred years ago and, in spite of all the dessert apples developed in Japan since then, this variety has survived. 

コーヒーパンとパッションフルーツクリーム Coffee Buns with Passion Fruit Cream

この寒さでも２階バルコニーのパッションフルーツの実が完熟へと成長しています。せっかくなのでコーヒーパンとの組み合わせに利用。 果実は、去年の夏に全て収穫したあと９月に咲いた花からのものなので、半年で２度目の収穫。

I made coffee buns with instant coffee and sandwiched the cream made with passion fruit juice.  The passion fruit plant is still alive on my balcony and fruits are becoming ripe.  This is the second harvest after the fruits of last summer.

オレンジケーキ Orange Cake

 庭のミネオラオレンジを使ってケーキにしました。スライスの皮の部分は、砂糖を一緒にレンジにかけると苦味を感じません。これはブラッドオレンジの皮とは大違い。栽培しているオレンジの特徴をそれぞれに生かして料理に利用するのも楽しいです。

I used the Minneola oranges to make this cake.  When you slice the oranges to about 2mm thickness and then microwave them with sugar, there is hardly any bitterness in the peel.  This is very different from that of blood oranges.

イチゴムースのミルフィーユ Millefeuille with Strawberry Mousse

パフペイストリー、デニッシュ、クロワッサンの生地は、バターの洪水がおこる夏には絶対扱えない代物ですが、 冬は室温でもバターが石のように固くなるので違う意味で難しいです。でも、地元スーパーが目玉商品として真っ赤に熟したイチゴを売っていたのを見て、ミルフィーユを連想してしまいました。フィリングはカスタードではなく、台所が極寒なのを逆手にとって、ムースを挟みました（夏には絶対ムリ）。

I saw beautiful strawberries in the shop and thought of making millefeuille with strawberry mousse, instead of sandwiching custard cream.

ライ麦粉とクルミのラウンドパン Round brad with Rye and Walnuts

 ライ麦粉とクルミを入れて香ばしいパンになりました。サンドイッチでご飯系にしても、また甘いクリームを乗せても美味しいです。

Very flavourful bread with rye flour and chopped walnuts.  It can be enjoyed as a savoury snack as well as with sweet spread.

ビルベリーソースのミニケーキ Mini Cakes with Bilberry Sauce

冷凍のビルベリーを使ってケーキのトッピングにしました。ビルベリーのアントシアニン含有量はブルーベリーの比ではないそうなので、行きつけのスーパーで見かけると買います（最近の物流の困難でいつも有るとは限らない）。 

I made mini cakes with bilberry sauce topping.  The sharp taste of bilberry is very nice and goes well with the sponge as well as the cream.

抹茶ロールケーキ Matcha Rolled Cake

 動画処理が得意というパソコンを購入して初めてのYouTube投稿に手こずりました。パソコンなのに文書作成や表計算ができないなんて、初めての世界です。なので日常生活はこれまでどおりVAIOで行きます。

チョコレート・ロールケーキ Chocolate Rolled Cake

 真冬にチョコレートクリームのフィリングでロールケーキを作ったのが大間違い。極寒の台所ではカチカチになって、温めたナイフで切ることにさえ苦労しました。そこで、一切れだけオーブンの発酵機能を使って温めて試食したら、ラム酒の味が分かって何とも美味しかった。

I made a rolled cake with chocolate cream in the middle, which turned out to be a big mistake in this freezing climate.  It solidified so hard that I could barely cut a slice.  However, I warmed a slice in the oven by using the fermentation function.  This slice tasted very decadent with the rum flavour coming out fully.

