中国大実棗に食害 Jujube nibbled by insect?

数か月前に練馬の渋谷園芸本店で買った、中国大実棗がなかなか色づかないのでしばらく記事にしていませんでしたが、最近うっすらと茶色がさして来ました。非常に豊産性で、夏の間に摘果して最終的に10個だけ残しておきました。

I bought a jujube tree a few months ago, which had lost its name tag in the shop - I think it is Lang, judging by the leaves unique to that variety.  Although the fruit setting occurred much earlier than other varieties, it is taking a long time to ripen.  Only recently, the fruits began to turn brown.  This tree is prolific, so I kept picking the young fruits during summer, ultimately leaving 10 to ripen.

右端の実がこの枝で最も大きいもの。最大果でこの程度なので、皇帝棗に比べるとかなり見劣りします。

The fruit on the extreme right is the largest on this branch.  These largest fruits on either branch are way smaller than the fruits of the Emperor jujube.

This afternoon, I noticed that one of the fruits on the right branch had been nibbled at.

傷口は乾燥して縮み始めているので、昨日かその前の出来事だと思います。また、傷の状態から野鳥に突かれたのではなく、昆虫がジミに齧ったような浅い傷跡です。庭に置いてある日本棗の親苗はコガネに齧られて１個も無傷な実は残りませんでしたが、傷口が似ていました。（実際に何度かコガネを現行犯で捕まえたので、これに関しては間違いありませんでした。）

The rim of the scar is already drying up, so it probably happened yesterday or before.  Also, the bite is shallow, and it was likely made by an insect, not a wild bird.  The Japanese jujube tree I have in the garden suffered similar damage on its fruits with large scars, leaving not a single fruit intact on that tree (I actually caught scarab beetles on several occasions, so I know who the culprits were with that tree).

試しに、食害の影響が及んでいない裏側を味見したら、とても甘かったです。水分の少ない筆柿を食べているような風味でした。この写真では果肉が白っぽく写っていますが、実際には以前育てていた新疆棗のように緑色で、２,３日前に試食した日本棗のヒコバエの実が非常にジューシーだったこともあり、この実はモサモサっぽく感じられます。

I tried the taste by taking a small piece on the other side, away from the damaged part.  It was very sweet and reminded me of a persimmon variety called 'Fudegaki' which tends to lack juiciness.  In this photo, the flesh looks white, but it was actually green.  I much prefer jujubes with white flesh because they seem to be juicier than the varieties that stay green.  The two varieties from Xinjian that I used to grow were green and dry to the end.

I thought I would try an unspoiled fruit for proper tasting.  This one was closer to maturity than others.

普通は横にナイフを入れて半割にするのですが、あまりに小さい実なので、

Normally, I would cut the fruit in half sideway, but this one is too small for the purpose of taking photos.

縦に切り込みを入れました。一番右のかけらに糖度計を当ててみると24.6%

So, I cut it lengthwise.  On applying the brix meter to the piece on the right, it indicated 24.6%.

真ん中のは42.4%

The one in the middle showed 42.4%.

左の最も茶色くなっている部分に当てると47.6%と出ました。甘いことは甘いですが、個人的にはやはり、熟すと果肉が白になる品種が生食用に好みです。

By applying the gadget to the brownest spot of the piece on the left, I got 47.6% which is extremely high.  These pieces were actually sweet, but I still prefer varieties with white flesh for fresh eating.

夕方散歩で、タイガはまた石神井川を城北公園とは逆の練馬方面へ向けて歩きました。ただし、いつもは左側の遊歩道の岸を歩きますが、今日は右側の車道のほうです。

For our evening walk, Taiga again chose the direction opposite to the Johoku Park, along the Shakujii River.  Normally, we walk the pedestrian path on the left bank, but she chose the right bank with normal traffic.

いつものオヤツスポットで一休みしてから、丘の上の住宅街を歩いて帰宅しました。

We stopped at the spot where we normally have a break, then headed for the residential area on the hill.