公園で At the park

 タイガは最近、朝散歩を短めに切り上げる傾向があります。つい２年前までは長い散歩を朝・夕に付き合わされていたのが懐かしいくらいです。

大小の用は足したので帰ろとしたら、近所の紀州犬のウメちゃんもちょうど帰ろうとしているところでした。久しぶりに会えてウメちゃんもタイガも嬉しそう。

Recently, Taiga's morning walk has been getting shorter.  As we were about to turn back, we met Ume, my neighbour's female Kishuken, who was also going home.  Ume and Taiga are good friends and they look happy after not seeing each other for weeks.

鼻スリスリの挨拶のあとは、

ウメちゃんの方が１歳年下なのに、タイガのオシリをクンクン。タイガの耳の様子から、僅かに緊張。この角度からタイガのウェストあたりを見るとくびれが出ていて、ダイエット効果が分かります。タイガに負担になり過ぎないよう、やんわりスピードで食生活を改善しています。来年春の狂犬病ワクチンのときまでに、どれだけ変身しているか楽しみです。

Ume started sniffing Taiga's back side, although she is one year younger than Taiga.   

Looking at Taiga from this angle, can you see that she has lost weight - particularly around her waist?  Following our last visit to the vet, when she weighed 25kg, I have been improving Taiga's eating habit and now she looks a lot healthier.  She even has curves around her waist now.

前回会ったときウメちゃんの尻尾に一部ハゲがありましたが、今は新たな毛が生え始めています。ワンコの尻尾には神経が集約されているそうなので、寒い冬に間に合って良かったです。

When we last met, a part of Ume's tail was missing its coat.  It is now slowly coming back, which is reassuring.

天気もワンコたちも、ゆったりとなごんだ雰囲気の朝散歩でした。

クリスマスのリースパン Wreath Bread for Christmas

卵たっぷりの生地でリースパンを作りました。小麦粉400gと卵のおかげで、オーブンギリギリの直径30cm+ のが焼き上がると、台所いっぱいに卵とバターの匂いが広がります。

I made wreath bread ahead of Christmas.  With 400g strong flour and 2 eggs, it turned out to be 30cm diameter - a size enough to look attractive as a display.  However, with no-one else to look at in my house, I gave it away.

公園で At the park

 今日は天候に恵まれた日曜日で、城北公園では家族でピクニックやケームをしている人たちが多くみられました。昨日の木枯らしが吹く冬日から一変、何とものどかで過ごしやすかったです。

A sunny and warm morning today, after the cold wind of yesterday.  Taking advantage of the mild weather, there were quite a lot of young families spreading picnic lunches and playing games on the grass.

昨日の強風のあと、公園入口の広場のハゼの木は、葉っぱが半分くらいしか残っていませんでした。

My favourite Japanese wax tree at the entrance of the park has lost half of its leaves after yesterday's wind.

いつもの林の中を通ると、イチョウの葉で地面が覆われています。

The ground of the woods was covered with ginkgo leaves.

林の中を進むと、初めて見る子が飼い主さんを引っ張って近寄ってきました。

As we walked on through the woods, a very friendly new face approached us.

物怖じしないもうすぐ１歳の女の子で、スパニエルとトイプードルのミックスと推定されているそうです。

A female aged nearly one, she is a spaniel-toy poodle mix.

１歳と9歳半、しかもタイガのほうが倍以上のサイズなのに、本当に怖いもの知らずです。

She seems fearless for a one year old, considering her size against Taiga's who is 9 1/2 years old.

上のほうの広場は閑散としていて、人もワンコの姿もなし。

We moved to the higher ground where there were hardly any people.

ここの大木のイチョウは、黄葉がまだピーク前なのでもう少し楽しめそうです。

帰りは陸上競技場の横を通って川沿いの道を行きました。これからどんどん寒さが厳しくなりそうな予報なので、たぶん今日が最後の温暖な日曜日だったかもしれません。

We walked on a little more since today was probably the last mild Sunday for this year.  It is forecast to turn into severe winter days starting tomorrow.  (I cannot believe it, but the weather forecast on my PC indicates the temperature to remain 3-4 degrees below 0℃ throughout tomorrow!)