朝散歩 Morning Walk

 今朝も清々しい天気で、石神井川沿いを城北公園とは逆の練馬方面に向けて歩いていると、最近知り合いになったココ君に会えました。ココ君はビーグルとパグのミックスだそうですが、朗らかなビーグルという印象を受けます。飼い主さんは今日も仕事があるので、時間が許す限り一緒に歩きました。

Another cool and pleasant morning today.  As we were walking along the Shakujii River in the opposite direction to the Johoku Park, we met our new friend since this summer.  He is a Beagle-Pug mix, named Coco.  On the whole, Coco is more like a happy Beagle with larger- than-life appetite for food.  His mom had to go to work today, so we walked together for as long as time permitted.

ココ君たちと別れたあとは、坂を上って丘の上の住宅街を散策。毎年 満開の花を楽しみにしているナイトジャスミン（夜香木）のある家の前に来ました。ナイトジャスミンは夜に開花して昼は閉じていますが、早朝散歩の時間にはまだ花が開いて香っています。この木は、今年の春にはドラスチックに刈り込まれていたのが復活したようです。

After parting with Coco, we went up the hill to walk in the residential area.  We came to a house where they had a night jasmine tree.  I look forward to seeing this tree in full bloom every summer.  The night jasmine opens its flowers during the night, and they close during the day.  In the early hours of the morning when we pass by, the flowers are still open and emit a beautiful scent.  However, this tree was cut down drastically in spring this year, so it has been recovering from that shock treatment.

でも去年の夏には一階屋根を超えていたのと比べると、今は小振りです。

The tree is now much smaller than it was last year, when it was taller than the garage rooftop.

今年の開花は大幅に遅れているようで、ほんの一部の蕾が咲き始めたばかり。早朝の時間帯なので、閉じる前の花から甘い香りが漂ってきました。イランイランと比べて控えめな香りです。

The flowering is much delayed this year, due probably to the downsizing in spring.  Nevertheless, the few flowers already open for this season have not closed yet in early morning.  I much prefer this scent to that of the ylang ylang flower.

料理用リンゴのブラムリーを最近買ったので、これに似た実が生るリンゴの木がある駐車場へ寄ってみました。ここは以前は民家があったところですが、取り壊されて今は駐車場として使われています。かつては家の裏手に育っていた植木に交じって、しかも日の高い夏でも隣家の日陰になるという悪条件にあります。

After getting the cooking apples Bramley, I remembered about the apple tree in the next district.  There used to be a house in this plot but now it is used as a car park.  Among these trees stands the apple tree and it remains in the shade of the next door.  

さらに、リンゴの木の手前の２本は常緑樹で、冬も風通しが悪そう。

Moreover, the trees in front of the apple tree are evergreens which reduces air movement.

にも拘わらず、リンゴの木は健康そうな葉っぱです。枝には過熟で茶色くなったリンゴがいくつか残っています。

Nevertheless, the leaves are looking extremely healthy.  Underneath the tree, there are many overripe apples that dropped.

まだ茶色になっていない実は１個しか見当たりません。それにしてもハダニとは無縁の清潔そうな葉っぱです。この木のリンゴはたぶん８月には熟すのだと思いますが、毎年その頃に見に来ようと思っていながら実際に８月になると、猛暑に負けて足が遠のいてしまいます。

There was only one fruit on the tree that had not turned brown yet.  The leaves are amazingly clean and healthy looking.  The fruits of this tree probably ripen in August.  I always mean to visit this tree in August but once we are in August, the heat wave is so bad that I do not make it.  

地面に落ちた実はサイダーのような酸っぱい臭いを放っていました。極早生で且つ１本で着果して実は赤く色づかず、しかも風通しが悪くてもハダニが着かない強健なリンゴは何という品種なのでしょう。

There was a sweet and sour scent coming from the fallen fruits.  I wonder what cultivar this tree is - extremely early ripening, self-fertile, the fruit ripens without turning red on the outside, moreover, it is spider mite free despite lack of air movement.

日中のほとんどは良い天気だったのに、４時頃には空模様がガラっと変わっていました。これからは秋の不安定な天気が続くのでしょうか。

The weather was good during most of the day, but it had changed by 4 p.m.  Autumn weather is known to be changeable in Japan.

リンゴパンなど Apple Rolls etc

 今日も涼しい空気の中の早朝散歩が楽しめました。城北中央公園にて、タイガが珍しく売店のある広場を目指したので、今朝のオヤツ休憩はその広場でとりました。

It was another chilly morning, and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning walk in the Johoku Central Park.  Taiga wanted to go to the square where there was a kiosk, so she had her treat there.

休憩のあと帰ろうとしたら、久しぶりにケアンテリアのチャンプと会えました。現在工事中の対岸が草地だった数年前まで、毎夕方 同じワンコの群れで遊んでいました。草地が無くなって以来、群れはバラバラになって会う機会はあまりなくなってしまいましたが、いつまでも仲良しです。

When we got up to head home, we met Champ, a male Cairn Terrier and an old friend.  When the field on the other side of the Shakujii River used to be a green field many years ago, we met every evening as a pack with dogs of all sizes and ages, and it was great fun every time.  That field is currently under construction to build an underground facility to cope with potential floods.  As a result, the pack was disbanded and we rarely see each other these days especially after Covid, but the pooches remember each other forever.

去年植えられた若いクヌギの苗に、今年初めて実が生っていました。

We came across the young Quercus acutissima tree that was planted last year.  It is bearing nuts this year for the first time.

栗のようなイガイガに囲まれたドングリ。帰宅して調べてみたら、アク抜きの手順を正しくふめば食べられるそうです。そのアク抜きの下処理には、トチノキの実のように数日かかるそうなので気の遠くなるような話です。

The nut is surrounded by thorns like the sweet chestnut.  After I got home, I looked it up and found that you can turn the nuts edible by getting rid of the harmful bitterness.  It sounds like the horse chestnut.  However, the process/treatment takes several days to render the nuts harmless, and that is why I have never heard of it.

Nearby, there was a next-like object that appeared this summer.

バイオネストというのだそうです。

'Bio-nest'?  It seems like a holistic set up to encourage a cycle of life starting from microorganism and insects.

公園出口の広場ではヒガンバナが咲き始めていました。ここは陽当たりが良いので早めの開花のようです。うちのヒガンバナは現在、蕾の茎が伸び出している最中です。

In the last field before exiting the park, there were red spider lilies already flowering.  They are known to come out just in time for the autumnal equinox.  My spider lilies have just started to peep out of the ground.

草刈りしてないので、あのブリリャントな花が雑草に埋もれて良く見えないのが残念。

The grass remains uncut, so the brilliant flowers are not fully visible, which is a pity.

昨日買ってきた料理用リンゴのブラムリーを使って、リンゴパンを作ることにしました。リンゴをスライスしてフライパンでソテーしたものです。ブラムリーは煮ると果肉が跡形もなく溶けてしまうので、茶色のザラメ砂糖でソテーしました。５個を一気に加工して、その半分をパンに使いました。リンゴスライスを並べたらクルミをばら撒きます。この後、粉末シナモンとナツメグを振りかけて香り付けしてから巻き込みます。

I decided to bake apple roll bread using some of the Bramley apples that I bought yesterday.  Since the flesh of Bramley dissolves completely if I cook it in water, I sauteed the slices in a frying pan with brown crystalised sugar.  After spreading the slices over the dough, I added some walnuts, before sprinkling cinnamon powder and nutmeg.

ロールを６個に切り分けて焼き型へ。中心のエントツは、サランラップの芯にアルミフォイルを巻いたもの。リング状のパンにしたいので。

I cut the rolled dough into 6 pieces and placed them in the mould.  I made the tube in the centre with the core of cling wrap roll and covered it with aluminum foil.  

最終発酵が終わり、オーブンへ。

After the final proofing, to the oven.

180℃で30分焼きました。

I baked it at 180℃ for 30 minutes.

牛乳で溶いた粉砂糖をかけて完成。

砂糖でソテーしたリンゴは既にカラメル風味があったのですが、そこへシナモンが加わって何とも良い風味です。クルミも入れることで、歯ごたえが楽しめます。

The sauteed apple slices had a caramel flavour, and adding cinnamon and nutmeg enhanced it.  By adding walnuts, there was crunchiness in the fluffy bread.

ローゼルなど Roselle etc

 今朝は数か月ぶりの涼しい朝でした。朝の最低気温は19℃、日中の最高気温は25℃だったようで、早朝散歩が快適でした。帰宅すると、ローゼルの花がこれまでになく賑やか。全部で13輪咲いていました。昨日の雨で更に草丈が伸びて、現在2.5メートルほどになっています。以前、近くの区民農園で見たローゼルは120cmほどの立派な株で、決して間延びした感じではなく支柱も無しに直立していました。。対して、この苗は数本の支柱と紐で囲ってやっと立っている状態です。水の吸い過ぎですね。

It was the first chilly morning in months.  The lowest temperature in the morning was 19℃, and the day's maximum temperature was 25℃.  After the pleasant morning walk, I checked the roselle plant.  It had 13 flowers open this morning.  As to the height of the plant, yesterday's rain further fuelled its growth, and it now stands at around 2.5 meters tall.  A few years ago, I saw a beautiful roselle plant in the vegetable plot nearby.   It was about 1.2 meters tall, standing upright without any props.  In contrast, my roselle is surrounded by several props and strings.  I think this plant gets too much water in my garden.

私が道路側からローゼルを眺めている間、タイガはブラッドオレンジの木の向こうから、じっとこちらを監視していました。

As I was observing the roselle plant from the road, Taiga was watching me intently from behind the blood orange tree.

要求吠えをしない犬に育てたので、いつも無言でじっと待ちます。せめて尿意で切羽詰まっているときくらいは散歩を要求して知らせて欲しいですが、黙って玄関タイルの上でうずくまって漏らしてしまいます。

When she was a puppy, I trained her not to become a needy dog.  As a result, she waits patiently, without making demands.  I wish that she would at least let me know when she needs to go out for toilet.  Instead of whining, she silently crouches on the porch tiles and wets herself - it is so sad, and it must be harmful to her dignity.  I try to encourage her to let me know, but if I did it too eagerly, she might think that this was a good way to draw my attention and get into the habit of wetting herself.

ブラッドオレンジはモロです。果皮が赤くなると、木のそばを通っただけで花のような香りがします。

The orange tree is Moro, a blood orange variety.  When the skin becomes red, it emits a beautiful flowery scent, and I can smell it when I walk past the tree.

今日は金曜日だし涼しかったので、冷蔵庫の補充に自転車であちこちのスーパーへ行きました。環七のオーケーストアではクッキングアップルのブラムリーが入荷していました。このリンゴが買える唯一のお店です。ブラムリーやグラニースミスを栽培している農家は限られているので、仕入れ自体限定的で今日はラッキーでした。

Since it was Friday, and a cool morning, I cycled to several supermarkets in order to replenish the fridge.  One of them at quite a distance had Bramley apples that had just come in.  This store is the only one that deals in cooking apples in my area.  In Japan, very few farmers grow cooking apples, since dessert apples are more popular and fetch higher prices.  So, I was very lucky to have visited the store today.

袋から出すと、何とも良い香り。その後も、台所に入るたびに爽やかな香水のような香りにうっとり。

When I took the fruits out of the bag, a beautiful scent hit my nose.  Indeed, every time I went into the kitchen, there was this fresh fragrance permeating.

一番大きい実は258グラムでした。

The largest fruit weighed 258 g.

午前中スーパーでの買い物に家を出たり入ったりしていたので、タイガは私の注意を引くために、ずっと玄関ドアの前を陣取っていました。帰宅してドアを開けると背中が見えて、それをまたいで中に入るのを繰り返していました。ときどき通行税（オヤツ）を払っておきました。

As I went out of the house for shopping several times in the morning, Taiga lay in front of the door so as to catch my attention by blocking the way.  Every time I came home and opened the door, I saw her back facing me.  I had to walk over her in order to go out and come back into the house several times during the morning.  I even had to pay the toll sometimes.
